The King's Speech

Since the FAC for the film didn't work out, should we nominate it for A-class then? Thanks. Guy546(Talk) 17:22, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I think it is at that level at least. There was opposition, just not a sufficient consensus that it met FA. For a film article there is a good amount of real cinematic detail there. Go ahead and do it on the talk page, I haven't the heart to nominate it myself, but I'll be there to answer any questions. Go for it! --Ktlynch (talk) 01:03, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I just did it. Best, --Ktlynch (talk) 13:45, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

THC FAC

Hi there, thanks for your comments on the featured article review, I have replied to your comments as have some other editors and it would be cool if you could respond when you get the chance. cya Coolug (talk) 20:00, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know that a couple of editors have asked that you provide diffs to support your claim that their support for promotion "derives from the disgusting and obscene nature of the article's subject matter". Failing that they'd like you to withdraw the claim as they seem to find it a little rude and insulting. Coolug (talk) 14:10, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I saw the responses on FAC, and will respond in kind. I don't know what kind of diff might be possible to support such a claim, I posited it as a possibility, I didn't accuse any individual of it. Be assured that I was not trying to insult anyone, rather surprised that this article had seemed to gather so much support at review compared to other film ones. Best, --Ktlynch (talk) 18:35, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help in copy-editing The Beatles in India. Even 'minor' improvements are worthwhile, and some of yours weren't minor at all. After you edited it I made a few more changes, and moved some sentences for better flow.[1] I hope I haven't ruined it! ;) I'm going to double check some of the references, and will nominate it for FAC soon. Your contributions will help the article qualify.   Will Beback  talk  21:47, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Update on courses and ambassador needs

Hello, Ambassadors!

I wanted to give you one last update on where we are this term, before my role as Online Facilitator wraps up at the end of this week. Already, there are over 800 students in U.S. classes who have signed up on course pages this term. About 40 classes are active, and we're expecting that many more again once all the classes are up and running.

On a personal note, it's been a huge honor to work with so many great Wikipedians over the last 15 months. Thanks so much to everyone who jumped in and decided to give the ambassador concept a try, and double thanks those of you who were involved early on. Your ideas and insights and enthusiasm have been the foundation of the program, and they will be the keys the future of the program.

Courses looking for Online Ambassadors

Still waiting to get involved with a class this term, or ready to take on more? We have seven classes that are already active and need OA support, and eleven more that have course pages started but don't have active students yet. Please consider joining one or more of these pods!

Active courses that really need Online Ambassadors:

September barnstars

Copy Editor's Barnstar
I award you this Copy Editor's Barnstar for insisting on clear, comprehensible, and grammatically correct articles. This barnstar is awarded to Ktlynch for copy editing articles totalling over 40,000 words during the GOCE September copy edit drive. Thank you very much for your strong efforts!- Dianna (talk)

Leaderboard Award—5k articles—4th Place (tied)

Body of Lies move

Hello, regarding Body of Lies (film), do you think it should be the primary topic? I requested a move a few years ago that did not succeed, but reviewing all the "Body of Lies" articles, it seems that per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and based on the article traffic statistics, the film is the most sought-for. Let me know if you feel strongly either way or not at all. Erik (talk | contribs) 21:43, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Erik, thanks for getting in touch. I don't have strong feelings about it, the two titles clearly distinguish the works as they are, but you could be right based on my reading of the policy.

Muchas Gracias

Thank you for your kind words. Perhaps you are getting the last word on the parenthesis issue, which would be a fine place to end it. --Ring Cinema (talk) 15:27, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

De nada, Amigo! I see he retracted it in the end, I don't think it was intended to be overly malicious, the two of them actually have respectable editing histories. Probably just a silly Sunday off-the-cuff jibe. Either way I wouldn't take it to heart. Best, --Ktlynch (talk) 15:54, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Inception

Your draft is looking good - I only don't know if Origins is really for a Themes section (after all, we need Writing in the production one). Looking forward to further expansions of it! igordebraga 03:37, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was going to rewrite some of Origins and seperate the analytical material from the practical side. "Development" crosses over with the writing stage as I see it. Don't worry for the moment anyway, I'm going to give it a bash now. Best, --Ktlynch (talk) 10:13, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I also just copy-pasted those sections to have them in my sandbox for reference while drafting. Best, --Ktlynch (talk) 10:35, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Kevin, I am hoping you can look at a page that myself and another University of Toronto classmate made changes to: Private Good. The site first contained very few references, and very little info. We have both made some some positive changes (I hope), but I don't think those that originally made up the page and added changes have the page on their watchlist, so we have gotten no feedback on the discussion page. I was hoping you could provide some! Thanks! SADeGroot (talk) 14:20, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Copy-edit request

Hi, if you have time can you entertain my request to copyedit Connor (Angel)? I've been trying to make the article reach GA status but am doubtful about my prose quality and an experienced editor like you can surly help a lot with other fixes as well. GA review

Hello Ktlynch, I've been reviewing something for GA, at Talk:De Profundis (letter)/GA1. The history of that article reveals that you've done significant work on that article; the nominator, on the other hand, made only one. If you're interested, I think it won't take much work to pass GA status--please have a look and drop me a line if you like. King's Speech

Thanks for your message. I had of course forgotten Wikipedia's rule that people who actually know about things aren't allowed to make edits. I'll try to remember in future. Intelligent Mr Toad (talk) 23:23, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Err, you're welcome; I am not criticising what you wrote--you seem to be well informed on the subject. It's more an issue of finding a criterion for conclusion, the section used to be very long, people wanted to list all sorts of minor details. How do we decide what to include? Wikipedia is a tertiary source, and thus consists essentially of a summary of secondary sources, this is what we do here, no one said it was glamorous. If you want to advance your own critiques and analyses of the film then a blog might be a better place to do it. Best, --Ktlynch (talk) 10:25, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Status of GOCE copy edits

Hello Ktlynch. I'm checking through the GOCE requests page to see if everything is up to date, and just wanted to check the status of a couple that are marked by you as "working":

  • Thor (film): You marked as working and did some work on it around 8-9 November. I see it's a GA. Can I assume this is completed, and remove it?
  • Bicholim conflict: similar question.

Thanks in advance. --Stfg (talk) 17:28, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Online Ambassador, Spring 2012

Hi, Ktlynch! As you may know, the Wikipedia Education Program has instilled a new set of standards that courses must meet to officially join the program for the semester. As you can see, one of the requirements is that at least one ambassador or professor is a Wikipedian, as this should give students more access to helpful information about contributing to Wikipedia and creating good content. You are listed on the Online Ambassador page; are you still interested in remaining active this semester? Some of these classes will have to remove themselves from the program should they fail to meet these standards, but we would like to ensure that new students are receiving proper support during the editing process. Please let me know if you are still interested in mentoring these students this semester and/or visit the Online Ambassador talk page to select a course that still needs an Online Ambassador. Thank you! JMathewson (WMF) (talk) 00:39, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Charles Dickens' article.

Hi Ktlynch. I'm contacting highly respected literary editors as the Charles Dickens article has been of a low standard for a long period and edits unvetted. The one issue that needs to be dealt with in Talk:Charles_Dickens was one editors sweeping allegations. This subject in particular, has been in dire need of a collaboration and discussion among editors, and not one editors POV, so that consensus on the material is reached on talkpage, and the addition and wording scholarly. Thanks. Harrison 1979 (talk) 16:43, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I am assuming from the other comments on your page that you aren't normally as intellectually diffracted as you appear to have been with the convoluted change you made to the film, Midnight in Paris. Can you please change your edit to reflect whatever it was you were 'trying to say'? Thanks and Regards... Stevenmitchell (talk) 15:07, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking the time to write; this is what the French might call un message à caractère informatif. I think the article has been changed since in any case. Best, --Ktlynch (talk) 22:19, 13 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed: Jayne Mansfield

A mid-importance article supported by WikiProject Actors and Filmmakers that was reviewed by Version 1.0 Editorial Team and selected for Version 0.7 and subsequent release versions. The article has come a long way from a fan boy mish mash to a fair enough GA. Now is the time to take it to the next level. Currently it's going through another peer review. Serious help is needed to clean up the copy. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Aditya(talkcontribs) 10:19, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

DYK articles must be 1,500 characters long, not 1,500 words. If it was 1,500 words, most of the articles on the DYK nominations page would meet the length criteria. 1,500 words would be around the depth of a GA. See Wikipedia:Did you know/Supplementary guidelines. Could you review the DYK again? Thanks for your time.--SGCM (talk) 06:18, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, I misread. The article is ok on length and content then; I gave it a light copyedit. See my comments on the DYK nomination page for tightening up the hook. Best, --Ktlynch (talk) 06:34, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Frank Harris

Hiya. Why are you starting up this nationality debate again? Please read my reply to you 2 years ago about what being "British" meant at the time of Harris's birth. It was shorthand for being a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The term does not denote that being born on the island called Great Britain. In the 19th Century all people born in Ireland were British (as indeed were all those born in England, Scotland and Wales). He would have had a British passport. Please refrain from reverting changes on this until you have checked up on the facts.Daisyabigael (talk) 22:07, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, hah! Notice the way Great Britain and Ireland are distinct and separate! Historical and biographical sources do not describe people from this period as "British". Oftentimes they emphaise how the political situation led people to emphasise their Irishness. In short, you are incorrect to state that the United Kingdom and Great Britain are the same thing. GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

– Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.

Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

  1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
  2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
  3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

Hi Ktlynch, what is the status of your copy-edit of Jafar Panahi? WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members).

So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:

  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

Thanks

Hello K. I hope that you are well. Thanks for going through all the edits that someone from Amsterdam made on Wilde's article. I started to go through them last night but got bleary eyed and, since they were still editing, went to bed and figured I would deal with them today. It was a delight to see that you had taken care of things. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 15:02, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MD, great to hear from you too. A couple of his edits were reasonable, but many others were arbitrary: for instance, you had subtly approved the use of "disinterred" by simply adding from/to around it. You deserve your rest! Incidentally, have you seen Borgen (TV series)--it's not British TV though is very popular there when broadcast. Best, --Ktlynch (talk) 15:22, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No I haven't seen it - but I will keep a look out for it now. Several months ago I found this station on my cable. They have news programs from all over the world during the day. In the evening they feature murder mysteries from several countries in Europe. They have an ad for Borgen. Now they might have shown it already but they repeat things so I will keep my fingers crossed for that. They recently finished the first two seasons of Blood of the Vine and I enjoyed it so much that I bought the DVDs. The episode "Golden Wedding In Sauternes" includes a performance by Dominique Pinon that is one of the best I have seen by any actor. They started Annika Bengtzon: Crime Reporter a couple Saturdays ago and I am enjoying it as well. Thanks for the recommendation. MarnetteD | Talk 16:41, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Navboxes on author pages

Since you have over 100 edits at Oscar Wilde, you might want to participate in the discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Novels#Derivative_works_and_cultural_references_templates regarding including navigation boxes for adaptations of and related subjects to an authors works on the author's bio page.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 16:41, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Importance – sources

Thank you for your note, and for your kind comments about my additions. One is always nervous about adding to an existing article of high quality, and I'm relieved you don't disapprove. As to the sources, I've just checked and every one in the current list of cited sources is referred to in the references, though a few of them are mentioned only once. See, for instance, note 6, which cites ten sources: quite a lot, but right to cite them all, I think, given the statement they're backing up.

As one of the principal contributors to the article would you be interested in seeing it at FAC? I think it's not far short, and I have a few FAs to my name. I don't want to tread on any toes, but I think it would be good to seek promotion to the top level for the article. I have a few helpful additional notes (offline) from another FA contributor which I shall be looking to act on. Best wishes. (And it's Tim, I beg you, not Mr Riley, though how pleasing to see such scrupulous manners, if I may say so.) – Tim riley (talk) 14:11, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Later: in re removed and now restored section. Did I do that? Probably. So sorry. Incompetence, not malevolence. Tim riley (talk) 14:22, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Again, and thanks for your sharpish response. I admit to not having studied the reflist carefully, my apologies. I'll take another look. I would be very interested in collaborating on the article to FAC. I've gone to FAC once and was disappointed that the article failed to get consensus; the main complaint was that the film was too recent and thus more was sure to be published. (It's an A-class now). Would you like to start posting some ideas on the article's talkpage? I coming back from a wiki break and feel ready to make a push on some quality content. Finally, you are not at fault regarding the section, the history shows an IP blanked it in May and nobody caught it. Best, Ktlynch (talk) 15:48, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
