How best to add/edit for Wikipedia an article already drafted with the help of a former Swedish civil engineer and typed in MS Word?
I added an article about my father 'Raymond Ray-Jones' to Wikipedia some years ago and now want to add another 'SfB: the first special classification for the building industry' which is already typed using MS Word. I am the author.Alan (talk) 14:19, 19 May 2021 (UTC)--Alan (talk) 14:19, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

Of course it will need to be modified in accordance with Wikipedia conventions and I'm sure it is not perfect, but having read a lot of Wikipedia 'How-to' pages, I am still not sure how best to go ahead. Can I upload it to editorial main-space and then work on it, or get permission to edit and use an editing wizard, or should I upload it for far more experienced editors to have a look at it first?

Thank you for your help with this query.

Green ribbon

I see that in Wikipedia the green lapel ribbon is used to denote mental health issues. It is also used to denote Lyme Disease. As a person whose Lyme Disease is in remission, I am aware of the use of a green ribbon to denote the disease. Can you please add this fact to Wikipedia under what a green ribbon means.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:c660:1200:150c:d0d1:3c5c:b952 (talkcontribs) 16 May 2021 03:07 (UTC)

You will first need to supply a reliable source for that assertion.--Shantavira|feed me 08:03, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
To expand on Shantavira's reply: everything in Wikipedia needs to be sourced to a reliable published source, because otherwise a reader has no way of verifying it. Your personal knowledge (or mine) is not acceptable. If you can find a source (such as a major newspaper, or a book from a reputable publisher), please make a suggestion on the talk page of the particular article, citing the source. --ColinFine (talk) 20:47, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User box templates?

I've looked in the galleries and haven't been able to find any userbox templates for

Has anybody created templates for these? Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 03:26, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Chatul: If they're not in the userboxen lists, probably not. Confidently not for Bujold because I skimmed the Template namespace links and User namespace links (userboxen are generally hosted in one or the other) and found nothing. For more popular articles that's probably too difficult. In any case, it's likely quicker to pick a userbox style you like, copy the code into a user subpage (or template space if you think others will find it useful) and change the text/image to what you want. If you struggle with this, ping me with the best you can do and I'll try to touch it up. — Bilorv (talk) 14:01, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bilorv: I started with User:Chatul/Userboxen/Smetana and wanted to replace the image with
to get
Vyšehrad above the Vltava River
However, I can't figure out how to rescale it or find a wikilink for a rescaled version. I also can't find the documentation for the syntax of the link, specifically the thumb and right between the link and its name; all that I could find in Help:wikilink was the single piped parameter for the name.
I've got quite a few userboxen on my user page, and wonder whether there is a way to group them into collapsible subsets.
I'm also trying to find a userbox endorsing Elizabeth Warren.
Thanks. Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 17:15, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Chatul: , as in the userbox you linked, works (and you can adjust "70", the number of pixels per row and column, as you require). As for the grouping, there's a collapsible option suggested at Wikipedia:Userboxes#Grouping userboxes. — Bilorv (talk) 17:55, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The userboxgroup template did the trick. Thanks. 20:39, 16 May 2021 (UTC)Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk)

Using image as userpage background

Hi
I've previously seen people use images as the background of their user pages on English Wikipedia. When you hover your cursor over these images, they appear to not link to anything and are therefore non-interactive. I've also seen users superimpose text, tables and infoboxes over these background images. Does anyone know how I would be able to do such a thing for my own userpage? HeyitsBen talk 18:37, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

HeyitsBen, can you point to an example? LittlePuppers (talk) 01:26, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@HeyitsBen and LittlePuppers: Because it is not possible to insert images into the background-image property (the server will remove it while parsing because URLS are regarded as unsafe) I suspect this has been done using a complex css construct. But I would need to take a looo at the individual case, too. Victor Schmidt (talk) 05:21, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding external links: I read WP:ELNO but there are a couple of cases that are not clear to me. (1) Is it OK to link to lyrics websites in articles about a song? (2) ELNO says don't link to mirrors or forks of Wikipedia, but we have Wikipedia:Mirrors_and_forks/ABC and other pages like it which provide such links. Is that OK? RudolfRed (talk) 18:52, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

WP:ELNO applies only in the main space. Ruslik_Zero 20:26, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! RudolfRed (talk) 20:46, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
But, RudolfRed, if the lyrics website is violating copyright, then you may not link to it. I suspect that many of them do so, though I don't know for sure. --ColinFine (talk) 20:50, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We shouldn't be linking to copyright violations in any namespace, ELNO be damned. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 04:15, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Does CHAOS (operating system) really have a promotional tone to it?

I scanned over the article and nothing sounded promotional to me. I'm still new so I'm not sure if there's something I'm missing or if the tag should just be removed. If there is something I would really appreciate it if someone could show me what it is! PeanutButterPopcorn (talk) 23:53, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@PeanutButterPopcorn: The headings are very suspect; you would be hard-pressed to find them on other articles. The way the article is structured (especially with headings like Security assessed by and Security provided by) looks to promote certain entities. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:04, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My own photo has been "speedily removed" from my wiki page

How do I post my own photo to my own wiki page? How do I "Verify" my own photo taken by a family member? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Count Erich Manfred von Siebenburg (talkcontribs) 00:00, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Whoever holds the copyright to the image (which, in this case, is most likely that family member) needs to go through the procedure at WP:Donating copyrighted materials. This is a requirement; we do not allow fair-use images of living people. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 04:14, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Count Erich Manfred von Siebenburg, here's the easiest way: Assuming the image hasn't been published before (social media, imdb, whatever), have the photographer upload it with the process that starts here. That is a link to Commons, a sister-site to WP where we keep free images. If this is about Stephen M. Ryder, that article is likely to be deleted per WP:GNG and WP:BASIC. You need to cite references, and good ones. WP is very strict about copyright, so copypasting text from other websites is not allowed. See also WP:COI. Hello,

Recently we have had a lot of silly edits to our companies description. Most likely school students who think it's funny to change the description of our school and edit the name of our Principal. We have updated this a few times and they keep changing it.

I am wondering if there is any way we can stop this from happening...?

Cite warning: tags and sfn footnotes inside notetag notes, it all falls apart if you try to define the notetag footnotes inside the notefoot. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:22, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

St Monica's College Promotions Team. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PromotionsandEvents (talkcontribs)

@PromotionsandEvents: Pages are protected for reasons like vandalism, not for preventing others from editing them due to some arbitrary criteria. Ironically, you would be considered one of the people who shouldn't directly edit the article. I suggest you abandon this account as your username violates the username policy and declare your paid relationship with St Monica's College on an account that adheres to said username policy; you may use paid to do so. Any changes you want to make should go through the edit request process. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:49, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I should also point out that articles don't belong to anybody. Wikipedia is a collaborative project that relies on consensus when content disputes occur. You have also been asked not to post promotional material on here, which goes against Wikipedia policy. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:52, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, PromotionsandEvents. It might help if you understand that Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. Incidentally, I think your user name falls foul of our user name policy in that it suggests that the account is shared by different people. Please change it. --ColinFine (talk) 12:53, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Olivia Rodrigo -- adding main image

Hello, I am looking at Olivia Rodrigo's page, and I think it's a good time to add a picture of her in her summary... I'm not sure how to do that... I found this one (https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BYTYxODRmNzItMGFkNS00Mzk4LTk0NTMtYjdiYjgwYWNhODQ2XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNTg1MDY4NjQ@._V1_.jpg) so I'm wondering if I could be aided with this... thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kr!shna s!s! (talkcontribs)

I'm afraid you can't add that particular image. Wikipedia has much stricter standards regarding copyright than, for example, social media. Images must be released under a free license or you must have a valid fair use rationale. For images of living people it is assumed that as long as they are alive it is possible to get a free image at some point, so chances are slim that there is a rationale that would be accepted. Beeblebrox (talk) 02:07, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Kr!shna s!s!: By default, the answer is no, as images are presumed to have a copyright on them, which Wikipedia can't use (unless the image manages to meet all of the fair use criteria). —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:08, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Someone has uploaded an improperly licensed image of Olivia Rodrigo to Wikimedia Commons, where it is tagged for deletion. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:04, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There's also now a copyvio image on en.wiki, which I've also nominated for deletion. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:25, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Table help

I just made a fix to Gregson Maluma the close a table, which got the article references to be outside the table as they should be. But the header of the table itself is still messed-up. MB 03:41, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable Source??

Good Day and Hello, I find myself at a conundrum, and hence I once again turn to 'here' for guidance. Whilst browsing WP:CBM I happened upon this page St._Xavier's_High_School,_Fort#Notable_alumni which had this TAG:Template:Alumni. My question is: Is the School's Official Website a 'RELIABLE SOURCE' for whether the person mentioned was an Alumni or not?? And If it is, after citing the School Website as source, can I substitute the Template:Alumni with Template:Alumni editnotice ??

Writing an article

How do I write and post a article on Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2402:4000:12CC:C116:6927:97C7:D3B4:5DA5 (talk) 11:43, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Creating an article is one of the hardest tasks on wikipedia. You should gain experience editing regular articles before you create any new ones. That being said, info can be found at WP:YFA. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 11:46, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The very first step is to make sure the subject of your article is notable by our definition (WP:N). If the subject is not notable, your article will be deleted and your effort will be wasted. -Arch dude (talk) 15:51, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How do I change "intermediate revisions not shown" when looking at diffs?

When I click "cur" on a page's history, it used to show me all of the changes between that version of the article and the current one. Now, however, if the same user has been making multiple edits to the page, I get to see only the changes from that one edit and a little message in the middle of the screen that reads "(4 intermediate revisions by the same user not shown)" or equivalent. This must be a setting somewhere, but I can't seem to find how to change it. I now have to look at every diff one by one, which is very inconvenient. How do I change this setting? Thanks for your help. Ganesha811 (talk) 16:56, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ganesha811: There is no setting for this. I must tell you that the message is a bit misleading. Whenever you ask the software to render a diff between twoo revisions, the software simply renders a difference between the two revisions without looking at the intermediate edits. Means, You will see all changes made by the individual edits merged into a single diff. To bettr explain that, lets assume that this is the History of Some Example article:
1. revision #123, By Example User
2. revision #234, By Example User
3. revision #345, By Example User
When you would ask the software to render the diff between revisions 123 and 345, you will see all the changes, including those that were actually made in revision #234. The notice is simply there so you know somebody changed something in between. Victor Schmidt (talk) 17:20, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Victor Schmidt, thanks for the explanation, that's very helpful! Ganesha811 (talk) 17:29, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Racial demographics of the Arbitration Committee

The article on the Lincoln Project has little to no information about Rick Wilson's history of racism. Moreover, the edits mentioning these facts have been consistently ignored. I would like to know if ALL members of the Arbitration Committee identify as white, and why the Arbitration Committee persistently defends a racist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Archon0112 (talkcontribs) 20:48, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Archon0112: The Arbitration Committee is tasked with resolving editor conduct disputes, and the committee members are not responsible for the Rick Wilson article nor the Lincoln Project article. You'll need to provide high-quality, reliable sources to back up any information that you want to add, and if your edits are reverted, you should open a discussion on the article's talk page to gain a consensus for the change — see WP:BRD for more information. Also, The Lincoln Project is about the organization and not focused primarily on Wilson, and we need to consider due and undue weight of information in articles. What are you getting at with this response? It reads like you're implying that this user might be subject to sanctions for asking about this, which is certainly false and inappropriate. -Elmer Clark (talk) 05:17, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm guessing this is in reference to some article like this one. It's true that that article was semiprotected, but that process has nothing to do with the Arbitration Committee - any user can request that an article be semiprotected, and once consensus is built, any of our 1000+ administrators can pull the trigger. If you believe that the Confederate flag cooler Tweet incident mentioned at Rick Wilson (political consultant) is significant enough to the overall story of the Lincoln Project that it should be mentioned on its page as well, feel free to start a discussion at Talk:The Lincoln Project - it doesn't seem that anyone has ever even brought up the subject on that talk page, and that should always be your first recourse if you think an edit has been unjustly reverted or an article's coverage is slanted. -Elmer Clark (talk) 05:17, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question regarding retroactively adding edit summaries.

Hi there, I recently added Clear to Family Guy (season 17) where I accidentally clicked "Publish changes" before writing an edit summary. Help:Edit summary says that the times where I don't put edit summaries are tracked, and even though this probably won't affect me since I'm definitely not becoming an admin any time soon, I'd prefer having a clean record (even though it doesn't/hasn't show(ed) up on [1]), so I was wondering if there was a way to add one retroactively by, for example, reverting the edit and then doing it again with an edit summary or something. Thanks in advance! davidxu160801 (talk) 01:20, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Davidxu160801: No, there's no way to retroactively add an edit summary. Don't worry about it though, no one will mind as long as you continue to regularly use edit summaries. If you make a substantial change to a page and forget to include one, you can follow up with a dummy edit to explain your change. DanCherek (talk) 01:15, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Davidxu160801: In your preferences you might like to tick the option "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary". -- John of Reading (talk) 06:48, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sources

Let's say if a company says on their own web page "We were founded in 1920", are we allowed to cite that? Or is that source a COI? Thank you! --Abillionradios (talk) 02:26, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Abillionradios. For the sake of discussion, let's assume that the company is notable and has a good reputation, based on significant coverage in reliable sources, and those sources go back decades. Then, the company itself is is an acceptable source for its founding date. On the other hand, let's assume that the company is described in reliable sources as a "start-up" and has a reputation for not telling the truth to customers and investors. In that case, an independent, reliable source would be required. It is a matter of editorial judgment. Good judgment. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:44, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Adamant Editor won't allow Edits.

Good Day, I would like to bring to your attention this Wikipage: I.C. Colony. The Page has ZERO citation / references, The entire write up reeks of WP:PROMO / WP:SOAP. The Editors refuse to allow any changes to the page(all edits are reverted), even Templates like Template:Citation Needed & Template:POV statement are deleted. This is not what wikipedia is about. The Article is tagged TEMPLATE:Unreferenced which means any uncited claim can and should be challenged / removed. But, sadly that's not what is being allowed to happen. @SierraTangoCharlie1, Jéské Couriano, and Shaquille.oatmeal3333: I think we should at least try to get a response from the editor in question first - it doesn't look like there has been any attempt at communication beyond edit summaries. He should have been pinged by now, so I would wait for further action before going to ANI (but I won't prevent you from doing so). LittlePuppers (talk) 13:07, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

From my watchlist, I can see that Shaquille.oatmeal3333 tried to delete the contents of the chat page and was reverted by other editors. The person doesn't seem to want to engage in communication, but only engages reverting other Edits.
