    ARTIST ARTICLES

IN THE WP:BAND SECTION. IT STATES THAT A MUSICAL ARTIST WHO HAS A SONG THAT IS ON THE BILLBOARD CHARTS IS NOTABLE ENOUGH FOR AN ARTICLE. DOES THE "BUBBLING UNDER HOT 100 SINGLES" COUNT? I KNOW IT IS A 25-POSITION ADDENDUM TO THE HOT 100 BUT NOT SURE IF THAT IS SUFFICIENT ENOUGH.

    Jaystylez561 (talk) 02:33, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't type in all-caps, it can be interpreted as shouting, which is rude. The problem you are going to have is that you need to have enough independent (i.e. not written by the subject) and reliable (see WP:RS) sources to add appropriate biographical information to the article. Even if the single has buzzed around just under the charts, as you indicate; there still needs to be reliable references for any biography of a living person. If there is nothing reliable to cite in writing your article, there's not much of a reason to write one. --Jayron32.talk.say no to drama 02:42, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Images

I don't know if this is just me, but some images' thumbnails aren't loading on some pages. When I click on the images, they show on the description page fine, so Idk what it is. I know Commons was down earlier and thumbs/uploads weren't working then, but I can now upload, so I figured the thumbs would be fine too. The articles in question are Meridian, Mississippi and History of Meridian, Mississippi, both of which have thumbs that won't display for me. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? --Dudemanfellabra (talk) 07:04, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    I can't see those thumbnails either. --59.95.103.25 (talk) 07:13, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Turns out if I change the size of the thumbs, they show up. Apparently it's only that specific thumbsize that's messed up. Sounds like a server problem to me? --Dudemanfellabra (talk) 07:44, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I can see the thumbs on the pages with no problem. Have you tried to bypass your cache? If that doesn't work, this might be a good topic to take to the Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). — QuantumEleven 07:46, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wow.. I didn't think about that haha. I tried purging the server, but I didn't think about doing anything on my side. Silly me. It worked. Thanks! --Dudemanfellabra (talk) 07:52, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, no, it worked for every image except one. File:Bonita Lakes 1.JPG's thumb still won't display on Meridian, Mississippi for me. Should I take this over to the Village pump? --Dudemanfellabra (talk) 07:56, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can see that image, but if you're still having trouble after bypassing your cache, I would take this to the village pump. Good luck at getting it fixed! — QuantumEleven 08:06, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also, image-server has been overloaded and flaky over the past few days. I had similar "some but not all images in an article"--no pattern, except that after a few hours they started working. DMacks (talk) 21:54, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Policy on rumors

I haven't found a clear policy on rumors. This discussion Ok_to_Use_Rumors_as_Sources_in_Wikipedia is relevant, but it is not a solid policy.

The item in question is a rumor in Maya Moore. At a minimum, the existence of the rumor needs a citation, but I don't want to go to the effort of tracking down a citation, or asking someone else to do so, if the result should still be removed.

    The sentence in question:

It is rumored that her choice of University of Connecticut over
The University of Tennessee Lady Vols, and Pat Summitt's suspicion
of recruiting violations on UConn's part,
caused her to end the schools' early highly anticipated
    home and home match-up.

What do others think - is this ok if properly sourced, or should it simply be removed?--SPhilbrickT 13:15, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If it is referenced, it is not "rumored". For example, if the reference is an article in the NY Times, it would replace "It is rumored..." with "As stated in the NY Times..." -- kainaw 13:19, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) If it's properly sourced, it should stay, since we wouldn't be making up the rumors, but rather, reporting that reliable sources think they exist. A great way to do this would be to mention the source, something like "According to Sports Illustrated, it was rumored . . .". TNXMan 13:20, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also... if the rumor is very popular, but proven false, it should stay and note reliable sources that reported the rumor (they deserve egg on their face for reporting false rumors) and reliable sources that print the retractions. -- kainaw 13:23, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Um, no. Rumors are rumors, even if reported in a reliable source. Either say "According to the New York Times, XXXX happened" or leave it out. If you have reason to doubt the validity of the New York Times report, then leave it out. We aren't here to document errors in another publication, we are here to build an encyclopedia. If you trust the report as factual, then cite it and move on. If you do not personally trust the report, and have other reliable sources which clearly disagree, then leave it out. To report a rumor merely because it showed up in a reliable source is a bad idea. --Jayron32.talk.say no to drama 13:31, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) WP:V should be the main policy to be considered here. If we can find a RS source for the "rumour", then it is probably something notable and should be included. If it is just a rumour, an RS would state that, and I think in such a case it is better to state that it is a rumour. If it is given as a fact, then it would not be a rumour as Kainaw said. This is not the same as some speculation appearing in a blog or something like that, which should not be included in Wikipedia. We have to use our judgment in a situation like this; there's no way to create rules to allow for every possible thing. ≈ Chamal talk 13:33, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    The NYT says:
As the story goes, suspicions were raised on how Auriemma might have landed Moore...
The NYT is a reliable source, but their statement isn't verifying that Summitt made the decision based upon violations, it merely asserts that some suspicions exist. I don't think that's strong enough to support the existing wording. maybe is should simply be reworded. However, I don't want to drag out a content discussion here, I'm trying to learn whether there are clear guidelines regarding the reporting of rumors.--SPhilbrickT 13:42, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi;

Is the addition of external links solely the right of article creators/editors, or can others - who would like to post an external link to a very closely related and relevant-to-the-article's-subject article - add links to the "External links" section of a Wikipedia article? (I've already read the Wikipedia guidelines on what constitutes appropriate/inappropriate external links.)

If others are allowed to do so, could you please point to the Wikipedia resources that describe how.

    Thanks! Maberly (talk) 16:00, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No one owns or controls wikipedia articles. If you edit an article, then you are one of that article's editors. If you have appropriate external links to add, go ahead and do so as explained at Help:Link#External links. Algebraist 16:04, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Maberly, if you add inappropriate links, another editor will end up removing them - but there is no harm in putting them in there. Just think to yourself "do these links add to the article, and are they non-advertising, non-spam, etc"... if the answer is Yes, follow Algebraist's advice. Moving new article to "live" wikipedia

I have created a new article after re-checking that this article doesn't exist. I created it by clicking on the red "create this article" link and logging into my wiki account. It was created on 7/13 and I have previewed and "saved" the page. But this new article - titled "Multi-probiotic" - is still not available on a wiki article search. How do I make this article live, to be viewed by the public? Currently, it just displays in my own wiki account. Or, is there a lag time I'm not aware of after saving the article before it can be displayed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Annamacd (talkcontribs) 16:25, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It will have to be moved from your user space to the main space, but at the moment I don't think it's ready. It's a little spammy - use of the ® and TM symbols is not appropriate in an encyclopedia. This was also reported at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2009 February 9#New Problem of Accessing Wikipedia from the Google Search Engine, but it was not solved. It may be an incompatibility involving a combination between Google, Wikipedia and your browser or something else on your computer. Which browser do you have? Does it happen when you copy the url to the address bar? Google's source on a search page for "Computer" says:
    <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer" class=l onmousedown="return clk(this.href,'','','res','3','')"><em>Computer</em> - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia</a>
A standard link would not contain the part
    class=l onmousedown="return clk(this.href,'','','res','3','')
Maybe that part tries to pass something Wikipedia cannot communicate correctly with your browser, but I don't know much about the topic. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:52, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Before creating an article, please search Wikipedia first to make sure that an article does not already exist on the subject. Please also review a few of our relevant policies and guidelines which all articles should comport with. As Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, articles must not contain original research, must be written from a neutral point of view, should cite to reliable sources which verify their content and must not contain unsourced, negative content about living people.
Articles must also demonstrate the notability of the subject. Please see our subject specific guidelines for people, bands and musicians, companies and organizations and web content and note that if you are closely associated with the subject, our conflict of interest guideline strongly recommends against you creating the article.
If you still think an article is appropriate, see Help:Starting a new page. You might also look at Wikipedia:Your first article and Wikipedia:How to write a great article for guidance, and please consider taking a tour through the Wikipedia:Tutorial so that you know how to properly format the article before creation. – ukexpat (talk) 19:51, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How to use Template:Random portal component

Using {{Random portal component}} on the "Selected article" and "Selected character" sections of Portal:A Series of Unfortunate Events, I have been unable to get the selected excerpts to alternate without purging the cache. Yet pages like Portal:The Simpsons alternate every time you refresh the page. Clearly I did something wrong.

These are the pages that fail to alternate (transcluded at Portal:A Series of Unfortunate Events):

    The Man in Question (gesprec) · (forðung) 21:45, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I found the problem. First, you don't need the seed parameter if you have the max number. It is redundant. The actual problem was that the random component template displayed like this:
    {{Random portal component|max=2|header=''Selected article''|subpage=Selected article}}

The quotation marks were not supposed to wrap the Selected articles, so it was supposed to be as follows:

    {{Random portal component|max=2|header=Selected article|subpage=Selected article}}

I've fixed everything now so you can continue creating more random components. Remember to update the "max" number with the amount of components. Hope this fixes everything. ZooFari 02:28, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for looking into it, but these changes have not solved the problem. I had wondered myself about the seed. As for the quotations marks, they are apostrophes set to italicize the title of the boxes in accordance with all other boxes on the page, and seem to have no effect on the situation (as I would imagine). Frankly, I'm stymied. Do the pages alternate on anyone else's computers with a simple refresh instead of purging? They do not on mine. Again, I cite Portal:The Simpsons as a page which successfully alternates. I have no idea what the difference could be. — The Man in Question (gesprec) · (forðung) 09:21, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
They seem to alternate when purging. They won't alternate all the time. The more components, the random it gets. Still a problem? We can continue on my talk page... ZooFari 15:13, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Avoiding sexual images

What is the best way to avoid images that contain nudity or sexual content?--Mikespedia (talk) 04:34, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

On Wikipedia? The only reliable way is to block images on the site altogether. There's a bit more information at Wikipedia:Options to not see an image. Algebraist 04:39, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Or simply don't visit pages likely to contain such images.  GARDEN  says no to drama 08:57, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's not clear what you mean by "best". There are various methods for avoiding certain kinds of content, and each method has its own combination of tradeoffs. For example, you could move to The People's Republic of China, where Internet censorship is evidently quite effective. But that would probably be inconvenient, depending on where you live now, and you might not agree with the censors' idea of what is acceptable. If you tell us more about what you typically read on Wikipedia, where you are running into objectionable images, and how much inconvenience you can tolerate, we might advise you better. --Teratornis (talk) 21:37, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The best way would be to simply avoid articles that might possibly have nudity or sexual content. Articles about nudism, for example, might well have nude illustrations. Articles about mathematics are less likely to. (Unless Tom Lehrer ever finishes his masterwork, Tropic of Calculus.) Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots 21:43, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I assume you mean for instance the <span class="plainlinksneverexpand">. Could be wrong. "plainlinks" works on Wikipedia but I'm not sure on the other bit.  GARDEN  says no to drama 09:40, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A search of the help desk archive gives this response from way back in 2005: "On "plainlinksneverexpand", see MediaWiki talk:Monobook.css and Template talk:Ref. The short breakdown: within an HTML element of class "plainlinks", external links do not get the arrow icon. I have added "plainlinksneverexpand" yesterday, it also suppresses the arrow icon, but additionally also URL expansion when printing. (URL expansion is the process that makes external links print like "[link text as shown on screen] (http://actual URL of that ext link here)".) School seal/logo image

I just read your message on my article which says, "There is a problem with the image storage. We are in the process of fixing it." I am very Sorry for the previous images that I had uploaded. It was my big mistake. I thought the photos would go automatically into my article when I first uploaded them. I've seen the school seal or logo templates of the other educational institutions and they are really "attractive" and thought if i can also insert one into mine. I've been tryin to learn how to create a template for my alma mater's seal but it is so difficult. I went berserk. I finally found the wikipedia site on how to insert school logo template last week (only) and I am now studying it carefully. May i therefore request you to please delete all photos that I had uploaded months ago and let me start all over again. I will then insert the school seal template when I feel confident in doing it. Thanks again and regards from Palengkero.Palengkero (talk) 09:38, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To insert images, use the following code: [[File:Ismael Mathay Sr. High School.JPG|200px|thumb|right]]

This will work despite the image server being in a bit of a huff at the minute.  GARDEN  says no to drama 09:44, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

However, the image you have uploaded is not in the public domain as you claim, but rather a logo. Plesae read the non-free content criteria to see if your image can be used on the website under a claim of fair use. Thanks.  GARDEN  says no to drama 09:47, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hello NODRAMA, i stand to be corrected. yes, that was my mistake months ago. It was a school logo that i had uploaded. but do i still need the copyright of my school logo although i am the creator of the very first and only existing website of the Ismael Mathay Sr. High School (since 2005)? so far, i am also the only and first one to "produce" an image of the school logo in the internet. Please advise me before i consider inserting my school logo template later. Thanks for your time.Palengkero (talk) 10:28, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's "Garden", NODRAMA is a link in my signature :) That shouldn't matter as the logo is obviously still copyright to the school (or the authority running the school). Its use on Wikipedia is subject to our non-free content criteria and requires a detailed fair use rationale. I have added the latter to the image page so it should be set for insertion into the article. Regards,  GARDEN  says no to drama 10:41, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
ooppps, sorry, I think i copied and pasted the wrong word. nonetheless, you have a nice signature. That would be a good title for a novel, "The Garden of Drama". who knows if there was really a "Garden of Eden" hahaha. anyhow, i think i own the school logo of Ismael Mathay Sr. HS. dya know that this article that i made in Wikipedia was a "Global News" and breaking news in the Philippines? Wikipedia is truly amazing. i dont actually live in the Philippines but as a nostalgic revisit, i wrote the history of my poor ole school, as you can see my signature. it was based from "palengke' where i went to high school (teardrops). Palengkero (talk) 11:19, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, guess so ;) Unfortunately I don't think you do own the logo as the copyright belongs to the organisation who use it (the school). And yes, Wikipedia is amazing :)  GARDEN  says no to drama 11:23, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, i wont be using the logo with Wikipedia then. I tried to email the school authorities a couple of months ago but it bounced back. who knows if they have computers in the school hahaha. i can only reach alumni/alumnae based in the US, Canada, Europe and some parts of Asia. However, many students and alumni including faculty in the Philippines have already accessed Wikipedia based from the Forums that were linked to my website. They were all very happy. BTW "garden", may i use other school photo that i have taken such as the school building or schoolground in lieu of Logo? otherwise, my photo hahaha Palengkero (talk) 11:48, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I uploaded the logo with an appropriate non-free use rationale and added it to the article. – ukexpat (talk) 13:55, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Wikipages as pdf

I am a regular user/reader of your website. However today(1st September 2007) while reading a thought came into my mind. What if the online material (page) available on the website can be downloaded in the form of a PDF document? It will save a user's time to search the same article everytime he needs it. Also if a user access the same page multiple times he might put different keywords and would get a different result each time. Also he will not have to log in to the internet each time he needs the same. This is beneficial for users in countries like mine where there are more dial up users and who are not connected on 24X7 basis. Whenever needed the PDF can be accessed from the hard disk. You need to move the page to the mainspace, but I want to give you a heads up that if you do, it will probably be deleted very quickly as spam/advertising. Please read our info on writing from a neutral point of view and conflict of interest. TNXMan 17:09, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There is also the fact that almost the entire article seems to be quoting from a website - which means that the text's copyright is owned by the website/article author, and so could not be reproduced here. As Tnxman says, your user name makes it clear that your account is for the PR of Bulle Rocke, and so has a conflict of interest. May I suggest that you make notes of the main facts to be put in an article and make a Request for an article to be written. You'd have to provide citations showing its notability (and advertising sites would not count!). PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 17:19, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Changing Several Wikipedia topic pages in a short time

For quite some time, I have been very interested in the restaurant industry as a business analyst. I have amassed a large collection of restaurant menus from well-known places at the time of their heyday (i.e. the Stork Club, the Copacabana, the Pump Room, etc.) I have scanned these menus and make them available at no charge on my personal website. Last evening, I sought to include a link to my Menu page on the wikipedia pages for a number of these historic (an out-of-business) places. Apparently, I made too many changes and got a notification that sometimes spammer make repeated changes to wikipedia pages.

After reviewing communication options, this seemed to be the only way to tell the community that I am not a spammer, just someone trying to share information with the community. My entire website is totally non-commercial and has no advertising. It is strictly a hobby. The Menus Page in question is www.jitterbuzz.com/menus.html and the community is welcome to verify that I am neither spamming nor attaining personal gain by giving away images of historical menus. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.59.114.26 (talk) 17:57, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make the fruits of your labours freely available, why don't you upload your scans to Wikimedia Commons which is designed to be a repository for media? I would also suggest that you create an account. If you do, head over to WP:SUL to automatically create an account on Commons (and all other Wikimedia projects). – ukexpat (talk) 18:25, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think a good way also to make clear you arent spamming is to provide a good edit summary to your edits. That tells people who are monitoring additions to wikipdia what the link actually is. happy editingOttawa4ever (talk) 18:34, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If the original menu is under copyright, (I assume generally to be the case), the fact that he or she has obtained a menu doesn't create the right to upload the scanned image, does it? And if the image isn't free, is it even OK to have a link to a site displaying such an image? I don't know the answers to these questions, although my guess is that neither is allowed I hope one of our copyright mavens will weigh in more definitively, or point OP to the right place to ask.--SPhilbrickT 19:15, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You are indeed correct, I should have known better and I have struck my comment. The place to ask about this would be WP:MCQ – ukexpat (talk) 19:19, 17 July 2009 (UTC).[reply]
My understanding of the copyright laws isn't very deep, but unless these menus are very old, then they would be under copyright. This would certainly apply if they company is still in operation, but I would think that even if the company no longer exists, there is a copyright holder somewhere and the OP is not the copyright owner. A copy of a copyrighted item is still copyrighted to the original copyright owner, as far as I know. Just my 0.02. PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 19:28, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
See the links under Commons:COM:EIC#Copyright, for example Commons:Commons:Image casebook#Posters which seems to be the closest case to restaurant menus. Commons:Help:Public domain tells how long one has to wait for copyrighted works to revert to the public domain. If you want to upload images to Commons that are protected by copyright, see Commons:COM:OTRS for a procedure to follow if you are able to obtain permission from the copyright holders. And for a bit of bad news, WP:EL#Restrictions on linking says:
    • "Material that violates the copyrights of others per contributors' rights and obligations should not be linked. Linking to websites that display copyrighted works is acceptable as long as the website has licensed the work. Knowingly directing others to material that violates copyright may be considered contributory infringement. If you know that an external Web site is carrying a work in violation of the creator's copyright, do not link to that copy of the work. Linking to a page that illegally distributes someone else's work sheds a bad light on Wikipedia and its editors."
Which means that despite the original poster's well-intentioned hobby, as well as the low probability that the copyright holder of a menu from a defunct restaurant would have a continuing interest in it, Wikipedia should not contain links to an external site that displays content in violation of copyright law. The original poster could get around this by obtaining permission to publish the menus freely and documenting that permission with our OTRS procedure. --Teratornis (talk) 20:52, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have visited the website and some of the menus appear to possibly date to prior to 1923. Any menu that does is in the public domain and may be uploaded to the Commons. If the event you know the identity of the author of any particular menu, and that person died more than 70 years ago (i.e., they died on July 18, 1939 or earlier) that menu too is in the public domain.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:01, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Official web site of biographical subjects

Many infoboxes have a field for the official web site of the subject of the article. The links are often placed in the external links section. Are there any guidelines for/against this practice? Anything that says it should just be in the infobox and not the ext. links section as well? Thanks, Dismas|(talk) 03:44, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not really. There's no guideline regarding infoboxes; the relevant wikiproject would usually decide what needs to be included in them. In this case, it would be useful to have the official website in the infobox for easy access and reference. Wikipedia:EL#Maintenance_and_review says that "duplicative links may be deleted" so I guess that would apply. When it's included in the infobox and the external links section, that would be a duplicated link and one should be removed according to this. Since the infobox would present it better, I think the one in the External links section has to go. ≈ Chamal talk 03:55, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. I don't think the fact that the link is available in a totally different place is a good reason to remove it from the external links section. A reader may well look for the link in the external links section, expecting it to be there, and be frustrated to not find it. Algebraist 04:51, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My feeling on this is that they should both be kept on the page. As Algebraist says, a reader may look for it at "external links" (not even looking at the infobox). Dismas - if both are kept, it should still be kept on the page if it is a stub, as eventually it will become a full-fledged article! About Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Article

I don't understand why the picture of bhutto was deleted, even though i have done it with my true spirit !!!!!

The death of "Zulfikar Ali Bhutto" was on 4th April 1979, so i dont understand why people contradict it with the date of coup of General Zia ul-haq, which was on 5th July 1977 (meaning his [bhutto] government has been toppled) .. so why people are mixing both dates.....

Help! Messages not being displayed on my talk page

For 4 months - since March 9 - I have not had any visible new posts. I can see new posts when I click on edit this page, and I moved some problem edits up to the top which made them appear on the talk page. I have tried testing it with dummy posts but nothing is registering.

All my tests are shown in the edits and the history. If anyone can help sort this problem out, I would be very grateful. Rikstar409 10:24, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Should be fixed now (and you should have loads of posts that appear to come from me - not my fault, honest!)
The problem was <ref> tags that weren't enclosed in <nowiki> tags - I added the <nowiki> tags and all should now be good.

It went wrong in [3] and ~~~~ didn't expand to signatures and time stamps after that. They all expanded to TFOWR's signature and the current time when TFOWR fixed the page. The page history shows who posted what when. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:26, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've had this happen before (this isn't the first time I've fixed a mis-behaving talk page!) - is there any easy way to deal with this, or is it just a case of trawling through the history and using {{unsigned}} (or is there a better template)? Font styles

How can I change the font face of what I'm typing into Rockwell Extra Bold font face?--Launchballer (talk) 11:24, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you're referring to the font of your actual question, that can't be changed, AFAIK (your talk page is the only place where I believe it's possible). You can change the font of your signature. Head over to this page for how to do so. TNXMan 12:24, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No! Odd, I fixed some image vandalism recently and it was straightforward. I've changed to a different image until this is resolved.

The log indicates something went wrong on 9 July.[4] It may require a commons admin to sort out. I have posted to commons:User talk:Martin H.#File:Tony Blair WEF 2008 cropped.jpg. Google's cache shows the vandalized version was on Tony Blair 16 July so I guess it has been there since 9 July. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:14, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that when Google's cache says "It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on 16 Jul 2009", that only applies to the text and not the images, so I cannot say whether a vandalized image was displayed on 16 July. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:38, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I answered on my talkpage already. I dont know how this is possible. The original image was cropped by Kelson from an WEF image, it was vandalized with some rotten.com image of a dead foot, I deleted this vandalism and also the following revert by Timrollpickering, just to keep the image in the original uploaders gallery. Now a poster of the lemon party is indicated as Kelsons 2008-03-27 upload. I dont know how this is possible without any entry in the log or file history. Needs technical assistance, maybe it is something like commons:File:2001-2002 Holden VX II Commodore Executive sedan 03.jpg added to commons without a log entry or a filepage (no history). Im realy interested who vandalized the image. --Martin H. (talk) 14:21, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Disambigaution

If I can't find the exact article to fix a disambiguation, what is the correct procedure: (a) leave as is; (b) tag it with {{dn}}; (c) redlink it so that an article may get created by another; (d) change to point at Wiktionary? I can not see the content of the page you created, and so cannot judge it, however I assume C.Fred, the user who blocked you, knew what he was talking about and so please don't recreate the article, instead we welcome you to edit constructively in other areas after your block expires, if you would like more information about how to edit constructively please post a question about it here after your block expires. Best wishes SpitfireTally-ho! 21:48, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
See Wikipedia:Why was my page deleted?. In your case, the article doesn't seem to indicate encyclopedic importance— the musical project may be important to you, but including articles just to keep someone happy will make Wikipedia unmanageable. Before recreating the article again, I suggest you find reliable sources that discuss the project and create the article in your sandbox. If you are unable to find independent sources, then perhaps the project isn't notable yet and hence unsuitable for Wikipedia (but maybe suitable in the future if you work hard on your music). When your block expires your are free to edit articles, but self-promotion isn't appreciated. --59.95.99.203 (talk) 21:59, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've never been able to understand how to find out about why articles have been deleted. For example, the following deletion does not even appear in the deletion log of the editor:

Somebody tagged the article with {{subst:prod|reason}} and it was deleted after 5 days without any discussion. Do you remember the exact title under which you saved your article? Algebraist 23:03, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Chief Medical Information Officer was the title. I know that I saved it because the first time I did not, so I went back recreated by draft buy copying and editing a similar page and then gave the edit a name and saved it, made more edits, saved it, etc. Did this about 4 times but as you demonstrated, the log shows none of that. Clearly there must be a flaw in the system that does not issue a error message if you try saving and it is not capable of completing the command. —Preceding unsigned comment added by HITfirefighter (talkcontribs) 23:22, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You said you saved it in user space, but Chief Medical Information Officer is not a user-space title. Do you remember the user-space title? —teb728 t c 23:36, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I can find no trace of it. Are you sure of the following:
    1. You clicked "Save page" like when you posted here and not "Show preview".
    2. There was no message telling you it could not be saved or asking you to do something else after you clicked "Save page".
    3. The page was displayed in your browser after you saved it.
    4. You were at the English Wikipedia.
    5. You were logged in to the account HITfirefighter and not User:Alexjohnas or any other.
When did you first save it? I could only find User:Alexjohnas with Wikipedia's search function but it takes some time to update the search index after changes. If your browser had lost your login during the session (this often happens) then it might have been saved under an IP address for the used computer. Do you see it if you log out and click Special:Mycontributions? If you reveal the IP address then I can also check for deleted edits (which are only visible to admins) by that IP. Strange site

I recently discovered that when I type wiki: (with the colon) in the search bar, it leads me to a strange site which I have never heard of. I know that there are certain prefixes for other Wikimedia wikis, but this does not appear to be one of them. In fact, there is a page there that states that it is completely the opposite of Wikipedia. Does anyone know what the purpose of that site is? 95j (talk) 00:51, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article for our corporation has minimal info and is tagged "This United States corporation or company article is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it." I'd like to improve that. Is it permitted to:

    1. add listings of trademarks used by the company?
    2. list brands operated by the company?
    3. list/link web sites owned by the company in external links?

Note, there are many of each if we list them all. It could feel spammy to some.

    Help with categories

    Resolved
     –  – ukexpat (talk) 02:57, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorting through the various school categories in an attempt to get schools into the most precise category required. As part of this, I created Category:Girls' schools in Pakistan, named just as instructed. It seems to work fine, but I'm curious as to why it's listed under "G" in Category:Girls' schools when every other category is sorted by the country name. They all "look" the same to me and I'd kind of like to know what I did wrong before I start making a bunch of others... Matt Deres (talk) 02:45, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

They are sorted with a pipe. For example, Category:Girls' schools in Australia is categorized by [[Category:Girls' schools|Australia]] which sorts by Australia. See Wikipedia:Categorization#Sort order. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 02:50, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see now. Thank you. Matt Deres (talk) 02:53, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c [x2]) Fixed. See this edit for a working explanation. In short, categories display alphabetically by the first letter of the category name by default unless you pipe the category to a different format, in which case it displays by whatever first letter you have piped the name to. So by starting the piped category name with Pakistan, it sorts in the parent category by that country's name.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:54, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Creating a Page

There's a topic, a YouTube video specifically, that I believe has received significant coverage to deserve its own page. However, I'm uncertain if it's truly enough, and am not sure how a page for such a subject would be organized, formatted, etc. Would someone be willing to judge if the video deserves a page (I have links of its extensive coverage by third-party sources), and how to structure a page for it? The Clawed One (talk) 03:33, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well if it has 3rd party sources then why not just create it? Formatting issues can be dealt with later..anyway, go ahead and post the links. :)--59.95.100.45 (talk) 04:16, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What is the video? YouTube videos are rarely notable, but if there are third party, reliable sources involved, then this one might be an exception to that rule. If you link to the video, we can probably figure out a way to structure the page. Thanks, The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 04:21, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The video is "Buffy vs Edward", which combines footage of the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer with footage from the movie Twilight. The video has been covered by Change.org, AfterEllen.com, The L.A. Times blog, Newsarama and WIMN. These are just the five I'm confident are reliable sources, but a quick Google search of the video's title will turn up many more sites reporting on it, though I believe some are fansites, forums, etc. The Clawed One (talk) 04:26, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Um - actually all five of those links are blogs. Black Kite 09:22, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Non-notable content

I don't think it there is a specific place where that is covered. However, unless there are reliable sources that discuss the table of contents specifically, it shouldn't be included. Wikipedia cannot cover every single word within a book, as that would qualify as undue weight. TNXMan 12:36, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The lists of TV series episodes

In an article of the name "List of *** episodes", is it allowed to put something such as "Will Mr. *** hide the secret and survive?"^1, or "The roommate of messy Mr. DEF, Miss XYZ, is a neat freak."

^1This is usually found at the end of the summary of one episode.--Mikespedia (talk) 08:24, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it's not exactly forbidden, but it's not how an encyclopedic plot summary should be written either. Moreso, it's a warning sign that the summary may be a copyright violation. - A good plot summary summarizes the plot and does nothing else. It doesn't tease, avoid spoilers, comment, analize, or theorize. (See also: Wikipedia:How to write a plot summary) Goodraise 09:11, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If so, do you want to release the images to the public domain (assuming you still hold copyright)? Or another license? See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. Question

    Why are Wikipedia searches now case-sensitive? 121.220.109.214 (talk) 11:45, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Which type of search are you referring to? If you click the button saying "Search" below the search box then there should be no case sensitivity. If you click the "Go" button or click the Enter or Return key on your keyboard after writing a search term then you will jump straight to a page with that capitalization if it exists. If there is no page with that capitaliztion but one or more pages with other capitalizations then you jump to one of them. If there is no page with title match when capitalization is ignored then you should get a case insensitive search. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:59, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The Go button version. It used to brng up a page even if it didn't use that capitalisation. But now, it only brings up pages that use only that capitalisation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.220.109.214 (talk) 12:34, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You might find what you are looking for in the article about Ankh. If you cannot find the answer there, you can try asking your question at Wikipedia's Reference Desk. They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer just about any question in the universe (except about how to use Wikipedia, which is what this help desk is for). I hope this helps. Editing rejected

Background: The article Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge is one of the best wikipedia articles I've ever seen. I am new to the editing process but I studied the rules and tried to follow the correct path toward a good edit. I was driven toward a goal of making the article factually perfect because it contained a small number of factual errors. It also contained a small number of subjective phrases and statements. Both categories of imperfection seem to have arisen by reliance on internet-available source material as of the summer of 2008. The user who created the article apparently does not have access to the most recent academic work on the subject, c. 2006. In hope of making the article more perfect, I spent several hours editing the article. I clicked the Save button, printed out the changes I'd made, then launched a research project to pick up anything I'd missed on the first edit attempt. Today none of the editing I'd done yesterday appears in the article. What did I do wrong? Jaxmrclean (talk) 13:12, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
