Decline reason: I cannot do anything about this without knowing the block ID at least, because I don't know which block to consider softening. — Daniel Case (talk) 06:40, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks User:Daniel Case I don’t know what happened in the first place but the block seems to have ended as mysteriously as it began. TY just the same and so sorry to bother. jengod (talk) 14:50, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Given that you've been editing here for 19 years (longer than me) without ever getting blocked, I think you should go to WP:IPECPROXY and apply for IP block exemption; you'd probably get it very easily (I'd do it myself but I'm not familiar enough with your editing to vouch for you, and they sort of stopped admins from giving IPBE away so readily some years ago). That would eliminate the need for having to do this. Daniel Case (talk) 19:06, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh thank you! I was very active in my first few years of involvement but then I got pulled away by work and kids and was fairly inactive for a long stretch. I’ll check out the IP thing you suggest. Best jengod (talk) 19:13, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of Philippe I, Duke of Orléans

[edit]

Hi, I saw on Template:Did you know nominations/Philippe I, Duke of Orléans that QPD failed. I am still relatively new to Wikipedia and have no idea what this means. Could you please let me know what's going on with that? Unlimitedlead (talk) 23:37, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think “relatively new” is the magic words. If you submit a lot of DYKs they want you to start reviewing other DYK submissions, aka “quid pro quo.” I’ll check the box. jengod (talk) 00:00, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. Thank you for the information Unlimitedlead (talk) 00:04, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh and it’s not failed overall just so you know it’s in the approved queue as far as I can see. (I’m new too.) It’ll be a while for before it appears on main page bc of backlog but it should be fine. If I’m wrong, ping me. jengod (talk) 00:10, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Schematic map of a model tank cascade system.jpeg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Schematic map of a model tank cascade system.jpeg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. I got to this from your Karl R. Free when I was checking it for the move to queue at DYK. I read the article and was like...hm, sounds like that mural might have gotten enough coverage to be notable twice since its unveiling. I kind of am wondering how many of those murals got enough attention back in the 30s/40s that we'd be able to get an article out of them. I added Dangers of the Mail to List of United States post office murals and List of Native American-themed murals, and none of the murals on either list has an article. I strongly suspect some of them had to have gotten comment at the time they were created, even if they haven't since. Valereee (talk) 17:51, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for tracking down some good images for the article. Been plugging away at the article for a while now, but haven't spent enough time on images (beyond the images that I already knew existed). — Rhododendrites talk \\ 19:18, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:Rhododendrites While I was looking for photos I started to suspect the photographer of so many great NYC bird photos on Commons might have contributed heavily to the article (I was right!) and thus been hesitant to over illustrate with their own stuff. It’s a great article. I brought to it only that I am not from NYC so I am attracted to grandiose skyline photos that loudly telegraph Birds in Big City. (LOL) cheers. jengod (talk) 19:33, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ha. Thanks. You are not wrong. Hopefully this changes soon, but there aren't many people taking pictures relevant to the article. I didn't do a great job of digging through Commons though, apparently. I like the historic birding photos and the ones that make it clear "this is NYC". Those aren't photos I think to take... — Rhododendrites talk \\ 02:49, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Nihon Shōgakkō fire

[edit]

On 15 December 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Nihon Shōgakkō fire, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the serial arsonist who started the fatal Nihon Shōgakkō fire confessed to starting at least 25 other California fires in the early 1920s? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Nihon Sho Gakko fire. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Nihon Shōgakkō fire), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Studebaker family

[edit]

Studebaker family doesn't really work as a disambiguation page - there is no article whose title will be easily confused with 'Studebaker family'. It could be a list article or a redirect to a list. I decided that a DAB page is needed anyway, so I have created Studebaker (disambiguation). Any objections to redirecting Studebaker family to Studebaker (disambiguation)#People with the surname? And also "the language used in this article suggests the person was a closeted homosexuality - is that what you meant?": I assume you meant homosexual, not homosexuality. Heavy Water (talk) 22:56, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Right on. My bad. Will fix. Thank you user:Heavy Water jengod (talk) 23:13, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Heavy Water (talk) 23:21, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Personally, I think that stuff is weird to advertise on your user page. They are unsourced contentious assertions about people. Since all are deceased, it is not a WP:BLPREMOVE issue, but I'm not sure it's the kind of thing you'd want to maintain. Elizium23 (talk) 23:23, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The first five are my opinion, 3 are dead, 2 are alive. The last 4 are just the obvious conclusion that comes from (a) reading the article and (b) having been around the block a few times. I will likely the remove in the interests of keeping the peace but I think there is a class of people who are the Least Reliable sources about their own biography, and I'm not sure we have a way to responsibly approach that. jengod (talk) 23:28, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with that for sure. My favorite loophole to WP:MEDRS is celebrities who diagnose themselves with a rare/popular/expensive mental or medical disorder in order to announce it on Twitter/Instagram. Bonus points for hereditary ones. How do you feel about Rachel Dolezal? Elizium23 (talk) 23:33, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wow. another one for the future Category:People who have been proven liars about five or more details of their own biography jengod (talk) 23:37, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The standard for all surname set indices is to include the nationalities of listed persons. Can you please explain why you removed them from this set index after I had added them per standard? Jalen Folf (talk) 17:59, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oh sorry User:JalenFolf! I didn't realize someone else did that. I thought I did that and didn't remember! I have confirmed since I created that page they're two members of the same family (uncle and nephew) so I thought it was weird that one was "English" and one was "British" -- it seemed like it should be both Brits or both English (or no nationality necessary since it says it's an English surname at the top). jengod (talk) 18:07, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
