I've been a bit busy today, but I've had a few looks at the above (rather daunting!). On the back of your card I seem to have written Castle Museum for Wednesday (tomorrow). What time would be this be happening? I'll be swimming before lunch but could be around in the afternoon (I'll also be looking in at #25 Walmgate, see my suggestion to Bazonka). If a meeting doesn't fit tomorrow, we could have a chat at a later date. Best, GT

Il Prigioniero

Dallapiccola's Il Prigioniero was indeed first performed on a radio in 1949 (I know this), but it was written as a stage opera (e.g., see the score) and the score was completed by 1948. Could you please then explain why you undid my revisions? And what is actually "a radio opera", a kind of "a radio play"? Il Prigioniero is obviously not like this. --Pstupin (talk) 03:21, 8 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I know, of course, that you live in Yorkshire, but if you could find it in you to look at a peer review of Lancashire's Sir Neville it would be esteemed a favour. Bold Sir Brian Boulton has written most of the present text, with me as Sancho Panza, and we shall both be grateful for your thoughts at Wikipedia:Peer review/Neville Cardus/archive1. Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

  1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
  2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
  3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

L'assedio di Calais and Wexford 1988

Greetings G.T.: I know that you compiled a large portion (if not all) of the article about operas performed at Wexford, and so I wonder if you happen to have the programme from the 1988 L'assedio? I've been doing some major expansion on the Wiki article on that opera, and have made mention of the Wexford production.

As you may also know, English Touring Opera is planning to stage it from 2 March into May in ten locations, and I just received the stage director's notes and synopsis (although the latter is online) from the ETO people. James Conway is presenting it in two acts, and there is some historical justification for this, but I wonder if the Wexford production was done in the original three acts and if the notes in your programme indicate anything of interest for inclusion in the article.

I've found that with both my expansions of the Belisario article last autumn (which tied into a concert performance which I heard at the Barbican) and the one on Maria Stuarda which tied into the Met's worldwowide videocast, that there a significant increase in readership as evidenced by the stats on http://stats.grok.se/. In fact, at the Barbican, I noticed at least two people with copies of the article in their hands, and readership of Maria Stuarda had close to 8,000 "hits" on the day of the Met broadcast. Happily, I shall be in England during the last week of April and so shall see L'assedio in Buxton (before going on to Oberto in Milan).

All the best, Viva-Verdi (talk) 19:52, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for the reply. No hurry, of course, so 1 March is fine. Yes, if you do make it to Santa Fe again, you'll have to let me know. I'm typically here all summer as I do backstage tours regularly throughout the opera season. 2014 promises: (1) a new opera on Sun Yat-sen which was presented in Hong Kong last year, brief details of which can be seen here (to use your system!); (2) (word has it) La favorita. I usually attend the press conference announcement in April (unless it's when I'm in England, or Switzerland, or Italy this Spring!). BTW: seeing your list of countries lived in/spent the night in, I note that you mention Tanzania: I set up African history courses in two Dar es Salaam high schools from Jan 1966 to March 1968, as well as running the Dar Film Society for 18 months of that time. Viva-Verdi (talk) 01:52, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your response re: the Wexford production. I do have most of the details you mentioned already in the article, but it looks as though the Opera Rara version is the "standard one". Don't know if there is a critical edition: I'll ask Philip Gossett, whom I can now call a friend after hosting him in my home last summer as Maometto II was being rehearsed here in Santa Fe.

English Touring Opera sent me the the programme notes and synopsis for the upcoming L'assedios, and they are planning two acts with no act 3, no ballet, no King (but move him to act 1), no Queen. Am not sure about the added cabaletta done in Naples, but doubt it will be there since the burghers go off to their deaths....

Glad you enjoyed Naples: I've not been there since the 1960s. All the best, Viva-Verdi (talk) 01:00, 4 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion at WikiProject Opera

I'm writing to members of WikiProject Opera who have been active on the talk page over the last year. We currently have a proposal to add infoboxes about individual operas to their articles. As this would involve a fairly major change from our current practice, and lead to a potentially lengthy transition, it would be helpful to hear the views from as many project members as possible. The discussion is at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Opera#Opera infoboxes. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 09:07, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Blasphemy to try to lure you to the Royal Opera House for the wrong reasons, but on the off-chance, may I draw your attention to this forthcoming editathon at the ROH in June? Opera Project stuff

Hi GT, I'm writing to members who participated in the March 2013 discussions about the possibility of developing an opera infobox. We now have a reasonably stable and usable box with examples of how it would look in articles at Template:Infobox opera and a new discussion re its potential addition to the project's Article Guide as an option for opera articles. Hello. After much thorough searching around I've come to the conclusion that the WNO Midsummer Marriage production of 1976 you saw in Leeds was central to its performance history. May I ask you to add some more information from the programme you have of it? I've found the Jenifer and the Sosostris so far, and think it would be good to have the Mark, Bella, King Fisher etc. In fact I think I'll add a column on the cast list for this production. I have a mid-90s reissue of the 1970 recording; in the booklet essay this production is spoken of very warmly - I'm going to add that now, too almost-instinct 12:28, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for doing that. You're certainly right that the state I've got that page into right now is a long way short of Best Practice. But these days I appear to be a sluggish editor, and its only through wanting to get the information on display before the Proms performance that has goaded me into doing that little I have! Looking at the cast list and bearing in mind the problems of balance in the RAH I'm not expecting the Proms performance to be ideal, but I shall be very grateful for the opportunity to hear the work in the flesh (In 2005 I was insufficiently ROH-savvy to work out how to attend a performance) I've been listening to the 1970 recording again. The singing of Alberto Remedios and Raimund Herincx is especially striking. By the way the WNO programme claim of being the first production outside London is countered by the ref we have of the German premiere in 1973. Will dig around to try to find confirmation of that date almost-instinct 09:01, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Online ambassadors

GuillaumeTell, I was wondering if you would be willing to serve once more as online support for COMM 192 at the University of Southern Indiana as we continue to tackle bios, events and topics that have to do with the safety of journalists. You have done an excellent job in the past of advising students. So far my students have created accounts, enrolled in the course, established user pages, and posted messages on talk pages. They have each received an assignment (this semester they are working on subpages in my account). They are just beginning to format sources and find new sources from reference databases. They will be writing notability statements and filling in their infoboxes. And soon they will be writing their full articles with reliable sources and inline citations. This is the fourth iteration of the project, and every semester I have tried to perfect the process. The contributions of the ambassadors is essential, and if you have any suggestions on how we better utilize your resources and talents, please don't hesitate to let me know. We have 45 students this semester! Take a look at our course page. I hope you can and will join us again! Best, Crtew (talk) 15:38, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back

Thank you for being generous with your Wikipedia knowledge and skills and agreeing to once more serve as online ambassador! I didn't not teach the course last spring. So this is continuous service and I really appreciate it. Once you sign on to the course page, you'll notice that there will be a course tool in your top menu. This allows you to track any changes in your courses on Wikipedia. That's new since the last time we worked together. So far, I'm loving this tool. Crtew (talk) 00:41, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Judges(') Lodgings

Hallo GT, Is there any reason why Judges Lodgings, York isn't at Judges' Lodgings, York? I was about to move it on the basis of (a) grammar and (b) name used by current users on their website, but spotted that you'd edited it recently and thought I'd get back to you. I spend an interesting day on Saturday at the editathon at Judges' Lodgings, Lancaster. PamD 07:43, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Don Bucefalo rides again

Hi GuillaumeTell! Great to see you back! Best, Voceditenore (talk) 19:19, 16 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I'm rather rusty these days, but I'm trying to get back when I have time. Could you have a look at Don B - I'm not sure that I've got Casaglia's stuff right. Also, I've been dealing with Koanga's table of personnel etc., and need to add Casaglia and refs there. Wexford this year was a bit oh-ah; whether 2015 will be better (as well as Koanga, Guglielmo Ratcliff and (hurray!) Le pré aux clercs, whose articles both seem OK, but time Will Tell...) (...talking of whom, I've finally seen about 3/4 of the opera - Pountney & co in Birmingham - and I think that I've now clocked up 400 different staged operas, many of which I'll probably never want to see again). Hope you had a good time in Italy this year - I did, and was much taken by Lecce/Matera/Vieste, even Bari... --GuillaumeTell 18:43, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

Hello! Great to meet you on Sunday. I'd love to talk through what you might want to do with the York Museums Trust or other Yorkshire Museums. You can find out more about what I'm up to on the Yorkshire Network Project pages. You might also like to look through YMT's online collection or the image categories the museums that have already been uploaded:

The options for working together are pretty much endless! I don't think I have any opera-related material on hand but it'd be great to collaborate on Yorkshire History. What do you think? PatHadley (talk) 12:43, 13 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

And Hello again!

I've been a bit busy today, but I've had a few looks at the above (rather daunting!). On the back of your card I seem to have written Castle Museum for Wednesday (tomorrow). What time would be this be happening? I'll be swimming before lunch but could be around in the afternoon (I'll also be looking in at #25 Walmgate, see my suggestion on Bazonka's page). If a meeting doesn't fit tomorrow, we could have a chat at a later date. Best, GT

York meetup

Hi GuillaumeTell, it was good to meet you again yesterday. I've now set up a page for the proposed York meetup on 14 June: meta:Meetup/York/2. So far it is without a venue, but perhaps you could suggest a location. Thanks, Bazonka (talk) 18:33, 13 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
