Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

    References etc

I'm trying to respond directly to Ariconte's reply to my recent feedback but can only find this rather public avenue to do so. I'm sure that Ariconte has only my best interests at heart but, try as I may, I have almost no idea of what is meant in his reply. I get the feeling that the assumption is being made that I know something about editing. Despite having read the help pages, I am still ignorant of the elementary processes required to make an edit. What I trying to do is to make a few corrections to a previous edit (rejected for lack of a reference) and cite a reference (so that it doesn't get rejected again). Please help (if only to tell me how to contact Ariconte directly). Thanks Steve Ingham Inghams3 (talk) 04:34, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can usually contact an editor by leaving a note on their talk page. Arcinonte's is at User_talk:Ariconte. You can reply on your own talk page, and then place the {{talkback}} template on Ariconte's talk page, which will notify that user that a message is waiting for them. RudolfRed (talk) 04:46, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Have you read through the page Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners for help with putting references in articles? Also, your question regarding references has been answered several times in the past week or so. See above a few days back, and a few days before that. --Jayron32 04:47, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How do I add a poster to my page

What exactly is the article in question? I was unable to find an article here at Wikipedia about a film called Dark Alliance, The Movie or something similar. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 12:01, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A movie poster will probably be copyrighted so an autoconfirmed account is needed to upload it to the English Wikipedia. You can post a request at Wikipedia:Files for upload when the article is made. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:41, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Change logo/Image

    dear Sir/ Madam,

I want to delete/edit/update the logo, image and maps of the UNWTO page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Tourism_Organization Also, I need to add the acronym (UNWTO) next to the page´s title.

It does not give m edit options to neither.

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.61.20.30 (talk) 14:19, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article titles do not include acronyms; the latter can be (and usually are) mentioned in the first sentence of the lede. As to the logo, etc.: post a note to the talk page of the article, explaining what needs to be changed and providing reliable sources for the proposed changes. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:29, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
UNWTO is a redirect to World Tourism Organization so readers searching on the acronym will go directly to the article. See Wikipedia:Uploading images. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:07, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I need some help to create my first article

    Hey everyone,

I am a new user of wikipedia and it quites difficult for me to create my first page. I have read the rules which help to create a page, then i created a page. But it looks like what i did didnt respect those rules.

    Somebody help me please.

I assumke you are talking about Abnote europe which has been tagged for speedy deletion because of concernes that it is promoting an organisation. The promotional tone of the article comes across in phrases such as "ABnote Europe provides the very best technology for a range of applications ...", "ABnote Group is rapidly becoming the leader of yet another emerging category ..." and "our solution is easy to customize and fast to implement". In short, it sounds like a sales brochure. You need to rewrite the article so that it tells us the basic facts about the company, rather than opinions. You also need to provide reliable sources for the information in the article, and evidence that the organisation is sufficiently notable to merit an article in Wikipedia - read Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) to see our guidelines in this area. Making an infobox collapsible

I have tried unsuccessfully to make {{infobox D&D creature}} into a collapsible infobox, like {{Infobox video game}} which was locked with tabular formatting to allow the collapse. I don't believe that's a standard infobox option, but I would like to use the creature infobox on list pages and don't want to make the page overly long with full boxes, so collapsible ones make more sense. The configuration doesn't set the minthreadsleft parameter, so the bot is using its built-in default, five. Because there are only five threads on the page, it is leaving them all. Please change "Nimble storage" page title to "Nimble Storage"

    Hello,

My name is Michael Kieran, and I work in the Marketing department at Nimble Storage in San Jose, CA.

The current page for our company is titled "Nimble storage" with a lower-case "s" in the second word. However, the company name is actually "Nimble Storage" (both words with initial caps). I wasn't able to edit the page title. Is this something you can help with? Thanks so much, Michael

    User:Drajay1976

Hello, I use this user id Drajay1976 in Malayalam Wikpedia, Wikimedia Commons and other wikipedias. I am most active in Malayalam wikipedia.

I am unable to use the same id in English wikipedia because that was already taken. It is possible that I had created this id sometime back when I was a novice. I dont remember the password now. I have used the password retrieval system, but it seems that the email id linked to this account is not active anymore (frankly, I dont remember what ID it was). It will be a whole lot easier for me if I am allowed to use the same id in English Languate Wikipedia as well. Is there any way the ID can be realeased to me for global usage? - Drajay1976 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 106.77.247.173 (talk) 05:21, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Eliott Goblet

    Hi Guys,

When doing a google search of Elliot Goblet a photo comes up on the right of the page with a date of birth and other details and a Wikipedia link. As the date of birth is inaccurate due to Elliot Goblet being a fictional character therefore not having a date of birth. When I signed on to Wikipedia to fix this it doesn't come up on the actual page. How can I get rid of the date of birth please?

The Google search link is http://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&gs_nf=1&cp=8&gs_id=u&xhr=t&q=elliot+goblet&pf=p&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&oq=elliot+g&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=32cb1604ee9f5fb1&biw=1655&bih=799

    Persistent Vadalism

An unnamed user, 83.244.254.189, has twice deleted a link on Debbie van der Putten page. I have twice restored it. How do I report vandalism/get administrator intervention?Paradisepark (talk) 08:51, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism is the place to start, just follow the instructions there. You might also be interested in looking Wikipedia:Twinkle, a set of scripts that speeds up processes like reporting vandalism. Do remember the definitions of vandalism, though - it has to be intended to harm the project. --Shirt58 (talk) 09:04, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This is not what's usually referred to as persistent vandalism, and the IP in question does not have a history of vandalism either. The usual step at this point would be to post on their talk page and try to engage in a discussion.
I looked at the link in question. I would classify it as unreliable—it baldly states that its information is “a little Googling”, and gives no specifics. If Playboy actually published this, you should be able to find a better citation. If you can't, I think that's more than adequate reason to remove it. Kerfuffler (talk) 09:07, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Editing question re page title

I would appreciate help in making the following change:

Currently, there is a wiki page entitled "Buccaneer 18" and I would like to change it to simply Buccaneer or Buccaneer (dinghy) i.e. the name referenced to a dinghy sailboat catetgory.

I would appreciate any assistance that can be provided.

    Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Agbonner37 (talkcontribs) 15:59, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    See WP:MOVE for instructions. Kerfuffler (talk) 16:03, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A move to "Buccaneer" will not be possible, as there is already an article Buccaneer, about pirates. But a move to "Buccaneer_(dinghy)" should be possible. Maproom (talk) 17:39, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to all. I will move the page to 'Buccaneer_(dinghy)' but will need to wait a day or two for the four day qualification. I will check back early next week and make the change then. Basically, the name for the boat does not and never has included the number 18 other than by some users in the recent past. Also, it is interesting that when you enter simply Buccaneer in the search line for wikipedia, the option of "Buccaneer 18" is not one of the options in the dropdown menue since, i suppose, it is in the server only as the complete string. Thus, fixing this to be simply the original name followed by the category of dinghy or sailboat should be an appropriate fix. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Agbonner37 (talkcontribs) 18:45, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Since the article is deleted, I can't see what the claim was. But as a general note, articles are usually deleted because they are uninformative, about non-notable topics, or contain blatantly false information. thumbtime=
    thumbtime=
It actually said "thumbtime=" as the image to the right (if you have Navigation popups enabled then it may hide the mouseover). It affected all pages using {{Infobox historical event}} without a Thumb_Time parameter. I have fixed the infobox.[5] It wasn't elegant to duplicate most of the image code but I couldn't find another way. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:38, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you mean. This is Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Science is one of our around four million articles. You are free to read all of them. If you want to do something other than read then please clarify. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:44, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

List of Victoria Cross Holders - Missing Recipient

The following person is missing from the Scottish list of Victoria Cross holders although his details are held in Wikipedia.

    His details are:

    • Matthew Fontaine Maury Meiklejohn – 1899; Elandslaagte, South Africa

Thank You — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.97.31.225 (talk) 01:40, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Although he served in the Gordon Highlanders, I can see no evidence that he was Scottish. He was born in Clapham. If you can find any references that identify him as such, you can add him to List of Scottish Victoria Cross recipients. Rojomoke (talk) 05:33, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any way to search for articles that full into more than one category? In my case, I want to search for articles that fall into both Category:Chinese emigrants to the United States and Category:Lawyers. This would be a quite powerful tool. Center my new barnstar

How ever much I try, I fail in putting my new barnstar (Socratic, at the bottom) in the middle of my userpage (horizontally, that is). I have tried putting: align="center" in all kind of places, but it just turns out wrong. How to fix this? Lova Falk talk 09:39, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I added 'Association of Member-Directed Pension Schemes'. Source: www.ampsonline.co.uk . I will try to create a stub for it.

I think it is appropriate to create a stub for this organisation. Do you agree? I hoped to find independent information about it on Wikipedia and maybe others do too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ianxmckay (talkcontribs) 10:29, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You'll need an independent, secondary source. If ampsonline.co.uk is the only source, then it's going to be difficult to justify inclusion. --Robert Keiden (talk) 00:41, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Pages added to categories

How do I find out what pages were added to the categories that are on my watchlist? I have tried to used User:Ais523/catwatch.js, but it didn't seem to work. Allen (Morriswa) (talk) 12:41, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have made some fixes to your WatchedCategories.js file: it was missing an opening quotation mark in one place, and a closing quotation mark and comma in another. Hopefully this will make the script operational (you will need to bypass your cache for it to have a possibility of working).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:02, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the corrections. Where do I go to see the results of the script? On my watchlist, I see nothing different. Thanks for your help. Allen (Morriswa) (talk) 18:57, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    sandbox

    Hi,

I wrote an article and moved it to live wiki, and now when I want to use the sandbox again, I see that the article is still in the sandbox too. Do I erase it? how can I use the sandbox again? thanks. Meitalklachuk (talk) 19:30, 8 September 2012 (UTC)meitalklachukMeitalklachuk (talk) 19:30, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User:Meitalklachuk/sandbox was left as a redirect to the article when it was moved. I've taken out the redirect, so the sandbox is now available to edit again. Yunshui  20:01, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Where to open a debate

I wish to open a debate on the issue of articles concerning criminal acts as I feel there are important issues to be addressed with regard to these. Where would be the appropriate place to do that? I've mentioned it at Wikipedia:Notability (events), but wasn't sure if that is the correct page. Cheers Paul MacDermott (talk) 20:27, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Read your post at Notability, not sure if these are perfect but checking at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Crime_and_Criminal_Biography and Template_talk:WikiProject_Crime might be a start. Marketdiamond (talk) 23:21, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

correcting a problem with a source citation

hi. a question was raised about a source citation for a photograph that i uploaded to wikicommons. [6]

I hope to be using this (and five others) as documentation for a submission to wikipedia [7]

I updated the source information as best as I could - and i have looked at many FAQ and other help locations - but i guess i need some advice as to whether i'm on the right track with this. There are no citations on the plaques themselves and quite literally there is pretty close to zero information anywhere about the trail, the monument, or the information signs. Let me know if there is anything i can do to make this better. thanks bill polk Abearfellow (talk) 20:45, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK. The immediate problem is that you've uploaded images without saying where you got them from (I'm assuming you took them yourself). That's why they are being queried. Normally this could be fixed with little difficulty - just state the source (self-made) and license accordingly. But there are further questions, because what you've done is make high-resolution photos of some text and images which may or may not themselves be copyright-protected. The specialists at our media copyright help desk are the best people to help, and I think you need to ask about this over there.
I see you made the images to use as a source for your draft article. Did you know that there's nothing to stop you citing these signs as sources anyway? Wikipedia doesn't even demand that written sources for articles are available to view online, let alone uploaded in image form to a Wikimedia project, so you don't actually need to have the photos of the text available. I also see that you're reproducing the text of the signs verbatim in the text of your draft article. This is not necessary at all, and in fact may be another copyright violation. I suspect your submission will be declined when it is reviewed, for this reason if for no other. What I would suggest is that you remove all the verbatim copy from the article, incorporating the important information within the text but in your own words, and citing it to the signage at appropriate points in the text; something like <ref>National Forest Service information signs displayed along Brow Monument Trail</ref> might work. You should also try to find some other written sources on the subject to support your article. Feel free to ask again if you need more help, and good luck with the article. - Karenjc 22:36, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Admin templates

Hi there. Where can I find a list/page of admin templates for things like speedy deletions and block appeals? Thanks. --Voidywordy (talk) 23:09, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Administrators are editors who have been granted the technical ability to perform certain special actions, for example blocking users. You are not an admin so your post [8] claiming to block a user does not make sense. Please don't pretend to be an admin. Admins are appointed at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship. Patricia schultz page

I was looking for a page about patricia schultz, and there was one, but when I clicked it, it redirected me to 1000 places to see before you die. Is there any way I can get to the patricia schultz page without redirection? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.232.98.214 (talk) 01:31, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately we only have an article for the book, and there is no separate page for the author. The redirection is there, so that searching for name, will find the closest thing available. If you would like to see an article on the author herself, the best thing to do is covered in here: WP:SOFIXIT. --Robert Keiden (talk) 01:39, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
