Tang

[edit]

Hi User:BD2412, because of your edits to Tang surname article was wondering if you could contribute another origin of Maiorana surname that's sourced here [1], which says it's derived from the name of a 16th century French family. Because of your other edits, I feel you can phrase it perfect. Hope you can help thanks. ~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.132.224.187 (talk) 19:39, 29 October 2016 (UTC)

[edit]
A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Cult of Orcus is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cult of Orcus until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. Why "New York (state)" instead of just "New York"?

[edit]

Hello. May I ask why you must say that everything that has to do with the great state that is New York must redirect from "New York (state)"? I only click direct links. I do not like (nor approve of, as it can be vandalistic) all these redirects. I already noticed that you changed New York back to "New York (state)" on New York (disambiguation). You're supposed to link directly to each article listed on the disambiguation page.—Bde1982 (talk) 06:56, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

  • All of these edits are per consensus in discussion at Talk:New York#Proposed action to resolve incorrect incoming links. There are thousands of incorrect links pointing to "New York" which are intended to point to other targets like "New York City" or "New York (magazine)". Because there are a large number of people working on this project, fixing the links intended for the state reduces the pool of false positives, and makes it easier to find and fix the incorrect links. So far, we have fixed over 13,000 errors this way. bd2412 T 15:27, 9 October 2016 (UTC)
I'm intending to keep reverting your edits to PRR L5 where you replace a good link New York, with a re-direct New York (state). It may well be consensus, but its wrong. Your edits are also inconsistent. You replaced the link in PRR DD1 with New York City under the same premise. If you replace the links in either of these articles again with a redirect, then I shall make a report on WP:AN/I. Please give a little more thought to your edits. KirksKeyKard (talk) 09:09, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
@KirksKeyKard: Both of these links should be piped through New York (state), in order to prevent false positives from disrupting efforts to fix the thousands of remaining links that should be pointed to articles other than "New York". Please be aware that you are expected to conform your conduct to the consensus of the community, even where you disagree with that consensus. Cheers! bd2412 T 13:51, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
To judge from the talk page you have limited consensus, and I would caution you against trying to trying to use railroading tactics. Also, WP:NOTBROKEN is a guideline, and as an established editor you should be aware that a great many editors are opposed to redirects. KirksKeyKard (talk) 14:40, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
I would hope that you would agree that repairing thousands upon thousands of errors is a good reason to use redirects in the unique instance of this highly prominent and ambiguous topic. bd2412 T 14:50, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
I am in general agreement with what you are doing. As someone who has come late to the party, and is seeing changes that involve re-directs, it is rather difficult to see the consensus on a very large talk page. I'm not here to be disruptive, so I'll stay out of your way. But I'll share a thought with you. Just like on the admins noticeboard, where an issue is closed and a summary of events is posted, perhaps you may consider doing the same on the talk page of New York. It would help other editors (like myself) to see a summary of the discussion and the level of consensus gained. KirksKeyKard (talk) 15:00, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
That is an excellent idea. I'll tap an admin not involved in the discussion itself to put a summary and hat on it. bd2412 T 15:06, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

Interview invitation from a Wikipedia researcher in University of Minnesota

[edit]

Hello BD 2412,

I am Bowen Yu, a Ph.D. student from GroupLens Research at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Currently, we are undertaking a study about turnover (editors leaving and joining) in WikiProjects within Wikipedia. We are trying to understand the effects of member turnovers in the WikiProject group, in terms of the group performance and member interaction, with a purpose of learning how to build successful online communities in future. More details about our project can be found on this meta-wiki page.

I would like to invite you for an interview if you are interested in our study and willing to share your experience with us. The interview will be about 30 - 45 minutes via either Skype or Google Hangout. You will receive a $10 gift card as compensation afterwards.

Please reach me at bowen@cs.umn.edu if you are interested or have any questions.

Thank you, Bowen

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi BD2412.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

[edit]

Hello, BD2412. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Mdann52 (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

There has been no activity from this IP address in nearly five years. The assignment or nature of IP addresses can change over time, so after a while, these old IP talk pages must be allowed to sink into obscurity. bd2412 T 13:25, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for taking a look at this stub I created for one of the newest justices of the Arizona Supreme Court. I'm just curious as to why you chose to leave the "New Unreviewed Article" tag in place after your changes? The article is marked as a stub, and will hopefully grow over time, but I think it's sufficient to be considered "reviewed" (particularly after your helpful cleanup) and am curious if I'm missing something on that count. --NDSteve10 (talk) 16:12, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

Your revert in Administrative region

This page is a disambiguation. Two lines explanation and the listing of the two regions in Brazil. It is only a translated imported version of "região administrativa" with a bit expansions. Please revert your revert. --Plagiat (talk) 12:14, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

WP:DIFFCAPS applies to the two regions. WP:BRD compels discussion achieving consensus before converting a page with incoming links to a disambiguation page. Also, you should fix all incoming links before engaging in such a change. bd2412 T 12:21, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
It's not a proper disambiguation page anyway. It is a (stub) article describing a specific type of political subdivision of Brazil. Maybe the Portuguese Wikipedia has a different standard; I don't know, but it doesn't matter, since in this Wikipedia we use our standards. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 12:30, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

Deletion of redirects

[edit]

I see you deleted many redirects with the reason Non-matching redirect to a disambiguation page; terms should only redirect to a disambiguation page if they are minor variations of spelling or punctuation. The names of professional cycling teams changes every year and have all many incoming link which are now all red. From this year the name of the men's and women's teams have the same name, that might be the reason they were linked to a disamb page. I recreated Liv-Plantur, Skil Koga, Team Skil-Argos and Skil 1t4i. Can you please do any others (if there are any others)? Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 09:40, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for assist at Wheeling Convention

[edit]

Thanks for the assist at Wheeling Convention. Your contribution is better than that of a previous editor who simply removed the brackets on names to disambiguation pages for the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829-1830 and the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1850.

I've begun working through the 1830 Convention chart, creating new bio articles for Samuel Taylor (Virginian) to disambiguate, and for Philip N. Nicholas to remove a red link in the chart.

Other daughter articles of Virginia Conventions (nominated as a Good Article), with charts holding links to disambiguation pages, are:

Fifth Virginia Convention
Virginia Ratifying Convention
Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829–1830
Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1850
Virginia Secession Convention of 1861
Wheeling Convention
Virginia Loyalist Convention of 1864
Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1868
Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1902

Sorry, I have not yet figured out how to make them into a topic, "Virginia Constitutional Conventions", but I am searching. TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 13:49, 22 December 2016 (UTC) )
