Punctuation in article titles?

If there is a "?" or a "!" in the title of a work of art, such as a novel or film, should I include that punctuation in the article title itself?

A tool for finding the right category

This is a newbie question: are there any handy tools for searching through categories? So far, I have been doing all my "searching" manually, by browsing through Special:Categories or Portal:Contents/Categories, which is a real pain. You can always try a Google search. For more precise searching, you can go to Special:Search (which is one of the "Special" pages -- a link to Special pages is in the bottom of the Toolbox over in the far left side of the page), put in the term that you want, click the Advanced button, then unclick the checkbox next to "Article" and check the box next to "Category", which will search for your term only in categories. Plagiarism?

Hey helpful editor, I was doing my rounds wikifying and ran across an article that is a blatant copy-and-paste job from a page on another website. The article Human rights in Mauritania cites this page a total of 84 times! So I checked it out: it is a report written by the U.S. Department of State. I skimmed WP:PD and I think because it is a work of the Federal Government it is not eligible for copyright protection. But still, the whole paper, verbatim? Isn't that frowned upon? What is to be done? Maybe a {{proposed deletion}}, or a {{db-copyvio}}? Or maybe something less drastic, like proposing a major re-write/restructuring on the article's talk page? The editor who did the copy-and-pasting was at least forthright in saying that the content was just a dump from a US Govt report. Thanks for the advice. If the source is public domain, the article is not eligible for speedy deletion as copyright violation. Proposed deletion would be unwise as well: It's better to have a bad-written article about a notable subject than no article at all because the former invites people to work on it. I would suggest you list it at Wikipedia:Copyright problems to get input whether it's really public domain and if it is, tag it accordingly, for example with {{rewrite}}. Ya I'm pretty much done—I went through all the sections and did my best to improve the grammar, flow, etc. I didn't touch the lead section at all, as the GA discussion on Talk:Common Vampire Bat indicated that it should be left for last so that it can accurately summarize the content of the rest of the article. There was only one more thing I wanted to do, that is using this reference to add some info and formalize the tone of the Feeding section. I'll look over it later tonight and tweak a sentence or two, then slap a GOCE stamp on the talk page. You've done a lot of great work on the article; it's been my pleasure to help out. Cheers. How do I avoid a lame edit war?

Here's the story. I was going through the Wikify back log when I came across this article. I wasn't able to wikify it, so instead I tagged it with three templates: conflict-of-interst, no-lead, and jargon, which I hoped would inform readers and attract other (more experienced) editors to address the problems. After some more thought, I convinced myself that the article wasn't notable and that the main contributor was using Wikipedia as a soapbox to promote and lend credibility to the subject of the article—so I PROD'd it. The main contributor reverted the PROD (which is fine) and wrote a rather scathing response on the talk page. I tried to be as civil as I could in my response, and explained my reasons for tagging and proposing deletion. Then I nominated the article for deletion, and the main contributor responded by removing my three tags.

I stand by my reasons for nominating it for deletion, and I'll accept (and learn from) whatever they decide at AfD. But even if it's not deleted, I think the tags I put up are appropriate and may eventually help improve the quality of the article. I would like to put the tags back up and add a {{WikiProject Psychology}} template the talk page, because if the article isn't deleted then they could really help it in the long run. But the main contributor seems to think he owns the article, and I think whatever I do will just be reverted.

I appreciate his position—I would be pissed too if someone PROD'd my article. But I would like to think I could count to ten and provide a civil and rational argument in favor of its being kept. Anyway, how do I avoid an edit war? Should I just let AfD run its course and leave this one alone? I would appreciate another opinion, as it is just me and the main contributor at odds right now. I am trying to see this as an opportunity to learn something about conflict resolution and Wikipedia policy. Am I just insane? Thanks. Braincricket (talk) 23:44, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Having only glanced at the situation briefly I can whole heartedly state that the way you portray the situation above it seems clear that you are doing things the correct way... but I will look into the specifics that you mention in detail shortly. The only thing you might have considered, in addition to the steps taken above, would have been to request a third opinion prior to the AFD nomination. Now that AFD is open you will essentially be getting many third-opinions, and those should include comments on what tags or what further improvements should be made to the article if it is kept. Thanks for the kind words! Ya, I started playing a Paladin with the 4th ed. rules about a year ago, but I just moved to a new city and haven't yet found a group to play with here. The January drive is winding down and I've been using CatScan to find sci-fi and fantasy related articles. Right now I am picking through The Orcs of Thar before moving on to Call of Cthulhu Collectible Card Game. I don't play the card game but I love H. P. Lovecraft. Best regards. Euphemism

Hello! Saw your edit of "died" over "passed away" on Balgandharva (film). Does this WP:EUPHEMISM apply for plot stories also? Like of films or novels or likewise? These are stories and we dont tell the actual facts (even if the film is based on some real-life incident). This figure of speech in the plot summary like sections can be used to present the way it is shown in the film. Why do we have to used "died" in it? Hey Animeshkulkarni! There have been two discussions about this here and here. One of the arguments against using "passed away" is that it has non-neutral, peaceful, sad, or spiritual connotations. For example, the Buddha "passed away" but Adolf Hitler "died". I haven't seen Balgandharva, but you're saying that those peaceful or tragic connotations are appropriate when talking about Narayan's daughter? If so, why not just add a little more detail to make it explicit: "She died peacefully in her bed", or "...his daughter died. Despite his overwhelming emotional loss, he went ahead with the performance..." I think by avoiding the use of "passed away" in that manner, you could actually add clarity and depth to the plot summary. :-)
Another argument against using "passed away" is that it could introduce ambiguity in certain contexts, especially if the reader is not fluent in English. For example, "to pass away" also means "to move on" or "to depart". So one could interpret the sentence as "On the opening of his play, his daughter moved away (to a different city)." It makes sense in context, because that could cause Narayan emotional distress if he were close with his daughter; having never seen the film, and as a still-learning English speaker, one might (mistakenly) think that was what the sentence meant. By using "died", you make it very clear what you mean.
Well, that's my opinion. If you still think that "passed away" would do better in the article, then by all means go for it. But I think the plot summary could be even better if you used "died" and elaborated on those ideas which "passed away" only implies. What do you think? Best Regards. Declination edits

Hi:

You used AWB to make some edits to the Declination article. Mostly, you changed ordinal numbers in dates to cardinal ones, e.g. you changed February 5th to February 5.

But in most of the English-speaking world, ordinal numbers are preferred in this context. Today's date, written by anyone in Britain, India, etc., is February 5th, or 5th February.

When I first came to North America from Britain, I was surprised to see cardinal numbers used. For the first 30+ years of my life, I had never encountered them used this way.

Wikipedia is supposed to be international. Usage that is accepted anywhere is accepted here. Right?

Hey DOwenWilliams! Thanks for bringing this to my attention—it is possible to make a lot of mistakes very quickly with AWB. I appreciate that in your experience you've used ordinals to write dates, but I'm not sure if I would agree that most of the English-speaking world uses them in that way, and that was not my experience when I studied in London. At any rate, the Wikipedia Manual of Style states that Wikipedia does not use ordinals for dates. The Chicago Manual of Style states "When specific dates are expressed, cardinal numbers are used, although these may be pronounced as ordinals."[1] Ordinals are used if the day is mentioned without the month or year (in which case it is usually spelled out), e.g. "On November 5, McManus declared victory. By the twenty-fifth, most of his supporters had deserted him."[1] The BBC News website uses cardinal numbers for their dates, as does Al Jazeera English and The Times of India. I was just trying to conform to the Wikipedia MoS for the sake of consistency across the encyclopedia. If you think the MoS "Dates and numbers" section should be amended, you can always discuss it on the talk page (someone already brought it up in this section). Best regards. Admittedly, it is nearly 40 years since I lived in England, and usage there may have (certainly has, in other contexts) changed since then. I looked up the Wikipedia article on Calendar date, and was told that using cardinal numbers in dates is a common, but far from universal, usage in British English. Okay. Maybe so. But, even if cardinals are common, ordinals are certainly accepted, so in the interest of universal acceptability, surely they should be accepted in Wikipedia too.
Incidentally, I doubt that many Brits would let their use of English be dictated by anything called the "Chicago Manual of Style", even if it does have an office in London. It probably includes such barbarisms as saying the the comma a few words back should be inside the quotation marks! Such abuse would make any educated Briton cringe.
I edited another article this afternoon, and used the spelling "metre". Then I noticed that elsewhere in the same article someone had put "meter". A bit of research showed me that "metre" (meaning a unit of distance) is correct even in the United States, but "meter", in that sense, is not accepted in many other countries. So what should Wikipedia do? My own feeling is that we should accept anything that is regarded as correct anywhere. If an author uses "metre" or "meter", or even both in the same sentence, we should just accept what he writes, without correcting it. That's the general attitude here in Canada, where I now live, where U.S. and British usages are both generally employed. Usage diversity enriches Canadian English. It would similarly enrich Wikipedia.

Haha, you got me with the Chicago MoS—unfortunately that's the only style guide I have sitting around the house at the moment. You'll be glad to know that WP uses the logical quotation (British) style! As for metre vs. meter and other spelling differences, the rule of thumb is to retain the original variety and to remain consistent within the article. There are templates you can add to the talk page so editors know which spellings should be used. So you're right, when there is no "correct" way of writing something, we should embrace diversity. I still think there is consensus that dates should be cardinals, unless you are talking about non-specific dates (e.g. "the first of the month"). You're right. It was WikiProject TypoScan that brought me to the article, and the folks over there like it when you include a link to their project in the edit summary. Obviously I decided to delete that paragraph instead of just correcting the typo in it. Maybe I should add "and cleanup" to my edit summary or something that's a bit more accurate when I make larger changes like that actually representative of the changes I make. NP. I'm amazed that the text had lingered so long (March 2010!) so I'm glad it had a typo otherwise it might have remained until 3010! I think your idea of an addition is a good one. It just makes it easier for people who have the articles on their watchlist. If something like that isn't possible with AWB or a pain, don't worry . Was just a thought. July 2012 Study of authors of health-related Wikipedia pages

Dear Author/Braincricket

My name is Nuša Farič and I am a Health Psychology MSc student at University College London (UCL). I am currently running a quantitative study entitled Who edits health-related Wikipedia pages and why? I am interested in the editorial experience of people who edit health-related Wikipedia pages. I am interested to learn more about the authors of health-related pages on Wikipedia and what motivations they have for doing so. I am currently contacting the authors of randomly selected articles and I noticed that someone at this address recently edited an article on Pancreatic Cancer. Guild of Copy Editors July 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 45 people who signed up this drive, 31 have copy-edited at least one article. Lfstevens continues to carry most of the weight, having edited 360 articles and over a quarter of a million words already. Thanks to all who have participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, will be available early in August here.

Progress report: We are once again very close to achieving in our primary goal—removing the oldest three months from the backlog. Only 35 such articles remain at press time. The total backlog currently sits at under 2400 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We are just two articles away from completing all requests made before July 2012 (both are in progress).

Relativity

Thanks for the improvements in theory of relativity. Thanks D.H. My goal is to flesh it out over the next month or so, making sure to keep it entry-level and summary-style. I think it could be a good sort of portal to the other articles related to relativity. Most of the structure is already there, it's just a matter of turning it into prose. Hey Rafizah. I appreciate all the hard work you put into Legoland Malaysia. Here are some suggestions:
  • Go easy on the pictures. In an article that size, maybe just one or two, or else it will get crowded.
  • It reads a little like an advertisement. Try writing about Legoland without promoting it. Know what I mean? We want to inform readers, not sell them tickets. Write from a neutral point of view.
  • Remember, everything you write has to be backed-up by reliable sources. Try not to use the Legoland website. Instead, use independent news stories and books.
  • Disneyland is an example of a pretty good article about an amusement park. Try to make Legoland Malaysia as good as that.
Use Talk:Legoland Malaysia if you run into trouble and other editors should be able to help you out. Don't hesitate to write to me if you have any questions or need advice. Have fun. Braincricket (talk) 12:44, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Hey Mark. I reverted that because info was inserted before the reference (Duckworth, 79) which gives the impression that it's supported by Duckworth. Duckworth seems to be backing up the statement that "It is larger than all the town's other parks and playing fields put together", which was removed with your edit. My edit summary was "broke the reference". The thing to do is probably to leave the sentence about combined area with the reference intact, and insert your stuff in a different part of the paragraph – either right before or right after it. That was a really interesting story. I was able to find three references, including a video from the BBC, and I took the liberty of inserting them into the text. Keep up the good work. It sounds to me like June Anne Devaney's was a landmark case in forensics. I wonder if it is notable enough for its own article. Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
  • Participation: Out of 37 people signed up for this drive so far, 19 have copy-edited at least one article, about the same as the last drive. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're almost on track to meet our targets for the drive. Great work, guys. We have reduced our target group of articles—August, September, and October 2011—by about 44%, and the overall backlog has been reduced by 58 articles so far, to around 2600 articles. The biggest difference between this drive and the previous one is a stronger focus on large articles, so total word counts are still comparable.
  • Don't forget about the Copy Edit of the Month contests! Voting for the August contest has been extended through the end of the month. You don't have to make a submission to vote!

Actually I hadn't stopped to read it until just now. Every once in a while I go through Category:J. R. R. Tolkien looking for typos and whatnot. Today I learned that Tom Jung created the posters for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Plan 9, and Lord of the Rings. Some of my favorite movies! I love all those posters but never knew who made them until today. I think you've done a fantastic job with the article. If I can improve it any further, I will. Take it easy.
