Collaboration of the Month

Magic Johnson has been chosen to be our very first Collaboration of the Month article. Although this is article is already a Good Article, it still can be improved. The goal is to improve this article by the end of May so that it can be nominated for Featured Article status. In particular, free-use images should be found for the article, all Manual of Style guidelines should be followed, and a neutral point of view should be maintained throughout the article. If there is anything you can do to improve the article, then please help out.

J. R. Richard

I don't think you addressed any of my recent concerns. 00:22, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Strong suggestion

Hi,

If you are going to run a script as a bot, I would like suggest that you create your own page i.e. User:Milk's Favorite Cookie/javascript conversion and then you can just the pieces of code that you understand to be robust. Lightmouse (talk) 13:05, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Great. Now can I just comment out or delete a few lines that I know will cause you problems? Lightmouse (talk) 13:16, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

OK. I have done some amendments now. I now strongly suggest that you do lots of pages as practice. Known issues include edits to quotes and edits to URL's. You will have to learn how to edit the script for yourself so that you can modify it. Lightmouse (talk) 13:43, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Have you considered a much less ambitious bot? You could pick one tiny thing to fix that is extremely unlikely to have false positives. Do a test run with 50 articles and review them carefully. Then apply for a bot licence. Once you are experienced you can expand your ambitions. Do the easy bits first. If you want, I can cut your code right down to some fixes where the false positive rate is much lower. Lightmouse (talk) 21:50, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Lou Gehrig

I'll do a complete review as requested. I'm on the fence for a few things in the article. I'll put the article on hold. I asked for a second opinion as well.User:calbear22 (talk) 16:35, 10 May 2008 (UTC)User:calbear22 (talk) 17:05, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Head Coach list promoted to feartured status

List of East Carolina Pirates head football coaches is rather enlightening. We should probably model the Pats one after this, and that could probably include removing the overbloated "history" section, most of which is redundant with information in the History of the New England Patriots article. --Jayron32.talk.contribs 18:16, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

reply

Oh, OK. I'll strike my cmt out and reword. RC-0722 247.5/1 20:02, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Milks, you appear to have nominated this article for DYK after it had already been DYKed, as a result of which I accidentally promoted it to the front page a second time. Could you please be more careful next time, by checking the discussion page of an article you want to nominate to ensure it doesn't already have a DYK? Thanks, Gatoclass (talk) 03:02, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

DYK nom

Updated DYK query On 11 May, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Herring Buss, which you recently nominated. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.
--Gatoclass (talk) 02:52, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations on your recent WP:FL. In case you do not know, we are running an experiment to choose the List of the Month and Lists of the Day for June. Feel free to nominate your list at User:TonyTheTiger/List of the Day/Nominees/200807 for consideration next month to be the July LOTM or a LOTD. If you would like to support this experiment the most important thing you can do is come by and vote at User:TonyTheTiger/List of the Day/voting/200806. My talk page is always open.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 05:11, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Falcons FLC

Hi MFC, just a quick note to say that the FLC process is undergoing change and as such I've been elected one of two Featured List Directors. That means that I'll probably end up being responsible for making the ultimate decision on whether a list be promoted. I'll check your list again and my director colleague, User:Scorpion0422 will end up deciding on its promotion. I'll get back to you. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:46, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

5/11 DYK

Updated DYK query On 11 May, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Amy Evans, which you recently nominated. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

My second new article

I've written another new article from scratch (Polish minority in Ireland) and also submitted it to DYK. Could you have a quick peek? I'm happy enough with it, but I'd like you to have a wee look. :-) Fribbler (talk) 23:36, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Re:DYK nom

I can't seem to find another hook with an inline citation. Any suggestions? -- RyRy5 (talkReview) 01:22, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the article suggestion. I nominated it. Also, can you find an image on Climate of North America that I am planning to self nom? There's a lot actually.

AFD Barnstar

If you are giving out the AfD Barnstar, I believe I qualify. I've been involved in both the discussions and in nominating articles for AfD consideration. Thanks! Ecoleetage (talk) 02:32, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

What happened, the barnstar offer was withdrawn? Ecoleetage (talk) 02:04, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, 10 days passed between the initial inquiry and my cueing you. Ecoleetage (talk) 02:18, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

As predicted, this script, with no signature, is beginning to appear all over FAC and FLC, with no signature attached from the capper, meaning I have to delete them. Please remove the script. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:47, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello again. The Highly Active Users project has gone through a complete revamping per popular demand. We believe this new format will make it easier for new editors to find assistance. However, with the new format, I must again ask you to verify your information on this page. I attempted to translate the data from the old version to the new, but with the extensive changes, I may have made some errors. Thanks again. Useight (talk) 04:26, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Graphic design request

I'm looking for someone to create one of the 3 awards for a major competition I am preparing to run in 2 months at the AWC. (It'll be the largest collaboration I've ever attempted to coordinate on Wikipedia - larger than the TOTD, bigger than the Help system redesign, and even more involved than the Main Page redesign.)

I'd like you to take a crack at the top award. A trophy.

The trophy will be a MAJOR award, to be held by the current Wikipedia World Champion, until someone surpasses the record, at which time the trophy passes to him, and so on throughout the competition. When the competition is over, the reigning champion will get to keep it forever. I need the image of the trophy only - I'll write up and design the rest of the award. The trophy's background should be transparent.

The trophy needs to look IMPRESSIVE. Impressive enough for users to want to take from someone else, and impressive enough to want to defend it against all comers. One of a kind.

On the top of the trophy should be a globe, with the wikipedia globe superimposed upon it (so you can see both the continents and the puzzle pieces. If the globe is held up with 2 hands, or on the back of Atlas, that would be COOL.

The theme is World Development - the contestants will be building a 200+ page navigation aid to the subject of geography on Wikipedia. It will cover all the countries of the world. So the body and base of the trophy should be built around the theme of geography if at all possible.

What do you say?

Will you give it a shot?

If you can come up with a better (even more impressive) design than that described above, I'm totally open to it.

I need the trophy soon so I can begin generating interest in the contest.

I hope you take on this challenge.

I look forward to your reply.

The Transhumanist 06:57, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

I would suggest you take it to Red Thunder, who's good an expert on Photoshop. I probably can make the trophy, but not a transparent background. « Milk's Favorite Cøøkie ( talk / contribs) 21:57, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
The GIMP can do transparent backgrounds. Though you would probably be able to understand the program a hell of a lot faster than me. By the way it's free, and from what I've been told, extremely powerful. You'll probably find it useful for a great many things. The Transhumanist 22:58, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

RFA thanks

Thanks for your support at my recent Request for adminship; it certainly gave me a smile to see a support vote there before I’d even had a chance to go back and make sure I’d transcluded it right! I hope you find I live up to your expectations. Best, Risker (talk) 13:33, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

I've added some of the things you've requested, I still have to do some work with the citing. If you could take a look again and see what else I should do, if there isn't anything else, should I renominate it for GA? Gamloverks (talk) 19:11, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Re-nomination of FLC

A few weeks ago you supported my nomination of the List of Pittsburgh Steelers head coaches for Featured List status. I think we both agree that it was removed from the FLC list too quickly. I have re-nominated the list, I would appreciate it if you could support it again. Thank you. Blackngold29 21:40, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

RfA thank-spam

Instinct/Archive 20, just a note of appreciation for your recent support of my request for adminship, which ended successfully with 112 supports, 2 opposes, and 1 neutral. If there's something I've realized during my RFA process this last week, it's that adminship is primarily about trust. I will strive to honour that trust in my future interactions with the community. Many thanks! Gatoclass (talk) 06:26, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks heaps Milks, much appreciated. Oh and thankyou for your own contributions to DYK, I've noticed your noms have improved out of sight in recent weeks and it's helping create better updates. Keep up the good work! Gatoclass (talk) 07:52, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Another award...

For another of the 3 awards under development, I used the Gimp to erase the globe and barnstar from this image, but I can't figure out how to turn the background transparent. File:Globe stand.pngI know there's a way, but I couldn't understand the Gimp's instructions on how to do it.

Maybe it will make more sense to you.

Once transparent, a new globe could be inserted in the stand.  :)

The Transhumanist 09:45, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

It was easier than I thought. Using the GIMP, all you need to do is create an alpha layer, then select the areas of the original background you want to be transparent and simply delete them. The the transparency from the alpha layer will be all that's left as background. Like this...

File:Globe stand with transparent background.png

Next, I found Image:Worldwind.png, extracted the Blue Marble, created a new layer in the globe stand image, and plopped the marble in...

File:Blue Marble in stand.png

I don't know how it compares to Photoshop, but the GIMP is one powerful program.

Then, starting with this...

... I modified it a lot and then super-imposed the puzzle over the Blue Marble, using another layer, and adjusting the layer's opacity down, to get this:

File:Blue Puzzle Marble in stand.png

Now all it needs is a passport.

I created this passport front cover, from scratch using the GIMP and Image:Wikipedia logo gold.png.

Since we want to turn it, we need to give it pages, that is, depth, because passports have a thickness to them.

So, one thing we could do is replace the cover of an existing pic of a passport laying down with our new cover. This entails adding to the selected pic an alpha layer, clearing the white background (by selecting and clearing it - in the edit menu), and adding an additional layer for our cover. Then the size, perspective, and rotation of the new cover will need to be changed to fit over the old cover.

Is this something you can do?

The Transhumanist 22:34, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

What about your resolution? On 14 March you undertook a task to become a mediator for the case, but since then, i.e more than two months later, nothing happened (probably because the other party hasn't responded), while the status of case is still "open" just as you put it at the very beginning. On 14 May, i.e. exactly two months later, User:EconomistBR asked me on my talk page to speed things up. He thought that my position is more correct than the other party's, so he started a talk section on the article talk page, but thus far he has not received any responses. I recommended that he referred to you, but he told me that he preferred to wait 4 days so that if nobody responded on the article talk page then he would add back all the changes I requested. I again recommended that he referred to you, but - as you can infer from his response on my talk page - he wouldn't like to do that. So I decided to refer to you and ask for your advice: What do you recommend that we do in our case? How should we procede from here? Eliko (talk) 15:53, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

I wrote the intro, which I heavily based on the List of New Jersey Devils head coaches which is a FL. It could still probably be expanded a little more though. Is there anything else big that the article needs? The New Jersey one lists all assistant coaches, but they aren't sourced, so I don't know where they would've gotten all that info.
