Can someone take a look at Ctenophore?

I just finished a translation of this article from the featured article at the German Wikipedia (Rippenquallen). But it really needs some expert attention, to make sure that I got scientific terms like "cilia", "systematics", "phylegeny" etc. in the right places. I hope that nothing's actually blatantly inaccurate, but there may be cases where I selected an ill-fitting translation of a German word. If it was to ever become a featured article here (and, despite knowing nothing about marine biology, I found the German article very interesting), it would also need some inline citations - I don't have easy access to the literature, but maybe the Wikipedians here do. --Sam Blanning(talk) 17:25, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Help with vendace

While working on Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/fr, I found out that the name "vendace" refers to at least two different species in the genus Coregonus: C. albula and C. vandesius. Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Limidae species

Unidentified Limidae species

Having trouble identifying this limidae species. I took this picture in Sulawesi, Indonesia. This fellow was almost a meter wide and it had electric sparks flashing on its mantle. A google search for "electric fire clam" provides video footage of the electric sparks. Would appreciate if anyone could help with the identity. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Marine life, or just Marine animals?

Looking through the project page, it seems to me that your focus is on marine animals, rather than all marine life. In doing so, you're missing out on several ecologically important groups, such as the brown algae, the diatoms, the foraminiferans, and the dinoflagellates. Am I correct in my assumption? Coral reef

I was surprised to find that the coral reef article did not have a Marine life banner (or any other). I wouldn't expect an oversight on such a big topic, so, after I added it, I wondered if my assumption was in error. Coral reef should be linked with Wikiproject Marine life, right? Greenspun illustration project: requests now open

Dear Wikimedians,

This is a (belated) announcement that requests are now being taken for illustrations to be created for the Philip Greenspun illustration project (PGIP).

The aim of the project is to create and improve illustrations on Wikimedia projects. You can help by identifying which important articles or concepts are missing illustrations (diagrams) that could make them a lot easier to understand. Requests should be made on this page: Philip_Greenspun_illustration_project/Requests

If there's a topic area you know a lot about or are involved with as a Wikiproject, why not conduct a review to see which illustrations are missing and needed for that topic? Existing content can be checked by using Mayflower to search Wikimedia Commons, or use the Free Image Search Tool to quickly check for images of a given topic in other-language projects.

The community suggestions will be used to shape the final list, which will be finalised to 50 specific requests for Round 1, due to start in January. People will be able to make suggestions for the duration of the project, not just in the lead-up to Round 1.

Obscure taxonomic problem

Hi, can some bachiopod fan take a look at the source of List_of_brachiopod_genera#B?

Basically, the matter is thus:

  • The frog genus-group taxon is the oldest... it seems (see next point). Author is Thompson, 1912. This is verified by Nomenclator and has been re-verified by Matsui in Current Herpetology Vol. 21, No. 1 in 2002.
  • The "Boucek 1993" taxon refers to a Chalcid wasp genus. This is supported by Nomenclator and the NHM chalcidid database. PAleoDB disagrees, but it is not at all a reliable source (even though Nomenclator and the NHM DB have errors too, PaleoDB is full of them)
  • I cannot find a source for the supposed brachiopod genus name except what Google Scholar spits out. Which is just 2 publications. Google Books suggests that Trias und Jura des Ostbalkans refers to the chalk rocks of Babina Stena in Bulgaria, which would fit the "Eastern Balkans" title, BUT if a brachiopod genus was described from there it might of course be named after the place. The other Scholar hit ("SD Ma The Geological Survey of India") obviously refers to Babina in India, which might also have been the source of a genus though I think not, see here.

So either there is a brachiopod genus named after Babina Stena in Bulgaria by Bernd in 1934 (possibly - the general theme of Mesozoic chalk rocks fits), or after Babina in India by ?Ma? in 1930 (very very maybe).

Or the supposed "brachiopod" genus Babina is nonexistent, based on the sloppiness of PaleoDB. I am beginning to suspect the latter but am not sure. Where does the brachiopod genus list come from? And can anyone check out the 1934 book... if that's possible... (it is fairly well-available in Germany but it's very rare even in Austrian and Swiss public libraries) Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 02:04, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Algae & Seaweed

I'm working on a series of articles on edible seaweed species, which are algae and may or may not fall under the scope of wikiproject plants. These articles (and existing algae articles, like porphyra) seem like they would fall under the scope of WikiProject Marine life, but I didn't see anything on these pages about them. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

New WikiProject proposal: Biota of the UK and Ireland

I've proposed a new WikiProject named WikiProject Biota of the UK and Ireland which would encompass all species and conservation efforts within Britain, an extremely interesting area. The project would include vegetation classification, Category:Lists of British animals, Category:Conservation in the United Kingdom, Category:Ecology of the British Isles, Category:Forests and woodlands of the United Kingdom, Category:Fauna of the British Isles and anything else to do with the flora and fauna of Britain. Hi Martin,
That's great news! :) I went on an enthusiastic spree roughly a year ago, making articles for most taxa of the Chlorophyta and Charophyta (the green algae) at genus-level and higher, but undoubtedly I missed some and new taxa have been added in the meanwhile. You might also consider developing a bot to improve those earlier articles with a fuller description, images, more links to literature and databases, etc. I did the best I could, but I'm no expert and they were pretty rudimentary. PS. I made a few templates and categories to help with the work, which you might consider? I made separate categories for each of the (major) taxonomic levels of algae: Category:Algae taxonomic classes, Category:Algae taxonomic orders, Category:Algae taxonomic families, and [[Category:Algae genera. Orphan tags on species stubs

Discussion and note here. I think this would be a similar problem with species stubs for this project area, because of the large number of mollusc stubs taht I see, again with the huge numbers of species, and the tag overpowering the brief article itself, and no useful information about how to wikilink the stub that would be actually useful to the reader outside of its genus page. --KP Botany (talk) 04:19, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Slingjaw wrasse

I just added a stub for the slingjaw wrasse, Epibulus_insidiator, but I don't know enough (either about this species or proper wiki coding) to make it better. It does, however, have a kickass vid from the Wainwright lab of feeding. Check the lab's youtube channel and you'll find more vids of feeding that might be useful. From Polychaete: "A recently discovered genus Osedax includes the Bone-eating snot flower."

Expert opinion needed

Background:' The following articles contain empty tables of prehistoric genus of varying types of creatures. A bot has been written by me that can fill them in using data from paleodb.org and Sepkoski. The task is currently stalled due to some concern about my own lack of expert knowledge on the subject.

Needed: I need someone eith "expert" knowledge (defined as a passion for the subject matter & the ability to easily spot blatant errors) to review the potential bot output of any one of the following articles of his or her choosing:

Sample page: A sample page is available for viewing here. This is provided to give you an idea about what the output will look like, but shouldn't be viewed as a final product as it (currently) includes at least one error that will be corrected shortly.

What I want: Basically, I want someone to look over an entire table (of their choice) and say either "I don't see any obvious errors" or "there are a few errors such as X,Y,Z." I will then figure out the cause of the errors (if any), fix the code, and re-run to make sure the errors are gone.

Reward: Wikipedia gets a lot of valuable science content. I get this stalled project off my to-do list. You get a "warm fuzzy" for helping improve Wikipedia in a significant way, my gratitude, and a token of my appreciation.

WikiProject Algae

WikiProject Algae was started as a meeting space on Wikipedia for improving the taxonomic representations of the groups of organisms called algae. Please join other editors at the talk page (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Algae) to discuss a higher level taxonomy for algae to be used on Wikipedia.

The taxonomies used on Wikipedia algae articles are a mixture of ancient to modern random phyla/classes that are often inconsistent from one article to the next (and sometimes within the same sentence of an article). Editors have adopted hypothesized taxonomies from single articles in the literature, taxonomies that have been out of favor for over 100 years, and some taxoboxes use taxonomies from two different sources.

I think that a taxonomy that is supported in tertiary sources (textbooks), with added insight from the technical literature (review articles, well-cited research), could create some order to allow editors with a wide range of knowledge to edit these articles. Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Marine life articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Citation templates now support more identifiers

Recent changes were made to citations templates (such as {{citation}}, {{cite journal}}, {{cite web}}...). In addition to what was previously supported (bibcode, doi, jstor, isbn, ...), templates now support arXiv, ASIN, JFM, LCCN, MR, OL, OSTI, RFC, SSRN and Zbl. Before, you needed to place |id={{arxiv|0123.4567}} (or worse |url=http://arxiv.org/abs/0123.4567), now you can simply use |arxiv=0123.4567, likewise for |id={{JSTOR|0123456789}} and |url=http://www.jstor.org/stable/0123456789 → |jstor=0123456789.

The full list of supported identifiers is given here (with dummy values):

Request for Comment: Capitalization of common names of animal species

New user

I am finding my way into Wikipedia and have been recommended by an editor to introduce myself on this talk page. I am a semi-retired marine biologist who has researched crown-of-thorns starfish, giant clams, pearl oysters and aquaculture, and published books on each of these. I may contribute substantial editing to each of these entries in Wikipedia and perhaps on some other tropical marine biology topics. In fact, I have successlully done some editing of 'Crown-of-thorns starfish'. However, it is a deterrent to consider adding substantial text or even a new topic that one has spent a considerable period preparing and then find it unacceptable. Is there a way to present and discuss proposed substantial editing and why it is proposed? why crabs walk sideways

I think that crabs walk sideways because they feed on detrius which they feel for with their feet. Most of what they eat is scavanged off the sea floor which they taste with their feet. The reason they walk sideways has got to be to maximise their chances of finding food. i had this idea when i saw a report about robot scientists who were trying to clear mine fields. they discovered that using an eight legged robot that walked sideways they were able to search for mines under the surface of a field without missing one. In order to prove this theory someone should look at some crab footprints. If i am right they should be a series of dots equi-distant from eachother with no big gaps or holes. I believe there are crabs which dont walk sideways so i predict that these are species which dont scavange. The simplicity of this answer is what attracts me to it and makes me think it must be true. are jellyfish the cure to a bad nervous system?

My name is Bobby Knowles. And i reckon that i know the answer to cure a bad nervous system. So basically i reckon that the answer is a jellyfish. This is because jellyfish do not have a nervous system. Also i thought that you could use an injection to get a sample from the jellyfish and basically you could then insert the injection into a monkey because they are our closest relatives. And basically it could be different parts of the jellyfish that you might need to cure a bad nervous system.

Student groups editing marine articles

This is a notification that what appears to be two student groups have started editing articles on marine life: EcoWikiGroup13 (talk · contribs) at Oncorhynchus, and Group9ecology (talk · contribs) at Coccolithophore. Their instructor doesn't seem to have notified anyone at Wikipedia that this would be happening, and so far the first group, EcoWikiGroup13, have been non responsive at attempts to communicate with them. The edits so far seem fairly competent and Copyscape doesn't detect plagiarism. Sea bamboo

Hi, Sea bamboo currently goes to Ecklonia maxima, a species of kelp, but, per the old discussion here, the thing most commonly referred to as "sea bamboo" appears to be a type of coral. I'm not sure how best to fix this -- whether the existing target of "sea bamboo" is incorrect and needs to be changed to something else (possibly Bamboo coral?) or whether there needs to be a disambiguation page for Sea bamboo, or some other solution. Chitons that wikipedia says are extinct (but aren't)

I'll start by admitting that the advantage of the Template:Taxonomy is entirely unclear to me, as it simply makes editing less intuitive (to me at least). Regardless, someone seems to have started a whole bunch of chiton articles using the Catalogue of Fossil Chitons (van Belle, 1981) and listed *everything* as extinct. Unfortunately, this work lists all chitons known from fossil species, including genera and families that have both fossil and extant (~still living) members. I've already noticed that quite a few have been corrected, but the following genera are still incorrectly listed as extinct via the Template:Taxonomy: Ischnochiton, Simplischnochiton (strictly speaking only considered a subgenus of Ischnochiton by most recent authorities, incl. WoRMS), Stenoplax, Callochiton, Ocellochiton (often regarded a subgenus of Callochiton, e.g. O'Neill 1984), Lepidochiton, Tonicella, Chiton and Schizochiton. Other chiton taxa incorrectly listed as extinct using Template:Taxonomy are the subfamilies Callochitoninae, Lepidochitoninae and Chitoninae (see Subgroups in Template:Taxonomy/Ischnochitonidae). I don't fully understand the Template:Taxonomy (it appears I'm not alone) – rather than make a mess, I hope someone with basic knowledge about this template can correct the entries. 62.107.220.212 (talk) 23:20, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

It's a real animal, but the article has some issues. This source (cited in the article) is a good one for some of the obscurer groups of marine organisms. Plantdrew (talk) 23:08, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Giant Medusa Jellyfish

The wiki article states "With only 115 sightings in the last 110 years it is a jellyfish that is rarely seen, but believed to be widespread throughout the world." I have just returned from a kayaking trip in the Chonos Archipelago of Chile. We saw easily a dozen of these huge jellyfish in the Isla Marta Isla Matilda. I can provide photo proof. I think you may be referring to the article Stygiomedusa gigantea. This is a deepwater species of jellyfish that would not normally be seen near the surface, but according to this source is sometimes "upwelled". Are you positive about your identification?
