Hey Brighterorange, I'm writing to see if you might have another look at the AFD for P-1000 here. I posted a comment there about my failure to find reliable sources describing the P-1000. Image problem on "Albright Special" page?

Isn't there a problem with the instructional diagram and the photograph on the stub page for the Albright Special knot (bend)? In an Albright tied correctly (for fishing with monofilament line, anyway), it's important that the tag end and standing part of the light line exit from the same side of the bight in the heavier line. This is not true in the photograph Albright_Special.jpg. It is also not true in the the two middle steps illustrated in Albright_Special_Diagram.jpg, which cannot follow from the first step nor lead to the final step (the first and last steps are correct). (Forgive my ineptness; I've never contributed to Wikipedia before now in any way. I just curiously searched for this knot because it's one I use routinely for fishing.)

Next WikiProject Punctuation

Hi, Was wondering when you are pulling the next dump off for the Project Punctuation?

Im thinking, that after the articles have been punctuated, i may run AWB over them with RETF to catch other spellings....

Wonder if there is a way to get AWB to look for missing '.'...

I will enquire

  • I don't have any specific plans. Perhaps September again? I've been thinking of doing a round to look for em dashes and en dashes that could be rendered better. But there are a lot of these. Maybe it would be good to integrate with some kind of automated editing process... — brighterorange (talk) 14:22, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"en dash"

Hello - I just noticed your edit to the Bob O'Connor article, about inserting "en dash".

I saw what the edit did. Can you explain to me what that actually does, or what effect it has, versus the actual "-" character? I'm just curious...an opportunity to learn something new. Thanks! NickBurns 21:12, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I used to use the html entities exclusively, but I actually think that the unicode characters '–' and '—' are the better way to go because they look better while editing. They're available in the edittools box below the save page button. I don't have a bot for it; I think that there are too many false positive scenarios for it to be totally automatic. However I have been working on a script that can do most of the work with a little human oversight. It's at User:brighterorange/punctuation.js. If you want to try it out, let me know so I can write some documentation. — brighterorange (talk)
  • The script works well on these pages. I did up to and including Illinois. — brighterorange (talk) 18:25, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I reverted your auto edits over at 3D Monster Maze since in things like "1234-05" yyyy-mm dates it is not a range of numbers, so endash is inappropriate; moreover, this way it is inconsistent with the neighbouring "1234-05-67" yyyy-mm-dd style dates. Please adjust your script... --BACbKA 13:05, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I don't know why I did that. Thank you. — brighterorange (talk) 16:42, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since you indicated that you are a student at CMU, you may be interested in a Wikimeet I'm trying to set up in Pittsburgh. You may join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Meetup/Pittsburgh if you're interested. We currently have 4 interested people and are hoping to bring that number up to at least 5. Thanks for the heads up about Image:Lightning Bolt.jpg and Image:BrianChippendale.jpg. Bohr Atom: SVG vs PNG

Hello, I saw that you replaced a PNG with an SVG. Something is wrong, in the process of displaying that picture. Could you revert your change, until the process is fixed? Also, I am working on an article that has some illustrations, and I have spent a good deal of time learning SVG and building my illustrations; seeing what happened to your illustration, disturbs me. Who do we talk to about this?

For your reference (and for forwarding to whoever is in charge), here is what I see, five hours after your change, using both Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer from a Microsoft Windows machine.

Viewing the page Mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics, I see the frame for the Bohr atomic model illustration, but that frame is empty.

When I right-click on the empty area and select "Properties", I see that Explorer and Firefox are both trying to show me this file: "http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a5/Bohr_atom_model_English.svg/180px-Bohr_atom_model_English.svg.png".

When I left-click on the empty area, I go to a page titled "Image:Bohr atom model English.svg". That page shows a faint checkerboard pattern in Firefox, and a blank white area in Explorer. When I left-click on the name of the graphic file (below the empty display of same), in either browser, I go to this file (which displays properly in both browsers): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a5/Bohr_atom_model_English.svg

--Swwright 22:45, 12 February 2007 (UTC)Talk[reply]

  • Yeah, I have seen this problem a few times. I'd like to help fix it, but I expect it's something only the developers can do (probably having to do with a race condition in SVG conversion). Sometimes the images just don't get generated correctly and then they are stuck as completely transparent images; doing an ?action=purge on the image page seems to often fix it. I purged the cache and it seems to be okay now in the atomic theory article. — brighterorange (talk) 23:12, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes resizing the image also fixes the problem. TimVickers 17:55, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My vote is for image #10. All of these images are lovely, so I can be exremely picky: 1 is a very good shot, but the composition could be improved (the lights in the corners are particularly distracting). 2's composition is perfect, but the image uploaded is very low resolution, and has a currently hip ultrasharpened HDRish look to it that will look very 2000s in a decade or two. 3 is a great animation, but I suspect it will also not age well, and there's something uncomfortably discontinuous about the motion. 4 is an apropos and unintrusive use of animation, but the image quality is actually not that good (low resolution, aliased font, aliasing at edges of moon); I think it also misleadingly suggests that it is actual photographs of the moon. The long exposure of 5 makes it appear blurry at large sizes. The composition of 6 is awesome but the image quality and contrast are only "good". 7 is a perfectly great wildlife photo, but is sort of obvious. Similarly with 8, except that foreground branches are additionally a bit distracting. 9 is wonderful in every way, and would win my favorite photo of the group, but its usefulness in an encyclopedia is limited. 11 is a great encyclopedic capture of a difficult to photograph event; really nothing to criticize about it at all except that the subject is a little mundane. 10 is high quality, and outstanding in its capture of something encyclopedic that would otherwise be basically impossible to see, so it is my pick. Thumbs up all around! — brighterorange (talk) 17:47, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Auto edit to 1 − 2 + 3 − 4 + · · ·

I reverted your edit to 1 − 2 + 3 − 4 + · · ·, which has the summary "auto 10 en dash". Besides introducing en dashes, your edit replaced some .png links with .svg links and it even replaced a working picture with a non-existing link. Since this seems to have been an automatic / bot edit, please have a good look at what happens and make sure it doesn't happen again. Cheers, Jitse Niesen (talk) 01:54, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kleenex Girl Wonder

I noticed that you were the person who made the "Kleenex Girl Wonder" page a redirect to Kleenexgirlwonder. The band is more commonly known by the former--this is how they format the name on their website, it's how it appears on most albums, it's how allmusic has it--so I'm curious about why you put the redirect in place and if you'd consider changing it back. • Thanks, I know about the speedy keep guideline, but since the nominator hadn't withdrawn his deletion request it doesn't meet the criteria. So I was simply being clear that this was an WP:IAR close under the reasoning in WP:SNOW. — brighterorange (talk) 21:11, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Zach White article marked for speedy deletion

The article for Zach White wasn't made by him, it was made by a fan of his. He was an important gay rights activist in the community and a CBS made for tv movie is going to be made about his struggle in central Ohio pretty soon. Please leave it up, his page is recent deaths was also deleted as soon as it was put up, and no one can figure out why. He did everyone in B.C. and the rest of the world a favor, his story just needs to be heard, as it has been in most parts of Ohio.

en dashes

  • It's not a bot, it's a client-side script, but it does automates the process with a little oversight from the user. (There are lots of things that cause false positives, so I don't think there's much hope for full automation.) I hope to make it available for wider use as part of [[WP:.|project punctuation]] soon. Tulane shield/badjpg

I continue to by mystified as to why if we can only display something at low resolution under fair use that we would want to use .svg rather than .jpg. Asking Tulane University to publish its trademarks as vector files for free distribution seems a bit presumptuous. --Dystopos 14:34, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I don't see why you say "free distribution"? The logo would still be protected under trademark and copyright. I believe it's preferable to use SVG even for fair use logos because it allows us to prepare our articles for print as well as be future-proof against increasing screen resolutions. In this particular case, though, a bitmap image in a lossless format like PNG would be far better than the JPEG, which shows visible artifacts in the solid color areas. That's the real problem and the reason for the {{BadJPEG}} tag. — brighterorange (talk) 15:50, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your work adding maps—colorful and stylish ones at that!—to the Pittsburgh neighborhood articles. Bravo.Rudowsky 17:37, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My pleasure! There are still many more articles in need of the infoboxes, if you want to help. It's easy: the census PDF has the population and area information, Google Maps or Google Earth has the coordinates, and commons:category:Locator maps of Pittsburgh neighborhoods has all of the locator images. Lots of articles are in need of photographs. — brighterorange (talk) 17:50, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Apostrophes

Just so you know, an apostrophe "s" is supposed to be included in the link per the MOS. See here. Thanks for fixing my dashes in Mary: A Fiction! Awadewit | talk 15:02, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes, strange that Mediawiki's link extension code doesn't work in that case. I had already switched it back when I saw that it didn't match the others in the same article. FWIW, I'm all for consistency but given this I have to disagree with the MOS when it says that that it makes the source easier to read... — brighterorange (talk) 15:11, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Perhaps you could fix the code? I've often found that problem annoying. I actually agree with the MOS in this case; I find it odd to have all of these little "'s" hanging off links. Since the "'s" is part of the word, it seems like it should be part of the link to me. Personal aesthetic response. :) Awadewit | talk 15:23, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think it looks a little better too, but it certainly makes the source more complicated. My guess is that this isn't implemented because the apostrophe character is special in wiki syntax, but there's no fundamental reason why it couldn't work (as far as I can tell). Unfortunately I think that getting changes like this integrated into mediawiki and then into wikipedia is a very arduous project, or I'd take a stab at it... — brighterorange (talk) 15:27, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Brighterorange,

I noticed that you contributed to the Kearny High School page, so I wanted to ask you a question about the article. Someone is saying that the link Kearny High School Soccer is inadmissible. I'm not sure if he is correct or not. Can you see the link and his post here? [3] Your input will be appreciated. --Creashin 03:59, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for replying. I don't have super strong feelings on it either, but it seems that the guy who does is somewhat of a stalker. And I liked your thoughts on whether or not it would improve the article and I think the answer is obviously "yes". --Creashin 02:44, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Super Mario RPG lists

Currently, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars has two lists pertaining to it (List of characters in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and List of locations in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars). User:TTN decided it would be best to merge the lists into the main article and split Smithy Gang into those articles. I recently merged Smithy Gang into the list of chatacters by removing the non-notable characters, and I have asserted that a cameo section in the list of characters is valid, per Wikipedia:Trivia sections and Wikipedia:Handling trivia that uses Alex Trebek#Cameos as a good example. I have suggested that we rename the articles per Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting potentially controversial moves to something along the lines of Characters of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and World of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars or Mushroom Kingdom (Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars) just like Characters of Final Fantasy VIII and World of Final Fantasy VI or Gaia (Final Fantasy VII). I believe if these articles are to evolve beyond a non-notable list, they should be renamed. For example, List of Final Fantasy VII locations was merged into Gaia (Final Fantasy VII), because a World article is notable, but a simple list of locations is not. That is why there are other secions of the article to make it a World article. It simply has not been renamed yet.

TTN believes the citations in the development and reception sections of the list of locations, books and magazines, are trivial sources. When I added that the 3D perspective of the game is reminicent of Equinox to the main article, TTN removed it since my souce was "the opinions of the Nintendo Power player's guide writers". Although it was actually Nintendo Power magazine, I do believe a magazine is a reliable source, and I gave a page from Next Generation Magazine which also said the same thing. In addition, I was surprized that TTN said that it was from the players guide, since he claims to own the players guide for the game. He has not verified this, since I asked him for citations in May, "Could you look in the back of the Player's Guide and tell me what “types” of … Magic? I forgot what they call it in the game … well, anyways, what types of Special Attack or whatever it is (actually, could you find out what it's called?) there are? I remember some vaguely when I owned the guide like “Fire”, “Jump”, “Electricity?”, etc. Could you provide a citation, like the page number with a quote in context?" TTN replied that he was going to "get to it" (User talk:TTN/Archive 5#List of locations in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars). TTN claims the player's guide is "at the bottom of a box that's behind at least five others in a cramped space". Seeing that TTN did not recognize that the page was not from the player's guide when I provided a scan of the page in question from Nintendo Power shocked me. However, I have continued to assume good faith by not questioning TTN's honesty.

Per Wikipedia:Consensus#Consensus can change, I have offered five different reasonable, temporary compromises that might integrate my idea with TTN's.

  1. Go over the list of characters so we can delete non–notable characters
  2. Rename the articles by following the steps at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting potentially controversial moves.
  3. Cut down the geography section list of locations by cutting it into the regional maps the adventures use when traveling from one to another. I can get pictures and write the fair use rationals, and someone can cut down the text that has no citation and does not allude to other media.
  4. Write the concept and creation and reception sections for the list of characters
  5. Write the concept and creation section for the main article

TTN rejected my compromise because it still keeps the articles. I agreed I would consider a redirect, but Wikipedia:Article size does not allow that, since the list of locations is currently 82 KB long. Instead, I agreed to help cut down the geography section that is the bulk of the article, but TTN rejected that as well because TTN states, "I am not interested in working on the article in regards to improving it." and "get past this "having sources automatically means that this information is good" mentality." TTN states, "I don't think they have or will ever assert notability." I have replied with, "Wikipedia is not a crystal ball, so if you don't think the articles will ever assert notability, we cannot yet know this, per Wikipedia:Arguments to avoid in deletion discussions#I don't like it.

I see that you are deeply involved in converting US city/state single links to two different wikilinks. Why? Did I miss the memo? I would much rather see one link for San Francisco, California (for example) than two. Binksternet 06:13, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I don't disagree with your example above. What I'm referring to are your disambiguations that appear in articles such as USS Missouri (BB-63) where you change this:
"Armed as such, Missouri was formally recommissioned in San Francisco, California on 10 May 1986."
...to this:
"Armed as such, Missouri was formally recommissioned in San Francisco, California on 10 May 1986."
I see in Wikipedia:Manual of Style (links) that it's not good practice to put two links right next to each other where they appear at first glance to be one link. I hold that the single link to California doesn't add to the understanding of the subject in this example. Binksternet 13:56, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know what you're referring to; I'm making a comparison to other kinds of disambiguating titles. I think it looks better and is pretty common style on Wikipedia. — brighterorange (talk) 21:30, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Hi Tom, I was looking through the history of The Notorious B.I.G. article and I came across this edit of yours. I'm just curious to know why the <br> tag was converted to <br /> despite looking identical. Cheers. Spellcast 03:35, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The main point of that edit was to fix the spacing of the reference, but my script also automatically fixes the syntax of the <br> tag so that it is valid XHTML (in XHTML, a tag that has no matching closing tag, like <references />, must use this self-closing syntax). It doesn't affect the page rendering, so I only bother to make that change when there are real fixes to be made as well. I just noticed that MediaWiki now (?) renders a bare <br> tag as the XHTML-compliant <br />, so the point may be moot except for applications that try to parse the HTML contained within the Wiki source but that are somehow confused by invalid XML. Anyway, a minor thing but there you have it. — brighterorange (talk) 14:12, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen several other scripts that also convert to <br />. I know it's a minor issue but I trust you know what you're doing. In the future, I will use <br />. Thanks for clearing that up! Spellcast 07:44, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

City-state changes

Hi,

What's the rationale for these edits? We shouldn't be taking unambiguous links like Nashville, Tennessee and splitting them into two separate links unless there's reason to believe that both city and state are particularly relevant to the article. In most cases the state is just there to provide context. Is there some guideline on this that I'm missing? Chris Cunningham 08:31, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is mistaken IMO. The disambiguation is for the benefit of readers, not for the benefit of making the link point to the correct location. It ensures that readers know which Nashville is being discussed, and if they've never heard of Nashville it gives them an appropriate frame of reference. What's definitely not right is splitting these links up, which results in run-on links where the second part is only tangentially related to the article (and thus doesn't really need a link). I'm going to reverse these changes in future unless there's reason to believe that the two-link version adds clarity to an article. Chris Cunningham 08:28, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you can revert if you want, but this is pretty common style. I don't understand when you say that disambiguation is for the benefit of readers; in an article we generally link to disambiguated pages using only the base name for that article and hide the disambiguation part. That's why the pipe trick exists, and works for comma as well as parentheses. There's also the (usually substed) {{city-state}} template that does the same thing. Are you objecting just to the fact that Tennessee is linked in Nashville, Tennessee? Otherwise, I don't understand. — brighterorange (talk) 14:22, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You had this argument already at #City, State single links converted to two links. The point is as follows:
  1. Nashville, Tennessee links to the correct Nashville. Per WP:MOSLINKS#Content, it is better to link a whole phrase which provides context than just to a fragment if the current version goes to the right place.
  2. In most cases, the reason for linking to Nashville, Tennessee or Sacramento, California is not as an attempt to avoid redirects; it's an attempt to provide a bit of context.
  3. "Tennessee" isn't important. So it shouldn't be linked unless, per WP:MOSLINKS#Form, it would avoid having to pipe things. In the case of Nashville, Tennessee, we're basically just wasting pipes.
  4. "It's common on Wikipedia" is just a rephrasing of WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS where the reason it's common isn't through deliberate effort. This is the first time I've seen this style being used deliberately (I've never come across {{city-state}}, but suffice to say I disagree with it), and like the user above who questioned you on it I don't believe it's useful or necessary.
Chris Cunningham 14:52, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In regard to (4) I think in a stylistic argument it is reasonable to refer to style used elsewhere in the encyclopedia as evidence that the style is acceptable. WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is an essay about deletion, not style! I don't deny that there are some people that disagree (when aren't there?) but there are also people that agree. Look a bit and you'll see it all over the place. Take the lead sentence of University of Western Ontario, for instance; it links to London, Ontario, not London, Ontario. Do you think that's wrong?
For (3) I suppose it depends on context whether the state is important, but I don't have anything against "Nashville, Tennessee." We do generally link place names, though. What does it mean to be "wasting pipes"?
In response to (1) I don't believe WP:MOSLINKS#Content is relevant because Nashville, Tennessee is disambiguation, not a phrase. It is not the name of the city. The reasoning is the same as for other disambiguations like Georgia (U.S. State).
Finally, let me mention that the reason I prefer doing this is not just semantic but aesthetic: commas look terrible in links because they intersect the underline. — brighterorange (talk) 16:07, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS might be directly concerning deletion requests, but it's very commonly linked to to at least convey the meaning; that Wikipedia is really rather huge, and therefore it'll almost always be possible to find an existing example of whatever thing people are trying to dissuade a user from doing. In the UWO article, yes I think it's wrong, and had I the desire to add even more random pages to my watchlist I'd go and correct it right now.
"wasting pipes" was just a cute way of saying that "Nashville, Tennessee" uses up an extra dozen bytes on Wikipedia for absolutely no benefit to a single soul.
And "Nashville, Tennessee" is not "disambiguation" in the Wikipedia sense (well, it is, but that's an altogether different kind of thing); it's clarification in the normal manner of introductory prose for subjects that the reader may not be intimately familiar with. If it isn't clear from the article that a link to Nashville definitely means "Nashville, Tennessee" without having to hover over the link, it absolutely should be "disambiguated" in the article prose.
Finally, the aesthetic thing: monoBook has underlining links turned off by default. Approximately everyone on Wikipedia uses the default monoBook appearance. We should be optimising for approximately everyone by default. Chris Cunningham 18:36, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(for what it's worth, that's UWO cleaned up :) ) Chris Cunningham 18:39, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're right about monobook; I almost always look at the site logged in. I agree that since underlined links are the default the aesthetic issue is not important. I think you and I differ on what the purpose of disambiguation is, but that means I don't find your argument very persuasive. Essentially, I think that we should not let the arbitrary naming conventions of Wikipedia articles infect the prose of the articles that link to them. I'm particularly surprised that you think the UWO article was in error. There are loads of articles that use this style, particularly in the lead. Regarding your change (and the consequent de-linking of Ontario), how could it be the case that both London and Canada are "important" in that first paragraph, but not Ontario? — brighterorange (talk) 01:23, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think Canada is notable in this case because the sentence in which it is linked specifically draws a comparison to the rest of Canada's universities. As for "infecting the prose", I don't think this is the case at all. I think it's pretty conventional to refer to London, Ontario instead of London, Canada, and the article prose definitely needs to point out that it's not London, England, but it's fairly arbitary. I would refer to my currently location as Linlithgow, Scotland in articles normally, even though Linlithgow isn't a disambig page - I may go for Linlithgow, West Lothian if I were editing an article with a uniquely Scottish context. In any case, I don't generally think that any part of the location is assumed to be notable (and hence worth linking to as a matter of course) except the town or city. But I'd generally provide at least some clarification in the prose. Chris Cunningham 10:00, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

LAHS Article

re: Los Alamos High School

Basically I had stopped doing the wikipedia thing because I got tired of babysitting Peter Ekman (the notorious groper of eXile infamy).

But this article for LAHS had atrophied so much that I was kind of offended after all the work I put into creating it. Apparently LAHS is most notable for the rate it graduates Wikipedia vandals. I saw that you got rid of some of that, btw, so thanks. Anyway I went back and fixed it up. I know you're busy with the PhD and everything but when you get a chance maybe you could advise me how I could take the horribly pixelated LAHS logo and turn it into a smooth vector graphic. Hello, I was recommended to you (or rather your bot was) by Awadewit, so I must be in good company. :) If you have the time, could you run the bot for Emily Dickinson? It's just passed GA and I was hoping to take it to Peer Review and FA sometime in the future. I'm afraid her punctuation is rather heavy on the dashes, so if your bot threatens to crash because of this request, I completely understand your reason for not offering your services. :) Happy holidays! No problem! — brighterorange (talk) 06:36, 26 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Endashes

Hi. I have an article undergoing peer review with a view to achieving FA status. User:SandyGeorgia said you could run a programme to change hyphens to endashes in the notes. As I don't even know what that means I'd be extremely obliged if you would do it! The article is Reactive attachment disorder. Thanks again. Fainites barley 19:36, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The best thing about punctuation.js is you don't even need to know what it means! Cheers! — brighterorange (talk) 19:59, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Whatever it was. Fainites barley 20:50, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SVGs?

Hi Brighter

I was wondering if you could help at all? You flagged up at the FAC for Stocksbridge Park Steels F.C. that the graphs should be in SVG format, not JPG. I went ahead and created Image:NPLOneGates.svg, but it doesn't display correctly. It seems to have made it onto the server, as if you click on the empty space where it should be then the image opens, but it doesn't display within the page itself. Any idea what I've done wrong?

Cheers, ChrisTheDude (talk) 07:13, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is displaying now, but it looks like something's wrong. Did you auto-trace a bitmap image to produce this? That will produce bad results for line art like this. Also, it looks like the text is being stroked rather than filled, which makes it almost unreadable. — brighterorange (talk) 14:50, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia ML Master List

A reference for ML - Master Lists was already provided. ML- Master Lists is a form of web-specific content - its content is distributed solely on Internet - and is grouped under the Wesites category.

Its notability is not temporary as the interest in the topic has been continual.

The Wikipedia article would be able to develop other sections, for instance the article on Tinyurl.com. The Wikipedia article does not describes the nature, appearance or services a website offers, it describes the ML - Master Lists concept and, according to the Wikipedia policies, is more up-to-date than most reference sources, incorporating new developments and facts as they are made known. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.93.8.231 (talk) 17:03, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but Wikipedia is not the right place to promote concepts like this. At a minimum, it must be written about by multiple independent sources before it can have an article. — brighterorange (talk) 17:18, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

block message missing?

Hallo Tom, Thanks for blocking the vandal IP User:70.43.30.174 I reported, but I'm puzzled as to why you didn't leave a block message on their talk page. Isn't that standard? Cheers, PamD (talk) 17:48, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, you're right, I just forgot! — brighterorange (talk) 19:04, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tom,

An image of yours has made it to the Commons 2007 POTY final round of voting. Congratulations and good luck. Don't forget that you are eligible to vote, too. cheers, pfctdayelise (talk) 10:53, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! I am surprised to see it as a finalist (some of those pictures are incredibly good), but I won't complain. Thanks for letting me know! — brighterorange (talk) 14:40, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dashbot

When you have a moment, could you run your dashbot over Joseph Priestley House? Much appreciated! Awadewit | talk 06:44, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did it! — brighterorange (talk) 07:30, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Awadewit | talk 07:43, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I created this article today I came across you in the AfD page of Dial-a-Phone. Could you have a look over it for me I will be adding more to it and also putting in diagrams when I figure out how it's done thanks.BigDunc (talk) 11:49, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I posted some comments on the talk page for the article. — brighterorange (talk) 16:33, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for your input have started work on your suggestions not sure what exactly you mean in your last point could you help me out with that if you get time, thanks again. BigDunc (talk) 18:28, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The Barnstar of Recovery
For endeavoring, and ultimately succeding, to save Ruth Fowler (Writer) from deletion during its AfD against your own better judgement (It's rather thankless and risky to fix an article when it's on AfD with two delete opinions), I hereby award to you this Barnstar of Recovery. En dash script?

SandyGeorgia suggested on the FAC for Giant Otter that you have a script of some sort that takes care of missing en dashes in references. Is it possible you run that for this article or point out how to? Like many others, I'm often dash inefficient. Cheers, Marskell (talk) 12:25, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Giant Otter is no longer dashficient! — brighterorange (talk) 04:09, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you sir! Marskell (talk) 10:45, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request for you to use your endash script on a FAC

Per a suggestion from SandyGeorgia (talk · contribs), could you use your endash script on the article that is currently undergoing a WP:FAC, Hell Is Other Robots ? Thanks for your time, Cirt (talk) 19:58, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I ran it, but didn't find any fixes to be made. — brighterorange (talk) 04:55, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. FYI, I mentioned you at the FAC page for the article, please feel free to clarify at there for the benefit of other evaluators of the article - as I am not familiar with your script. Cirt (talk) 05:02, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dash script

Could you run your dash script on Boydell Shakespeare Gallery? I would appreciate it. (By the way, is there a way I can run this script myself? I hate bothering you all of the time!) Awadewit | talk 23:45, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I did it. Yeah, the idea is for this to be something that anyone can use, but I haven't written any documentation for how to install or use it yet. Don't worry about leaving requests, it only takes me a few seconds to do 'em! — brighterorange (talk) 06:04, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again! Awadewit | talk 06:09, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request for endash script on FAC:Oxygen

SandyGeorgia (talk · contribs) suggested to ask you to run an endash script on Oxygen article that is currently undergoing a FAC. Thanks, Nergaal (talk) 04:40, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And Koli Point action. Thanks for everything you do, Orange. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 05:22, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
would it be hard to convert the script into a bot? Nergaal (talk) 05:31, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it has many false positives and so it needs human oversight. — brighterorange (talk) 13:18, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Orange, I went ahead and did Oxygen manually, and someone else did Koli Point action. Thanks, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:51, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, for some reason I missed that these were requests and not just questions left on one that I already had done. My apologies! — brighterorange (talk) 00:53, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem; I was afraid something happened to you! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:54, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Soon-to-be FAC Fanny Imlay - :)

If you could run your script over Fanny Imlay (whenever you have a moment), I would really appreciate it. Awadewit | talk 03:46, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, done! — brighterorange (talk) 05:25, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, could you run your script on the references in this article?--CyberGhostface (talk) 16:46, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your wish is my slowly executed command. — brighterorange (talk) 23:04, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I appreciate it. :) --CyberGhostface (talk) 23:10, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orange, can you run through RNA interference? I think you've done it before, but for some reason, there are still a lot of hyphens on page ranges in the citations. Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:15, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I ran it, but it didn't find any changes because it skips things like "457-8", insisting that the first number be smaller than the second. That's pretty common though, so I should fix it. I probably won't get to it in the near future, though, because I just started a new job! — brighterorange (talk) 13:06, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, orange. I'll go work on those manually. I hope the new job is a good thing ! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:27, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So far so good, but it'll be hard to beat grad school. =) — brighterorange (talk) 04:30, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, it's all downhill once you're out of school and have to start paying the bills :-)) Thanks again! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 04:40, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again! could you run the script on the references of this article too? Thanks, Nergaal (talk) 06:40, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done! — brighterorange (talk) 13:06, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yikes, going on the main page on the 14th with bad, bad dashes :-) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:05, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did this too. — brighterorange (talk) 04:30, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, Orange; does anyone ever say thanks? Thanks :-)) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 20:51, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From one orange to a brighter one. SandyGeorgia said you can run a script on this article to clean up the em-dashes. If you have a chance, can you help out? Thanks. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 00:02, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Brighterorange. I was wondering whether you could run your script on Helena, as it's currently in peer review and hopefully soon a FAC. Thanks and best, PeterSymonds | talk 14:06, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would you mind running your script on this article? Thanks, Coemgenus 20:28, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Orange, would you mind running through this FAC? Thanks in advance, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:21, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Makeoutclub Wiki Entry

Hello,

I am hoping for some help with the makeoutclub.com entry on Wikipedia. The initial entry I had made last September seemingly cleared the deletion hurdle and then it was expanded much more elaborately by wiki user drhamad. Since then, it has not only been edited heavily but now is marked as a contender for deletion and I can't figure out why. I am looking for assistance wherever I can find it within wikipedia to save the article from being deleted.

Please let me know if you could help to make sure this article doesn't leave.

Thank you very much.
