Overlapping categories
I've been an editor here for awhile but I still don't fully understand how overlapping categories work. Let's say I make a page for an American woman who is a poet. Should I add it to both "American poets" and "American women poets"? Obviously, I want her to be found by people searching in either category. If someone comes along afterwards and removes the former category, is that kosher or discriminatory? (Apologies if this has been answered before; I spent quite awhile tunnelling through various help areas trying to find a clear answer.) Thanks.Alafarge (talk) 17:50, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
- I'm fairly new at editing on here, but I would say she belongs to both categories; however, on some of my page inputs, I have been advised "Toss parent categories where subcats are already included" is a Wiki guideline. SusunW (talk) 18:00, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
- Alafarge, re categories, American women poets is a sub category of American poets. If you click on the category of American women poets and scroll down to the bottom of the page, it shows the categories under which it is a sub. To have the main category is too general. - Basically, the general rule is that you usually don't put an article into both a "parent" and a "child" category. However there are exceptions, and this is one of them -for women writers, I'd say you are right to put people in BOTH, as there was quite an uproar in the mainstream press over someone who was ghettoizing the women writers by moving them from the main "writers" category and putting them in just a "women writers" category, where there was no equivalent "men writers" one. Overcategorizing does no harm, and usually someone who knows the category scheme will clean up after you if you really overdo it. There are also diffusing and non-diffusing categories, and it's hard to know which is which. Essentially, it can't hurt to preview the categories when you can to figure out what the protocol is. In a fully diffused category, Foo writers, there should be ONLY subcategories, say Male Foo writers and Women Foo writers. (Example: Category:Horses. In a non-diffusing category, ALL the articles are listed AND they go into subcats as well (Example: Category:Horse breeds). The reality is that most categories are a total mishmash and seldom does anyone keep them organized! Montanabw(talk) 23:10, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

On Wikidata, thanks to the Wikidata game, almost everybody with an article on Wikipedia has been classified as male or female. On the German Wikipedia, they have categories, which admittedly are so large that you can't really do anything with them. On the Dutch Wikipedia they have banned gender from all occupations and don't use any gender categories at all. It makes it very difficult to get proper information about male vs. female whatever. Even though lots of women on the English Wikipedia have not (yet) been placed into diffusing categories, I like those categories because it's a good place to start searching for women (which in some professions is like the proverbial needle in the haystack). - Seems about right. You want people looking specifically for women writers to be able to find them, but you don't want people just looking for writers not to see any women as though they count less. Interestingly in the case that caused all the ruckus, a "male" category was created, and the appropriate moves were made, IIRC, while the new complex "no-diffusing" rule was being crafted. Short term answer - don't worry about it. Long term answer, replace categories with something better.

Feminism in Mexico
Perusing the main page, I saw that Feminism in Mexico was listed in the category of "Pages needing attention" and thought, that perhaps, as I live here, I could add some information. "Pages needing attention" is an understatement. It has only 2 sentences in the entire article, which IMO speaks to "desperate need of attention."
I have been working for several days on creation of the page, but my strong suit is NOT theory. And I while I speak a tiny bit of Spanish, I am not fluent, by any measure. In addition, though I work in human rights with sexual minorities, and can do the section on "Gender Rebels," the section might benefit from someone who is part of that community and not cis. I am working on the history portion but would truly like to have collaborators for overall balance in the page. Anyone interested? Wiki Ed "Editing Women's Studies" Brochure: Feedback requested
Hello all, Wiki Ed will be distributing a brochure to Women's Studies courses in the USA and Canada that edit Wikipedia as part of their classroom assignments. It will also be available on-wiki and as a pdf for anyone to read or use. I'm hoping to get some feedback on the brochure's contents -- if anyone has some time to review it, I've uploaded a Wiki draft here. - Yesterday when preparing an article on Marta Lamas, I noted that a school she founded in Mexico City is also working on a project. Would be lovely if Mexico, as part of North America, were included in your project. I get that there will be a language curve, but if we truly want to make Wikipedia an inclusive record of knowledge, we need expand our efforts to include other areas. Here's the brochure I found. - WP:Flow is a discussion system. In an ideal world, VisualEditor wouldn't have been turned on for that page. "Edit source" is always available, and needs to be used on discussion pages (unless you want to hand-type your signature, which I'm too lazy to do ;-) WhatamIdoing (talk) 04:07, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

Feminism-focused Inspire Campaign proposal for distributed editing
Dear WikiProject Women's History: I wish to invite you to review an Inspire Campaign proposal and offer feedback if you wish:
What's special about this proposal is it looks to (re)value sporadic editing and respectfully honor the expertise of subject matter experts, without asking them to be responsible for 'fixing' Wikipedia's problems. This is a novel approach that perhaps could gain traction with edit-a-thons and WikiProject initiatives because it comes from a feminist pedagogical perspective for analysis in order to generate re-usable lists to share/work on. The topic for the pilot is not yet set, though it will connect to gender studies and/or feminist theory, but however I wanted to ping the WikiProject Women's History as this proposal could be of interest more generally and I would look forward to your feedback.

The article has been expanded in recent years. There's plenty of good material there already, and there's plenty of high quality biographies and other sources out there that could be used to expand and improve the article. If someone is willing to put in the work, this article could easily reach Good Article or Featured Article status. Let's get Irena Sendler to Good Article!
Irena Sendler is one of Poland's most popular articles (listed as 79 in the current Wikipedia:WikiProject_Poland/Popular_pages), and based on that I wager she is one of the most famous encyclopedic women (as in, in the Top 1000 or so). She was only a start-class article; I've improved her and I think she is ready for a B-class reassessment. I'd appreciate proofreading and copyediting before a Good Article nomination. "WIGI: Wikipedia Gender Inequality Index" Survey invitation

I am a member of Wikipedia Gender Inequality Index (WIGI) project. WIGI is an Individual Engagement Grant that seeks to automate the production and graphing of statistical presentation of gender in articles by various categories such as date of birth, citizenship, occupation, etc. - in a publicly viewable website with open-data downloads.
We're running a brief survey to find out what kind of information users would like captured, ideally about the state of Wikipedia biographies. We will use it to inform what statistics our portal will show and provide a final report on the observed trends at the end of the year.

Copyright Violation Detection - EranBot Project
A new copy-paste detection bot is now in general use on English Wikipedia. Come check it out at the EranBot reporting page. This bot utilizes the Turnitin software (ithenticate), unlike User:CorenSearchBot that relies on a web search API from Yahoo. It checks individual edits rather than just new articles. Please take 15 seconds to visit the EranBot reporting page and check a few of the flagged concerns. Comments welcome regarding potential improvements. These likely copyright violations can be searched by WikiProject categories. Sonia "Sunny" Jacobs
Sonia Jacobs redirects to Jesse Tafero. But the Jesse Tafero article has Sonia link (Sunny Jacobs, which redirects to The Exonerated). Wondering if there should be a Wikipedia article about Sonia. Researching Virginia Houston
I saw Virginia Houston on the Articles requested list, and began some preliminary research with the intention of putting together an article for her. I found some information on her in three books, including: Dreams: Women's Poetry of the Harlem Renaissance, Desire: Race and Sexuality in Cold War American Literature, and Modern Temper: American Culture and Society in the 1920s. History of women in Britain
History of women in Britain currently redirects to Feminism in the United Kingdom, and begins with the 19th century. Boudica died circa AD 60 or 61, so there is clearly a gap which needs to be filled either by going further back through history. Perhaps each of the articles named in the series Template:UKHBS, Template:History of Scotland, Template:History of Wales and Template:History of Ireland need a section on women writing for each article, and then an over-arching page: Women in the United Kingdom (which currently links to a category of that name), where each section is a summary of the different eras with a hat-note that says: See main.
Currently there are a number of articles:
- Women in England - a truly awful article,
- Women in Wales links to a category,
- Women in Scotland links to "Women in early modern Scotland" (early 16th century to the the mid 18th century),
- Women in Northern Ireland links to a truly awful page,
- There is no article for Women in Ireland.

Newbie contributor - women's history in New Zealand
Hi all, I've just started on wikipedia a few days ago; my area of interest is historical women and women's organisations in New Zealand. I've enlarged a few articles and also started some new pages, however I'm wondering if it would be helpful/logical to give them a category (if so, what?!) and/or tag them to this project (is that done, with a box on each article?) and/or consider making a page which is something like "List of notable NZ women" or "List of NZ women's firsts". What would assist people to access these articles most easily? Appreciate any advice! (For an example of an article I've worked on, see Caroline Freeman or Margaret Cruickshank). - MurielMary Just now seeing this post, sorry for the delay in response. Totally your call if you want to make a list. Sometimes it is more helpful to have your subject area included in a larger list, say List of women writers, List of feminists, etc. and sometimes it can be more helpful for them to be country specific. As for categories, unless there are a significant number of people to be added, it will probably be removed. "University of New Zealand alumni" is clearly a utilized category, but a category of a small local school, probably not. For the most part, I try to tag with categories that will help people find my women without being too specific...Mexican women's rights activist, Argentinian women architect, American woman artist, etc. Those categories are usually extant. Project banners on the talk page are important {{WikiProject Women's History}} works for women born before 1950 and {{WikiProject Women}} for women born after 1950, {{WikiProject Feminism}} for those that fall into that scope, {{WikiProject Organizations}} + a woman related project for organizations. Of course, there are tons of WikiProjects, I use Social Work, Nursing, Education + Women a lot. Hope that helps ;) SusunW (talk) 16:50, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

Soldiers
Do women of XX century notable (accordingly to reliable sources) as soldiers still need explicit mentioning as significant contributors to Women's history for inclusion of their biographies into the Project, given that women of combat professions are still relatively rare and there are a plenty of scholarly sources connecting participation of women (in general) in warfare and, especially, their direct engagement in combat with major cultural changes in the Women's history? Tagging talk pages
The Criteria for inclusion – Biographies includes all women born before 1900. Does this mean that the {{WikiProject Women's History}} tag should be added to the talk page of every biography of a woman born before 1900, irrespective of any other connection with women's history? - The actual verbiage for the project says of biographies:
- "The biography of a woman born before 1900 is generally within the scope of this project.
- The biography of a woman born between 1900 and 1950 is within the scope of this project if reliable sources discuss her life or career in the context of women's history or as contributing to significant societal or cultural change."
If you have doubt, you can tag it with {{WikiProject Women}} which covers all people who identify as women and their creative works. But yes, all biographies should be tagged with one of the projects for women if they meet the criteria for tracking purposes. SusunW (talk) 04:14, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

2016 Just For The Record IEG & PEG Grants notification — intersectional & gender diversity on Wikipedia!
Just For The Record has prepared a combined IEG grant and PEG grant application to work on the promotion of more gender diversity on Wikipedia with an intersectional perspective. These grant applications build upon the exciting results of our 2015-2016 Brussels-based series of events addressing the gender gap on Wikipedia. Just For The Record has created a network in which expertise on these questions is created and shared. With our new applications, we want to expand this knowledge and network beyond the context of the edit-a-thon!
If awarded, the PEG grant will fund: location and refreshments for the 2016-2017 Just For The Record edit-a-thons. If awarded, the IEG grant will fund: research and analysis into the representation of gender on Wikipedia, combined with the construction of a research/ambassador network, leading to an intersectional non-sexist guide on how knowledge and history can be written in a more diverse way.
