Query about "estimated annual readership" counter.

Dear Gilderien, On 30 August, 2013, you awarded Jamesx12345 the 'Quarter Million Award' and, in your message, you indicated that his article on James Clerk Maxwell had an "estimated annual readership of 451,150". At your convenience, please would you kindly let me know how you determined this estimate? Is there a facility in WP that returns such a value for any article? I am aware that WP articles have a stats page but I have not seen a field or button that returns an 'estimated annual readership' count, or a 'total readership count'. Thank you very much for your time and guidance with this, whenever convenient. With kind regards; Patrick. ツ Pdebee. (talk) 22:23, 20 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The number is, I believe, calculated by multiplying the 90-day total by four. Pretty crude, but using this tool currently gives 389944. I'm not sure how those numbers are calculated, but there are a number of reasons those figures could be inaccurate, not least that many people read the page for all of 5 seconds. But I digress... Jamesx12345 22:28, 20 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Jamesx12345; Thank you very much for your prompt reply. Your answer makes abundant sense; it's strange that WP doesn't provide better stats for yearly counters, since I imagine it must keep track of all the raw data anyway. It would be particularly useful to have, amongst all article stats, default counters for: 1) the number of annual 'reads-only' and 2) the number of annual 'edits', don't you think? That way, we could all easily gauge the two very different types of 'access' to any given article. In any case, many thanks for taking the time to answer my query. With kind regards; Patrick. ツ Pdebee. (talk) 22:53, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition. While it has been an excellent year, errors have opened up the judges' eyes to the need for a third judge, and it is with pleasure that we announce that experienced WikiCup participant Miyagawa will be acting as a judge from now on. We hope you will all join us in welcoming him to the team.

Next year's competition begins on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; it is open to all Wikipedians, new and old. Brainstorming and discussion remains open for how next year's competition will work, and straw polls will be opened by the judges soon. Those interested in friendly competition may also like to keep an eye on the stub contest, being organised by Casliber. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Portal peer review

Hello,

I have just closed a portal peer review that you had started because the review had went unedited for several months. As I'm sure you can tell, the portal peer review process is rather understaffed, and I apologize if you didn't get what you were looking for. If you are still interested in working with portals, either the one that you brought to PPR or another one, and are looking for advice, please don't hesitate to reach out to me personally by leaving a message on my talk page. I would be happy to help.

Huggle 3

Hey Gilderien! I am Petrb, one of core developers of Huggle, the antivandalism tool, which you are beta testing (according to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members#Beta_testers). I am happy to announce that Huggle 3 is ready for some testing. You can read more about it at WP:Huggle/Huggle3_Beta. Please keep in mind that this is a development version and it is not ready for regular use. That means you must:

  • Watch your contribs - when anything happens you didn't want, fix it and report a bug
  • Frequently checkout source code and build latest version, we change it a lot

If you find any problem with a feature that is supposed to work perfectly, please let us know. Some features are not ready yet, it is listed in known problems on Huggle3 beta page, you don't need to report these - we know it! So, that's it. Have fun testing and please let us know about any problems, either using bugzilla @ http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/ or #huggle connect. Please respond to my talk page, I am not going to watch your talk page. Thank you Petrb (talk) 10:57, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Thank you for the welcome-back and the offer to review the page I put up at DYK. :) Do you think it would be useful if I complete my mentorship with you? I get the feeling that in the past few weeks since I returned, I figured most of it out myself, but if you think it could be useful, I'd happily continue where we left off. (Or, if you generally have a final test for those you mentor, perhaps I could do that?)AddWittyNameHere (talk) 00:07, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you wish to continue the mentorship there are another five or so lessons, Deletion, Policies and consensus, Templates, Vandalism, and Working the 'pedia, followed by a final test (which I haven't written yet) - I think this would be useful but if you would rather I could test your knowledge with the super-hard test whenever :) P.S. I reviewed your article, I would have normally just made a couple of changes myself but it's considered bad form to approve an article you've edited really.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 00:24, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, and the plus of doing it this way is that I learn more from doing it myself than watching someone else do it. I agree on the points regarding the image and the hook, but I've checked the paraphrasing and feel that in nineteen out of the twenty-six flagged cases, it's not in fact paraphrasing, or unavoidable paraphrasing. However, I won't bore you with a huge wall of text when I already left such a wall over there. I'll think I'll continue with you mentoring me. Deletion seems to be no problem for me. I've tagged two pages for speedy deletion, which both were indeed speedy deleted (one attack page, one talk page without article/borderline attack page) and commented on one AfD where the outcome was exactly what I 'suggested'/'voted'/'argued' for. Policies and consensus could be useful, haven't really had to deal much with them, though I think I know most of the theory. Been spending a fair amount of time reverting vandalism and other disruptive edits, but more knowledge never hurts. Same for working with the 'pedia. Plus, if I know most of it as well as I suspect, it probably won't take me long, and if I don't know it as well as I suspect, it's a good thing I start it again, eh? AddWittyNameHere (talk) 02:13, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, sorry, I didn't mean that all the cases were close paraphrasing, just one or two, I should have probably mentioned that :p --Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 16:22, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh well, the crash-course "figure out what is or isn't too close paraphrasing and make solid arguments explaining why you feel so" no doubt will be useful at some point in the future. :P AddWittyNameHere (talk) 17:56, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

US State Challenge

Hi Gilderien. Regarding US State Challenge, do you want to move it to your space as we're clearing out some of the links from RBN? Just noticed British Historic County Challenge, too. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:56, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't had very much time to spend onwiki recently but I shall in the future so thank you it would be great if you could do this.--Gilderien Talk to me|List of good deeds 08:25, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Request for adoption

Hi Gilderien. I was wondering if you might be able to adopt me. I am a fairly new user looking to contribute more. I started by creating a page for a company that is notable in my sphere of research/learning PH Media Group but would like to do more. Could you please help me by providing some advice about the creation of pages because someone has questioned the NPOV on my only created page, so I would like to get a better handle on the process before creating more and get a feel for how I can make this page more neutral sounding. I would also be interested in joining your adoption school. Jenniferlever (talk) 14:01, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
