Well done yourself on adding the men's category. Like you, I am quite surprised no-one had thought of it before. On first seeing the new category, my first thought was "this category must have existed and for some reason been deleted", and I looked for a discussion about it. Your efforts in preserving the factual correctness of wikipedia are commendable. However, I must inform you the Michael James Gallagher entry on the Strabane page is infact a joke to begin with. Thomas Bridges

If you are interested in Thomas Bridges, it might be easier to discuss via email -- he's a relative of my husband -- I'm kerry.raymond@gmail.com But to answer your question. The Brisbane City Council burial register is generally pretty good (apart from typos) from the time that the Council takes control of a cemetery, but Nundah (like most of the earlier cemeteries) was originally administered by private trustees, whose record-keeping wasn't of the same standard, so what records you find from these earlier times is somewhat hit and miss. Yes, Thomas Bridges was buried on the date I claim -- it says so in the funeral notice in the newspaper (which is now available online -- I used microfilm originally -- so I can now add a citation onto the article).

Hello, Prodded the hoax article you tried a speedy on, should have happened regardless of the reasons you used, but not much use causing a fuss. How do you find coordinates so quickly?? Coords

Hey Rocketrod,

Thanks for all your efforts in adding coordinates to Australian articles. It helps a lot. May I just point out a few tips to hone your edits. The type parameter is important to the {{coord}} template as it indicates how the location should be displayed iconographically as well as the default scale for a map. I note that you have added coords to some schools and or tertiary institutions recently. These all should be marked as type:edu in the {{coord}} template. See the {{coord}} documentation for all the values of the type param. If an article has an infobox, check if the infobox has a coords or coordinates parameter to place a call to {{coord}}. See this recent edit of mine to an article that you recently added coords to. Note that your Southings were out by 4 degrees placing the bus station in the ocean between Gladstone and Rockhampton. For Australian places and landmarks, the Australian Gazetteer is a useful, reliable source. Once again, thanks for adding all those coords to Aussie articles. Common interests

Hi, Rocketrod1960! Yet again we seem to have some common interests! I have just been adding a few bits and pieces to your article on the Temple of Peace. However, I am perplexed by the three sons who died in WW1 -- they do not appear in the National Archives, the War Memorial or the Commonwealth War Graves listings either under Ramo or Retzlaff (Richard Retzlaff was German and naturalised in 1905 and changed his surname to Ramo in the process). He has the birth of some sons registered as Retzlaff in NSW in the 1890s, so they are the right age for WW1 service, but it brings me no closer to finding any real sources that they died in World War 1 beyond a Roll of Honour entry supplied by Richard himself. Bertram Steele

Buried in Lutwyche (which is confirmed by the funeral notice) and then later cremated. That is unusual; I wonder why. I tracked down the author of the ADB article (a former colleague of a friend as it turned out) and the cremation was news to him; he said that edits were made to the ADB entry after he wrote it so maybe that is where the info came from. I guess the ADB entry originally said buried in Lutwyche and someone contacted ADB and had it corrected to include the cremation. I wonder who. Curiouser and curiouser. Boggo Road and a Trove tip

Hi, Rocketrod! great work on adding the citations into the Boggo Road Gaol article. However, looking at the Trove citations, it looks like you are doing them manually. There's a much easier way. On each Trove newspaper article webpage, there is a "Cite This" button somewhere in the top left of screen near where the tags are displayed. Click on Cite This and then scroll to the very bottom and you will find a pre-formatted Wikipedia citation for the newspaper article. Just copy and paste it in - much less work for you *and* the URL in the citation is one that the National Library promises will be persistent. The one you copy and paste out of the address bar in your browser is not guaranteed persistent by the NLA (although they do appear persistent in practice) in their current system, but might not be if/when they roll out their new system. Hi Kerry, you are a lifesaver! I was getting bored doing it the manual way but now using the cite button has saved heaps of time! Using the B.C.C. grave finder has been a great help for this task as it helps getting correct names and dates of the hanging.

By the way, good work on getting Nudgee Cemetery started. My father, nephew, and a close workmate are all buried there and so once I have finished with Boggo Rd I am going to put some work into it. There are loads of famous people buried there, Vince Gair being maybe the most famous (Or in his case, infamous?) I have some photos as well so hopefully will be able to make it a good article.

I probably should add that it's not just for the digitised newspapers. All the components of Trove, e.g. books, journals, photos, etc have a "Cite This" (with books, you may have to look at specific editions as they are each cited differently). The placement of the Cite This varies on screen in the different types of material but it's always there somewhere. So it's useful for things like adding Further Reading sections and when uploading photos to Commons (I just use the Cite This as the "source" field in the upload template). Thomas Bridges

I am just wondering why you think Thomas Bridges is a shopkeeper and Seventh Day Adventist. He's part of our family and so I've done a certain amount of family history research on him, and he was a farmer, primarily fruit such as pineapples. I've never picked up his being SDA. Indeed, he doesn't seem to show up as having any strong religious commitments. He was married by Rev B. G. Wilson, who was a Baptist minister, so he might have been Baptist, but in those times, the marriage service was usually decided by the bride's family so it may say more about her family than about Thomas. I have deleted his occupation and religion and left them blank. Does that government website rely on it's own records or people doing historical research? Have they told you why the did the renumbering? It is frustrating to say the least as it has happened at least twice now. Rocketrod1960 (talk) 11:15, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

I think they have people doing historical research. A few years back the register of former members was only partially populated and now it seems complete, so I think it's been a project over the last few years (it may have been one of the Q150 projects originally?). I have emailed them from time to time when my research has turned up something very different to what they have said and they have amended some of the entries as a result. I don't think they are infallible, but they probably do have access to a wider range of sources, e.g. some parliamentary or Qld govt material that we can't access. I mean there is one existing Political families of Australia. I've added a few of the Queensland dynasties to it (probably more but they were all I could think of off the top of my head. For reasons I don't comprehend, some families have sections and other families are just paras in "Other". Kerry (talk) 22:13, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Christ, some of them have near-decade old dedicated articles, most completely unreferenced (i.e. Burke family). Surely we can torch those? On the "Others" stuff - I agree that it seems pretty arbitrary, but moving them all to headings will leave us with a fairly unmanageable number of headings. I wonder if it might be easier to convert the whole thing into a table or something. Hey - just wanted to say thanks for all the great work you're doing on Queensland state politicians. One thing, though - I don't think I agree with the changes you're making to navboxes. We are linking to the article on the electoral district, not an article entirely on members of that district, so I don't think it should be, for example, "Member for Thuringowa" but "Member for Thuringowa". Hi there, I was doing it purely for aesthetic reasons, however you do make a good point! I have worked my way down to Member for Toowoomba North for all the members of Qld Parliament but once I have finished with Yeerongpilly and the members of the Queensland Legislative Council I was going to go right back to the start and check references, add further information, etc and add the remaining members who do not have an article. I can revert the navboxes back to how they were if you agree?

I don't know that we've ever codified it; I know there are examples of both, but more of the latter. I don't feel incredibly strongly about it, but I mainly thought at least I'd be saving you a bit of work changing it over! I think I have fixed all those succession boxes now. Whenever you need to do something that is more or less "the same thing" on many different articles, it is often so much quicker and easier to do this in AutoWikiBrowser, so give me a yell if you think you have that situation. Infobox needed

Given your stated mission to add infoboxes to all the Qld MLA/MLCs, I used AutoWikiBrowser to create a couple of hidden categories:

• Category:QLDMLA needs infobox
• Category:QLDMLC needs infobox

which contain the ones that need infoboxes still. I don't know if doing this helps you or not. It's relatively easy to create categories like this of sets of articles that do or don't have some particular feature. Note I only check if they have an infobox, not what kind of infobox it is. So it is possible that I might have missed a politician if they already had an infobox for some other aspect of their life, e.g. playing cricket or something. I can create categories if they are missing a particular kind of infobox if desired. If this sort of thing is useful to you, let me know what you need. Kerry (talk) 22:20, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Bennett

Thanks again for your work on these South Brisbane MPs - the MacGroarty article was fantastic and told me a bunch I didn't know!

I don't know if you're interested in expanding Col Bennett beyond what's already there, but there's a lot more about him online than what's listed - the memorial speeches in parliament after his death had a lot to say, there's a few articles in Factiva, and IIRC, also in Google Books. In particular, there's a lot more that could be said about his activism against police corruption, his loss of preselection and even his relationship with Aikens.

No worries if you're done with him and would rather move on, but he's a really fascinating character who's been on my list for a while, and I won't have a chance to tackle that one for a fair while due to some personal commitments. The Drover's Wife (talk) 08:44, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

For anyone who's post the Trove era, the parliamentary Hansard speeches made upon their death (if you can get hold of them) are probably the best sources you'll get - they're often a phenomenally useful source of information. For instance, the record when Bromley died is quite long. I tend to also just do a general Google in case anyone else has biographised them, do a Factiva search (which, depending on how interesting the person, gets progressively more useful from the 70s), and have a flick through Google Books. I managed to do some quite detailed articles on some of the 1970s and early 1980s Qld pollies that way. MLA articles for training class

Hi, Rocketrod! I will be teaching Wikipedia edit training classes on Wed this week and Mon next week. About 20+ people involved. As part of this, I need to give each of the students an article to work on (I create a stub and let them take it from there). I was going to create Qld MLA stubs for this purpose. So if you see a lot of one-liner MLA stubs, please don't jump in and expand them (well, not until after next Monday). I need them pretty empty so the students don't have to work too hard to research new information to add to them as the focus of the class will be mechanics of Wikipedia editing rather than the researching so I need the researching part to be easy (point them at the former members website and maybe have them search for an obituary in Trove). The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
