Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Governors of Kasaï Province
A tag has been placed on Category:Governors of Kasaï Province requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Question
Well done sir, I will be very glad if you answer my question. When will an article be visible for public after being published? Sadeeqzaria (talk) 01:47, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
- An article is visible to the public as soon as it is saved. It is a good idea to use the "Show Preview" button to see what it will look like first. You can also start an article as a draft, e.g. Draft:Articlename, which will still be visible to the public but will not show up in search engines, then move it to Articlename when you feel it is ready. Prost
Hi, can you do me a favour and find Prost, a town which was called that in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now in the Czech Republic. I can't find it, it's a current smaller town in the Czech Repuiblic which used to be called Prost but can't find it, Steve Kaufmann's parents are from there.† Encyclopædius 09:17, 28 August 2020 (UTC)
- I give up. He may speak a lot of languages but he can't spell. His wife was born in Macow, which is why she speaks Cantonese. Prost is somewhere in Moravia. Prostějov (Prossnitz, Prostitz) maybe. Cheers! Aymatth2 (talk) 13:02, 28 August 2020 (UTC)
Thats it Prostějov, Prost would be the short hand name for that. What do you mean he can't spell?† Encyclopædius 17:54,
- Somewhere I saw something he wrote that said his wife was born in Macow (aka Macau). But I can't find it now. Aymatth2 (talk) 18:08, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
I wonder if the Chinese/Hong Kong British did spell it that way once in transliteration, some of those Chinese cities in my 80s encyclopedia had ow in the spelling which I thought funny. I'm not convinced he is properly fluent in 10 languages let alone 20. Obviously he's very knowledgeable and spent 55 years learning. Even Alexander Arguelles who knows 52 languages only speaks 10 truly fluently. There's a big difference between being able to largely read and understand text and being able to write and speak to a native level of proficiency. That Steve doesn't write is a give away.† Encyclopædius 18:45, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- I don't think spelling has much to do with linguistic ability. I imagine that in the past there have been totally illiterate Levantine traders who could effortlessly discuss complex subjects in flawless French, Italian, Greek, Turkish, Arabic and Persian. Aymatth2 (talk) 19:24, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
No, but he was a diplomat, so no doubt would have had to do written work. He lived in Hong Kong for a while so I think the spelling is deliberate.† Encyclopædius 11:34, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
[1] [2] I'd guess that was a legit spelling in English in his time.† Encyclopædius 11:38, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

I've just come across this article and wondered if I could urge you to be careful not simply to translate directly from non-free French texts in your future editing. I note there are a few parts of the article it comes dangerously close to the same phrasing as in the Biographie belge d'outre-mer, for example:
Les liens noués pendant le conflit avec Firmin van Bree amenèrent celui-ci, en 1945, à le faire entrer à la Forminière pour le charger de la haute direction des ventes de diamants de cette société. Pendant dix-sept ans, il sera l'organisateur de ce secteur d'importance mondiale et négociateur tant en Grande-Bretagne qu'en Afrique du Sud et aux Etats-Unis. |
Due to the links he forged during the war with Firmin van Bree, in 1945 he was put in charge of diamond sales of Forminière. He organized and represented this sector for 17 years in Great Britain, South Africa and the United States. |
I don't think this is WP:COPYVIO territory, but it would be best to be careful anyway. —Brigade Piron (talk) 18:28, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Brigade Piron: Thanks. It can be difficult to avoid similarity when the non-English source is very flat and factual. The English article obviously uses completely different words and does not carry across any creative expressions, but the same facts are given in the same natural sequence. If you can see a way to improve the wording to reduce similarity, by all means make the change. Aymatth2 (talk) 12:15, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

I saw your note about line breaks on your talk p. This summer, I had surgery for my right shoulder and for about 2 months had to use the non dominant hand for the mouse.
. I discovered Voice control for the Mac. The dictation part is too inaccurate, at least with my voice. But t some of the commands are very useful, such as select sentence. Also works on ipad. Seems to work best on Safari. Seems useful enough that I left it on, though I disabled the dictation part. There's probably something similar for the IBM. DGG ( talk ) 17:15, 21 November 2020 (UTC)

Haggis pakora and beef
Hi Aymatth2,
I thought you should know that I have tagged a sentence in haggis pakora as having failed verification. It is something that has been in the article since you created it in 2015, but it isn't mentioned in the source given and seems unlikely to be true.

Hello. Rather than create new categories for the DR Congo early years and manually transfer articles, please request that the existing categories be renamed – see WP:CfD on how to do so. They can be speedily moved under criteria WP:C2D. Cheers, Number 57
- @Number 57: Thanks. I thought of that, but think the redirects are useful, and anyway don't want to wait around for renames. There are not many articles involved and not many categories for the 1960–1964 period. Hello, Aymatth2
Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Robert McClenon, and I thank you for your contributions.
I wanted to let you know, however, that I've proposed an article that you started, Earthwatch Europe, for deletion because it meets one or more of our deletion criteria, and I don't think that it is suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia. The particular issue can be found in the notice that is now visible at the top of the article.
If you wish to contest the deletion:
- Edit the page
- Remove the text that looks like this:
{{proposed deletion/dated...}}
- Click the button.
If you object to the article's deletion, please remember to explain why you think the article should be kept on the article's talk page and improve the page to address the issues raised in the deletion notice. Otherwise, it may be deleted later by other means.
If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Robert McClenon}}
. And remember to sign your reply with ~~~~
. Thanks!

As part of the Wikipedia:WikiProject California/GNIS cleanup task force thing I have been looking through the resorts of Lake County and triaging "unincorporated communities" that were actually fairly well documented resorts during California's resort boom at the start of the 20th century. Compared to our dismal article, just from that book alone there is a lot more to be said about Hoberg's. More than Forest Lake, California which I did earlier.

Incorrect Picture
The picture shown for Harry G. Stoddard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_G._Stoddard) is incorrect. That is not Harry G. Stoddard; it is a picture of George Booth.
The picture I stored at my link https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/RPGJk1SMOemDEXmcOGbCXRtxx88MfvewZnZTZlCN9ID is of Harry Stoddard. I believe that is originally from his newspaper, The Worcester Telegram and Gazette, but I am not sure for copyright purposes.
- @PaxtonPhil: I have removed the picture from the article. The source claimed it was Stoddard, but seems to have disappeared. We can use another picture, even if it is protected by copyright, on the basis of "fair use", but would have to have some evidence that it was of Stoddard. The Telegram & Gazette would be a good source. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:34, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

Your recent change to use a template on this page seems to have broken the category sorting. The page should be sorted under "P" but it sorts under "L" instead. I tried to correct it but without luck. pburka (talk) 22:08, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Pburka: I think it is fixed. But should the list be under "pigs" as well as "lists of pigs"? Aymatth2 (talk) 22:15, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- Depends on the category. In Lists of species it should be under "P", since every member of the category starts with "List" or "Lists". pburka (talk) 22:17, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Amazon Rainforest map coordinates?
Greetings from Amsterdam, NL. I am searching for a polygon with the coordinates of the Amazon rainforest, eg the basin and the biome as you produced for a.o. Wikipedia. Maybe you can send me in the right direction.
All the best
- For File:Amazon biome outline map.svg I roughly traced the outlines at Inside the Amazon and then fitted them over File:South America satellite orthographic2.png. As I recall it was hard to get a good fit because the underlying images were taken from slightly different perspectives. The boundary of the biome is of course approximate. Probably somewhere there is a polygon for the basin, but I have no idea where. Aymatth2 (talk) 16:29, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

CFD about bishops of the Church of East / Persian bishops
Hey there, next time there's a CFD going on, like in Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2021_August_11#Bishops_of_the_Church_of_the_East, please don't suddenly create new categories and relocate the contents while the CFD is going on. It makes it very difficult for those who are participating in the discussion as well as the closing admin to track what has happened to the original categories. The proper procedure is to propose a new merge/rename target in the CFD, commonly called an "alt merge" or "alt rename." If others agree with that target, they'll tag along or adjust their votes as necessary. Thanks, bibliomaniac15 04:42, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Bibliomaniac15: I apologize. My thinking was that there was clear consensus that the categories like "1st-century bishops of the Church of the East" made no sense because the Church of the East did not exist until the 5th century, but there was value in keeping these "eastern" bishops separate from the general "1st-century bishops" category. Still, I should not have made the change while the discussion was still open. Aymatth2 (talk) 11:45, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of living actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Does that look like a deletion consensus to you?? It's a clear "no consensus" to delete.. † Encyclopædius 10:29, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
- Certainly on votes there was no concensus. I rather like lists like that because they encourage readers to browse. There is a valid point that the list would eventually empty out as the last survivors died, but that could be fixed by renaming it to something like "List of centenarian actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood." Another point, which I think is weak, is that there may be no reliable source that gives the list as a whole, so it is a product of original research. You could challenge the deletion. I did that for Forest Lake Resort in May (Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2021 May 18) and got it restored. The key is to avoid naming voters or rearguing the case, but to show why the closure did not reflect a clear consensus. A fine line. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:11, 19 September 2021 (UTC)

Way way too much on the history for the main town article. Would you be willing to split it into a separate history article? Looks interesting anyway. † Encyclopædius 10:13, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
- That is a difficult one. I agree that it is mostly history and says very little about the town itself. But Google Maps 7°42′54″N 26°11′42″E / 7.7151°N 26.1950°E does not show much there now, so maybe there is not much to say about the physical town. A split would have to be discussed and agreed on the talk page. Some of the material probably belongs in Al-Zubayr Rahma Mansur and some in Bahr el Ghazal (region of South Sudan). I would have to think about it more. Aymatth2 (talk) 12:53, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the Western Sahara work. Another of those areas with astonishingly poor coverage, though it is largely desert. I'll have to do a scan of countries again sometime and find our weakest areas geographically. I still think that global Geograph project to photograph different grid squares of the planet was an excellent idea but nothing came of it. At one stage I was in talks with the developers of Geograph and some of the Wiki Tech guys to merge with Wikimedia and scale it globally. And I discussed the idea of giving grants to photographers to photograph "Lonely Planet" type weak areas with poor photographic coverage, think rural Chad etc. Of course this was pre-COVID.₪ Encyclopædius 18:05, 21 October 2021 (UTC)

- -( Were you thinking along these lines Automated essay scoring such as https://edres.org//betsy/
- I am interested in it for very low ranked articles, as one tool for editors who are trying to fix up all the tagging by wikipedia:new page patrol. Wakelamp d[@-@]b (talk) 12:40, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
- The bot would rely on ORES to score the articles, which tries to emulate the rating a human would give. I don't know if ORES uses Bayesian networks. The bot would try to solve two problems.
- Articles often get assessed "stub" after the first version is saved, then never reassessed even when they have been expanded considerably. The bot would run after any significant expansion, so would revise the initial assessments
- Assessments are often poor. See WP:Assessing articles. ORES would give more consistent results.
- The problem with ORES is that it may copy the bad habits of humans and assess short articles as stub and long ones as C regardless of actual quality and completeness. I am a bit pessimistic, but at least if there were a bot it would help and could be improved. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:07, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

Figured you'd want to know, as you made the article: This is finally up at Featured picture candidates. I kind of had to sit on it for a while due to... long story short, the latest this could have been made was 1925, and I wanted to make sure this would have no copyright issues before nominating it, which meant waiting for the slow march of American copyright to put this definitively into out of copyright there.
I'll let you know how it goes, but... other than featured pictures being in a very slow period right now, I'm not seeing much problems. If it doesn't pass now, I'll just... renominate it in a few months.

Hi, thanks for adding the language. Can you tell me where to find a list of the Indigenous Australian languages so I can fix some of these too. All I can find are the 2-letter codes not the 3-letter ones. Thanks Kerry (talk) 03:54, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Kerry Raymond: There is a list at wikt:Appendix:ISO 639-3 codes/Australia. Don't know how complete it is. Somewhere there must be a map. I search on the native name + modern name to try find the aboriginal group or language name, and then try to find the ISO code. If I cannot find the language anywhere, I code it like {{native name|und|name|paren=omit}}. If I can find the language name but cannot find a code for it, I code it like {{native name|mis|name|paren=omit}} (language). Sort of sad to see all these complex cultures being swept away. Aymatth2 (talk) 12:45, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
- Given there are many Indigenous Australian languages (and there's always arguments about which languages are similar enough to be considered the same or distinct), it probably isn't complete, but at least it's a good start. Your suggestions on how to use it are more helpful than what I read in the template documentation, so many thanks! In terms of a map, this map and this website (for Queensland only) may be helpful to you. The map is somewhat coarse-grained. For exmample, the islands off Brisbane (where I live) are shown on the map as Yuggera, but I know the Indigenous people there are the Quandamooka. And I would never write it as "Yuggera" but as "Jagera" (there are many spellings of the same language name), so it's complicated! But many of the alternative spellings are listed in the relevant article, so just plugging the name into the Wikipedia search may give you all the variant forms of it. Often the Indigenous names for places are known but the Indigenous language they come from is not known, as many language groups may have lived in that area and some of those languages are now extinct. Also Indigenous names were assigned by colonists based on their knowledge of Indigenous languages which they may have acquired in other areas. One example of this is Biloela in Queensland which means cockatoo but not in any local language; it is from the Eora language in the Sydney area, over 1000 km away. So don't feel bad if you can't figure it out, as it is truly complicated and some of the knowledge we need is now lost. Kerry (talk) 03:07, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

- I pumped it up a bit, but had to scrape the bottom of the barrel. Just a big, plain house built about 150 years ago. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:57, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
I just came across this article you wrote nearly 10 years ago and did a little bit of cleanup - would you be interested in nominating this as a Good Article? I haven't checked the image permissions and it will need a longer lead, but otherwise it looks pretty good at a glance. I'd be happy to review it, or to nominate it if you'd rather not do so yourself.
By the way, I love how you use hard returns on the end of each sentence. Makes the wiki markup so much easier to read! -- asilvering (talk) 20:15, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Asilvering: That was a long time ago. If you want to work it through the GA process, please feel free. Aymatth2 (talk) 20:42, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
- Sure thing! Thanks for all your work on it. -- asilvering (talk) 20:50, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
- Success! The cleanup I did was minimal, and the reviewer's changes even more so: the congratulations are all due to you. Thank you for writing it! -- asilvering (talk) 18:54, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Asilvering: That was fast! I was expecting a long, painful process. Congratulations. Aymatth2 (talk) 12:33, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
- It helps a lot that he could slide into the "Agriculture, food, and drink" category at the top of the nomination list, haha. -- asilvering (talk) 18:54, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

Ukrainian villages
I just expanded Bziv from a one line stub and can't believe how much is still missing, this category for Kyiv Oblast alone on Ukrainian Wiki has over 1100 villages and we only have a small handful of articles and only one article for the district Bziv is in. There has to be a database with population data and some basic facts which could be used to draw up a bot to create articles. We should have run something back in 2008 when Fritzpoll was coding a bot and all the inconsistencies we now have and the huge amount of missing articles would at least be on here with some basic facts.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:35, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
