A barnstar for you!

The Anti-Vandalism Barnstar
It must be about fifty times for me... Keep it up! 10metreh (talk) 18:32, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, seems that the vandalism "shall not pass" this evening Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:07, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Boston Marathon

Why are you threatening me? Editor "Sonoma's Bridge" created a duplicate section without an appropriate header. There was already a section with multiple refs under "Notable events". I was merely removing the duplicate paragraph. What gives? What is wrong with you people (talk) 19:56, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Also: could you explain why you think a section about a current event belongs in the "History" section? What is wrong with you people (talk) 19:57, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
What you just ran into is somewhat of a drawback in the anti-vandalism system. Warning messages for vandalism are incremental and most tools automatically increase the vandalism level after each warning. Due to this the wording of the vandalism warnings is also different - Level 1 is friendly, while the level 4 you just received is the last level before a block so it is quite.. let us call it direct. Since several other users already gave you a warning the next level was automatically set at 4, hence the "threat".
As for your edit, have a look at the diff. Your edit (re)inserts a piece of vandalism, stating "tambien is a sadfadf". That is what causes it to be reverted as being vandalism, not the actual content change. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:07, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
That isn't what I tried to put in there. Also the article is going to be a mess for the next 24 hours so I'm out. Thanks for taking the time to explain. Hope you and yours are OK. What is wrong with you people (talk) 20:09, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
Aye, that page is likely going to see some major editing for quite a bit. Sorry for the harshness of the warning though - I saw your edits pass by on huggle before and they looked entirely fine. I didn't notice the username on this one though, or i would have given you a manual nudge to mention the left in line instead pressing revert and warn. (Which, i hoped, would have produced a friendly notice instead of the screaming warning). I'll stripe those warnings as invalid though, since its clear that you are actually busy being constructive. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:13, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Excirial. Can you help me to protect T-ara's article? There is high risk vandalism in that article. Like other high profile K-Pop artists that are page protected, so it should be page protected too. If you could grant it, I would to choose semi-protection without days limitation type. Thank you. Regards. — Wihan Tan (talk) at 18:01, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

I am quite reluctant to protect that page since there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of vandalism going on, and besides that there are actually multiple IP and new editors editing constructively - A protection would block those editors as well. If vandalism increases though feel free to report it at WP:RFPP for another look. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:19, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Chloë Hoechsmann

Hi Excirial,

I, and another editor, nominated Chloë Hoechsmann for speedy deletion. The creator removed the speedy deletion tags and then proceeded to undo your edits. Just thought you might like to know.

Sosthenes12 (talk) 19:08, 15 April 2013 (UTC)Sosthenes12

Done Seems to have been deleted in the meantime. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:19, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Hey, what's going on there? You've reverted perfectly legitimate edits...? Sonoma's bridge (talk) 20:02, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

It seems that this is a case of huggle mixup. We both aimed for the IP vandal but it seems you managed to remove the vandalism during the split second between huggle's "Has it already been reverted?" check and the actual revision. In cases where that happens Huggle will revert the last two editors (As seen in the edit summary). Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:25, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Boston Marathon bombing is now a double redirect. Please fix this when you get a chance. --MZMcBride (talk) 18:00, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Oh, the page was moved again? You would think that we should find half a decent title after 5 or so attempts moving it around. Double redirect is fixed though. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 18:04, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

You Proved the Point

Thanks for proving the point about the arbitrary nature of Wikipedia editing. Obviously, if one is to prove that Wikipedia doesn't qualify as an encyclopedia even by Wikipedia's definition, then one would cite Wikipedia. Also, I see no reason why Conservapedia isn't as valid a source as Wikipedia but, of course, the truth about Wikipedia's "verifiability" standards are that they are completely arbitrary.

What you deleted: However, given that Wikipedia depends on self-selected "editors" to write and compile articles, with no preference given for scholars in the fields about which they are writing, Wikipedia may not qualify as a genuine encyclopedia, ironically even by it's own standards. An encyclopedia is supposed to be a collection of articles by "well-educated, well-informed content experts" (above). Theoretically, Wikipedia is supposed to compensate for this weakness by requiring references to reputable secondary sources. But, Wikipedia editors can arbitrarily delete, without collaboration, any entry they can find any of a number of reasons Wikipedia guidelines provide. Even entries posted by scholars in the field, based on peer-reviewed, academic articles, can be deleted by non-experts. Wikipedia, then, only represents the majority view of it's editors.[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.194.30.170 (talk) 18:27, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Actually i anticipated this exact type of response when removing the addition, simply because that modus operandi is extremely common with this type of addition. But to summarize the removal:
  • Conservapedia is tertiary source, which is less preferable then secondary sources.
  • Convervapedia is publicly editable, and as a result not considered reliable.
  • Convervapedia is biased towards an " American conservative and Christian point of view" and thus not neutral.
However, if you are looking for a rather extensive article on the matter Criticism of Wikipedia is the way to go. Besides that the regular Wikipedia article also deals with criticism, though in a somewhat shorter format. Also, you may note that both article's contain plenty of reliable sources to back up what was written. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 18:43, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Kool-Aid

Thanks for helping revert the vandalism going on at Kool-Aid. Seeing as pretty much all the recent edits have been vandalism, why not just semi-protect it? TCN7JM 18:39, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

The level of vandalism really isn't that bad - there are only a couple of edits each week and there seems to be no sustained effort from a single editor. If i were to semi protect it for a week that would only prevent an estimate 4 vandalism edits while at the same time blocking every new editors ability to edit the page during the same time span. In these cases it is simpler - and more effective - to remove the vandalism manually. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 19:00, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Shayan Italia - Wikipedia

With reference to your contesting the deletion of Article for Shayan Italia, yes I am deleting it. I created this but it seems the data within it isn't accurate and I've tried to source things online but always come to a dead end. I think it would be better when Mr Italia's project starts, that this article be then placed online in a more credible format. So kindly please let it be deleted.

This is for article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shayan_italia

Thank you MusicEditor123 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Musiceditor123 (talkcontribs) 19:34, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Removing all content and references and afterwards marking the page] as CSD A7 is a definite no-go since this is considered to be a mix between gaming the system and vandalism. You are free to mark it with a PROD or an AFD template to suggest it being removed though, but there is no guarantee that the article will be removed. Socking?

Hi Excirial,

I am suspicious of two users that have similar editing habits. One is User:Maxypaxywaxy and User:Bdog6152. They both recently created hoax pages that referred to each other and they both vandalized the same page within a short period of time of each other. I see you have dealth with them recently and wanted to see what you thought. And by the way, Maxy replied to your message on his own talk page in a negative way. Thanks.

Sosthenes12 (talk) 20:25, 15 April 2013 (UTC)Sosthenes12

I think there is a very fitting template for this case:  Sounds like a duck quacking into a megaphone to me. So yes, entirely agree with your assessment. Bdog6152 actually created a previous copy of Maxypaxywaxy user page as well, so this is a really obvious case of socking. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:32, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
Hi Excirial,
Thanks for the help! And I was wondering what I have to do to qualify for rollback privileges. I am relatively new to Wikipedia but I am getting tired of finding vandalism, reverting it, then checking the user's contributions to see what else they did, going to each page they edited to check what they did only to find more vandalism and reverting it one by one or finding that they have already been reverted by someone else. It is a bit inefficient.
Sosthenes12 (talk) 20:54, 15 April 2013 (UTC)Sosthenes12
Rollback itself can be requested at WP:PERM/R and is actually one of the permissions that is fairly easy to obtain. To obtain it a user must show they understand what vandalism is, so to ensure that rollback isn't misused when obtained. In most cases twinkle is quite a handy tool for this since it is capable of "emulated" rollback - it can rollback revision though it is slower then "true" tollback. After some (sustained) good quality vandalism patrol you should have no problems receiving the permission once requested. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 18:52, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Excirial,

I just requested permission for rollback. What do I do now? Thanks for the help!

Sosthenes12 (talk) 21:11, 17 April 2013 (UTC)Sosthenes12

Hiyas there LEWhitfield,

I just noticed that you made this edit and i was wondering - what issue are you running into? Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 19:56, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I've got students learning to edit (and I'm still learning myself), and we've had this problem a couple of times. After they create a header, the text below goes into a dotted-line box - but runs off the right side of the page. I don't know what's causing it, but when it happens to them I clear it by replacing the text immediately after the header, without the space betwen. So it seems like there's another bit of code there that I can't see. Any tips?
Also, your message brings up another question: I suggested that they try out their article editing in their sandboxes, where no one else would see them (or so I thought!) - so how did you happen to see this? Thanks! LEWhitfield (talk) 20:07, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
Ah, a few questions. Lets start with the original problem first!
The "Dotted box" is caused by having a line in the text that starts with a space. For example, say i wanted to write "I am Excirial", but instead wrote " I am Excirial". The first version would do what you would expect it to do, but the second version would product the dotted box. I'll add an example after the rest of the text - adding it right here would cause the reply to be difficult to read.
As for noticing the edit: Technically speaking any edit one makes can be seen by anyone regardless of the page where it was made. However, if you are busy editing a user page or sandbox this decreases the chance someone notices or cares by an order of magnitude (You won't run into new page patrol for example, and actions such as blanking a page won't immediately be seen as suspicious). In my case i was out patrolling for vandalism using a tool called Huggle, which effectively shows the patrol any edit that was made, in order to check it for vandalism. That was when i noticed the question, and figured you might like a hand.
On a very different subject - i notice you mentioned students? In that case you may or may not be interested in the Wikipedia Education Outreach Program. Shortly put this is a program by the Wikimedia foundation aimed to help professors and teachers who wish to edit wikipedia as a class project - you might find it interesting to have a look at. Besides that it may be handy to know that there is a helpdesk here on Wikipedia which exists to help editors who run into issues while editing. There is also the Teahouse which serves more or less has the same purpose, though it focuses on more on helping newer editors, whereas the helpdesk is visited by editors of virtually any lever of experience (Leading to a very neat mix of complex and simple questions). If you run into an issue such as the "dotted box" again just drop a note there - most times other editors are glad to give a hand when needed. In either case it it a little more foolproof method to find an answer since you aren't likely to run into an editor who happens to be patrolling around at the time. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:28, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks very much - I'm glad you happened on me! I have just recently added this component (uploading short papers on art topics that are currently stubs) to an art history information tech class. We pack a lot of software skills into a semester, and this is only our second semester doing the Wikipedia article, so I haven't yet spent enough time on this part to do it right. I'm learning.. thanks to folks like you. I've gotten more out of direct conversations like this than out of the Wikipedia editing pages; there are so many of them it's a bit overwhelming. I will definitely check out the Ed. Outreach Program. Thanks for your help, and the tips, and your patience. I feel like a noob on Wikipedia - which I don't mind, but I don't want to teach my students poorly.
By the way, should I have also posted this message on your page? So...to do that I would just click on your name, go to your talk page and edit? LEWhitfield (talk) 22:01, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
To be fair there is really no set "One must reply like this" method and most people have their own "reply preference", Even so the most convenient default method is leaving a message on the other users talk page since this will cause the orange "You have a new message!" bar to appear for them. Thanks to that bar it is easy to see if someone responded, without having to traverse half the encyclopedia to find people one send a message in the past few months.
As for posting messages there you are entirely right. Clicking a username, navigating to the talk page and then editing it (Or clicking "New Section") is the way to go. Some users signatures (Mine included) may have a direct link to their talk you can use as well. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 17:58, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

I added information about Dolphins owner Steven Ross and upcoming referenda

Dear Sir,

My edit was factual in that our clueless local government, after giving away the farm to a local sports team a few years back - causing the largest mayoral municipal recall election in national history - is now seeking to give away the pigs, goats and chickens from our farm as well. The gentleman who requested this windfall is a multi-billionaire Steven M. Ross, Miami Dolphins owner. In fact, Mr. Ross has not once appeared in public on this matter, and lives in an entirely other state full time.

It would be well to restore the post, even if you do not think the epitaph of "What a d-bag" is in order. Describing our local government as clueless is little in dispute by their actions. Yours, Grant Stern http://www.twitter.com/grantstern — Preceding unsigned comment added by 8.24.181.184 (talk) 12:11, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia which purpose is to provide neutral and reliable sourced information to its readers. Adding personal opinions and unsourced negative content - especially concerning biographies of living persons - is simply a no-go in any form or shape. If there are multiple reliable sourced backing this criticism it might be another story. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 18:02, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Dear Excirial,

I have read your message and understand your confusion, however if you were to read Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony, page 119 you will see that I am indeed correct.

No inch dimensions for Morse tapers

Why is the whole article written in inches but MT is in mm? Seems kind of retarded to make the user do the conversions themselves. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.36.188.134 (talk) 19:01, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Only a moron would mix measurements. It is obvious that you know nothing about metal working or you wouldn't have made this idiotic mistake so why did you write this article. Probably would be a good idea to leave this kind of thing to professionals or adults.
Your right, My knowledge on metal working is around the novice level but perhaps that might be the reason why i didn't write the article. This may equally be the reason why one of my main activities on Wikipedia is patrolling for vandalism, an activity where one removes non helpful additions such as "I am presenting the MT chart in MM just to confuse you because I'm a retard." from an article when these are spotted.
However, if you believe that the article should include both measurements - something i can quite agree on - please feel free to fix it. There is actually a very convenient {{Convert}} template one can use for this. Simply add the original measurement to the template, define the unit it should convert to and add it to the article. It will then display both the original and converted value for you, so one can use both metrics as desired. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 19:15, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

IP Address

HI Excirial,

How do you deal with people using a bare IP address to vandalize pages? The IP address ‎199.176.226.1 seems to have a long history of vandalism and has been blocked before. After the block was lifted the IP address is still used to vandalize pages. The last edits by this IP address was on Military Wives. Thanks!

Sosthenes12 (talk) 17:53, 19 April 2013 (UTC)Sosthenes12

The trouble is that quite a few IP ranges are dynamic, which means that every session a new IP address is assigned to a user. The person behind ‎199.176.226.1 today may be someone else tomorrow, and another person the next day. Due to this we have a situation where little can be done except going trough the entire "Warn and eventually block" cycle again (Unless the IP is a static adres, in which case a longer block won't likely target the innocents.
There are some exceptions to this general rule though. IP addresses belonging to schools are often blocked for extended periods (Up to a year at once), IP ranges may be blocked entirely if a sub block persistently vandalizes, Long term vandals may attract long term block on their IP or range and all open proxies are hardblocked on discovery. But as for little fries such as this one - unless they produce hefty amounts of vandalism consistently we just play whack-a-mole with them. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs)

Thanks for the information. It helps. By the way, I requested permission to become a reviewer and I was wondering if you could possibly approve me. If you don't feel comfortable doing so, that's no problem. Thanks for your help.

Entry for OPIS

Hi!

You declined my latest edit for OPIS. I have been trying to get an short informative piece on OPIS up for a while. OPIS' competitors (Platts, Petroleum Argus) are all listed and I felt that having a similar entry for a trusted service would be good for Wiki users.

Do you have any specific recommendations on how I can change the article to meet your editorial guidelines?

Thank you for your note. I redone my comment and I hope this time I managed a better job. Bbeehvh 18:02, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Much better indeed. "XYZ was a Nazi" is often a vandalism modus operandi, so without a source it would have been quite prone to removal at a later date. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 17:47, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Recent Changes

Hi Excirial,

I've been monitoring the recent changes for possible vandalism list and I noticed you often find and change them rather quickly. I was wondering if there was a special program or permission you are using or are you just quick to react?

Thanks, Sosthenes12 (talk) 18:36, 22 April 2013 (UTC)Sosthenes12

The tool i use myself is Huggle, which can be is as an application that allows a user to navigate diffs at high speed due to preloading several them. Besides this it automates a lot of the work trough single-button press reverts and warnings (And, with admin rights, single click blocking). I don't have any numbers to support this, but i am quite certain it is the most used vandalism patrol tools there days. Another fairly often used tool is STiki, which has a similar setup. The main difference between them is that Huggle shows a user real-time edits, while STiki shows cached (old) edits that are ranked as suspicious, yet haven't been reverted. You can find a trustfull information on this two pages www.frd.al or in facebook page https://www.facebook.com/FRDemokratike

Please it is really important for our party to remove that content.

Backup drive

Dear Excirial: I would like to take part in the backup drive taking place in a few days. I clicked on the backup drive tab, and was directed to your AfcBuddy page to sign up. However, I couldn't see anything about the July drive. Is this because I have to wait until July 1 to sign up? And by the way, thanks for making the AfcBuddy. I tried to list my own last time and it wasn't worth the time it took. —Anne Delong (talk) 15:30, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

The lack of a header for the new drive was mostly caused by me not being aware there would be a new drive (The last two months i haven't exactly been the shining example of active editing). The header is up and ready for sign-ups now though. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 07:14, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Hello Excirial - I was just notified that my recent edit to Up with People seemed less than neutral to you, so you removed it for now. I'm hoping you can provide me insight as to why you felt it less than neutral.

This is the information I edited: History:

Up with People was founded by J. Blanton Belk in 1965 as a positive voice for young people during a turbulent period in the United States. Its historic path officially began in 1968 when it was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) international, educational non-profit entity. Over the years: • More than 22,000 young men and women from more than 80 countries have come together to travel in 180 casts to deliver a common message of hope and goodwill to people around the world, and pursue their own global education and personal growth goals through service, music and travel. • UWP has visited more than 4,000 communities in 42 countries; • Over 3 million hours of community service have been performed by UWP students; • 500,000 host families around the world have welcomed UWP students into their homes, and • An estimated 22 million people worldwide have been directly impacted by UWP.

Thanks in advance for your reply. 50.198.202.217 (talk) 20:25, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

The above section reads like a marketing campaign add. For example: as a positive voice for young people and a common message of hope and goodwill to people around the world are positively biassed. If you read the addition as a whole it is simply a list of accomplishments by the organisation, which is inherently promotional. Another issue is that the text is almost directly copied from this page which constitutes a copyright violation (And explains the positive bias). @Buffbills7701: Yep, i noticed that issue as well and it should be fixed for the next run. AFCBuddy retains two list of users: One of all the AFC participants (For the leaderboard and the user totals list) and another list for user who signed up for AFCBuddy (For the user edits list). For test purposes i initially set it to generate everything for everyone, but i managed to forget to change that back later on, causing it to happily upload everything for everyone just as i requested it would do. Precisely, I forgot to do so, and now all of the reviews I have marked as checked are gone. Can somebody just help to copy and paste. For me the action is a bit cumbersome as I contribute on an iPad. Cheers, ☯ Bonkers The Clown \(^_^)/ Nonsensical Babble ☯ 01:50, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
@Bonkers The Clown: and @Arctic Kangaroo:. The reviewed reviews section is actually something AFCBuddy generates itself in order to maintain reviewed reviews (Rather then overwriting everything every run). The problem is that everyone seems to use a different notation of a pass or fail, rather then using "- [Pass|Fail] --" as mentioned on the review page. I see single dashes, double dashes, everything pasted together, all caps, no caps, no second dashes, variations that contain a longer variety of the - that has a different charcode (Gah!). I think ill simply rewrite that check to "{{diff|" + (Something) + "}}" + "[RegularDash|LongerDash]" + [Fail|Pass]. and hope that ends up being more accurate than the current incarnation. As for the reviewed reviews: I'll give you a hand once i'm not supposed to be at work. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 06:20, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
And done. Seems the above method works like a charm for finding comments. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 07:43, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

The current G1 deletion criteria indeed does not apply - these days the page would likely be tagged as Not for things made up in one day or as an in-universe description of a non notable entry; Or even as a hoax article, since the article described the animal as a real-living animal as opposed to a hypothetical entry published in a book. What i am more curious about though; How did you even manage to find that article and figure out i tagged it? It was originally tagged and deleted in May 2008. Ametherm

Hi Excirial,

We are already in "external links" as ametherm. I am the application engineer at Ametherm. We will be perfect references in inrush current as we manufacture and provide technical assistance in power thermistors that are used for inrush limiting. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ametherm (talkcontribs) 21:50, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

The current link to the FAQ section is already stretching the External Links Policy to its limits (Since it is a long list: Point 4 and 14 apply). Why do those apply? As a company dealing with the subject matter of the article there is an inherent interest to drive people to your own website. Eg: If i open the page i am immediately staring at a box telling me "Call Us: 800-808-2434 OR Get Samples". Had the article been in better shape the supplied link would have had a hard time being accepted as a reliable source but as for the moment a source is better then no source (Especially since the FAQ doesn't read as a sales brochure). Having said that: A link to the main Ametherm page is a definite no-go for the same reasons as mentioned above.
On an entirely different subject: Since you mentioned you work for Ametherm and the account is named Ametherm i will have to point you to use Username Policy. Accounts named after companies are not permitted due to impersonation, shared use and promotion concerns. Normally it is more or less customary to block these accounts but for the moment i'll point you to the username change request page instead. Along with a very strong suggestion to read or at least skim over WP:BFAQ and WP:COI. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 22:08, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

I was writing to inquire on the status of the "resubmission" of the Amos Soma Fuller page which was denied in 2012. The information has been updated and is all "verifiable." Hopefully, the page will receive an "approved" status and we can move forward by adding this author/public figure.

DrillDance entry

I submitted information for an entry on DrillDance. You correctly stated in your editorial summary that a lot of the information contained therein is similar to the entry for Marching Girls. The sport of Marching Girls (in Australia) no longer exists and has been renamed DrillDance. Perhaps the pages can be merged but the DrillDance Australia Board (of which I am a Director) would like the heading to be DrillDance to ensure information is up to date. Thank you.

@KarenZob:. Article's tend to be located at the most common name for a subject. For example, the article about Tortoises is located at "Tortoise", while the less common name "Testudinidae" redirects a user to this page if they search that page name. The "most common" name is often a gray area and may actually vary across different countries (Ironically "Gray" and "Grey" is another example of such as article). For most part the title is of little concern though - Drill Dance could be redirected to point a user to "Marching Girls", or the "Marching Girls" page could be Moved to a new title, leaving "Marching Girls" to redirect to that new page. As long as the page explains that both words refer to the same subject any title should be fine. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 17:41, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

October AfC backlog drive

Hi there! Just checking in from the AfC Wikiproject. We're starting another backlog drive in October, and I wanted to check with you about AfCBuddy. You said on the signup page that signups moved to the backlog drive page. Will AfCBuddy generate the diff list for everybody who signs up? Thanks, theonesean 19:46, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

@Theonesean: Yes, entirely correct. I would have to update a few AFCBuddy settings for the October drive (And actually start it periodically), but afterward it will automatically load the participants section on the drive page and determine who signed up for the drive and who wants their statistics generated. Its more or less the same as the "Old" Afcbuddy signup, except that this one is completely automated. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 17:50, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Hello

My name is Marcin Trybulec, i am grandson of Anrzej Trybulec who passed away today. I do not have any certificate of death yet, but since he was famous mathematician in poland would you put it there so people who will look for him will know.

Thank you Marcin

Hello Marcin,
Let me just start of by offering my condolences for the loss. I undid your edit to the page due to the page being classified as a so-called BLP Page, or a "Biography of a living person" (A rather unfortunate policy name under these circumstances). The BLP policy itself is a rather long read, but it effectively boils down to "Biographies are sensitive pages, and therefor any content added to these pages must be reliably sourced or removed".
Since Wikipedia is freely editable by anyone it is easy to add possibly incorrect information to an article. Since this information result in a backlash towards the article's subject (especially if an article concerns a person) any content added to it must be sourced reliably, irregardless of whether or not the information is actually true. This means that, in order to add a death date, some reliable source must be stated to back this claim up. This can be somewhat tedious, but unfortunately attempts to change an actually living persons article to state he or she is dead happen all the often - resulting in this hard-line stance. The name "Marvin Robert aka Child Abuser" alone is enough to quality as "Dubious, unsourced content". Simply said:
  • Limit the list to players who have a stand-alone Wikipedia page.
  • Provide a reliable source to back up added players, especially if they have a rather dubious nickname such as "Child Abuser".

Putting AFCBuddy on autopilot or sharing the ability to run it

I see you've not been editing for a few days.

Any chance you could either get AFCBuddy put on autopilot or share the keys to the ignition switch with a couple of other people so it could be run at least daily?

If not for this drive, perhaps for the next one? davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 01:07, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. Now I can do some more re-reviews. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 20:52, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
I suppose i should write a quick FAQ about AFCBuddy and its lack of updates, if only to explain why the update take so long at times.
Can AFCBuddy run on autopilot?
Unlike a few drives ago where AFCBuddy generated a bunch of text files that required manual upload virtually every part of AFCBuddy is automated these days. All that needs to be entered these days is my account login, what user accounts that need to be checked, what period to check, and once it is finished it asks if the result should be uploaded (Period and accounts are loaded from settings / Wikipedia on default and can mostly be entered trough). So yes, AFCBuddy can and already does run on near autopilot.
If it can run near automatically, why doesn't it run daily or at least more often?
Multiple reasons, the primary reason being the large amount of changes made to AFCBuddy right before the drive. The amount of changes combined with the lack of extensive testing and the nature of the edits we are dealing with (User edits as opposed to static-format machine edits) results in a situation where i don't automatically trust the end result that is generated. To ensure we don't end up with drive results that are horribly off once the drive is over i double check the result manually - though unfortunately even a cursory check consumes a rather sizable chunk of time. Once this version has run a while the errors should be iron though out and thus we can likely resume the previous "Run nearly automatically" mode during the next drive.
A secondary reason is that AFCBuddy requires a user to login into the program (And administrative rights are needed to fetch the deleted edits / score people for deleted copyvio's). While it is technically possible to save a username and password and use these to start AFCBuddy automatically i won't do this due to basic account security concerns. So if i am away from my own system a couple o days the stats will also be a bit older then i'd like them to be.
Can the ignition switch be shared between multiple people?
AFCBuddy needs (Wikipedia) administrative rights in order to load deleted edits - if a user without these rights runs AFCBuddy the generated output will lack any deleted edits and thus the total score will be inaccurate. Now that i think of it i am fairly certain the lack of administrative right would cause an error since the "1 extra point for a copyvio" code wasn't written to account for this. Separate from this issue the code needs a good cleanup before i would even consider publishing it so for the forseeable future this is a no-can-no. Thanks for the FAQ and the quick code fix listed below. For the next drive (and perhaps for the rest of this one?) if you plan on being away for more than 3-4 days at a stretch, perhaps another experienced AFC editor who has admin rights can be given the code so he can run it. If not for this drive, then maybe for a different drive.
The "important" things to update are the lists of reviewed articles which have not been deleted - that's what is needed for non-admins to do re-reviews (in the rare cases where a review of a deleted file needs a re-review, obviously only admins can do that properly: ACCEPT + DELETED does not necessarily mean BAD REVIEW, and DECLINE + DELETED doesn't necessarily mean the review is a good one). A subset of your tool could generate this report daily from a non-admin bot account. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 23:52, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
I suppose the other solution is to get an adminbot on the case; Whether the people over at WP:BOTRFA like that is another question... --Mdann52talk to me! 07:19, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

About Pandit Jayanta Bose's page on Wikipedia ----- I want it to alive and well!!

Dear Wiki Friend/Guide, I put the first content about Pandit Jayanta Bose. I know him personally and about his works. When I first posted for review I got a reply saying all the links and citations could not be verified or something of a similar nature. Most of his work reviews were in Indian news papers back in 80's and early 90s and is not available online. I have managed to get xerox copies of some of those. I can put those in the body... which makes the page look unprofessional. What can I do to get it posted on Wikipedia. Please help and suggest!! Thanks for you support. Sincerely -Aniruddha Kundu ani_kundu@yahoo.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.203.213.48 (talk) 09:52, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

Can you take a look at this again? The creator appears never to have been notified of the status of the draft, which headed for deletion. It appears to be a notable school. Bearian (talk) 16:43, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

Olav Skille owns the copyright and he gave permission to post it... Linuxtroll (talk) 16:11, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

I think that User:Peridon managed to explain the situation rather well in this revision. Due to the nature of Wikipedia and Copyright only texts licensed as CC-BY-SA or compatible can be used directly in Wikipedia. Due to Wikipedia's freely editable nature any "Right Reserved" content is virtually always incompatible with Wikipedia. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 19:06, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

Question about denial of Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) page

Hi there,

In your note on why you denied publication of the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) wikipedia post, you mentioned that not enough was said about the notability of the designation. I would like to ask for your advice on how to remedy that issue.

The CIP page was actually intended as a companion page to the Insurance Institute of Canada wikipedia entry. The Insurance Institute is the education arm of the property and casualty insurance industry of Canada. The significance of the CIP designation in insurance is akin to the significance of the CA or CPA designations of chartered ccountants in Canada.

I am wondering if, instead of uploading the CIP designation as a separate wikipedia entry, I should have included it as a section within the Insurance Institute of Canada wikipedia entry. The notability of the Insurance Institute of Canada is not in question among insurance industry professionals in Canada. Its notability is precisely because of the CIP and Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) designations it offers.

By moving the CIP designation to the existing Insurance Institute of Canada page, that might better establish the notability of the designation.

Please give me your thoughts,

Douglas Walter OCT 2013

I understand your interest in keeping wikipedia neutral, however I feel as though deleting all of my contributions was a but heavy handed. I did include citations for the majority of the new information I added to the Douglas Walter page. I admit I may not have cited a source for every single sentence. I will reinstate my solidly cited information in the mean time, and keep in mind the neutrality of the statements, discarding those which cannot be verified with exactitude. Thanks. User:Ryukin

What you're seeing here is both a strength and a weakness of the rollback tool. Once used the rollback tool will revert a page to the last known version that was not edited by the editor being reverted. Eg: If I an edit followed by 10 edits from another single user, a rollback will revert the article to the version I originally wrote. In many cases this is desirable, since a revert is usually used to counter vandalism (And thus you really don't want to revert just the latest edit).
A problem, however, is that the consequence of a rollback isn't always entirely obvious in the commonly used anti-vandalism tool huggle. The edit visible on my screen was this one, which added a non neutral line. The previous good edits on the other hand weren't visible and thus I didn't notice that the rollback had more of a consequence then intended. AFCBuddy

Hello Excirial: I've signed on for the upcoming December-January AfC drive here, and have tick-marked the "AFCBuddy enabled" option. Is there anything else that needs to be performed on my part to enable AFCBuddy to tally my reviews when I use the AfC helper script, or do you handle the enabling of AfC Buddy? (talk page stalker) Nope, all done :) --Mdann52talk to me! 13:16, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Dear Excirial, thanks for your effort to keep our encyclopedia. My contribution is oriented to keep alive the image of some old popular heroes, like baseball players and musicians, several of them were born at the Third World. I am backing to work, after a silence time. I hope keep concentrate in my goals with Wikipedia, respecting all rules and normatives. Cipralex

I made no changes to the Cipralex page. Wrong person, sorry. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.171.102.217 (talk) 15:14, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

IP Addresses - such as the one you are using - are often dynamically assigned by your ISP. Simply put it is likely that by tomorrow you will receive a new IP address, whereas the one you are currently using is assigned to another ISP customer. Since Wikipedia identifies anonymous editors based on IP address any edits are logged based on IP address. If another editor made edits in the past using this IP address (And subsequently got warned for those) you will see these warnings as well. My edit to Juche article

You undid a recent edit of mine to the Juche article. I think this must have been a mistake. I explained my edit clearly in the description, I changed the title of a heading to accurately reflect BR Myers criticism of Juche ideology, previously the heading did not match either his criticism or what was actually in the section. I will reinstate my change, it reflects what is in the book the criticism derives from (The Cleanest Race) in the terms actually used in that book (i.e. that Juche ideology is a "sham").--146.90.217.116 (talk) 20:28, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

I can only say that i agree with you - having looked at the edit a second time there is really nothing wrong with it (It even uses an edit summary to explain the edit to boot). Apologies for the revert, clearly a false positive from my side. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:40, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Your edits to Ford Mustang

Original edit - merged with a note placed on my talk page
Information icon Hello, I'm Excirial. I wanted to let you know that I undid one of your recent contributions, such as the one you made with this edit to Ford Mustang, because it didn’t appear constructive to me. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 19:46, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

I reverted Excirial's obvious mistake. --NeilN talk to me 19:49, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks... We probably just hit revert very close to each other ... no big deal.  :) Wikipelli Talk 19:50, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
Hi... I think we stepped on each other reverting vandalism on Ford Mustang a little bit ago. Mind if I remove the warning?  :) Wikipelli Talk 19:55, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
I'm actually somewhat tempted to say that i would really, really mind if the warning was removed now . Joking aside feel free to remove it - even if it actually had been a correct there is no rule against removing them from a talk page. I've striped it just in case, but by all means remove it entirely if you wish to do so. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:05, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
