Guardians of the Galaxy is an American animated television series, based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name. It is produced by Marvel Television and Marvel Animation. The series will air on Disney XD and premiere on September 26, 2015 as a part of the Marvel Universe block.
While it will serve as a spiritual continuation of the first film's plot,[3] film director James Gunn has stated that it is not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe nor connected to the feature film or its sequel.[4]
Premise
The series will pick up where the film left off facing off against Thanos as its major villain.[3]

Production
Marvel was rumored considering starting a new animated series with another Spider-Man show or a Guardians of the Galaxy show. The appearances of the Guardians in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Ultimate Spider-Man were supposed test runs for their own show. Comicbookmovie.com indicated in January 2014 that the Guardians series was selected for development.[14]
On July 26, 2014, at San Diego Comic-Con, a week before the release of the Guardians of the Galaxy film, Marvel Animation announced the Guardians of the Galaxy animated TV series with a trailer featuring Rocket Raccoon and Star-Lord.[15] With the success of the live action film, Marvel and Disney XD announced that they were moving forward with the animated series at New York Comic Con, where they showed some test footage.[16] It is intended to air in 2015 as part of the Marvel Universe block on Disney XD.[2]
Advanced previews of the show started airing on Disney XD on August 1, 2015. A full preview of the series aired on Disney XD on September 5, with the official one-hour premiere on September 26.[17]
Music
In late August, it was revealed that licensed songs from the 70s would be used to accommodate the tone and soundtrack of the series.[18]
In September, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Mix Vol. 1 (Music from the Animated Television Series) was announced, a collection of 12 songs featured in the show’s first season.[19]
