Windows Live is the collective brand name for a group of Microsoft services. Being partly rebranded from MSN, the new, consolidated online services are Microsoft's latest effort to compete against fast-growing competitors such as Google. A majority of these services are web applications accessed via a web browser. This type of software is thought by many, including Microsoft and Google, to be the future of computing because the services and user data are available anywhere, without installing an application. [citation needed]

Some of the services that currently have the Windows Live branding are Windows Live Hotmail, Windows Live Favorites, Windows Live OneCare, Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Search, Windows Live Alerts, and Windows Live Maps. Most remain in the beta stage of production, but twelve have released their first final version: Windows Live OneCare, Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner, Windows Live Custom Domains, Windows Live Favorites, Windows Live ID, Windows Live Maps, Windows Live Mail Mobile, Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Spaces, Windows Live Search, Windows Live Toolbar and Windows Live Expo. Many familiar MSN services will be replaced with an updated Windows Live service, marking a significant shift from the "Microsoft Network" name to an online service more closely related to the Windows operating system brand (Windows Live Network).[citation needed]

Windows Live Butterfly

In order to recognise the contributions of beta testers, Microsoft has inititated the Windows Live Butterfly awards program (formerly the MSN Butterfly program).

Prospective 'butterflies' are selected by the (Microsoft internal) Windows Live product team and are nominated for a minimum term of one year, after which they must be selected again by the internal product teams or their membership in the group will be dropped.

Selected Butterflies have been re-recognized for the year of 2007.
