Presidents of Colombia[edit]

Thank you for your message on my talk page. I responded there. I have a quick question about the spelling of the name of president Domingo Caicedo, which in Wikipedia is Domingo Caycedo. Ignacio Arismendi Posada, in his book Gobernantes Colombianos, Interprint Editors Ltd., Italgraf, Segunda Edición, Bogotá, Colombia, 1983, spells his name as Caicedo. I did a Google Colombia search and a Spanish Wikipedia search, and in both sites he is referred as to Domingo Caicedo y Santa María. Palease see http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domingo_Caicedo_y_Santa_Mar%C3%ADa. Do you think it might be advisable to correct the English version? Please advice. Well like I said, try reading Wikipedia:Citing sources to get an understanding on how to cite sources, when and how, its helpful. I also recommend you read over Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies) it is helpful specially on helping you create better opening paragraphs which is a key thing to master, and also read Wikipedia:Layout for how to organize the layout of you article it is helpful and I learned a lot from it.
On the issue of Caycedo/Caicedo the issue is one very common on olden names, Isabella I of Castile solves this issue by addressing the different names in the different languages of her kingdom, for Caycedo I think we should leave it as it is with the y because the website of the presidency [1] has his name "Caycedo" and so does the lablaa[2]. We can address this by making a reference after the initial introduction of the name in the introductory paragraph: <ref>The last name Caycedo is alternatively spelled Caicedo.</ref>. For the discrepancy on the place of death simply go with the highest source you can find (like the Colombian Academy of History, see Policarpa Salavarrieta to see how the discrepancies on her name and place of birth/death were addressed).
On the issue of images, it drives me f-ing crazy the lack of good images on the presidents of all people, and how Colombia unlike the US, or Brazilian governments do not release some of their work to the public domain, so be very careful on using images unless you know for a fact that the artist who made the painting or took the photograph has died over 75 years ago (Colombian law is weird like that). I will try to look for a better picture for Pedro Nel Ospina, even though it is always going to be difficult to look for. mijotoba (talk) 02:30, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The painting in the lablaa article of Pedro Neil Ospina cannot be used, it was painted by Rafael Salas Yepes in 1983 so it cannot be used for a good while, and even if we could upload it under fair use the resolution is terrible and the image would look 10 times worse than the actual image, so for now we have to content ourselves with that one. mijotoba (talk) 15:50, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hola Mijo, I have been working on improving, correcting and adding references to various Presidents of Colombia. Lately, I have been working on the page of the President of Colombia. I think it would be a very good idea to insert the chart called “Heads of State of Colombia”, which appears at the bottom page of most of the Presidents. Please go to the page of Rafael Reyes and scroll all the way down. At the bottom of the page you will find a very comprehensive chart called “Heads of State of Colombia”. This is what I am talking about. I think it is very well done, very clear and very helpful chaart, and I think this exact same chart should be placed on the page of President of Colombia. Ohh that one, that one is simple, just add the template {{Heads of state of Colombia}} to the bottom of every page just before the interwiki links to the other languages and the categories. I already added it to the President's page, I however cannot make it expand the way it is in the Reyes's page, I think it was created without the parameter to expand and therefore only expand if the article is short enough.mijotoba (talk) 23:33, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Colegio San Bartolomé[edit]

I have been working on the article on Colegio San Bartolomé la Merced, an orphan and a stub without references or links. In doing some research in lablaa.org and Google Colombia, I am now under the impression that there might be confusion here. It appears to be that there might be two different schools: 1) Colegio Mayor de San Bartolomé (http://www.sanbartolome.edu.co/inicio.html) and, 2) Colegio San Bartolomé La Merced (http://www.sanbartolo.edu.co/es/). In the Wiki article it seems that both are one and the same, but there is no conclusive evidence as to this fact or misunderstanding. Would you be able to help me sort this out? If they are different, they must be separated. If they are the same, it needs a lot of cleaning. And if the case is that they are different, a new page is going to be needed for either one and I am going to request your help and assistance in creating it. Please advice. Hi Grancafé, sorry I didn't respond to this, when I last saw that I had a new message it redirected me to the message below this one, so I didn't even see this one. Indeed, San Bartolomé is one of the great educational institutions of Colombia, Colegio San Bartolomé la Merced, however, is not this institution, the address that the article makes reference to is "Kr.5 No. 34-00" (which should be "Cr"...shouldn't?) and the address for the historical institution is "Carrera 7a número 9-96" according to their website. SB La Merced is a campus of the Colegio Mayor de San Bartolomé. La Merced has a historical and administrative conection to the Colegio Mayor, but it has a different history as it appears in its website [3]. Before a new article is created on the Mayor, this article should be fixed, the infobox completed accordingly and the history addressed as to make it pertinent to its subject and avoid any confusion with the other institution. The template {{distinguish2}} should also be added to redirect users to the correct article. I can help you on either, but right now I am working on two articles and will get to it eventually, don't worry about having a red link on an article, it might drive you crazy if you worry too much about red links, if you talk about the institution just link it as Colegio Mayor de San Bartolomé and we'll work on it later.mijotoba (talk) 23:28, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Colegios de San Bartolomé[edit]

I just found a very interesting website, through Google Colombia, Wikipedia ES, "Colegios de San Bartolomé" [4]. This is a very helpful website. For a fact, there are two different and distinctive schools: Colegios de San Bartolomé la Merced and Colegios Mayor de San Bartolomé. They need to be separated within the English version on Colegio San Bartolomé la Merced, as they are mingled and entangled. This is going to require a lot of time and work. One is the oldest school in Colombia and the other is a modern one.

MY QUESTION: Can I use the Spanish version as a source, to copy and translate the article and use the same references being used in [5]? This would make the job much easier. Please advice. Thanks, --Grancafé (talk) 21:20, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes you can use the Spanish version as a source, but cannot quote it directly, you can use the references used to re-source the article. But keep in mind the following:

Template:Citation (make sure you are citing in the correct format template to adequately attribute the sourced content and make it a habit of using this template and its derivatives to source in the future)

Citations and References[edit]

I don't understand the meaning of Template:Citation. I think I have been using a {reference} template to reference the articles. What is the difference between a citation and a reference? I have worked on at least 30 or 40 articles by now, trying to rehabilitate, restore and reference. I have used at least 10 to 15 references per article. That is a total of about 600 entries. It would be a terrible thing if all this work is not correctly done. Are they all wrong? Am I doing the referencing wrong? I really need your advice here, before I go any further. I honestly believed I was referencing every article correctly. I am doing exactly what my mentors taught me to do. Please clarify this matter at your earliest convenience. Yes and no. The reference template that you refer to is only to add the annotations at the bottom of the page in the "Reference" section; the annotation in it of themselves have to be in a citation template for what you like to call "aesthetics" and to keep with proper citation guidelines. If you ever took an College English class you might be familiar with different style guides like MLA, APA, Chicago or Turabian, Wikipedia's citation templates allows you to properly cite sources accordingly, so for example if you are citing a book you should include the Template:Cite book and use as many of the parameters as possible, or if you cite a newspaper you should use Template:Cite journal, or a vide Template:Cite video and so on. So for example if I were to cite the Ospina Coffee website I would use the following template:

Colombia has 1,048 municipalities[1]. I of course just made up your name and the date it was published since I have no idea when it was published, but for example you used a citation in the Ospina Coffee Company "Gobernantes Colombianos, Interprint, Ignacio Arismendi Posada, Page 176, Bogotá, Colombia, 1983" sure it has the information, is just presented the wrong way, it should be[2] that is of course using only the information that you put up there, but the ISBN or the OCLC numbers are very useful, as well as things like chapter, links, or translations of sections etc. This makes references easier to read and more accessible for readers as well as uniform. See Wikipedia:Citing sources for more information.

Simple, you just name the reference, so for example, the first time you use it you would <ref name="ospina">Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah</ref> or you could also use the citation template <ref name="ospina">{{Cite book|title=Bla....}}</ref>. THEN next time you want to use that same citation you use <ref name="ospina"/> and thats it no need to include a closing </ref> because that already is included in the second one as that includes a "/". hope that helps.

As long as it is for User talk pages it's ok I suppose, but be adviced that boldface is not accepted for emphasis in Wikipedia, but for 4 distinct uses, 3 of which do the boldface automatically (in short according to Wikipedia, you should only use boldface delibaretely for once purpose and thats in the article name at the beggining only), read Wikipedia:Boldface for more on when to use boldface and how to express emphasis. mijotoba (talk) 21:38, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Carlos E. Restrepo[edit]

Hello again. I also started working on the article on Carlos Eugenio Restrepo and I noticed that you have also worked on it substantially. This is perhaps one of the best articles on the Presidents of Colombia. I have also noticed that Mr. Restrepo is referred as Carlos Restrepo in several paragraphs. I am wondering if it would be OK to add the letter (E.) of his middle name, as he is best known as Carlos E. Restrepo. In the article he is referred sometimes as Restrepo, others as Carlos Restrepo and a few times as Carlos E. Restrepo. I think it would look much better, as a matter of aesthetics, if we could homogenize his name throughout the article. What do you think? Please advice. This is one of those times that my bad work catches up to me. I did use "Carlos Restrepo" after the subsequent mention of his name, back then however, I was debating on how to properly address him in the rest of the article because I was not aware of the Wikipedia Policy on Biographies' Naming. The article should be edited for sure, but only to take out the Carlos in the rest of the article and only leave Restrepo, this way avoiding the issue of middle initial. A Good Question[edit]

Here is a good question. Since it is most proper and customary in Colombia to use both last names, paternal and maternal, (you might know that usually people with a single last name are those illegitimate or born out of wedlock, most of the time when the father is unknown), would it be appropriate, for the biography of Colombian nationals, to use both of their last names? What do you think? Sometimes it might get very confusing, especially when there are other people in the same article with the same first last name. Your thoughts please. Yes it is a good question and one I have asked myself and have gone both ways before. At first I did do that, I used both last names on all of the articles I edited, after I had fought hard for the MVA, my HS and College to include both my last names in my documents why should I not pay the same respect to them. I however had a change of heart after becoming more familiar on how Wikipedia works, see Wikipedia has different universes, we are currently in the www.en.wikipedia.com universe, here, we speak Her Majesty's English, the Commonwealth adaptations or "American", and as far as all of them are concerned, people have just one last name and women have their husbands last name, so if we wish to inform english-speaking people about a Colombian person we have to use one last name only throught the article (minus the former introduction). I draw this belief from the Wikipedia:Use english standart, specially the part that says "In deciding whether and how to translate a foreign name into English, follow English-language usage." So for example, if you watch the BBC, ABC or CBC they refer to our President as President Uribe, not President Uribe Velez, and in fact it is seldom the case that Caracol or RCN refer to him with both last names, so it should be the case for Wikipedia in English, and only use one last name.
To properly address the situation, a template has been created {{Spanish name}}, it will direct users to the section on names that talks about how Colombian's et al formally use last names and it makes the distinction of which are the last names as well. If you insist on using both last names it will just confuse people, I know cause I live with that reality every time someone asks my name, so keep that in mind. mijotoba (talk) 00:30, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

lol, Eloquent? aww shucks I tries, but I found it a little ironic that on the Ospina Coffee website they stop using both last names after a while, Mariano Ospina, V? VI??? that is not Colombian, specially when they are talking about a Colombian person, or has the latest generation abandoned Colombian culture? and although possible in some scenarios, it should be "Mariano Ospina Perez, II", regardless my point is that just as Vs and VIs may have replaced the second last name in your names, it is just a way to adapt to the audience.
I appreciate that you have been reading further on Ospina Coffee Company. And I also appreciate your analysis and comments. As you well know, in Colombia we don’t use Senior (Sr.) and/or Junior (Jr.), or I, II or III, etc. I guess you are corrects in assuming that it is an adaptation, but not to the audience, but rather to Her Majesty's English, in keeping the protocol and style of dynasties. Well unfortunately, Sanclemente was either shy or ugly cause there are no photos of him online :( so we are stuck with this option. I could upload the pic on Flickr by the Banco de la Republica, but see for youself the conditions is in. I just answered your questions above, hope it helps, and yes the WP Colombia talk template is a way of keeping Colombia related articles within our scope, even if we lack a team to properly check them, I hope one day we do though.

Hi mentor editors, I just noticed that the article on the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia was arbitrary modified on February 20, 2010, at 16:00 by an editor VickyMa, deleting all my contributions with total disregard and without any comment, justification or reason; in my opinion, with total contempt. What should I do here to have my contributions inserted back into the article? I don’t want to do so just on my own initiative in order to avoid any argument or confrontation. Well I actually saw that and took a look at it myself, I didn't see the history of what he changed, but in a case as this, this is what I would do, and mind you I'm no administrator so I like you have very little power over these matters, I would ask the person why did he/she do that and work on what they thought was wrong, if no response in two days I would go ahead and make changes again and wait. Sometimes people forget to give a reason for their changes, which is ok, and sometimes is nothing more than a simple mistake. I saw the substantial work and improvement that you did to the article on the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia. Thank you very much; I truly appreciate your fine job. I noticed that under the section of History of the Federation, in the first paragraph you inserted a question as to who is Professor Frank Safford. He is Frank R. Safford, PhD Columbia 1965; you can find more info at [7]. Please incorporate this information as you may deem appropriate. I also noted the question (quantity) on paragraph two, same section, as to how many farmers were there in 1920? Andrés Uribe C. in his book “Brown Gold, the amazing story of coffee”[1] only mentions “the tens of thousands of small growers did more to develop the industry than any other group of producers”. I guess we can only find that exact figure in the archives of the Federation.

Well that is the hard part about editing, we have to be factual and clear, when someone says "tens of thousands" without any actual count is not professional or factual, how many is "tens of thousands"? how is that compared to the rest of the population? did it include farm families or just male farmers? who made the count? is there are a record, and like you said, only (and that is maybe) the federation has records and without direct knowledge of that we cannot say tens of thousands. Given this inconsistency the line should read "By 1920 many farmers were developing the industry by planting, processing, and selling their product with no help from the government" this way avoids mentioning any vague quantities, and it also avoids that part of "had done more to develop the industry than any other group" I mean, they just "planted, processed and sold" coffee, what else would a coffee farmer do but plant, process and sell coffee? and how can you compare what one group does with what another group does, glorying farmers does not serve the article, let's leave that in the Federation's website, in an encyclopaedic article just the facts are presented, and besides, this article talks about the federation not coffee industry in Colombia as a whole since not all farmers belonged to the federation and most were not actively looking to develop such industry but merely farming.
On the who question is tricky, encyclopaedic articles don't usually quote people but merely present information, that is more commonplace in newspapers and textbooks. The way it was presented in the article clearly left out who he was, and even then its not clear who he is or what authority he has. The link you added next to his name is not appropriate in the article either, sure you are showing who he is, but that link should be in his article not on this one, what I would do is take out his name completely: "During the XIX Century an economic transformation took place in Colombia, going..." First of all, this will make it more like an article and less as a quote, and second there is no need to have his name, you have referenced that statement properly and if people click on that reference they will see who said, where, and when "Safford, Frank R.; Commerce and Enterprise in Central Colombia ..."
I will leave this up to you if you want to change it. Also keep an eye on the way you present foreign terms, I had fixed this in the history part but now that you added more you might want to do it, for example, "“Gerentes” (general managers)" there is no need to use the Spanish term, gerente means manager, it confuses people when you translate terms like these when there is no need, additionally you present the term in English first and then may present it in parenthesis in Spanish, for example if you go to the article Greece it will start "Greece /ˈɡriːs/ (help·info) (Greek: Ελλάδα...) ... officially the Hellenic Republic (Ελληνική Δημοκρατία...) not the other way around. Other unnecessary uses of spanish include "Don Arturo Gómez, during his 18 years tenure as “Gerente de la Federación”" why present the title in Spanish? Bob in Wisconsin does not know what gerente is, and given that he is from Wisconsin he might just think that means lawnmower, so please, Use English! (Wikipedia:Use English, Wikipedia:Foreign terms) And since I used that quote, do not use the term Don, its an honorific and its not official, if you use Don on him you have to use it on everyone and besides, every old person gets respectufully called Don so just avoid using that term in all articles, this is what the other editors are talking about when they say try to present a neutral point of view and unbiased, Don is a peacock term (Wikipedia:Avoid peacock terms) and thats bad. It takes some time to become an expert editor. I have been doing this for just over two months, and I have a lot to learn yet. On the term Don I insist on it being a peacock term, the example you give proves my point, Lord Byron was not called Lord just out of respect, he was Lord because he is the 6th Baron Byron, in British Peerage Barons hold the title Lord, and in British law is illegal to use the honorific Lord unless you have a rightful claim to royal peerage, so you see as where Lord is a peacock term it is a legal peacock term, he earned it so to speak, just as Dr., Don on the other hand is not and that's what makes it a peacock term because anyone can have it, but adding it adds a false sense of grandeur. mijotoba (talk) 17:59, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is looking pretty good. I would like to suggest that for the three columns on the left, where [# de facto], [# de jure] and [# Uniuqe], a foot note or link needs to be added to explain and clarify what is the criteria to establish this particular order. The way it is right now, it is impossible to determine why are they in such an order. Hello Mijotoba, as you've noticed I have tagged a number of your image uploads for fair use review. Please note that we cannot accept non-free photographs of people who are still alive, because a new free photograph of them could in principle be created. Also, for historical personalities, we cannot accept modern portrait paintings where the painting is still copyrighted, as long as we are using it merely to show the person, and not for commentary about the artwork. For personalities of the recent past (e.g. 1950s/1960s), it is also better to use photographs than contemporary portrait paintings, because photographs are more likely to lose copyright protection earlier. Also, for political figures such as state presidents, it is worth checking if there are truly free alternatives, especially {{PD-USGov}} ones (wouldn't most Colombian presidents have visited Washington at some point during their tenure?) Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup![edit]

  1. At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.

DC Meetup 23 & Annual Membership Meeting

Wikimedia District of Columbia, the newest officially recognized chapter, is holding its Annual Membership Meeting at 1pm on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at the Tenley-Friendship Neighborhood Library.

Agenda items include:

  • election of the Board of Directors for the next two years
  • approval of a budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year
  • report on the activities and accomplishments of the past year
  • social gathering afterwards at a nearby restaurant

Candidate nominations are open until 11:59pm EDT on Saturday, September 24. We encourage you to consider being a candidate. (see see candidate instructions)

The meeting is open to both the general public and members from within the DC-MD-VA-WV-DE region and beyond. We encourage everyone to attend!

Red Link Recovery[edit]

Hello. As a Spanish-speaking WikiGnome, I'd like to solicit your help in testing a new tool. For a few years now, the Red Link Recovery Project has been using the Red Link Recovery Live tool to track down and fix unnecessarily red links in articles. Recently, the tool has been expanded to work on non-English Wikipedias. A small set of suggested fixes for red-links on the Spanish-language Wikipedia have been prepared and I'm hoping to interest some Spanish-language speakers (such as yourself) to work through them.

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us!
