"Lineal"

Greetings. A formatting tip—lineal championship should absolutely not be displayed as "Lineal". It is simply "lineal", with no italics or title-case capital. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 12:48, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

I really wouldn't recommend this. Capitalising and italicising the word "lineal" goes against any and all Wikipedia MOS guidelines. Same way as weight classes are not capitalised—it is a concept, not a proper noun. This is basic stuff. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 14:46, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Are you really sure you want to edit war over this? I can tell you straight up that you don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to this formatting issue. The RfC at WikiProject Boxing (to which I'm linking you for a second time) came to a clear consensus on how to format "lineal", weight classes and sanctioning bodies. Specifically, I'd like to point you to this section at MOS:TITLE:

There are cases in which the title should be in neither italics nor quotation marks (though many are capitalized): [...] Descriptive titles: a reference to or description of a work or part of a work when not using its actual or conventional title: 137th graduation address, conference keynote speech, an introductory aria, Satie's furniture music, State of the Union address, Nixon's Checkers speech; also: the season finale of Game of Thrones, not the "Season Finale" of Game of Thrones

... which applies directly to lineal championships/titles. They are merely a conceptual achievement—one that is neither handed out in the form of a championship belt nor granted as an official status by a boxing governing body (TBRB does not count, as they make no mention of the word "lineal" on their website). Lineal titles, take #2

So much for that olive branch. Do you really want to do this again? You have no chance of 'winning' on this formatting issue, as multiple sources (which I dig up earlier) support lineal titles being presented in lower case without italics—not "Lineal". If we end up edit-warring again, with insults aplenty from you, I propose we take this straight to WP:DRN. If no response, then perhaps WP:AN3 could have a look if it gets hectic. Mayweather's record is a long and complicated one, and MOS:BOX was still in its early stages when I last tried to spruce it up. I'll give his record another try only after the MOS is absolutely finalised across WP. Just to make it clear, I haven't made up any of these formats myself just for fun—I'm simply going by WP's own MOS regarding capitalisation and italics. Per this, you might want to know:

"In boxing, for a KO to occur a fighter must fail to beat the count, so TKO refers to any situation when the referee, cornerman, physician, or fighter stops the fight any time during a round when there is no ten count"

Juan Manuel Márquez / WBO Super titles

The WBO honorary titles that Márquez held should not be deleted as they are sourceable from the WBO's website, albeit with a lot of searching using the year and month filters. I don't really remember Marquez winning a WBO Super at Lightweight and Jr welter. He just won the full version of WBO but not as the Super champion status. Can you provide me a source or link confirming that award? Pacphobia (talk) 04:56, 1 October 2016 (UTC)

It's an interesting one, and I also didn't know about it until recently. Have a look at the WBO Super subsection for an explanation on what the "title" actually is. It won't mentioned at the list of current world boxing champions, because it doesn't work in the same way as WBA Super. The WBO's version is just an honorary award, like WBO Champion of the Decade; not a championship status that can be won or lost in the ring, and has nothing whatsoever to do with full championship or interim status (meaning there's no such thing as a "Regular" WBO champion).

If you look at the top of the WBO website's champions section, there's a detailed search function. That's what I used to narrow down the periods of time when Márquez (along with others like Hopkins, Calzaghe, etc.) held the WBO Super recognition. For example, compare the rankings from April 2009 (WBO > 2009 > April) to May 2009; that is when they gave him Super recognition at lightweight for the first time. Adding of inappropriate cyberboxingzone.com cites

I am noticing the repeated adding of links to a champs list at cyberboxingzone.com across many boxer biography articles, especially to their leads, where such cites tend to be seen as unnecessary. This is giving the impression of a deliberate promotion of this specific stats site. I am removing all cites having a link to the champs list page. I advise that this practice be ceased because if others agree that the adding of promotional links is occurring, it could be used as a pretense for administrative action, up to and including a block. Stevie, I just want to clarify to you it's not a promotional links. If you notice on my edits, I only add (CBZ lineal champions list) link on articles of boxers who held the lineal championships and CBZ website is the only reliable source I found on internet. There's also the linealchamps.com website but their lineal champions lists are very questionable. If you still see it as a promotional link, then could you advice me or somehow show me how can I use that link properly from cbz website without violating WP:LEAD? CBZ the only reliable source on the Internet for this information? That is ridiculous on its head. Also, per WP:LEAD, we normally don't use cites in the lead for information that is already cited in the rest of the article. There is no necessity for these CBZ links in leads. I say yes. CBZ has the official list of lineal champions in boxing so why look for other sources which are not reliable? Are you telling me that I'm not allowed to use CBZ website for linking purposes even in the body section of an article? Pacphobia (talk) 14:22, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

I really like the CBZ site, and the lineal champions article on here, but I can totally see why it would be considered questionable to be used on WP. If a list of content is supported by just one site, across the whole Internet, then unfortunately it'll likely to be torn to shreds by WP:RS and WP:PRIMARY. Other than CBZ, are there any other sources for a complete list of lineal champions, like a magazine or something in print? It'd help a lot. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 19:05, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

The linealchamps.com website is also a good source but they only recognize 8 divisions maybe I could try it. I really cant find any better alternative source other than CBZ. I did all the searching on google but all the results are linked from CBZ website. CBZ has a great historic records and informations of old time boxing and they also have bio and accurate records of boxers so its more like a boxing history and record keeper website. I was really surprised that some users really hate this website. Even a bio of a boxer from that website cannot be linked on boxing articles WTF.. I noticed a few of these citations and don't think they belong. The lead summarizes the most important things in the article. Try to put the citations in the body of the article if it would be improved by having a citation to support that material. For some of the material you are adding the citations to, you can probably find a better source than CBZ. Cyber Boxing Zone citation

Hi, Can you explain why you added the Cyber Boxing Zone citation to the Jackie Paterson article after this sentence: "The world title fight, held at Hampden Park in Glasgow, lasted only a minute, as Paterson caught Kane early in the first round putting him down twice, before he was counted out the second time."?--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 21:51, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
