:Hi there! Oof... That's tough. Do you remember your email at all? Did you log into it on another computer anywhere, anywhere at all. I think you need to start with recovering what your email address is that you registered with your account. Then, you can recover your email's password. From there, recovery of your password here will be easy. But let's start at "square one" - your email address? "What was it?" should be your mission now if you don't know what it was. Please let me know if I can help in any way. :-) <b><span style="color:#C00000">~Oshwah~</span></b><small><b><span style="color:blue">(talk)</span> <span style="color:green">(contribs)</span></b></small> 02:21, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Wrongfully Deleted (or Not)?

Hello Oshwah,

Hope this message finds you well.

I was hoping to get your help/opinion on the following. I’m writing because about two years or so back an article that was written about me and had existed for many years was deleted. The page was not initially created by me but, in full disclosure, I did correct or amended it from time to time over the years to keep the information accurate. When I noticed the page was marked for deletion, I reached out to the editor who marked it as such to ask why, explained who I was and what I just detailed above here for you. My inquiry was met with a snarky nasty response accusing me of creating the page myself, using it for self-promotion, etc. (I was just being honest and didn’t realize at the time that editing a page about me personally, without following proper guidelines, was frowned upon). Soon after, the page was deleted. Ultimately, after doing some research, I’ve come to learn more about what is and is not acceptable in this space and believe that the article that was deleted was not promotional in nature, just a listing of facts. I also think that it met notability criteria. As such, I believe the article was wrongly deleted. It also bears mentioning that the rude editor I corresponded with and who I believe deleted the page has since been dismissed from Wikipedia for misconduct. For your reference, the article in question was listed under my name, “Mark Bacino.” Was hoping you might be so kind as to take a look to see if the article as is (or an amended version) could be reinstated or if it was truly removed for proper reasons. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

@QueensEnglish: Not Oshwah, but your best venue would be deletion review. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 07:15, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Skarmory, Thanks so much for your reply and your helpful feedback. As someone who has very little understanding of the ins and outs of Wikipedia, I find the deletion review instructions utterly baffling. Is there a way you could suggest that I might find an experienced editor to help with the process? The Teahouse? Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks again. QueensEnglish (talk) 11:14, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi QueensEnglish! I apologize for such an extreme delay with responding to your messages here. Life has been keeping me very busy as of late. :-) The article page that you're referring to was deleted under G11 of Wikipedia's speedy deletion criteria, meaning that it was found to be "unambiguous advertising or promotion". You're of course welcome to use the deletion review process and have the deletion looked into, and if you need help with this, you're of course welcome to ask for it at the Wikipedia Teahouse. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them and assist you further. :-) Take care! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:25, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Oshwah,
Thank you so much for your kind reply and no apologies necessary for the delay in response. Thanks as well for looking into the article and why it was deleted. Re: the G11 ruling, going on memory, I never got the impression from the article (obviously I can no longer see it ; ) that the piece was overtly promotional. I believe it was just a descriptive listing of facts, things that the subject (me ;) had done over the span of a career to date. I was wondering if you had a chance to review the piece and if so, from your knowledgeable perspective if you personally felt that the piece was promotional in nature? Again, since the editor who deleted the article has since been removed from Wikipedia for misconduct, I still believe it was a wrongful, somewhat bias deletion simply based on the fact that I was honest with the editor and told them the article I was inquiring about was about me and so they sited a conflict of interest, etc. without letting me even explain that I didn't create the page, etc. I would love to have the page reviewed but I'm very confused as to how to go about it. I guess I need to inquire at the Teahouse for help. I suppose I'm wondering if you think it's even possible that the article could get reinstated?
Thanks again for your kindness and generosity. Hope to hear from you! QueensEnglish (talk) 04:24, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wishing to see the contents of drafted KidsTube.com pages

Greetings

I am trying to gather as much info as I can about a website that I used to frequent when I was younger. I notice that some users tried creating pages on Wikipedia about the website many years ago but they were deleted https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&logid=25745414 Would I be able to see the three pages that were deleted?

Thank you kindly Stapmoshun (talk) 00:10, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Stapmoshun You can try asking at Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:18, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Salvatore Rebecchini on Farouk of Egypt (19:40, 17 June 2023)

Hello I would like to change the name of d’emilio in D’Amelio in the page of Farouk of Egypt --Salvatore Rebecchini (talk) 19:40, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Salvatore Rebecchini! There is a process you must follow in order to officially make that request. Click here for the instructions. Looking at the nature of your request, I believe that it may fall into the category of controversy. Good luck! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:05, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A trigger of your edit filter

Hi Oshwah,

I noticed that a suspected sockpuppet ShimShamOneMan has triggered one of your edit filter on LTA editing pattern at Special:Diff/1154145091 when I investigated the SPI case Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/WorldCup2026. Could you explain to me which LTA ShimShamOneMan might be and which pattern they hit? NmWTfs85lXusaybq (talk) 10:04, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi NmWTfs85lXusaybq! Thanks for the message! On the top of my head, I don't know; I'll have to review each hit to get an understanding of the series of events and timeline. To answer your question: That LTA likely hit edit filter #53, an edit filter that I actually designed and built for Wikipedia. It's an extremely complex, in-depth, and consistently updated filter. It job is to watch edits to Wikipedia pages, and it flags LTA behavior when the attempt to save the edit is made. It runs alongside its other half, edit filter #51, which I also built. Its job is to do the same exact thing, but with 100% focus on username creations. A little... history story. These two filters stated at #51 and were combined to perform both tasks. However, the complexity of the code I put together ended up becoming so large that Wikipedia's debug tool, and the beta Wikipedia couldn't run it. Hence, they have been split into two. :-) I'll take a look at the logs this evening - I'm not sure what I'll find. Cheers :-) - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:01, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your IAdmin flag

Hi Oshwah, per the Interface Administrators activity requirements, you are inactive in this area. I'd rather avoid needles bitflipping if you are just going to hop over to WP:BN to turn this back on tomorrow - perhaps you could make a trivial edit to say User:Oshwah2/common.css to reset the clock - please review and ping me with if you made an edit or if you'd rather be toggled off for now (you can always ask back at WP:BN). Best regards, — xaosflux Talk 23:28, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Xaosflux! It's been awhile! I hope you're doing well and that life is treating you kindly. Regarding the bitflip -  Done. You took the words out of my mouth in your message above. I'd like to avoid getting tied up in bureaucracy if it's something like this. Thank you for allowing me to do that. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:50, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Study Invitation about Edit Filters

Hi @Oshwah, I came across your user page and noticed you are a manager of edit filters! I wonder if you are interested in our ongoing study that aims to understand the effectiveness of these filters. Specifically, the study try to evaluate AI models that power recent change filters, Huggle, SWViewer, and many other anti-vandal tools. Your feedback can be really helpful! If you're interested, please check out our recruitment page for more information. Thank you for your consideration! Tzusheng (talk) 18:06, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question about blocks

When you hide a block log, like you did recently, is it supposed to also hide the block notification in the user's contributions or is that another side effect from whatever made it always yellow? (I also peeked at your village pump section, glad to know it's not just on my end) – 2804:F14:80DB:4701:414B:6FE6:EBC8:E6F2 (talk) 23:21, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! A block will always appear as a block notification on the user's contributions page. The only exception is in the case where the block log for this user is rev del'd by an administrator. The only time I rev del a block log (or any log at all, really...) is if the username of the account unambiguously and grossly meets RD2 - extremely insulting, degrading, or offensive, or if the username is a serious BLP violation. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:45, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Has that ever resulted in a situation where people reported a username thinking it wasn't blocked yet? But nah yeah that makes sense, I just thought it might have been another side effect of the colour change. There was also a case with <a /64 block>, where if I click the block log button the block just isn't there either (although it is in the admin's logs), which I have never experienced before.
I just saw all three things almost all at once and thought something was seriously broken, glad it isn't. Thanks for the explanation. – 2804:F14:80DB:4701:414B:6FE6:EBC8:E6F2 (talk) 00:08, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance for new page

Hey Oshwah, would like to start by saying thank you for all your contributions. I am looking to find assistance in starting my page. Thank you TwoTiime (talk) 00:02, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi TwoTiime, and thanks for the message! I highly recommend that you review Wikipedia's conflict of interest and no original research policies. In short, Wikipedia highly discourages its users from writing an article about themselves (an autobiography) or subjects where they have a personal conflict of interest with. One reason is because it's nearly impossible for the user to write the article to reflect a neutral point of view. If the subject is notable, another user will certainly write the article.
Also, you cannot add content and "cite yourself" simply because you have a close relationship or experience with the article subject. Adding content citing one's relationship, experience, association, or even one's own website, work, or research constitutes original research, which is not allowed on Wikipedia. This is because it's impossible for other editors and readers to verify that content is accurate and true. It's as if I were to say, "I'm the President of the United States". Would you believe me? No! You'd want some kind of verification, source, or proof to show that what I'm saying is true. If you asked me for that information and I responded, "I'm citing myself as the proof" - you wouldn't just disbelieve my statement, you'd probably laugh and think that I'm crazy. I mean this with all due respect, but your edit and the "source" you provided in your message here is almost the same thing as the example I just talked about. There's no way for us to verify that the content is correct, and this is why original research is not allowed. According to Wikipeida's verifiability and No original research policies, all content on Wikipedia must be attributable to a reliable source, and specific information such as direct or spoken quotes, dates, data, information that's instantaneous, or other content likely to be challenged or removed - must be directly attributed to a reliable source via a citation.
Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks again for the message, and I wish you a great day and happy editing. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:05, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

CU Block

Thank you for dealing with all those GarryHenderson6 block evasions. This is a bizarre case of someone who started contributing well, then it started showing that they have an extreme hate on for the cathedral in Canterbury, started edit warring to remove mentions and prominence of it (it's only the single most important building in Canterbury and the reason for the city's existence) and inserting that the city is a dump and other disruptive editing all within a final two day period. And then socking left right and centre. But thanks again. Canterbury Tail talk 18:42, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Canterbury Tail - No problem; always happy to do a little cleaning around here! ;-) It's a bizarre situation for sure; definitely not your typical good-hand, bad-hand editing (something that surprisingly occurs more often than I expected).
Psychologically, nearly all good-hand bad-hand editors behave this way because their primary intent from the beginning is to disrupt and troll Wikipedia. They somehow believe that making good edits on the same or other accounts will "offset" what they're doing and make it harder for us to detect or quickly conclude their bad faith intentions. It's hard to say whether or not this user's primary intention was to vandalize or disrupt the project; if anything, they ran into an article subject and topic that happened to strike a huge nerve or emotional thorn, and what you saw was the result of their viewpoint or their anger toward the topic. That, in addition to good-hand bad-hand editing, also surprisingly occurs more often than I expected and others expect. Thanks again for the message, and please don't be a stranger if I can provide advice, input, or assistance with anything. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:13, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. We haven't every interacted that much. It's rare but I do, as all admins do, need the occasionally CheckUser done. So always good to have someone willing to do so (with the appropriate evidence and justification obviously, this isn't a tool to just pull out at random.) Canterbury Tail talk 19:21, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Canterbury Tail - No worries; I understand what you meant. ;-) If you run into a situation where a CU is needed and if you can't find someone, drop me a line and I'll be glad to offer my assistance. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:42, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Zai44057 (21:18, 12 July 2023)

how do i make a wiki page --Zai44057 (talk) 21:18, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy! I have asked some questions on your talk page. Let's talk there. BusterD (talk) 21:28, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Could you and I go over the value of tools?

Given I just told another younger editor to read it, I re-read WP:BLOCK myself today. Today, I went out of my way to avoid even partially blocking a new editor (it felt bitey), choosing to adjust page protection briefly. I've been in several situations lately where I felt I should block based on current behavior but chose another solution. In my RFA you questioned me about blocking and I didn't feel strongly about my answer then. Would you mind if you and I had a dialog of some kind about when to draw the line? BusterD (talk) 21:24, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As I was saying. Thanks for the help at Chapel. BusterD (talk) 19:13, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi BusterD! I'll be absolutely 100% happy to go over anything you need, give you any input, advice, and information that you're looking for, and get you set up for success. When and how would you like to chat? :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:16, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi The Chidush Rabbi, and welcome to Wikipedia! By "article", I believe you're referring to your user page. It was deleted for meeting Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion due to the content only consisting of advertising or promotion (this includes users talking about themselves and their activity outside of Wikipedia). See this section (specifically [[WP:UP#PROMO|this rule) on Wikipedia's policies on user pages. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:42, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ACC approval query

Hello @Oshwah, I hope you're doing great. I tried to reach out to you via IRC but it seems my message didn't go through. Anyways, I saw that you're a tool administrator for the Account creation Interface, and so would like to ask you to review my application. I requested access to the interface more than 3 months ago I reckon, but have not received any update about the same (either approval or denial). I would be delighted if you can take action and approve my request, and if not, deny it so that I can improve on the reason(s) for denial. I have made myself familiar with the appropriate guidelines and am confident to take this role. Thanks for your understanding. ❯❯❯ Raydann(Talk) 11:22, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Raydann! Thanks for the message and for letting me know about your application to join the account creation team as an ACC Tool User. I will start by saying that the ACC Tool Administrator team needs to be more diligent with checking for new ACC Tool User applications, as well as responding to them. I'm actually the person that usually checks for new applications and begins relevant discussion to get input from other ACC Tool admins if there are no obvious red flags or issues that would easily bar the user from being approved. I'll check your application (as well as any application submitted by other users) tomorrow; thank you for the reminder that I need to do this, and I apologize for allowing the application process to take this long. If you have other questions or if you need anything else, please let me know and I'll be happy to help. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:13, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Gallidae199 (16:27, 22 July 2023)

Hi I have a photograph of Houghton Poultry Research station from an annual report of 1974. Can I use it in the Wikipedia article on same. I have published the photo before in a book I edited? --Gallidae199 (talk) 16:27, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gallidae199! Welcome to Wikipedia! The answer to your question depends heavily (if not almost entirely) on whether or not the image's copyrights allow for its replication, distribution, or use here. You'll find extensive help and explanation of Wikipedia's policies on copyright requirements by clicking here (specifically, this section of that page will be relevant to you). It also wouldn't be a bad idea to also read through this page regarding copyright violations on Wikipedia. After reading through those pages, if you have any questions or don't understand a requirement or concept, please let me know and I'll be happy to help! :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:19, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Hami09 on Draft:Hayat (10:43, 23 July 2023)

Hi I want to add pictures to my article --Hami09 (talk) 10:43, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hami09, and welcome to Wikipedia! It sounds like you're looking for help with how to add and use images on Wikipedia. If that's the case, you can check out Wikipedia's information page on images here. It lists relevant tutorials, guidelines, and policies involving their use. The very important thing that you need to make sure that you understand and comply with at all times is Wikipedia's policy on copyrights, and to avoid causing any copyright violations. Obeying media copyrights is extremely crucial on Wikipedia; it's a policy that we take very seriously, and causing violations due to carelessness or lack of knowledge (especially if repeated) usually leads to users being blocked from editing Wikipedia until they can demonstrate that they understand the policy and will not cause further copyright issues. It can even hurt your future on Wikipedia as far as community trust and holding account permissions goes. So please read through those policies and be diligent and careful with uploading and using images here. Hi why has my edit been reversed? Zita Sattar is not in a relationship with Declan O’Dwyer. Declan O’Dwyer will soon be marrying Zoey Rocha. Please see link to their wedding website. https://www.zola.com/wedding/zoeyanddeclan

Please can you remove Declan O’Dwyer from Zita Sattar’s page. --Cmar1968 (talk) 21:27, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cmar1968! Welcome to Wikipedia! Your reference constitutes a primary source, since the URL is to the wedding page that's (apparently) being run by the article subject. I would review Wikipedia's policy on reliable sources, locate references that meet this criteria, and then try again. You'll to cite those references in-line with your changes. If there are still issues, start a discussion on the article's talk page; don't edit war. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Best wishes - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:09, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Cmar1968, I'm not sure why you posted your question here instead of mine or the article talk page, but the reason I reverted your edit is because, while what you're saying about Sattar and O'Dwyer is likely true, it needs to be supported by a credible reference. Had you included the wedding page you mention above, I might have left your edit as it was, but that wouldn't have been ideal either, as Oshwah has explained. Hope you understand. The accounts you just blocked with a slur in their name

It might be wise to scrub WP:UAA too, as I had reported those there. LilianaUwU (talk / contributions) 04:44, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi LilianaUwU! It's been awhile since we've said "hello" to one another! I hope life is treating you well. Thanks for letting me know -  Done. If you ever need my input, awareness, advice, or assistance, don't be a stranger. I'll be happy to lend a hand. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:01, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Life's been... eh. Could be better. And you? LilianaUwU (talk / contributions) 05:03, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
LilianaUwU - I'm honestly kind of in the same boat personally; a "mixed bag" is what I'd call my life right now. I'm busy with work, and it takes a lot of energy out of me by the time I'm done with the day. On top of that, I'm trying to study for a certification exam that I need to pass and earn before I'm considered for promotion and better pay. So basically I'm busting ass at work, then I'm expected to study for a needed exam during my personal life and not be paid for that. {(s)}Just so... wonderful... it's what I just look forward to doing when I get home.{(/s)} I have college degrees - one in computer software engineering and the other one in applied mathematics, and I'm having to fight tooth-and-nail so I can make ends meet at times.
I see on social media where people who have jobs that are really not great (minimum wage or more, no benefits, anyone can apply and would be hired) constantly talking about vacations, new car, and other stuff. How?!! Are you taking out loans or going into deep debt? How do they do it?!! I'm on beans and rice for meals, driving a 30 year old beater truck, and paying rent each month to live in a shelter that's (literally) double what my parents paid each month to purchase a house! Not rent... purchase. I just really am starting to feel worn out with it all... :-/ ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:11, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi sir.please do tell me how to edit stuff. I am eally interested in physics and its various laws.

Thank you, regards, your apprentice --AlbertEinstein relativity (talk) 06:13, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AlbertEinstein relativity! Welcome to Wikipedia! I'm glad that you're here to edit and help expand the project, and I'm glad you're here to receive assistance with doing so. :-) Wikipedia's getting started page is a great place for first-time users to start learning about Wikipedia, how to contribute, and how things work around here (in a general sense). One of the first pages listed in the getting started guide is this tutorial, which guides you step-by-step though editing a page, creating a page, and responding to discussion. I would absolutely go through and complete this tutorial; it will provide you with a lot of interactive help. If you have questions or need anything else, please let me know and I'll be happy to lend a hand. :-) Again, I welcome you on board, and I wish you happy editing. Question from Abdulla aptask (18:26, 28 July 2023)

i want to create a page for my company, how do i go about doing it? --Abdulla aptask (talk) 18:26, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Abdulla aptask! Welcome to Wikipedia! The short answer to your question is that you shouldn't do that at all. Wikipedia's principles and guidelines highly discourage creating or contributing to any articles or pages where you have a personal conflict of interest with. This is because of the fact that those who do this have an obvious bias, viewpoint, or involvement with the article subject, which in turn makes it nearly impossible for them to write content that is worded to reflect a neutral point of view, which is required for all article content.
Users who decide to continue and do this anyways will almost-100% always find out (either quickly or eventually) that all of the time, energy, and effort they spent toward creating, writing, and expanding this article have gone to complete waste and toward no result or impact at all. Editors often patrol new article and pages (including myself), and it's very easy from just reading through the newly-added content to spot users who are creating or expanding an article in which they have a conflict of interest with. Additionally, if the article does not meet Wikipedia's notability or claim of significance guidelines, it will get deleted - either through Wikipedia's speedy deletion process, or Wikipedia's proposed deletion or articles for deletion processes.
Instead, you should contribute to other subjects and topic areas that interest you, but where no conflict of interest will become a distraction to your decisions and your writing. If your company is indeed notable and should definitely have its own Wikipedia article, another editor will certainly create and expand that article without a doubt. Don't waste your time! If you have any more questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:37, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sad news

Hello, I am very sorry to report that Eagleash has passed away. Since your talk page was one of his most edited pages, I thought I should let you know. Graham87 12:50, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Graham87 - Awwww.......... That's... extremely sad news to hear. Wikipedia, as well as the Wikimedia project has a whole, has lost both a very good contributor and a very good person. Obviously, my thoughts are with his friends and family and those who were close to him. I hope they properly mourn in a healthy way, and I really do hope that they know that (as I feel) that it was a privilege to know him and work along his side. Thank you for letting me know; I appreciate it a lot. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:35, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can I nominate this [1] for deletion?

I don't think it is notable, but my failed previous afds scared me away from directly nominating it, do you have any advice on this? Grandmaster Huon (talk) 18:03, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Grandmaster Huon - My initial reaction and the quick searches I made online tell me that this article subject is notable and would be a bad candidate to consider for deletion. You're improving already by asking questions when you're unsure instead of just making assumptions - keep that up for sure, and thank you for asking. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:17, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What about this [2] or this [3] Grandmaster Huon (talk) 18:32, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I initially nominated my previous articles for deletion because of this [4] Grandmaster Huon (talk) 18:34, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I was being bold here [5] see the issue box,

Was I being helpful there? Grandmaster Huon (talk) 18:39, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Grandmaster Huon - I understand that you're trying to be helpful, but I'm afraid that I don't agree with what you tagged on this article as needing improvement.
 • "This article may need to be rewritten to comply with Wikipedia's quality standards." Why? What exactly is not formatted correctly in regards to Wikipedia's manual of style? I took a cursory look at the article, its structure, and its formatting. I didn't see an issue at all.
 • "This article may have too many section headers dividing up its content." No, it really doesn't. The article separates its content using appropriate section headers to summarize what that section is about. Why do you think there are too many? I really don't know how or why you came to that conclusion.
 • "This article may be too long to read and navigate comfortably." I also disagree. The article subject is about a fictional character that's featured in numerous animated series, comics, books, movies, and other media. The size of this article seems completely appropriate given the amount of information that's available to provide on this subject.
 • "This article consists almost entirely of a plot summary. It should be expanded to provide more balanced coverage that includes real-world context." This issue is for articles that are covering a subject about a movie, book, TV series, etc. This article is covering the fictional character and makes mention of where this character is featured, but that's completely appropriate. This information aside, I can already tell you by just looking at the table of contents for the article that it absolutely does not "almost entirely of a plot summary."
 • "This article describes a work or element of fiction in a primarily in-universe style." Where? Show me exactly where in the article you see this occurring at. Because I don't see that at all.
 • "This article's plot summary may be too long or excessively detailed." Again, this is an article about the fictional character, not a film, movie, book, episode of a TV show, or other media. What "plot summary" are you talking about?
I think you need to go back and carefully re-read all of the guidelines that are linked within each improvement tag you added. It's clear that you don't have enough experience yet to make these kind of judgement calls. You'll get there someday, but it's not there right now. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:03, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request for rollback permissions

Hello there! NotAGenious (talk) 17:15, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I sent it. Anyways, I saw you on this list, and thought I'd give it a go. I've been doing counter-vandalism work for a few weeks, and it has been great to be able to help that way. Especially interested on trying Wikipedia:SWViewer, as I thought that could make my work more efficient. I use Twinkle. I hope this doesn't come too soon, as I don't have that many mainspace edits, but I've read all the guidelines and I do believe that I understand the use of rollback and the difference between edits of good and bad faith.
Thank you for your time! NotAGenious (talk) 17:22, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
NotAGenious - I would normally say that your tenure is a bit short and that your contributions haven't spanned enough time for me to adequately gauge your fitness for being granted the user rights. However, from the contributions that you do have, my spot-checking shows that you're properly identifying vandalism, reverting the right edits, and leaving adequate user talk page warnings. If you kept up the good work and continued with consistent participation in reverting disruption like you're doing, I don't think you'd have a problem at all being granted rollback. With this in mind, I'm going to grant you the permissions, but with an expiration of one month. When it expires, come back and let me know. I'll take a look and make sure that you're using rollback within Wikipedia's policies, and I'll grant them to you permanently. Please make sure that you review the message I left on your talk page that details the proper use of rollback, and when you're not allowed to use it. Other than that, good luck! Let me know if you run into any questions or need help with anything. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:32, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Lookingforjustice2 (20:05, 3 August 2023)

Hello,

First time here. I appreciate your help. How do I start a new page on a new person? --Lookingforjustice2 (talk) 20:05, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lookingforjustice2! Welcome to Wikipedia! Before you start down that pathway, I would go through Wikipedia's getting started page and Wikipedia's new user tutorial. They will be very helpful to you; the tutorial will provide you with step-by-step walkthroughs with performing essential and basic tasks, collaboration with other editors, and with site navigation. When you're ready, visit Wikipedia's my first article page to get started. This page will help you with verifying important information, tasks, and references before you begin writing the article you wish. It makes sure that you don't spend a significant amount of your effort and time creating this article just to later discover that it doesn't meet Wikipedia's requirements and is deleted. It takes at least 5+ hours of total time to write everything and put together a complete first "draft" before you begin revising, improving, and adding more content to it. Use the resources on that page to make 100% sure that the article subject you wish to write about is notable and should have its own article. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to help. Cheers and good luck to you! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:20, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please self-revert your unblock of Panda619

Hi, Oshwah,

Per WP:RAAA, administrative actions should not be reversed without good cause, careful thought, and (if likely to be objected to), where the administrator is presently available, a brief discussion with the administrator whose action is challenged. You've just unblocked Panda619 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) without any on-wiki discussion, based, as far as I can tell, on a misunderstanding of the full circumstances of what they were blocked for, and without complying with the terms of RAAA.

In the immediate aftermath of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, they replaced her article with an image of Chief Keef blowing smoke, accompanied by the words "RIP Bozo". This is a meme meaning, essentially, "I'm glad you're dead". I wouldn't expect the average admin to know that—I didn't at the time—but I don't understand how you got to the point of both unblocking them and even unrevdelling the diff without actually looking up the phrase "RIP Bozo", or checking in with a single other admin, such as El_C, the blocking admin; Yamla, GeneralNotability, or Ritchie333, who declined unblock requests, with Richie revoking TPA for this second BLP/BDP violation; Girth Summit, who warned and opposed an unblock; JJMC89, who declined a UTRS unblock request and tempbanned them from UTRS; or even Floquenbeam, who openly considered a reduction to pageblock and then decided it was inappropriate to do unilaterally.

At no point in these appeals has Panda619 ever apologized for what they did. A while after they lost TPA, I told them in #wikipedia-en-unblock connect (where they've now convinced you to unblock, with no other admins commenting) that they were not going to be unblocked, because in appeal after appeal they persisted in a narrative of "I did nothing wrong, but I won't do it again", without explaining why we should trust the latter. Even in their comments in -en-unblock, they say (noting that -en-unblock is a non-private channel per its topic)

as you know she died, I was happy, I am Indian, who reads lot of history and politics, I assume you know about British empire's atrocities, so at spur of moment I did that as a joke

This 1) should have served to make you reconsider your impression that this was "only" vandalism, not a BLP violation, since they clearly perceive it as having been a comment on her death, and 2) is in no way an apology, nor an indication that they won't do the same in the future.

So now the arc of this is that they introduced a serious BLP/BDP violation on an article that was getting some of the highest views any article ever has, still seem to feel that doing so was a reasonable expression of their political frustration, and have now been rewarded with an unblock despite showing no remorse.

This is extremely reckless adminning, and if I sound pissed here it's because I am. Please immediately reblock and re-revdel, and take the matter to AN for a community unblock request if you wish.

For the full context of those not in the channel, here is the full -en-unblock discussion (again, non-private per channel rules)

11:07 AM O<•Oshwah> One moment.
11:08 AM Okay, let's talk about it. What happened here? You were caught using more than one account, then two years later blocked twice for BLP violations. That's pretty serious. ;p;
11:08 AM lol*
11:11 AM G<Guest10> Guest48 that different account usage was not meant to abuse wikipedia, i stopped after an admin said its not allowed, I just wanted different accounts for different topics,
11:11 AM and
11:11 AM BLP violation block was once, i don't know why it says twice and it is indeed serious, I should not have done that
11:11 AM O<•Oshwah> What were the other accounts usernames?
11:12 AM Just to check their contributions.
11:12 AM G<Guest10> Guest48 i dont even remember, ill check and say

11:15 AM Guest10: Well, I don't see incivility or abuse being posted when you were responding on your user talk page.
11:15 AM You were having a reasonable debate IMO.

11:18 AM G<Guest10> Guest48 yeah i did some stuff, i still understand wikipedia is not the place for it
11:18 AM no, its just in 2019, i wanted to create two accounts for history/politics and anime stuff
11:18 AM and then forgot one of the password
11:18 AM another account was XXX619
11:18 AM I explained about it here and an admin unblocked my after agreeing to use one account
11:18 AM https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Panda619/Archive_1#Blocked
11:19 AM O<•Oshwah> Yeah I saw that. No worries.
11:20 AM Guest10: So what about this edit to Elizabeth II where you replaced the page with an image of Chief Keef and with "RIP" content underneath?
11:20 AM Looking at this diff, I don't think this is a "serious BLP violation" as said when the edit was removed.
11:20 AM But I'm calling this vandalism.
11:21 AM G<Guest10> Guest48 well due to recent death, i guess it was considered as such
11:22 AM O<•Oshwah> It didn't state anything against her, and the edit you made was unrelated to her. This is not a BLP violation, but it is absolutely disruptive.
11:22 AM Can you elaborate on this edit? What happened? Why?
11:27 AM Guest10: ^
11:28 AM G<Guest10> Guest48 as you know she died, I was happy, I am Indian, who reads lot of history and politics, I assume you know about British empire's atrocities,
11:28 AM so at spur of moment I did that as a joke, it was there for a second I think, then one editor gave me vandalism warning and then lot admins came in and was talking how severe it was and such, and got blocked instantly, I tried appealing, they were still like, nope and I tried and here and UTRS I think, everywhere, nothing worked, one of the admin
11:28 AM told me to wait for 6 months for standard offer, so I did for more than that, I have been missing contributing Wikipedia and I search some topic, Wikipedia doesn't have page on it and I wanted to create it but cannot, this happened too many times, so I thought of appealing again
11:28 AM O<•Oshwah> Okay.
11:30 AM Here's my observation so far: I think you've been honest and I do think that you want to return. Your userpage shows that with userboxes and edits. Many pure abusers will only copy a userpage from someone else in order to throw us off, or not even bother create one.
11:30 AM I'm going to unblock you, but with some stipulations and warnings:
11:31 AM 1. None of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Panda619&diff=prev&oldid=1107301281
11:31 AM That's adding fuel to the fire. Discuss content, not people.
11:31 AM And don't antagonize.
11:31 AM 2. No more of those "joke" edits.
11:32 AM You know better, and that's not acceptable - I obviously shouldn't have to tell you that.
11:32 AM Be civil, follow policy, and KEEP YOUR DAMN NOSE CLEAN! :-)
11:32 AM Okay?

I'm not party to the discussion that led to the unblock, but I do not think this is an appropriate action if performed unilaterally. I think this should have been discussed with the blocking admin at a minimum, and ideally gone to AN for community input. Based on what Tamzin has set out, I understand that they still feel that trolling about a recently deceased woman's death was not something they should have been blocked for; assuming that is the case, I strongly oppose this unblock, and urge you to revert that action and get input from others. We can't look past a flagrant BLP policy violation without some acknowledgement from the user if how inappropriate their conduct was. (FWIW, I say this as someone with no interest in the royal family, who would vote to get rid of them if we were ever given the choice. It's got nothing to do with her status, it's about the obviously disgusting conduct in mocking a recently deceased woman in article space. Girth Summit (blether) 18:12, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) Girth Summit - I absolutely agree that the behavior this user caused is absolutely unacceptable in any capacity or any way. I unblocked this user per WP:ROPE. If the user decides to go amok and cause havoc, the block button is simply a few clicks away. We're taught here to use sound and good judgement (of course), but that can extend anywhere. Please understand this: If I'm wrong with what I did, then I'm wrong - and I apologize for the decision I made and I will learn from this and improve. I'm sure that you know that. I'm not here to hurt anyone, and I think that you are a great person. I want to drive the spirit of Wikipedia and our mission - That's all. If someone comes back a year later to apologize and explain (off-wiki evidence that I'm happy to provide), fine. I don't understand what the alarming issue is here. This isn't a "911", which are things both you and I resolve and take care of regularly. Anyone is welcome to chime in, respond, and give their honest thoughts here - even if it disagrees 100% with what I did, or if anyone believes that I violated policy and should be taken to "court". :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:37, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think you should be taken to court, or even given a hard time - I'm sure you acted in good faith. Three admins have asked you to revert your unblock though - I only ask that you do that, and allow the community to consider an unblock, given the circumstances. Girth Summit (blether) 19:19, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
 Done. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:47, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Nothing further from me - if there is a community review of the situation, I'm content to let that go one way or the other without my input, provided this discussion is linked from there - I've already said what I think is needed before an unblock should be considered. Best wishes Girth Summit (blether) 20:56, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oshwah, next time you intend on overturning one of my blocks, I'd appreciate at least a courtesy note to that effect. Rather than it hapening as a consequence of some hidden discussion that I'm kept in the dark of, and where my view therefore is automatically discarded. Whether you value my input or not, it's still sort of expected, no? El_C 22:51, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
El C - I apologize, and no problem - I will. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:12, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notrealname1234 - What?!! Weird! What mobile device, browser, and OS version are you using with Wikipedia mobile? I'd like to start an emulator and take a look... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:42, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from DavidKinzieYork (19:49, 14 August 2023)

Hello, my friend David Kinzie York past away Sept. 10, 2019. He was a one hit wonder under the name Dave York, in the music business with his hit song "Beach Party". I have been wanting to create a Dave York page and tell his story. How do I go about this? --DavidKinzieYork (talk) 19:49, 14 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(by talk reader) @DavidKinzieYork: While I understand your sentiment towards your deceased friend, you are probably not the best person to write such an article, per WP:COI. That said, subjects of articles have to be notable and in this case, you would have to present independent, reliable sources to back up any claims you make. For our notability criterion for musicians you would need a URL to Billboard or the like showing when the song charted. It might be the case that you'll find more sourcing for the song than your friend, which would mean you ought to write about the former, rather than the latter. This is why we avoid writing on subjects where we are personally invested. I always point new editors to our reward board where you could offer a barnstar or other reward for a more experienced editor to take this on. Can you help me?

Hi Oshwah, I've seen you around before but I am not sure we've ever interacted. Anyway, this is WikiOriginal-9 but I lost my password and email. I intentionally made that stuff too hard to remember but it's coming back to bite me now since my computer blew up and I can't login anymore. How can I go about proving it's really me and getting my account back? I already tried asking Help:Logging in. If I have an old WP:VALIDALT that edited some of the same obscure pages as WikiOriginal-9, and I login and edit something, will that help prove it's me? 174.251.209.116 (talk) 14:56, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:21, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK thanks! 174.251.208.182 (talk) 12:40, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tbkoskie's study

I probably don't have time to participate in that (I was invited), but it sounds interesting. I see you're pursuing it ... if you need help with any of the grunt work, let me know. - Dank (push to talk) 16:44, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dank - I will, thank you! I haven't heard anything from that user yet, so we'll see if this even happens at all... ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:22, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. His materials say that he's presenting in some sense at the current Wikimania, but I'm not getting any hits on Wikimania pages on his name or username. - Dank (push to talk) 02:24, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dank - I didn't either! I think user is either is going to try and add a presentation to the conference at the very last minute, gave up and moved on, or... I don't know... maybe was just "pulling our legs"? Either way, I'll find out and let you know. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:45, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
