B&M Retail Ltd. (also known as B&M Bargains, Bargain Madness and the larger B&M Homestore) is a retail chain of 296 variety stores operating in the United Kingdom since 1976 and now serving 2 million shoppers a week.
Based at a 620,000 ft2 head office and distribution centre, in Liverpool, in North West England, the company has moved from being a regional retailer into an operator with a more-national base.[4]

History [edit]
| This section requires expansion with: prose on history from 1976 to 2005. (December 2010) |
The business was started by Matt Smale, a Saltcoats based entrepreneur in 1976. It was purchased by brothers Simon and Bobby Arora from private-equity firm Phildrew Ventures in 2005, at which time the company had twenty-one stores and an annual revenue of £65 million.[5] Younger brother Robin Arora joined the business in the Spring of 2008.
Growth [edit]
It saw significant growth between 2006 and 2012 by acquiring the Glyn Webb chain of do-it-yourself (DIY) stores and converting them into its B&M Homestore format.[6] The company also acquired[when?] a number of former Kwik Save,[7] Woolworths and Au-Naturale stores within its operational regions.
It has over 296 stores[5] and is looking for further gradual expansion, such as committing to increase its store numbers to 600 across the UK.[4]
More recently it has bought some Focus DIY stores in May 2011, to be converted to the B&M Homestore format.
Customer base [edit]
More than half of the company's shoppers are over age fifty six.[4]
The business sells household textiles, homewares, furniture, household goods, wall decor, toys, camping, outdoor living and gardening goods, toys, seasonal goods, DIY products, food, drink, confectionery and toiletries. Now (September 2012) some stores have started selling National Lottery goods.
It claims to have something for all the family.
The business employs over 12,000 staff, including part-time staff. In 2010 it won KPMG Employee Growth award amongst Fast Track companies. As of June 2009, it was attracting, on average, 1.25 million customers per week into its stores.[3]
Financial performance [edit]
The company saw a sharp increase in sales and profit during the late-2000s economic downturn.[4][clarification needed]

Press comment — The Sunday Times Top Track [edit]
It was featured repeatedly in the[when?] by The Sunday Times Fast Track as one of the 100-fastest-growing private companies in the UK. This follows a ranking, earlier that year, in the paper's Top Track, a listing of the largest 100 mid-sized private companies in the UK.[12]
