May need to revoke TPA

A user you blocked (The Unusual Henytan) has continued to post promotional content on their talk page, so it may be necessary to revoke talk page access. It seems to be a clear promotion-only account. TornadoLGS (talk) 19:14, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Deleted page under G11

Hey there, fairly new to wiki editing so was likely correctly moderated (apologies) but having read through the CSD had enough trepidation/uncertainty to raise the issue. Please find the Redlink to aformentioned page attached.

This page related to the Reality Engine, the video game engine powering Roblox - 58.8 million daily active users as of Q3 2022 so certainly meets notability requirement; on notability I'd also point to Unity and Unreal Engine which both hold pages on this site. Would really appreciate some extended feedback, does a page require extensive contents to be approved, was it correctly moderated under the wrong rule etc.

Thank you, JedDevs (talk) 00:35, 5 January 2023 (UTC)JedDevs

That is an old page indeed! I am not saying the subject does not meet the requirements. The writing was totally devoid of sourcing, and was written like an ad for it, and for the game. It was deleted based on that writing. I do not know if the Reality Engine already has an article (could not find one with that name). Certainly Roblox is notable and already has an article, which does not mention this engine at all. If you have sufficient reliable sources to assert notability, then you can write an article for it. If are unfamiliar with article writing, you should read Your First Article. If you have questions about how Wikipedia works, please ask at the Teahouse. -- Alexf(talk) 01:06, 5 January 2023 (UTC)

Help with checking a translation

Hello Alexf, I am looking for a native Spanish speaker to help check a translation and your name was very early on in the WP:BABEL Spanish group. Warning, the topic I am asking you to check is on sexual assault and rape and is graphic. If you are not comfortable with this topic, please reject me. If you are willing and able to help, can you check if the text I have added here matches this source here? Thank you. starship.paint (exalt) 03:19, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

Not really comfortable with these types of subjects, but took a quick look. The translation is ok, but my issue with the piece is that there are no recordings or corroborations, and it is her word of what transpired. Not sure if it is reliable enough to post, giving it is a BLP. Sure, the judge seems to have seen enough evidence to arrest him. This is a subject outside of what I do, so not sure how much detail has to be included in an article. -- Alexf(talk) 12:19, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your help, Alexf. Personally given WP:PUBLICFIGURE, I think allegations can be written about given coverage. I just discovered additional coverage in El Pais. [1] As for the case itself, it seems that the alleged victim immediately told friends/doorman, physical evidence (injuries/dress) have been submitted, there is a recording showing the two having gone inside the bathroom for about 15 minutes, and Alves apparently changed his story multiple times about the event, that’s that. Again, I thank you for your help despite your discomfort, and I apologise for having caused that. starship.paint (exalt) 15:09, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

AganaNsiire

Hi,

In 2018, you indefinitely blocked AganaNsiire (talk · contribs). You said that it's for "spam". I guess it's because of this edit, which you reverted. It's not spam, but a legitimate news website, to which there are links from many Wikipedia article. The target of that link is here now; I wouldn't add it to the article myself, because it's just an opinion article on a news website, and there are more valuable sources about that topic, but it's definitely not outright spam.

If you thought that it's spam because the article is written by the same user, then as far as I know, it's not against policy by itself, and not a reason to block indefinitely without warning.

Would you agree to unblock that account? I have reasons that he can make positive contributions to Wikipedia, and I can vouch for him.

Thanks! Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 15:41, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

@Amire80: I researched further as I don' t remember that far back. It was for another edit, stopped by a filter where they spammed their own website. Check it out, and comment please. I am opposed at this time, unless further info from the user is forthcoming. -- Alexf(talk) 16:31, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
Can you please tell me how? I don't see it in Special:Log/abusefilter, but maybe I'm searching something incorrectly. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 16:35, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
@Amire80: On the link on this section, click on it to see their contributions. You will see " User contributions for AganaNsiire" . On the right there should be a link for "filter log". -- Alexf(talk) 16:39, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
OK, I see. I guess it's because the domain was the same as the username. That indeed shouldn't have been added as an external link, but I still have all reasons to believe that it's a good-faith editor that made a beginner's mistake, and for these two things he shouldn't have been indefinitely blocked. Again, I believe that even though he made these mistakes, and generally made few edits in Wikimedia wikis, he can make valuable contributions in English and other languages, and I can vouch for him. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 16:56, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
His main edit was to come in, and spam his website. He never came back to ask for guidance, explain, complain, nothing, even though clear instructions were left. If you want to engage him, or even unblock, go ahead but I am not for it. I believe editors should not spam their website, and if unclear, they should ask. The user talk page has been left open for years and yet, no complaints. Your call. I am not getting involved any more that I was at the time. -- Alexf(talk) 17:04, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. I will unblock and take responsibility for this.
I will nevertheless note that saying that his "main edit" was spam and reducing all his activity just to that is quite wrong. He created an article (without sources, but it was later improved) and made useful edits on Incubator and Meta. These aren't things that should be ignored. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:43, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I've noticed that you hid a revision on that page per RD2. It happens that the revision prior to it and the one after it (yes, my revision) also includes RD2-able content, as it seems like a different IP vandalized back in September - and it was not corrected until a third IP removed it. Hi Alexf, I just stumbled upon [2] via AIV and wondered about the criterion used. I apply RD3 pretty liberally, but it seems to exclude spam links, so I somehow felt that exclusion might apply to the other RDs as well. Is there a past discussion or guidance about this somewhere? ~ ToBeFree (talk) 22:34, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

@ToBeFree: Many people come here to spam their business, blog, or news platform. I do not like enabling spammers and making this a platform for them. They should understand that spam is not acceptable. Making a reference to a legit site that is newsworthy is not spam. Pointing to their blog, or company site to drive business and traffic to them, should not be accepted. -- Alexf(talk) 23:57, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

User Talk IPs

I know you just left them a note instead of blocking them, and I assumed that was that for my AIV report so I removed it, but are you sure they're not the same person? (maybe I'm assuming you saw my report, and you didn't actually see it).

Summary:
I reported 203.180.194.249 for likely block evasion of 203.180.194.247 (who is currently blocked). The reason for that, other than that they are in the same /28 IP range, is that both of these IPs do this user talk page stuff, both include the same words somewhere and do number counting things (and frankly a lot of other similar behaviour). The .247 has also edited both the .249's talk page (diff:1153894914) and the talk page of the other IP I mentioned 39.110.203.250 (their first 3 edits).

1 to 2 hours ago the active IP doing this talk page stuff was 203.180.194.248.

For ease of investigation:

2804:F14:80B6:3101:94AC:3D6C:795E:EF8A (talk) 01:45, 6 June 2023 (UTC)

Well at any rate, the .249 has since also edited over your note with the same behaviour, completely ignoring it, regardless of if these IPs are all the same person and evading the .247's block or not.
2804:F14:80B6:3101:94AC:3D6C:795E:EF8A (talk) 06:20, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
Actually, I've noticed <this>, which seemingly includes the name of a real school that matches the 203 IPs. I don't know if this is, as some of the pages imply, something that a school is doing. Things like <this> with that summary could possibly indicate that though.
At any rate, I've removed the 2 words I said was a pattern, as I suspect that might be a name.
2804:F14:80B6:3101:94AC:3D6C:795E:EF8A (talk) 09:54, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. I was out for three days so I did not get to see messages. -- Alexf(talk) 09:44, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
Looks like they made an account Yusaya 4532. Was(is) reported at AIV because it was submitting drafts. Same general talk-page behaviour as the IPs. – 2804:F14:80B3:CB01:7580:2AB6:654D:D95B (talk) 14:38, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
As the AIV reporter mentioned, this user also has an IPv6 (here's the </64>) - seemingly wasn't very active recently, except it was VERY active about a year ago, got a few blocks. Their behaviour has changed quite a bit, in that they were doing random stuff everywhere, not just their talk page, but still <some similarities> like that name, this time as the summary.
I think it now seems safe to conclude that this is one person, not an entire school. – 2804:F14:80B3:CB01:7580:2AB6:654D:D95B (talk) 15:08, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
Just an update, not that it made sense for me to keep bringing this to you, but for closure: This person is now globally locked, centred on Yusaya 4522, because at some point after making those initial accounts they made even more and did this in multiple wikis (or perhaps they already did this before in multiple wikis as IPs).
Quite the escalation. – 2804:F14:80B3:CB01:BC7E:3A4B:5EFD:7ED5 (talk) 12:19, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

Junicode edit

Hi Alexf,

I do not understand the message you left me to the effect that you have removed an inappropriate link. First of all, you don't seem to have removed it.

If you do remove it, what will be the result? Will you restore the statement that the latest version of this font is 1.002, which has been inaccurate for nearly two years? The note on that statement linked to a place where one could download an obsolete version. Do you mean to restore that link?

It has been a frustration to me for (as I said) nearly two years that the Wikipedia entry for my font linked to an obsolete version. I was uncomfortable about correcting it myself, but I thought it less ethical to get someone to do it for me, or to do it anonymously, so after thinking about it for a long time I did it propria persona. When the message about conflicts of interest popped up, I read it. There was a great deal of talk there about trying to use Wikipedia to make a profit, which would obviously be unethical, but since Junicode is an Open Source project from which I have never made any money (well, someone many years ago left a $25 donation on the SourceForge site, but you know what I mean), and never expect to make any, I decided it was all right to update the entry.

I apologize if I was mistaken. But I would ask: what are you going to do? Restore the inaccurate information? Delete the whole entry (though Junicode is considered an important Open Source project)? Or simply remove the link so that your readers will be unable to find the resource the article is about?

I'll be interested to see what you decide.

Best wishes, Peter Psb1558 (talk) 23:09, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

@Psb1558: Peter. I understand your concern. First, the post has not been removed. The canned message said so in error, (used the wrong message). I cleared that. The point here is that you, with all good intentions of fixing an old entry, are posting to your own data, which is a sign of spamming your own work, and not viewed as acceptable in Wikipedia. -- Alexf(talk) 00:03, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
I wasn't looking at it from that point of view, but I get it, and I will comply with your policy. Psb1558 (talk) 00:20, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

Assistance Request

Hello, I've been addressing fostered content issues on Wikipedia over the past month and there are now four remaining in usertalk space. One of these is on your User talk:Alexf/Archive 4. If you would be willing, would you replace the entire contents of the "Doczilla's RFA" section with the following code block to correct the syntax issues (one fostered content error, a table tag issue, two obsolete tags, three missing end tags, and three stripped tags)? While I'd normally make a smaller change X to Y in this sort of situation, this particular section had layered issues and it is just easier to fix the whole thing in one go.

The Godzilla reverse image? Yeah, that was removed from Wikipedia in 2011 for a possibly unfree file issue. Since red links/removed files aren't a WP:LINT issue and don't need to be fixed, I'm leaving that as it was.
I didn't mean for "Change to" to be included within the change, but it isn't causing any issues.
Thank you for your assistance! Zinnober9 (talk) 19:16, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

Question

Hi, I've noticed on a few accounts where I've reverted spam and you've rev/del'ed some of them. Is this something I should be asking for when I revert? Or do you have a magic wand that conjures them up in a back room somewhere waiting to be banished into the ether? Just because I'm nosey. Thanks, Knitsey (talk) 11:05, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

If it is blatant spam maybe you could ask, but we generally see them. A lot of people mistakenly try to spam their websites/blogs to increase traffic, or worse, they point to questionable sites. -- Alexf(talk) 11:10, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. I've noticed most, but not all trip the edit filter. I've also managed to find a few adding 404 links which I presume some will pop up at some point as a spam link. Knitsey (talk) 11:14, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

Erroneous block

I believe you may have blocked Thambidhuraitd (talk) in error. The reason cited is username policy. "Thambidhurai" appears to be an actual Indian last name, you may have misread last three letters as "Ltd" and mistook it for a company name.

I have no connection to this user; only watching them due to two attempts at unsourced DoB change on a BLP − I reverted the first one. I also haven't seen any edits of a promotional nature from them, unless there's something that's been deleted and not visible to me.

Cheers, 2406:3003:2077:1E60:CEFF:5CDD:BBC4:2876 (talk) 04:39, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

You are correct. That is what happened. Thanks.  Fixed -- Alexf(talk) 10:04, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

Query

Hello, Alexf,

I noticed you blocked Nið ricsað and deleted several of their articles as hoaxes. To be honest, I wasn't sure, I don't know much about this subject area. Should their other article creations be deleted and their edits rolled back? Just wondering. Thanks, have a good week. Liz Read! Talk! 15:53, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi Liz. I looked into them and agreed with the poster, so I deleted. Should other contributions be reverted? I looked at some, and did not think so, so I did not remove/reverted them. Maybe someone else with more knowledge can comment. That is what I saw and understood. -- Alexf(talk) 16:43, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
Okay, thank you for the assessment. I found a few of their edits were referring to the articles, now deleted, to legitimize them by writing them into the history of a location so I have reverted them. I'll look at a few more. Liz Read! Talk! 19:08, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Previously blocked editor still not complying with site policies

In May, you blocked User:Lakearea270 after I reported them at WP:COIN for editing Lake Area Technical College. You unblocked them after they changed their name. They haven't edited again until today when they resumed editing the same article. They have already explicitly admitted that they have a paid editing relationship with the college but they haven't complied with any of the relevant policies and practices except the name change that was imposed by your block. I think they may need to be blocked again until they comply with WP:PAID. ElKevbo (talk) 23:49, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. User warned and watchlisted. -- Alexf(talk) 00:07, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

User:Univocracy

Hi!, I don't the block you just levied on the aforementioned user should be a soft block. Edit filters disallowed several very vulgar comments on my talk page after I U5'd their user page. Thanks Seawolf35 (talk) 00:33, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

Had missed that. Changed the block. Unacceptable behavior. -- Alexf(talk) 00:54, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

Spam version-suppression

Hi, could you please justify your suppression from public view of a revision to List of breweries in California, Special:Diff/1175548828? On the one hand, I can see the justification for calling it spam and reverting the edit. But the sort of revision deletion that you performed goes well beyond that and typically only happens for copyvio or severe BLP violations. See WP:CRD for a list of valid revision deletion reasons. Which one of those do you think your spam-hiding revdel falls under? —David Eppstein (talk) 21:54, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

Yes you have a point within the strict interpretation of the rules, but blatant spamming should not be allowed and their websites should not be open here for people to click, give them traffic or worse, get malicious code. -- Alexf(talk) 22:10, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
That's what undo is for. It is not what revdel is for. —David Eppstein (talk) 22:22, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

Softblock

Hi, Alexf. Was it your intention to merely softblock User:Paloma Sanchez The Art of Jewlery, with the Twinkle notification that tells them "Your username is the principal reason for the block" and explains how to immediately create a new account? They had posted an egregiously promotional userpage, as you know (you deleted it). I normally hardblock such accounts. (In this case it would be really easy for them to create a new account, too - all they'd have to do is correct the misspelling "Jewlery"!) Bishonen | tålk 08:13, 13 October 2023 (UTC).

@Bishonen: Actually I debated on this one and maybe a soft heart won, so I did it like that on purpose. You do have a point. Changed. -- Alexf(talk) 10:56, 13 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, Alex. I thought all the classic phrasing ("beacon of innovation and creativity", "innate passion", "unparalleled craftsmanship", "wellspring of inspiration", "exquisite", etc etc) was itchingly painful. AI, maybe? Bishonen | tålk 11:17, 13 October 2023 (UTC).

Unblock request

You have blocked the IP address 71.222.21.17 for "Repeatedly triggering the Edit filter". There is now an unblock request from this IP address at UTRS. I have checked the history, and it is clear that the editor was repeatedly trying to remove material which unambiguously contradicts what the cited source says. Also, as the IP editor correctly pointed out, the citation for the removed material says that the reference refers to Daviess County, Ohio whereas the article is about Daviess County, Indiana. In fact, the page linked by the reference does refer to Daviess County, Indiana, and "Ohio" was evidently either a mistake or vandalism. In any case, I see no reason to think that the IP editor was acting in good faith, and moreover as I have said the information does not agree with the cited source, so I can only see the block as a mistake. I am therefore very much inclined to accept the unblock request, but I am holding back in case you know of some relevant fact which I have missed, and which significantly changes the situation. I will be grateful if you will let me know. JBW (talk) 20:29, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

@JBW: Ok. I see your point. It is a short-lived block but go ahead if you must. -- Alexf(talk) 20:44, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, it is a short block, and for that reason I don't see it as mattering much either way, but I think there's a case for unblocking as a gesture to an editor who was acting in good faith, albeit making a mistake in one respect. Thanks for answering. JBW (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Alexf,

Just wanted to let you know I neglected to remove the link from the article when I was drive-by tagging, but that's been fixed now. However, there are also many other links to other companies which have also been removed. I noticed you struck the edit that added the link the first time, so you may want to strike my edit afterward as well. However, the cat might be out of the bag for all the other links. I'm not too sure what the rules and procedures are on your end.
