Educational TV in Singapore

Would anyone please confirm if there is a Educational TV broadcast in Singapore? I saw that on Prime 12 (now known as Suria) around August 1999 when my family went to Johor Bahru for school holidays. I also wondering if that broadcast still exist because this is a thought that I have been looking for since I was a small boy! Khairul hazim 01:55, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

A question about the anime Air Master...

In episode 14 of the aniem Air Master, there was a moment where after Kai hit her finishing move on Maki, there was a heartbeat sound when Maki was looking up and then she collapsed. Then Kaori went back into the ring and punched Maki, and then Maki was then awake. Did Maki suffer a near-death experience from Kai, finishing move or was she knocked out? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sirdrink13309622 (talkcontribs) 11:31, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

TV recommendations

I am looking for recommendations for good TV series from all around the world, *NOT* USA or UK (have already seen many of theirs) and not necessarily in English, from any decade. In particular I would like information about a) comedy sitcoms and b) dramas/thrillers that people have seen and enjoyed and could recommend to try out. Thanks for any info./tips, --AlexSuricata (talk) 01:05, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What about Canada? Would the English Canadian shows be too close to American or British for you? If not, then some recent good ones are Da Vinci's Inquest, This is Wonderland, and Corner Gas. Maybe you'd think they are just Canadian versions of CSI, Law and Order, and any random American sitcom...and maybe they are, but I think they are a lot better (like, Da Vinci's Inquest seems more believable than CSI, to me anyway). Sometimes Canadian shows are exciting because they are filmed in Toronto and wow, they go to places I go to. Is Flashpoint really a good show or I am just excited that they filmed an episode at Canada's Wonderland? Anyway, what about French Canadian shows? I'd have to think harder about that, but one that springs to mind is Dans une galaxie près de chez vous, which is a really bizarre Star Trek-satire-type-thing. Why was everyone whining about the story?

I watched 9 last night, and I had no clue why all the reviews were complaining about the story. I mean there were a few issues (How did the Scientist survive the chemical weapons?) but none of the reviews mentioned that. What was everybody's huge problem with the movie? Library Seraph (talk) 01:13, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the puppets were around when the chemical weapons were deployed, so the scientist had given up his life before all that. Now, I will give my opinion as a sample of what "everbody's huge problem" was (see also 9 (2009 film)#Critical). Personally, the whole idea of the souls being sent up to the clouds to make rain seemed kind of silly to me. My sister's objection was that the characters all seemed pretty flat and undeveloped. Otherwise, while the concept was intriguing, the movie was pretty short and the plot and action were pretty straightforward and unsuprising. —Akrabbimtalk 01:35, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't notice any of that- perhaps it's just a matter of personal taste. Thank you for your insights and I'm sorry it took me so long to reply, it's exams right now :( Library Seraph (talk) 15:56, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Background/elevator music

Hello! I did see Monty Python's The Meaning of Life a couple of days ago, and in the movie there are a certain elevator music/background music, which I am curious of what it is. In a youtube-cut you can hear a couple of seconds of the track (about 2:20 in into the snip): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkQhAVFxDFk&feature=related

If you have access to the film (some versions of it at least) there is a place where a longer part of the track is played, viz. when the middle age-couple is in the hotel room, and the lady is emptying her purse. Someone here knows who made this track, and what it is called? //94.255.226.57 (talk) 14:40, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have the disc on hand to check the credits, but this type of unrecognizable background music is usually part of a film's score, composed specifically for the film. The soundtrack page on IMDB doesn't call it out as a credited piece, which pretty much confirms this. Bloody Catholics, filling up the bloody world full of bloody people they can't afford to bloody feed. Comet Tuttle (talk) 16:27, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Monty Python made extensive use of the "public domain" collection of records in the BBC studios. It is highly likely that they needed elevator music and just went to the elevator music section of the library and grabbed a record. -- kainaw 16:37, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Kainaw's answer is more specific and therefore superior to mine. Comet Tuttle (talk) 18:59, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okey! The thing is that I think I recognize it from somewhere, and now I sort of got an answer! But it would still be nice to get hold of the music. Well, thank you very much for your help! //94.255.226.57 (talk) 23:01, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You most likely did hear it multiple times if you watched anything produced at the BBC. I find it very weird when I hear the trumpets of the King Arthur music from the Holy Grail used in other BBC shows. -- kainaw 23:05, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was looking at a webpage a few weeks ago and I can't find it at all now, no matter what I Google. Discount Broadway tickets

Is there a way to get discount Broadway tickets? I'm planning for West Side Story, April 1-3. I found some good discounts but they expire March 21. Bubba73 (Who's attacking me now?), 04:49, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

When I went to New York, I told the concierge at our hotel what we wanted to see a good two months before we got there. I called her back a couple times to ensure she knew I was serious. When we arrived, she had tickets for two of the three shows we wanted to see at half the price we would have paid if we got the tickets from the theater. I also found that the less popular shows have dirt cheap tickets for sale at a booth on Broadway. We really opted to go see David Letterman instead of another Broadway show - and we visited Rupert. His shop is much smaller than it appears on television. -- kainaw 06:47, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That is a good idea. We haven't gotten a hotel yet (and there are some hotel/ticket combos). Bubba73 (Who's attacking me now?), 07:29, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This won't directly help you, but Chicago has something called "Hot Tix" which sells discounted tickets for Chicago stage plays. I wonder if New York has something similar? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots11:31, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are several discount TKTS booths in New York City. See http://www.tdf.org/TDF_ServicePage.aspx?id=56 67.51.38.51 (talk) 17:12, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but that only has tickets the day of the performance (or the day before for matinees). We have a specific show we want to see so we can't take a chance on getting a ticket once we get there. Bubba73 (Who's attacking me now?), 17:19, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

While useful in most cases, in this case GameFAQs had no reviews or walkthroughs. How odd. Gamewinners has none either. in fact, my quick search on Google finds no walkthroughs at all. I asked my six-year-old son, who has completed this game. This is what he said: go Wildvine and pull down the rings. This causes the area around Ghostfreak to light up and then you can defeat him. This goes on for three rounds. I pass this information on for what it is worth. Once you've done that you fall into a basement and then you have this puzzle where you have to move statues around and change the direction of the light. Wow, gaming online? When did they make that?

I've never really done gaming online. That was all supposed to change with the purchase of an Xbox 360. I've set everything up, played hours of games, connected it to the Internet, and set up an Xbox Live account. But one thing boggles my mind; every time I search for people online, I find no one.

Which leaves me to this question that I'm unsure about; can you play over Xbox Live with people you don't know? Can it not go "here's seven random people you don't know; Survivors or Infected?" Several people I've asked say yes, but not with experience, and my multiple (but not a great many) attempts say no. What's the word?--The Ninth Bright Shiner 02:52, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, certainly. The frequency of random opponents appearing to play against you depends entirely on the game you are choosing to play. If you're trying to find a matchup while playing one of the older Xbox Live Arcade games, for example, you could wait multiple hours without a single hit; whereas if you choose Modern Warfare 2 or Halo 3 then you'll find matches right away, against random people you don't have to know. Comet Tuttle (talk) 05:35, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Assuming you are playing Left 4 Dead 2 (as your pipe suggests) you shouldn't have any problem either. I would suggest verifying that you actually have a connection to the internet through your xbox (try accessing something else online that proves it), and then contacting Microsoft Xbox Live customer support. —Akrabbimtalk 13:33, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How to convert Black & white movie to colour format movie ???

Hi.Anybody knows How to convert Black & white movie to colour format movie ??? Please let me know the site i can download free sofware. Thanks Said Nazar —Preceding unsigned comment added by Said Nazar (talkcontribs) 08:55, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You can't. But see film colorization and colour recovery.--Shantavira|feed me 10:42, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think Said means to convert the file format of a digital movie which is encoded in B&W to a color encoding (without changing anything about how it looks when you play it). And I don't know how. Staecker (talk) 13:36, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Back in the 1960s in the UK you could get a "convertor" for b/w televisions which consisted of a transparent screen that you put in front of your TV. It had, I think, a blue tint at the top, merging to a green tint in the middle, and, a red/brown tint at the bottom. I've no idea what they were called or whether you can pick them up on eBay, but that might be your best bet.--Shantavira|feed me 10:42, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Out of curiosity, Shantavira, what was the purpose of this screen? To see black and white movies that are tinted blue, green, and red at the top, middle, and bottom? I don't understand that at all. If they were widespread there ought to be a Wikipedia article about them. Comet Tuttle (talk) 18:25, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I assume it was like the ones here in the U.S. at the time. There was two parts. One went between the antenna and TV. It saturated the B&W signal with color brightness for Red, then Green, then Blue on each frame of video (from black bar to black bar). In front of the TV, a color wheel spun in sync with the converter on the back. When the red saturation was showing, a red disk was in front of the TV. When the blue saturation was showing, a blue disk was in front of the TV. The same for green. The result was a slightly blurry color picture off a B&W television. -- kainaw 18:31, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also see Homemade Color Converters. Pepso2 (talk) 19:19, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There is not, as far as I know a "Black and white" format for digitally encoded movies. If your movie is in B&W then it's probably got the red, green and blue pixel values all set the same, which make it look black-and-white. There is no way to recover the colour information. DJ Clayworth (talk) 23:20, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Vaguely related, check out the article on Technicolor, which uses (or used) black and white film and color filters to simulate color filming. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots05:10, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Big City Rock/The Remainders

I just saw that Big City Rock, a band I really like had personnel changes. But I am still pretty confused. I would like to know which people were in the band when they released their full album, (the most recent one with ten songs on it). Also, does this mean Big City Rock is done and the Remainders are just a name change? It's just a bit strange to me because I really liked them and don't know who is where now. 134.126.192.188 (talk) 18:03, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As for who was in the band when the album was released, the B&N page for the album lists credits if you click the "Details and Credits" tab:
Performance Credits
Big City Rock Primary Artist
Nate Bott Guitar, Vocals
Frank Staniszewski Keyboards, Vocals
Timothy Resudek Bass
Kaumyar Drums
This isn't a complete guarantee, of course; they could have left someone out of the credits out of anger, or whatever, but I think that's really rare. Comet Tuttle (talk) 18:21, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay thank you, now that Ive seen their facebook page this helps. It looks like they just changed the bassist and the name to the Remainders. Good, hopefully the sound will be the same then. 134.126.192.188 (talk) 00:51, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I vaguely recall reading about some place in Europe that had begun playing the longest composition in history, where each individual note on a giant organ would last many days (months?) at a time? and that the organ wasn't even close to finished yet, but it wouldn't matter because certain pipes weren't scheduled for use for years to come? Can someone point me to the wikipedia article on that? There must be one... 218.25.32.210 (talk) 04:56, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And I thought *I* had too much time on my hands. The sermon at that service should have been given by Bob and Ray, with their "slow talkers" bit. But it occurs to me that the slowest possible tune could be any tune - just poise the piano player so that he/she is about to strike the first key - but never does. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots05:07, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That would be the slow version of "Anticipation". Clarityfiend (talk) 05:12, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Our article about Longplayer may be of interest. There is an link that you can actually listen live at any time. Cheers, 10draftsdeep (talk) 14:36, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like the correct answer here, though, is As Slow As Possible, which is linked from the aforementioned Longplayer. Kingsfold (talk) 18:28, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah Clarityfiend already said that in the first reply. You're forgiven though since the link isn't very obvious :) --Richardrj talk email 20:54, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wha ... does nobody use the hover function anymore? It really isn't necessary to actually click on a link to see where it's taking you. -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 20:58, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What if someone made a recording of "As Slow As Possible", and then played it at half speed? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots15:20, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Music Query

Does anyone know what this dance/techno music is here? Cheers! --KageTora - (影虎) (A word...?) 14:51, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds pretty generic to me... Not helping, I know :) TomorrowTime (talk) 17:06, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Arigatou, TT. You've given me the best answer so far.... :) --KageTora - (影虎) (A word...?) 22:28, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well it sounds like Adagio for Strings (Tiësto) is near the end. meltBanana 01:57, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thanks. I already new that one. It's the one that first comes on at the point in the video linked to..... --KageTora - (影虎) (A word...?) 11:42, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Who will host the Tonight Show when Jay Leno retires for good?

I just saw the story how Conan O'Brien's brief stint as host is soon to come to an end and Jay Leno is returning. Is part of O'Brien's severance package a clause that whenever Leno finally really retires, he (O'Brien), will be host again, or is the next future host left undecided? 20.137.18.50 (talk) 15:47, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The details of such legal contracts are usually confidential, but given the recent animus it's safe to say O'Brien and NBC don't have any plans to work together again. Beyond that your guess is as good as anyone's as to who would take the job (assuming the show still exists). It's clearly a high-profile and lucrative gig, so there will be no shortage of takers. -- Finlay McWalterTalk 17:18, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting idea. My money's on Regis Philbin. He would be a natural. Or maybe some young, rising star we don't know about yet. Johnny Carson was already an established star when he started doing Tonight, although he was still quite young. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:25, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Bugs, are you aware of the age of Regis Philbin? Comet Tuttle (talk) 22:31, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That could work against him, unless Leno gets canned around this time next year. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots00:26, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tom Green should make a bid. I have found his online talk show, Tom Green's House Tonight, occasionally superior to late night broadcast shows on at the same time. Pepso2 (talk) 17:25, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Old MTV show

Greetings fellow deskers. I am trying to remember the name of an old MTV talk/comedy show that aired sometime in the mid 1990's in the United States that featured a host that wore Buddy Holly styled glasses. The show was very quirky and somewhat unpredictable, featuring guests that were interviewed on a couch while random puppets popped up from behind and looked around. Many other funny or offbeat things occurred as well. I remember almost every show ending with a musical performance. The show also featured a girl that would announce the guests and musicians. I have looked at our article on List of programs broadcast by MTV with no success. Does anyone know the name of this show? I think it only aired for a year or two. thanks, 10draftsdeep (talk) 17:02, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't looked at the list, but the first show to come to mind is The Sifl and Olly Show, but that's just a guess based on there being puppets on the show. --OnoremDil 17:04, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That is not it. I saw that as well and remember that program,(that one featured puppets only as I recall) but it is not the one I am trying to find. But thanks. Our article states that it may be incomplete, so it is possible it is not listed there. So far Google yields no luck 10draftsdeep (talk) 17:39, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I found it! It was Oddville and we actually have an article for it, but it wasn't linked in the list. (But now it is!) 10draftsdeep (talk) 17:51, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

January 22

Could anyone tell me when the album is coming out in the United States? I have checked here, his home page, his other webpages...I can't find it anywhere. It was originally slated for a release in the US in early december; an old edit of the page linked to in the title said that and it was cited then. Having checked various music buying sites and stores, including Itunes and Amazon, it is safe to say it has not come out in the US. This is slightly bothersome, as I really like a few songs on the album. Any help is welcome. Thank you, The Reader who Writes (talk) 05:00, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps you can order the album directly from Mr. Hudson's official website: [3] It appears to have links for purchase. 10draftsdeep (talk) 14:54, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Broadway tickets

I'm shopping for tickets to West Side Story at the Palace Theater for April 1-3. The information says that there are three price levels. The cheap seats must be in the balcony, which according to Palace Theater has mostly seats with obstructed views. Therefore, I'm looking for tickets at the middle price. However, I can't find any available at the middle price - only the high and low prices. Is there a secret to getting these middle-priced tickets? Bubba73 (Who's attacking me now?), 17:33, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It might help if you told us which Palace Theater (or Theatre) you mean out of the long list in the page you've linked to. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 17:51, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops, on Broadway: Palace Theatre (Broadway). Bubba73 (Who's attacking me now?), 17:53, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You might try StubHub. It looks like there are tickets for the mezzanine available through there. It's a reseller site, so they will be slightly more expensive than buying direct, but I've used the service before and been happy with the results.152.132.9.130 (talk) 18:10, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
