Warning: for legal reasons, we must note that the Resource Exchange cannot fix any medical problems. But it can fix references.

Finding a source

Tips for finding a source yourself

Note that sites like LibGen and Sci-hub offer direct, free access to a very large range of publications, but there are legal questions around their use and neither the Wikimedia Foundation nor the Wikipedia community endorses them.

Making a request
  • A request may be an open question or you may ask for a specific journal, article or work
  • All kinds of sources are possible here: newspapers, magazine article, databases, encyclopedias, court decisions, laws, books, etc.
  • We cannot handle full book scans
  • You may contact research helpers directly or make a request on this page
  • To receive email without disclosing your email address publicly, configure your email in Special:Preferences
  • Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, and date or identifiers like DOI, ISBN ISSN, PMID, etc.
  • Once a request has been fulfilled add the {{Resolved}} template.
  • Filled requests are archived.
  • Requests unfilled after three months will be archived

Fulfilling a request

  • Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests.
  • Indicate which part or parts of the request is being handled so others do not duplicate your work.
  • Notify (mention) the requester using {{ping|REQUESTER_USERNAME}}
  • You can point to a pre-existing electronic document by giving its URL ( http://... ). You can share scans of pages or documents using a file-sharing service, provided it is legal, or by emailing the content to the requester.
  • You can email a link or plain text to a requester using the Special:EmailUser feature but for attachments, you need to ask them to mail you first so you can reply.

Copyright tips:

  • Respect copyrights and terms of services of any online services you use.
  • Share content in a limited manner that is targeted at as few individuals as possible to achieve a specific improvement on Wikipedia. All content is shared under a presumed non-commercial, educational, fair use purpose in order to conduct research about topics on Wikipedia and/or to improve Wikipedia content.
  • Share copies privately rather than with a publicly accessible link whenever possible. Copyrighted articles from print publications or copies obtained through online databases should not be uploaded for unrestricted distribution via open websites. Preferably, do not share login access codes for entire websites; rather, share only an individual copy of a resource.
  • Remember that you take on the individual risk when sharing content, and act in a way that is comfortable and safe for you. Individual editors are solely responsible for sharing copyrighted content and assume all legal risks.

1936 Guardian article: from Guardian digital archive or ProQuest archiver

I'd like to improve Catherine Winkworth. Two sources would be useful:

"PECCAVI": A Good Story Killed, The Manchester Guardian, 14 February 1936.

and

issue 31 of the Gaskell Society newsletter. March 2001. Skrine, Peter. ‘Peccavi.’ [Catherine Winkworth; R.H. Watts. Gaskell Memorial Tower, Knutsford]. [illus.] p7-9.

Thanks. -- Carbon Caryatid (talk) 12:40, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The Gaskell Society says, "If you wish to obtain a back copy of a Newsletter, or a copy of an article, please use the “Contact Us” form with your email address and we will advise on availability and cost." There is a good chance that they would supply a scan of the article free to help Wikipedia. John M Baker (talk) 22:33, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Carbon Caryatid:For the Guardian article -- This is on Page 6 (1 page), if you can find a paper archive. You can find it here in the digital archive of The Guardian (previously known as The Manchester Guardian). Based on Ulrich's info it appears to me that only the Guardian's digital archive will go back to 1936.Jodi.a.schneider (talk) 17:42, 10 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks both! I'll approach the Gaskell Society. Does anyone have access to the Guardian's digital archive? Carbon Caryatid (talk) 17:52, 10 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Carbon Caryatid: It's available on Proquest archiver, which I don't have access to. Hopefully someone else does. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 19:54, 10 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Carbon Caryatid, are you still looking for this? I see you have already cited it in the wiki article; are you still nonetheless looking for a copy of it? Softlavender (talk) 11:49, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for reminding me of this quest, which had slipped off my radar. If I used it in our article, that must have been from a Google snippet view. Yes please I would like to read the whole thing. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 20:43, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Finding source in 1932 issue of Paradise of the Pacific

Can anybody help me find the exact page numbers, author and section/article of this part of the Paradise of the Pacific along with a pdf copy of the relevant pages?

  • . Vol. 45. Honolulu: Press Publishing Co. August 1932. pp. 20–?. OCLC 6372692 http://books.google.com/books?id=Ev_kAAAAMAAJ. {{cite book}}: |journal= ignored (help); Missing or empty |title= (help)

--KAVEBEAR (talk) 23:23, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • KAVEBEAR, since no one has replied, I would just cite the page number, and provide the snippet view as the hyperlink. If the only info you are citing is that tiny mention, you don't need article title and author for proof (and you don't have to use the codes to create a citation). (PS: I added to the section header here for clarification). Unfortunately I'm not sure you are going to get any further help on this RX page. Softlavender (talk) 10:32, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It is not a problem of citation. I want to read the entire article as well. Hopefully someone out there may have access to this in a nearby library or has interlibrary loan options.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 00:55, 27 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Boardwatch Magazine, Amateur Action BBS

@Dsprc: Few libraries have issues before 1999, from which point electronic versions are widely available. Only five have print copies from as far back as 1993: Library of Congress, Cornell University, Clemson University, University of Virginia, and Harry Ransom Center. Your best bet may be to reach out directly to active Wikipedians who have declared a connection with one of those sites. At Cornell, for example, perhaps Cornellrockey or EVDiam would be willing to help. --Worldbruce (talk) 06:44, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Worldbruce: Thanks. How does one find which institutions maintain archives? As an aside: I know Jason Scott of the Internet Archive are in physical possession of every issue and edition but they've yet to be digitised and are sitting stacked in a cargo container. -- dsprc [talk] 09:35, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Dsprc: Worldcat.org is the most common starting point. Coverage of boutique libraries (genealogical, museum, philatelic, etc.) and those in developing countries (like India) is spotty, but for most searches it's invaluable. After that it's donkey work. To discover precisely which issues of a journal a particular library holds, one usually has to visit each individual catalog. --Worldbruce (talk) 13:13, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Dsprc, you might want to utilize Artrieve.com. It is a pay-service, but if the item is a must-have, it may be worth it. They have access to the Library of Congress, etc. (I learned about them from a Wikipedia user, and used them to obtain an obscure 1980 newspaper article I had been needing for many years.) UK Parliamentary Papers 1903

I am looking for the text, please, of a civil list award to Worthington George Smith within the 1903 UK House of Commons Parliamentary Papers (subscription required) volume XXXVI p.137.

I am trying to pin the award date down because ...

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

--Senra (talk) 02:02, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Senra, while I don't have access to the Parliamentary Papers, I note that there is no inconsistency between your two sources. The July 1903 announcement of the civil list was for pensions granted during the year ended March 31, 1903, which obviously would include most of 1902. See, e.g., Leeds and Yorkshire Mercury, July 10, 1903, p. 8 (British Newspaper Archive). John M Baker (talk) 23:25, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
John M Baker: Thank you for the insight but I would still like to see the text of the Parliamentary Papers, if possible, to see if there is anything I missed. Senra (talk) 19:20, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A couple of pages from Essential Solitude

I would like a scan of a couple of pages of Essential Solitude: The Letters of H.P. Lovecraft and August Derleth (Hippocampus Books, 2008). I can see a quote on Google Books as follows: "Just had word of the revival of Astounding Stories (as a largely weird magazine) by Street & Smith. That sounds good! .... I knew that someone had bought it, one T. R. Foley, for $100.00 from the defunct Clayton outfit. He also bought Clues; this..." It seems to be on page 600; I would like enough surrounding information to be able to cite the source -- who wrote the letter and when.

This is for Astounding Stories, to include the information about Foley and the price of the sale, which I haven't seen in any other source. Thanks -- Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 23:52, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The Times articles from 1973

Hi, I'd need the following articles from The Times to extend the reception section of An Imaginary Report on an American Rock Festival:

  • Lipsius, Frank: 27 Apr 1973 (an article about Hungarian puppet and youth theatre)
  • Mills, Bart: "Altamont or Montana" (presumably), 28 July 1973

(The two users with documented access seem to be inactive; @Mirv and Moswento:.) Thanks in advance. – Máté (talk) 18:23, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Máté: I paged through pdfs of the entire 36- and 24-page issues of The Times (London) for 27 April 1973 and 28 July 1973. They contain no such articles. Searching Gale's full text archive of the paper by various methods - author, title, subject, and the keys "Gábor Presser", "An Imaginary Report", and "American Rock Festival" - returned one result that might be helpful: Ungvary, Tamas; Almasi, Miklos; Szanto, Judit (18 December 1973). "Hungary Today: A Cultural Review". The Times. London.
It contains about 700 words by Ungvary on An imaginary Report on an American Pop Festival, evidently at the Vígszínház theatre in Budapest. It mentions Altamont and Gabor Presser, and contains the tantalizing text: "That is, the stars were not right for the Vigszinhaz pop-festival. But as Times readers are aware as well, thanks to an accurate report by Frank Lipsius, the success was extraordinary". I don't know much about the format of The Times in the '70s. Might Lipsius (and Mills) have written in a weekly or monthly supplement that subscribers would have received, but wouldn't have been cataloged and indexed as The Times?
Email me if you would like a pdf of the 18 December 1973 article. --Worldbruce (talk) 04:46, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Worldbruce: Thank you for your effort! It got its English title only in the 1980s, so I don't know how they referred to it. The source for the existence of the two articles (in Hungarian): Lipsius p. 38, Mills. (E-mail sent.) – Máté (talk) 05:01, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Máté: Sent the 18 December 1973 article that I found. I'll keep trying to get access to any supplements that might match up with the sources you provided. --Worldbruce (talk) 13:37, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@WhisperToMe: NewsBank and EBSCO both cover the Dallas Morning News for that date, but neither contains an article by that title on that date, nor does searching by Craig Flournoy or "White Metropolis" return a match for the review on any date. This archived version of the book's website contains a now-dead link to the review that suggests it may have appeared on the newspaper's entertainment website guidelive.com rather than in the actual newspaper, although only someone with access to a physical copy would be able to prove the negative. You might try asking Flournoy for a copy. --Worldbruce (talk) 22:54, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sputnik magazine, July 1970

I'm trying to find a copy of Sputnik, July 1970. It was a Soviet magazine similar to Reader's Digest, and was published by Novosti. Apparently it was published in a few languages; the English copy would be preferred, but any of them would be great.

It's only required for the article in it on the Spaceship Moon theory (not my word!). Apparently this article was titled "IS THE MOON THE CREATION OF INTELLIGENCE?" and was by Mikhail Vasin and Alexander Shcherbakov. We currently have an apparent copy of it hosted on a fringe site,[4] but obviously we can't treat that copy as reliable.

It's for use in Spaceship Moon Theory article. Cheers, Bromley86 (talk) 22:53, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed in accessing source from Taiwanese / Chinese website

As mentioned in the request directly above, I'm working on an article in my sandbox about an animated short film called Le Building. One of the filmmakers (Olivier Staphylas) was interviewed by Taiwanese magazine XFuns in issue #21, published December 2005. I've happened across what appears to be a legitimate Taiwanese or Chinese website, called airitibooks, offering a preview of this particular issue. [5] The magazine's text includes English, but unfortunately, the information on Le Building is on one of the final pages, and the website's preview ends on page 10. In order to access the rest of the issue, I'll need an account, and apparently accounts are only available through one of the libraries specified here. I don't have access to any of these libraries. I've checked the website's FAQ page, to see if there are any other options available to me. For some reason though, when I select the website's English-language option, it fails to translate the FAQ. Could somebody fluent in the language (Google Translate is only telling me that the website is written in "Chinese", so I'm afraid I can't say whether it's Mandarin or Cantonese) give me an overview of the relevant details? Is there any way to access the full issue, without belonging to one of the specified libraries? If not, is there anyone here with access to one of those libraries, who would be able to help me out? --Jpcase (talk) 17:29, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I am looking for an article by Edouard Roditi published in The Jewish Review autumn 1932 titled "Judaism and Poetry" p. 39. I am trying to improve Lazarus Aaronson, an article I'm currently trying to make featured. Thanks! –P. S. Burton (talk) 18:35, 27 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sciences et Avenir issue 147 (2006)

Hi RX,

I'm looking for an issue of French popular science magazine Sciences et Avenir, issue 147 (2006): "Les Fictions de la Science". The whole issue is of interest, but particularly Stéphane Hergueta's article "Les rhinogrades" (or possibly "Rhinogradentia"). It's to use in the article Rhinogradentia. I can't actually read French very well, which makes searching difficult. Best I've found is an ebay listing, which I might end up going for. Thanks! — Rhododendrites talk \\ 22:50, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Locating specific High Court case records from prior to 1982

I am looking for any records of a court case at the High Court in London involving Chee Soo (Clifford Gibbs) who was sued by unknown plaintiffs associated with 'Macrobiotics' who were claiming that his Chang Ming diet was copied from them. The judge found in his favour. I need help from anyone familiar with the High Court in London most likely the Chancery division, and where records prior to 1982 are now located. Chee Soo reported in about 1982 that the records were with the High Court although he did not say the exact date. Considering Chee Soo published "The Tao of Long Life" in 1979 about the Chang Ming diet it is most likely from this period 1979-1982. One letter I have found in an archive at Exeter University mentions a court case to do with publishing awaiting a trial date in 1976, but this may be unrelated. I have tried various case law databases, asked solicitors and the Law Society to no avail. Chang Ming Chee Soo Lee style T'ai Chi Ch'uan --Chuangzu (talk) 20:05, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Chuangzu: By now any case papers will have been destroyed, so unless the case was reported in one of the Law Reports (and not many cases are) there probably won't be anything left. You could try writing to the Head Librarian, Library, Royal Courts of Justice, Strand, London, WC2A 2LL to see if they have anything. Nthep (talk) 20:56, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Coin945: The only one I can find is the Proquest one, but my library and school do not have access to it. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 11:55, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone who has access please take a look at Kenney, Dave (November 1, 2007). Twin Cities Picture Show: A Century of Moviegoing. Minnesota Historical Society Press. ISBN 9780873515955. and compare its text about Minnessota's Terrace Theatre, with the text from the first revision of our article at Terrace Theatre (Minnesota) – which I have placed under investigation for potential copyright infringement. Please also check that book's copyright page to see if it's licensed in some free manner.

The issue is that the article cited this book as the source of certain content, even though that content is copied from a website the content of which is licensed under CC-By-SA 4.0. However, if the book is the source of the text, then the website claiming to license this content under CC-By-SA 4.0 has no authroity to do so, since the copyright was not owned by them in the first place.

Though I'm hoping for a general check, I think starting with the second paragraph in the history section that begins: "When the 1300 seat Terrace Theater opened in 1951, the spectacular venue was the most luxurious, comfortable and up-to-date theater in America" is a good bet sicne that pagraph was specifically cited to this book source. Thanks very much--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:58, 17 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fuhghettaboutit, the book is on Google books, and the required page appears to be included: [6] - page 117. As far as I can tell, the text seems well and truly paraphrased; although the content matches, no verbatim copies are evident. So I think we might be good here. Birth certificate of William Edward de Winton (1856 or 1857 - 1922)

Is anyone here who has access to birth certificates? I have following problem: The obituary in Ibis (1923) state that he was born in 1856 and that he was 65 years old when he died. The National Archives in Kew also state that he was born in 1856 (see here) However, the date on his gravestone shows 1857 for the year of his birth. Is there any way to get access to his certificate of birth? --Melly42 (talk) 19:04, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
