Revision as of 16:43, 17 March 2008
This is a list of the 795 unpledged delegates, also known as superdelegates, who will vote in the 2008 Democratic National Convention as part of the 2008 Democratic Party presidential primaries.
Composition
The Democratic Party’s official rules do not use the term "superdelegate." This is an informal name for unpledged delegates who are selected outside of primaries and caucuses. They are important personalities in the Democratic Party and are comprised of Democratic elected officials and party leaders. The following breakdown does not include superdelegates from Florida and Michigan who will not be seated in response to their states' violations of scheduling rules.
Unpledged Party Leaders and Elected Officials
The formal description (in Rule 9.A) is "Unpledged Party Leaders and Elected Officials".[1]
- 19 Distinguished Party Leaders (DPL) (officially 23[2] less 2 Senators and 1 Governor listed in those categories and Ken Curtis, FL)
- 31 Democratic Governors (incl. the Mayor of DC and Governors of Territories)
- 48 members of the Senate (46 Senators and the 2 Shadow Senators from DC)
- 222 members of the House of Representatives (includes the 4 Congressional Delegates from DC and from the Territories)
- 399 Democratic National Committee Members (actually 403 delegates with 399 votes, considering the 8 Democrats Abroad delegates with ½ vote).
At the present time the total is 719 votes. These numbers can change (for instance, with the upcoming special elections for Representatives). For example, This count reflects recent reductions because of the death of Representative Tom Lantos, the loss of Ken Curtis's credentials because of his current residency in Florida [3] and New York's David Paterson who will become governor when Eliot Spitzer resigns was already an at-large delegate. It also includes recent additions due to the special election victories of Rep. Bill Foster (IL-14) and Andre Carson (IN-7).
Unpledged PLEO delegates should not be confused with Pledged PLEOs, which are allocated to candidates as part of the primaries and caucuses.
Unpledged Add-ons
76[2] Add-On Delegates. Many of them have not been nominated yet.
Totals
The following are the totals according to this list. Other organizations[4] have reported different numbers based on pledged or expected support.

---|---|---|---|

Uncommitted | 260 | 29 | 289 |

- Michigan and Florida delegates may not be seated at the convention and their votes may not count towards the nomination.
- Democrats Abroad superdelegates only count for ½ vote.
- "Unassigned" are add-ons delegate votes not yet assigned and vacant delegates.

* Democrats Abroad superdelegates have ½ vote.
† Statehood Representative Mike Panetta is one of DC's two add-on delegates.[340]
↔ Gov. Ed Rendell (PA), Sen. Robert Byrd (WV), and Sen. Chris Dodd (CT) are credentialed by the DNC as Distinguished Party Leaders[341]
↓ Sen. Barbara Boxer (CA) has publicly committed to cast her vote for Clinton in deference to her state's preference. She explicity distinguishes this from an "endorsement" and will not personally endorse either candidate.
Ж Endorse Date is the actual date of endorsement or earliest instance of public support. For reasons of file size management, candidate-by-candidate citations are not provided. The best source of this information is from the press releases and blog entries of the candidate websites: hillaryclinton.com and barackobama.com. January 20th, 2007 is the date Senator Hilary Clinton opened her exploratory committee for the Presidential Democratic nomination and is thus considered the first date that a superdelegate can endorse her. February 10th, 2007 is the date Senator Barack Obama announced his candidacy for the Presidential Democratic nomination and is thus considered the first date that a superdelegate can endorse him.
