== Independence ==

There is mistake in the article. I'd have fixed it but it seems like editing is not allowed. Anyway, it says Israel received "independence" in 1948. Israel didn't exist as any kind of entity before its establishment at the end of the British Mandate on May 14, 1948, so the term 'independence' seems inapplicable.

Former good article nomineeShimon Peres was a good articles nominee, but did not meet the good article criteria at the time. There may be suggestions below for improving the article. Once these issues have been addressed, the article can be renominated. Editors may also seek a reassessment of the decision if they believe there was a mistake.

It was reported in Maariv.

Mr. Peres made a speech at the "Conference of Commerical Bureaus" held on 10th October 2007 in Tel-Aviv. Is it possible to listen to this speech somewhere on the net? Thanks! 91.83.21.173 10:19, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GA fail

I'm sorry, but I cannot pass the article at this time. Here are some things for you to work on before renominating the article:

  • There are entire sections and paragraphs without inline citations. An article needs to be fully referenced to be a GA. This is the biggest issue with the article.
  • Numbers under 100 should be spelled out.
  • Paragraphs need to be longer than a sentence or two. Either merge shorter paragraphs together, into larger ones, or delete them entirely.
  • A couple of the citations need to be formatted with the Template:cite web.

Good luck. Nikki311 03:09, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You are absolutely right in your criticisms except for one thing. Only numbers under 10 are spelled out.--Gilabrand (talk) 11:25, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Birthday

Here are the references I previously used in the article :

  • August 2 1923
    • "Shimon Peres". The Knesset's internet site. Retrieved 2008-08-28.
    • "Shimon Peres". Prime Minister of Israel's internet site. Retrieved 2008-08-28.
  • I have begun to list the various dates and sources on fr:Discuter:Shimon Peres#Date de naissance and I found as many as five possible dates : 1st, 2nd, 15th, 16th and 21st of August. In particular Encyclopedia Britannica says it is the 16th.
  • Another Autobiographical work published in French mentions the 21st of August.
Don't waste your time. Peres states his birth date in the first paragraph of his autobiography. Who are you - or any of these sources - to challenge that???? The fact that a birthday celebration is held on a different day doesn't meant it's his birthday.--Gilabrand (talk) 11:20, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In the book published in French, Shimon Peres says Je suis né à Vichneva en 5683, le vingtième jour du mois de Ab, ce qui correspond dans le calendrier grégorien au 21 août 1923 (Google books), which means "I was born in Vichneva in 5683, the 20th of Av, which means in Gregorian calendar August 21st 1923", but, according to hebcal.com, 20th of Av, 5683 = 2 August 1923. This implies that Shimon Peres might have made a calculation mistake when converting from one calendar to another. Perhaps we should ask a specialist of calendar conversion to help us. Teofilo talk 11:36, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This is the English version (edited by David Landau, a religious Jew who knows very well how to do the date conversion: I was born as night turned to day on 21 August, 1923, into a world of transition. I think it is rather presumptuous of you to claim that Shimon Peres can't figure out when his own birthday is.--Gilabrand (talk) 12:38, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
To the contrary, it seems rather preposterous to claim that Shimon Peres was born in the month of Elul (21 August 1923 = 9th of Elul, 5683) rather than in the month of Av, as he elaborates himself on the significance of being born in the month of Av in his book, and while the Jerusalem Post confirms that his birthday celebration according to the Jewish Calendar is August 21st 2008, which can be converted as follows : Thu, 21 August 2008 = 20th of Av, 5768. Teofilo talk 13:03, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
See also : The published discrepancies evidently stem from the fact that Peres primarily observes his Hebrew birth-date - the 20th of Av. In 1923, this coincided with August 2, the date cited in most biographies of Israel's ninth president. This year, the 20th of Av falls on Saturday, August 4. Greer Fay Cashman, "Peres turns 84 today... and on Shabbat", Jerusalem Post, Aug. 1, 2007 Teofilo talk 13:45, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Perhaps the thing to do might be to use the 20 Av 5683 date as his birth-date, since that is what he observes, and then subscript August 2, 1923 (similar to how N.S./O.S. is often done in bio wiki's). That provides an indication that the Hebrew date is what should be used for observance, as well as the actual day in history in 1923 that he was born. The JPost article explains that it will be a different Gregorian day every year that Peres actually celebrates. So make the emphasis on the Hebrew date as he does. Just an outsider lay-person's two cent thought....Wiseprincebambi (talk) 22:25, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Reference to "Mirage IV"

The article has a small factual error: Israel has never acquired any Mirage IV aircraft. Mirage IV was a strategic attack aircraft that the French have never exported. I corrected this to "Mirage III" as it should be.

Name

Any rationale why he changed his name to the Sephardi-sounding Peres? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.31.163.209 (talk) 19:21, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I found my way here from Bearded_vulture where New Republic is cited as saying "In 1945, when he was still Shimon Persky, while mapping a portion of the Negev desert with David Ben-Gurion, he stumbled on the nest of a bearded vulture, or “Peres” as the bird is known in Hebrew. He liked the sound of “Peres”--and it was Hebrew, not Yiddish. And so Shimon Persky became Shimon Peres." I know nothing about Mr. Peres, and came here to see if there was anything else mentioned on the topic. I was a little surprised to find no mention at all (aside from this question) of the reason for, or occasion of, the name change, but I'll leave it to wiser minds to decide what to do with the information. Declaring that a politician was named after a vulture is a bigger mess than I want to step in. --71.234.116.22 (talk) 00:46, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Genocide denial

Although it provides the full quote of his statement, the article downplays Peres' denial of the Armenian genocide. Instead of "allegedly downplayed", imho the article should clearly state that Peres denies the Armenian genocide and should provide a citation for the quote, such as the April 10th edition of the Turkish Daily News (TDN). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Greggdourgarian (talkcontribs) 17:33, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

1990-1995: citation needed

The paragraph appears to read "After Rabin's assassination in 1995, Peres again became Prime Minister.[citation needed]"

This is obviously not the case; Peres *did* become prime minister after Rabin was assassinated.

Either the citation needed mark has been left behind by mistake, or it was supposed to refer to something else in the same paragraph, in which case it should be moved to refer to something more controversial.

'wiped off the map' controversy

See the following passage from the 'Political Views' section of the article:

"In the same speech, Peres compared Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his call to "wipe Israel off the map" to the genocidal threats to European Jewry made by Adolf Hitler in the years prior to the Holocaust.[32] "

I wanted to hyperlink the text '"wipe Israel off the map"' to the following wikipedia page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmoud_Ahmadinejad_and_Israel#.22Wiped_off_the_map.22_controversy

The wording of the quote declaratively affirms that there was in fact a call to wipe Israel off the map and fails to mention the controversy surrounding the quality of the translation.

Therefore I feel that it fails to live up to NPOV criteria.

Without wishing to cause a political dispute in the article, I feel it would be helpful (and in the interests of neutrality) to link this controversial quote to another wikipedia article capable of shedding light on the matter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wibblyglorph (talkcontribs) 13:46, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think it would be a good idea to first get a native speaker of the Iranian language to see if that what he really said. I believe it may not be quite as clear as some believe. 2601:181:8301:4510:9BA:6D34:DAE1:83F7 (talk) 14:38, 28 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"republican constitution"

"the fourth oldest head of state ever under a republican constitution", no he's not. for the simple reason that Israel does not have a republican constitution. in fact Israel does not have ANY constitution. this is because of the status quo agreement under which Israel doesn't build a normative civil democracy with a constitution and in exchange (some sects among) Orthodox Jews offer a sort of grudging compliance with the state. this sentence should maybe be changed to "the fourth oldest non-monarchial head of state ever" but i don't know if this also includes bishops or lamas or imams who headed states but aren't quite considered monarchs. in any event, no citation is provided. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.125.227.60 (talk) 17:25, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

First cousin

Lauren Bacall's legal original name was NOT Betty Joan Persky, but Betty Joan Perske. Legally, after her father (William Perske) left her mother and abandoned her at the age of 8, her mother legally changed Betty's name to Betty Joan Bacal. It was later that Howard Hawks would changed her name to Lauren and add the extra L to her name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mtracy2010 (talkcontribs) 17:26, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please change the two chapters:

• 1956 Suez Crisis, line 3: “sent by David Ben Gurion to Paris” to “sent by David Ben-Gurion to Paris”. • Influences, line 1: “Ben Gurion” to “Ben-Gurion”

Reason: Name “Ben-Gurion” typed with minor mistake, without hyper-minus (Ben Gurion) and when the first time appears name David Ben-Gurion should link to Wikipedia page “David Ben-Gurion”

Peace prize

There appears to be an inside story about how Peres won his Nobel.

'The Nobel Prize committee decided to award the Peace Prize to Arafat and Rabin. Peres' admirers around the world raised hell, until the committee added Peres to the list. Justice demanded awarding the prize also to Mahmoud Abbas, who had signed with Peres. But the statutes allow only for three laureates. So Abbas did not become a Nobel laureate, too.'Uri Avnery, 'The Saga of Sisyphus,' Gush Shalom, 24 September 2016.

Hello, I am not certain to whom I am writing and if formality is required here. Either way, I will go straight to the point. Israel's 9th prime minister Shimon Peres had passed away yesterday. On his Wikipedia page there is an old photo, where he was a mere child. I have cleaned this photo, as a way to show my gratitude for what he has done for my country. So I would like to replace the photo with the cleaned one. Best Regards, Wikipedia Fresh user.

The infobox is broken thanks to a rogue pair of closed curly brackets on the "awards" line:

|awards         = [[Nobel Peace Prize]] (1994)}}

As such, several infobox syntax lines spill over into the page's contents. Removing the curly brackets should fix this.

I'd like to add a few things after the first sentence, "From 1954, as Director-General of the Ministry of Defense, Peres was involved in the planning of the 1956 Suez War, in partnership with France and Britain" in the Suez Crisis 1956 chapter. I've written the following to be added after the first sentence I just mentioned above. "The Israeli leadership viewed the United States as the first country in the world to recognize the new Jewish state, and as the natural candidate to turn to for arms. However, as Peres had pointed out, Israel was denied arms while other Arab countries were still receiving them. This happened in spite of the Tripartite Declaration which was issued in May, 25th 1950, where by France, Britain and the United States had committed themselves to maintain an arms balance in the region (p.408). After Israel was denied arms by the U.S., Peres looked at France as the alternative source of arms (p. 412). Peres was confident that France would ally with them because of France's empathy for the underdeveloped Jewish state. Another fact that made Peres confident that France would agree to ally with them was that the French had been very sympathetic towards the Jews. In 1950, some of France's politicians had been involved in the Resistance during World War 2 and others had been prisoners in the concentration camps that had held Jews (p. 414). After Ben-Gurion returned to the Defense Ministry in February 1955, Peres had to persuade his mentor that France was the most logical country to turn to for arms after the U.S. had previously denied them (p. 413). Ben-Gurion gave Peres complete authority to pursue what we know today as the 'French connection'(p.413). Peres himself built a personal relationship with French politicians, bureaucrats, military officials and industrialists (p.418). In the fall of 1954, France delivered a substantial package of arms (p. 418)." If anyone wants to make comments on these changes or any suggestions, please let me know on this talk page or my talk page. Source: Ziv, G. "Shimon Peres and the French-Israeli Alliance, 1954--9." And thought since it is in 2010 and has Israeli flags in the background, would it make it a more suitable lead image than the current one? Curious. --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 01:21, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Independence

There is mistake in the article. I'd have fixed it but it seems like editing is not allowed. Anyway, it says Israel received "independence" in 1948. Israel didn't exist as any kind of entity before its establishment at the end of the British Mandate on May 14, 1948, so the term 'independence' seems inapplicable.
