It's a convention to help keep conversations together. I still forget wiki-etiquette sometimes - that redlink was a basic mistake - I should have linked to WikiGnome.

I have a couple of requests for you, given your evident knowledge and access to sources. Unfortunately Wikipedia:WikiProject Cetaceans seems dormant, so I'll ask you here, echoing MatthewVanitas above. In addition to the national articles that are missing, I see a gap in that we have no article on Whaling in the Arctic and Whaling in the Antarctic. (This time the redlinks are deliberate.) We have articles that touch on those subjects, e.g. Category:Whaling in Antarctica, but not one point to go to. If you'd consider creating those, especially the Arctic one, it would be a great contribution. Let me know if I can help with any questions you may have. Hunting bowhead whales in Australia

Hello. I saw that you added Australian whalers hunted bowhead whales. This is a northern species. I'm assuming you're referring to Australian vessels that were sent to the Arctic to hunt them? I don't have access to the cited source so I'm not sure what it said exactly. OM2003 (talk) 21:29, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

Australian whalers joined the rush to exploit the newly discovered whaling grounds around Baring Strait in the 1850s. Not much has been published about their involvement there. There is, however, information available in contemporary newspapers, some of which have become available in recent times. (Histragic (talk) 00:39, 23 April 2018 (UTC))

Whaling

I am still tinkering with the entries on whaling in Australia and the United Kingdom and have plans to expand or create entries for some of the better known entrepreneurs in the industry. Once that is done I will take a look at whaling in the Antarctic and Arctic and consider what I could contribute.

Thanks for considering Whaling in the Arctic (and Antarctic). As for the entrepreneurs, that would indeed be interesting. Our Category:Whaling firms lacks a central article. It was not unusual for ordinary seamen on whaling vessels to work their way up to the rank of captain. And captains did sometimes become the principal owner of multiple vessels after retiring from the sea. Histragic (talk) 08:35, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

The social element forms a substantial part of Wikipedia for some editors, and a negligible one for others. You'll see from userpages how individuals choose to present themselves to other editors. (I'm a bad example, as I haven't changed my page in years.) WikiProjects coalesce around a group collaboration; WikiProject Cetaceans is quiet, but I posted a question the other day and got a response. When disagreements arise over what should or shouldn't be in an article, its talkpage is the place to go, where reasonable arguments should rule the day, and a little humour sometimes helps. In the physical world, some attend chapter meet-ups, and editathons, for example, depending on geography. I hope you find what you want within Wikipedia. Subject for speedy deletion

Two things happened. Someone nominated the page for speedy deletion believing him to be a hoax. I then pressed the contested deletion after finding online evidence that he existed. That's the note you saw. Shortly thereafter I also removed the speedy deletion notice. Sorry for the confusion. In general leaving comments on your own talk page won't get much response. I came back here to recognize your work on more obscure historical figures otherwise I'd have never seen this. In the future I would suggest using an articles talk page, a user's talk page, or by pinging a user. If I can be of more help let me know by pinging me or leaving a message on my talk page. I think you're doing quite well at finding your way around the system, Histragic, all things considered. Another tip: in order to ping someone, e.g. Barkeep49, you need to include the whole name malarkey, so it generates a link and an alert to them. See what I did in the previous sentence? From strength to strength

Hello again, I'm so happy that you are sticking around and adding so much good new material to the encyclopedia. You are now at a stage where we can disagree on matters of taste. I observed something you had done, I thought "that's not good style; I'll find Manual of Style guidance to point out the error of your ways", and after some hunting around, I discover that you are doing things perfectly correctly, and that my preferred style is simply that, a preference, and your preference is equally valid. (And, in Wikipedia terms, if you get there first, i.e. by creating an article, you generally get to keep the style you set it up with. British v American v Australian English is one example.) So I still have a lot to learn.

I wanted to point out two ways to help your new articles attract a few eyeballs. The first is the WikiProjects. Every article has a talkpage, as you know, and even if there's nothing to talk about yet, i.e. no contentious edits to discuss, it shouldn't be a redlink. It should be blue, because every article should be within (i.e. drawn to the attention of) one or more WikiProjects. Take for example Talk:Thomas Sturge the elder (1749-1825). Which WikiProjects should you consider? Well, you could look at our directory. Or you could go to the talkpage of a similar biography, e.g. his son, and copy over the projects that seem relevant (e.g. Biography). That way, the editors of the named project will receive an alert to review the article.

The second way is to put your new article forward at "Did You Know". This will get any new (or 5x expanded) article onto the main page, for all to see. An overview of the rules is here. Good luck! Ping me if you need help. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 15:57, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

I take it that creating categories at the end of an article is a way of indexing it so that Wikipedia searches on those terms will find the article for inquirers. Yes, categories are very helpful. I've discovered many fascinating threads of connection that way. You have to add the category at the bottom of the article, not add the article to the category. The way they work is at Help:Category. I expect you might be interested in Category:Whaling, Category:Whalers (the people), Category:Whaling ships (although, confusingly, its main article is Whaler, an ambiguity we ought to iron out at some point), and possibly Category:Cetaceans.

You are of course very welcome to join any WikiProject that takes your fancy, but you don't have to join any. Putting the project on the talkpage of an article draws the attention of subject enthusiasts; it doesn't commit you to anything.

The main page, or home page, is simply this: front page of the English-language encyclopedia. The section on the left just below the Featured Article of the day is a list of "Did You Know" factoids, a good way to ensure your work finds a wider audience, usually for six hours or so.

The paragraph at the beginning of the section on bay whaling and the one at the end are based on wide reading of the subject over many years. please read the WP:Categories page - you are adding parent child/cousins and every relative you can find - please understand a more pedantic editor would come in and remove most of your word association. Categorisation

Hello. You appear to be adding articles to Category:Australian male writers, when they are already members of Category:Australian male novelists, which is a sub-category of the former. As it states at WP:SUBCAT, "Apart from certain exceptions (i.e. non-diffusing subcategories, see below), an article should be categorised as low down in the category hierarchy as possible, without duplication in parent categories above it". Torrens Island

Hi Histragic, I've deleted your addition to Torrens Island because it seems very unlikely. After the Parsee was wrecked on the Troubridge Shoal it's very unlikely that the crew and passengers had gone to "Torrens Island" which is in the Port River Estuary (on the other side of Gulf St Vincent), which by that time had become the shipping channel for Port Adelaide. If they'd got that far, there would have been no need to land on the island, as the port is only a short distance away. I suspect that if the source says "Torrens Island", then it may be a mistake. October 2018

Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Bartlett Adamson. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks! Pelagic whaling voyages in the 19th century were significant maritime ventures that involved thousand of pounds in expenditure and the employment of 30 or so crewmen. The journal kept aboard the Australian is one few Sydney whaling accounts to survive and is the only one to be published so far[1]. It is unusually informative and shows the voyage began in June 1836 and lasted for two years and took the vessel to the coast of New Zealand, among the islands of Tonga, to the Vesquez ground and to the Kermadac Islands before returing to Sydney with 720 barrels of sperm whale oil and 430 barrels of oil from right whales in June 1838. He is also mentioned several times in this article as a significant Sydney whaler[2]. So, yes, I think he qualifies as an Australian whaler.(Histragic (talk) 23:19, 19 January 2019 (UTC))

Hi Acad Ronin: The source is Eileen Reid Marcil, (1995), “The Charley-Man: a history of wooden shipbuilding at Quebec 1763-1893,” Quarry Press, Kingston, Ontario. ISBN 1-55082-093-1. There are a number of appendices. Appendix A contains a table of shipbuilders. Appendix B lists sailing ships built at Quebec and includes date of registry, name, rig, tonnage, measurements, builders and official number. Appendic C lists the same details for vessels built at Montreal and other outports. The specific page numbers are Alexander (p.367), British Army (368) and Wolfes Cove (386).

I have an interest in British and colonial shipping in the Pacific in the age of sail. Whenever I find a Wikipedia entry for a particular vessel of interest it is usually you who created it. Thanks for this. I have ordered the book through Interlibrary Loan and will photocopy the Appendices when it arrives. Adding the source and any additional info helps build out the article and improves our knowledge of shipping of the period. I am specializing, for no really good reason, in the period 1793-1815 +/-. I particularly like being able to link databases or books on roles (man of war, privateer, merchant ship, slaver, whaler, or East Indiaman) when a vessel moves through multiple roles. I also like linking in books on origins, such as Bristol or Whitby, and now Quebec. What we can do on Wikipedia is tie together all these great specialized sources. I am also glad that you have found articles I have created to be of interest. Given how specialized these articles are, I am surprised when anyone finds them. @I dream of horses: Thanks for reviewing the page on Rhys Richards. As a reader of Wikipedia articles I have noted the pages for popular singers, actors and novelists often contain a full list of their songs, books or movies. I would not like to think their achievements are any more significant than that of a good historian. With that in mind, the bibliography was added to the Rhys Richards page. One option might be for the biblioraphy to remain but for it to be hidden, as notes and sources usually are. I think you are going to find it hard to justify that - the journal is not at a threshold of notability that could justify a separate article - the important of clarifying WP:N is where there are suitable and adequate sources of WP:RS that are not aamh or similar sources... It might not be well known among Australian history journals generally but it has been around for almost 40 years now and is the leading maritime history journal in Australia. Please read WP:N and WP:RS in that case - I think it is one thing to assert something has been around for 40 years (I should know I have parts of the early volumes) - another thing to to think of it as notable enough to have a separate article - there are simply not enough independent third party sources to justify a separate article. Thanks for fixing the sandbox problem. I still think there is a case for a seperate article for The Great Circle. I too have written for it as well as others in the field. Favourable comment sometimes appears in those overseas journals that make clear they regard The Great Circle as on par with their own national maritime history journals. It is not just a favourable comment here or there - for WP:N of stand alone articles about Australian organisations journals it really needs quite considerable cross referencing or substantial evidence of recognition outside of the organisations own published materials. Some organisations and journals have articles - but they are border-line - and it would be much better to expand the material in the article where it is until such time as there is a point where critical weight accrues relevant to the material for another article. Hi Lexy, I added the lexicographer categories to those two entries. Then, on reflection I decided that I had misunderstood the meaning of the term lexicographer and so deleted them. As I now understand it, the term means a compiler of dictionaries of word meanings. While the word dictionary was used in the titles of the books compiled by the individuals concerned, they were not true dictionaries of word meanings but rather collections of biographies. Thanks for those kind words. I created the article in my sandbox. But when I came to launch it on Wikipedia I did something wrong and that original version is lost somewhere. I copied that draft on my iPad and entered that version on Wikipedia. However it lacks a lot of the coding for notes, images, etc. I have started to re-enter that coding but it a slow process with my limited technical skills.
