The Totally Rad Show is a weekly video podcast produced by Team Awesome, LLC and distributed by Revision3. It consists primarily of reviews and reminiscences of pop-culture phenomena such as movies, video games, television programs, and comic books. The show debuted on March 27 2007, and is hosted by Alex Albrecht, Dan Trachtenberg, and Jeff Cannata. It is filmed and edited by Steve Koncelik. In 2008 the show was honoured with a People's Choice Webby Award.[1]

Format

The show generally opens with a re-enactment or re-interpretation of a scene from a popular movie or iconic pop-culture moment. For example, in the very first podcast, a the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark was parodied, featuring as props a can of whipped cream and an American Idol DVD. An opening dialogue introduces what will be discussed on the show, followed by various segments introduced by brief interstitial video shorts, which are sometimes produced and submitted by fans of the show. The segments vary from show to show, usually including reviews, discussions and current news about movies, television, video game, and comic book industries.

Occasionally, segments other than the regular topics of the show such as coverage of trade shows, holiday celebrations, or group gaming sessions are included. A recurring segment is the facetious Dan Becomes A Man, during which Alex or Jeff show Dan, the youngest member of the trio, how to do something he has never done before such as smoking a cigar or driving a car with a manual transmission. With the exception of on-location segments and the show-opening parodies, the show is filmed in front of a green screen. This allows the use of Chroma key to superimpose segment-specific backgrounds, gaming sessions, trailers and cut-scenes, as well as images of packaging or covers of the media being discussed. Although cameraman/editor Steve does not appear onscreen, he is sometimes heard speaking and also makes his presence felt through creative, artistic or informative additions to the recorded video.

The show is brought to a conclusion with a discussion of the sponsors and the reading of one or more viewer emails, or a discussion of posts on the Totally Rad Show forums at Revision3.com.

Distribution

The show is released weekly on Tuesdays at 3:00pm EST.[2] It is available to download in High Definition Quicktime as well as large and small Quicktime, WMV and XVID. An audio only version is also available in .mp3 format.

Theme song

The show's theme was written by the cast, with Jeff Cannata providing the voiceover. The final portion of the theme was sung by Alex Albrecht and Heather Stewart.

The theme lyrics:

Three rad dudes, with nothing better to do,
get abducted by the crew of the starship Alpha-2.
They're from the planet Q which, due to a space time loop, is stuck in '82
and must be rescued.
They need our heroes to discuss the latest news
and give their reviews of games and movies too.
Sure hope you're not confused. We swear this is all true.
Not just the premise to: The Totally Rad Show.
Totally Rad Show, totally rad. Totally Rad Show, totally rad.
Totally Rad Show, totally rad. Totally Rad Show, Totally Rad Show!

  4. ^ Though it was established that The Orange Box should not be separated by its contents when it came to listing games, Albrecht listed Portal alone anyway.
  5. ^ The skit recreated various skits from previous episodes, but had the hosts break out into singing "The Rainbow Connection" throughout.
