SEMI-RETIRED

What does this mean? I wont be editing wikipedia as frequently as before, The edits I will be making though will be for maintaining current page work/creations. I will also still be actively involved in RFA requests. I expect this semi retirement to last for some time due to various time commitments in the next year, I will be back , but cheers and happy editing .

Help needed

I looked into this, it seems Duke has compromised with Alanysts proposal and placed the `no index` stub on his page. Which should mean that your username should no longer be visible in a search engine. Tips for essay writing

18-March-2009: Many essays get removed from the category, so there are some issues to note. All essays can be judged as Wikipedia public-relations, so avoid too much negative talk. Try to emphasize a better future, or potential solutions: there are lots of people to help with anything (if you can reach them). Others have disguised criticism, in the form of semi-humor, but beware that some admins live in strict societies, where negative talk is swiftly censored. That's just the way those people were raised: "The nail that stands up gets hammered down". They tend to squash anti-talk and feel no sympathy for apologies. Because Wikipedia has over 9 million registered users, plus 9 million anonymous IP users, the audience you face is some portion of those 18 million people, plus others. Hence, try to create the best essay you can, perhaps revising several times in an off-line text file. I sometimes forget to mention the current time, but it is good to include "in mid-2009" (or such) because many issues change within 5 months. Currently, about 35% of English or German Wikipedia is written by teenagers, half of Wikipedia is under 30 years of age. Remember at the bottom, put category:

Careful when reverting page blanking

Just a heads-up. Sometimes page blanking is not vandalism. For example, Drobizam was blanked by the original author, indicating a desire for the article to be deleted. I deleted it under WP:CSD#G7. The correct action would have been to re-tag the blank article with a {{g7}} instead of reverting the page blanking. Thanks! — LinguistAtLarge • Talk  21:37, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

I would not see a problem with using roll back providing it wasnt used with software (like huggle), And also using multiple browser windows i dont think thats a problem either for this. Exactly as its said there, any example of this will do (providing its been in an article for over a year). A good example of this was the jacques plante article. Some edits were made 3 years or so ago and his statitistics for 5 years were deleted. No one noticed for over a year or so, that would be a good example. Really dont know how many people read WP: reward board but i figured for those who do why not a lil reward. I tried to do this once myself when i first started with wikipedia, it takes about a day I think. I would imagine a tech savy person could find a way around using pop ups to help, but your still fighting vandalism and going through the process and thats what its all about. It's not hard to do it (I do it when I'm not using Huggle). You activate navigational popups in Gadgets (My preferences), then you go to recent changes. If you want to view a diff, you put your cursor over the word 'diff', and a popup will show you the diff. If it's vandalism, click on the word 'diff' and if you have Twinkle activated, you click Rollback (VANDAL). Also, on your user page you mention that you will give a barnstar out to the person who fixes your revert count. I can do that, but I need to know a time when you won't be editing, that way I don't have to keep recounting (all times in UTC please). Griffinofwales (talk) 16:16, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Hehe, what would that be, 3 awards potentially? (My worry there would be three antivandalism awards from the same account lol, might not be as prestigious but i could find away to make them different and noticable). Whole idea is working to reduce vandalism, and why not get recongnition for it? For the user page, Nah its cool just a little easter egg award for those reading the user page (that is unless you really want to). Wont stop you form doing another 100, Not really defined that its a limit of one per person (kinda implies it but doesnt say that), but there can always be exceptions for great anti vandalism work. The sneaky ones are hard. One clever IP tried changing the Pope's page (this was 2 months ago[the content was about gays and lesbians, but when you read it, it didn't seem like vandalism]), and it probably would have stayed there, but I picked it up through recent changes. The best ones for reverting sneaky vandalism are the content developers. They know what they're writing about so they know what's true and what's not. I will look through some of the articles I specialize in to see whether I find any. But, usually the vandalism finds you, not the other way around (i.e. you are reading an article [for informational purposes] and you find a false statement). Hmmm didnt realize Up (film) redirects there, Probably due to it being the mainsream search since the other films are older. Quick read of Wikipedia:Naming conventions (films) explains that disambiguating films of the same name, the year of its first public release should follow in its article name. So long as there is no risk of ambiguity or confusion with another existing Wikipedia article the film could just take its name, but in this case theres two others in 76 and 84. Hey, I saw this on the reward board a while ago, and I found a vandalism edit that is more than two years old. It's the addition of a spam external link in a highschool article. Here is the diff of it being added in. It wasn't made into a link, it's just plain text, so no one ever removed it. Its still on the article, but I will remove it as soon as you respond. The link was for a high school reunion apprently. But since its been broken for two years and no one has fixed it and the page no longer exists and has been left in its present shape, Its hard to tell wether the website was spam or not. I think the contributer didnt intend on it being vandlaism as some of the other material that he added was valid but it still was embedded. deleting a page on the Yenice Cag Private High School

I was trying to delete the article I copied and pasted under this name because I wasn't sure the article was about the same school. Subsequently, the information I was trying to add was the only information on the page. I think that's why it seemed like I was trying to delete the whole article. But I think I'm fine for now because I rechecked the information and it seems that the article is about a bunch of schools of which Yenice Cag Private High School is one. yep no worries. Just be a bit careful that you develop the article a bit further. Usually the best way to start an article is to model it after another school article add a few secondary sources, (some websites that arent from the school but talk about why the school is important and notable), and the page is good to go. If it lacks these things some people may put a deletion tag on the article. In this case if your still developing it there will be a tag you can place called 'hang on' (itll be listed in the box if its proposed for deletion). Re: Minor query about COIN

Hello, to be honest I'm fairly new to the COIN process. But in general, I don't see what the harm would be, and I'm assuming in the situation you've proposed that the editor himself isn't blocked (only his article is deleted). What would probably be most appropriate is to request a "courtesy blanking" from an administrator, I've seen that done in various places like AfD discussions where an editor wants information removed for privacy or other reasons. It's unlikely that the actual history of those pages would be deleted, however, so if someone wants to investigate the editor's past activity for some reason they can do so. For example, let's say that the editor starts some trouble somewhere down the line on some other issue and is brought to the Administrators' noticeboard, it would be possible to show his prior behavior in those old discussions through history links. But at the same time a casual reader wouldn't run across his name, so his privacy is pretty much upheld. I hope that helps. -- Atama^chat 16:18, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Not sure if bot-created article with error count as vandalism or not, but I have found one error that is in an article for 1.5 years. In Acanthochitona, the taxonomy authority year should be 1821, not 1921. The error was there since the article was created and I have just corrected it.[1] I have external evidence verifying my claims.[2] (Just for background info, there are multiple taxonomy authority with last name "Gray", but only one is alive in 1900's and that individual studies spiders, not chiton) OhanaUnited^{Talk page} 02:57, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

I've nominated File:Puzz3dny.JPG for deletion at Commons, since it seems to me that the puzzle itself is copyrighted by Hasbro and therefore the image as a whole cannot be free. However, if you'd like to write a non-free use rationale for it, I can undelete the original version here on Wikipedia (which was deleted when the image was moved to Commons). Thank you for keeping me in the loop. Unfortuneatly Id like to keep it but i think your right about the image. I cannot really justify it as being free (though id like too). The only thing i can think of is that it helps describe the notability of the puzzles and what they are and considering that one puzzle was their rarest and hardest to find i thought it would be appropriate to explain the product, however; would possibly an alternative photo merely showing the pieces (not identifying the paticular puzzle) be a better image? Or would that still be against copy right? Willing to discuss ( I dont have a commons login so ive responded on my talk page Ottawa4ever (talk) 17:53, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject TRANSWIKI

Hi. In light of recent events and community concerns about the way in which content is transferred I have proposed a new wikiproject which would attempt to address any of the concerns and done in an environment where a major group of editors work together to transfer articles from other wikipedias in the most effective way possible without BLP or referencing problems. U of Ottawa

I know you're knowledgeable about U of Ottawa. Is there any chance you could take a look at the athletics and fraternities/sororities sections? They could use some major expansion and some of the Greek organizations might be wrong/missing. Thanks for the query. I dont have much information about fraternities/sorities at U of O. I was going to dive into womens hockey for an article this weekend. Interestingly this article; Ottawa Gee-Gees could partially be merged back into the main article. It would fill out the athletics section. The only real thing wed need are references for most of the facts we bring over. but i could expand a bit of the athletics at the university in my search this weekend as i gather some sources. Thanks for you support. That RFA was one of the worst I've seen. An editor thought that I was acting in bad faith on AfDs, but later removed it calling his own comments rubbish. An editor said that I assume bad faith and was referring to himself. He was obviously acting in bad faith because he asked me to nominate an article for deletion of someone that he was in a dispute with. The self-nomination comment was the weirdest comment ever. I wanted to say something there for balance purposes, but the RfA had closed. FleetCommand tends to act a little nasty with almost anyone that disagrees with him (this isn't an aspersion -- there's a reference thread in my talk page archive). If the article you referred to was Montreal Stars, I see no reason at all that you wouldn't have a claim to use a "non-free logo to illustrate the primary subject". Denis is not currently a professor at uOttawa. The entry should at least say former professor. The other reason that the entry should not be included is that he is only one of many current hosts. It seems some news paper articles have him as Chauncy Kirby, But his canadian census records[4] indicate it is spelt as Chauncey (assuming this is the right record). Zelda Collection and SNES emulation

It turns out that the Zelda Collection you referred to in this edit didn't include aLttP, reportedly because the GBA remake was still being sold at that time, so that disc included NES and N64 emulation but left out SNES. Do you have another example? Anomie⚔ 12:19, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

You are indeed correct. I was mistaken. I am sure its happened before on other complimations on the game cube. I have no source and i dont think it is an emulation, but Mega man 7 (in the anniversary collection) might (and i stress might) be a type of snes rom. There could indeed be others id have to think of them though....Beyond all this, the wording you used in your subsequent edit after mine is just fine. Sorry for the confusion. Thank you for a prompt reply Ottawa. The website is there and shows the list of projects that have been done till 2004 and the website up-gradation has started and would be completed with a couple of weeks time. You mention that the website of the organization doesnt serve as a secondary source and only a primary source, then please check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nespak - Nespak Pakistan which only presents two references that are of its own site (no secondary sources). There are also many statements in that article that need citations for e.g the last sentence. This is common for numerous articles concerning pakistani companies (I can give you the article names too if you want) With these emerging pakistani companies and organizations its very hard to find secondary sources since the primary sources (their own websites) are rare. I believe it is for this very reason why wikipedia launched WikiProject Pakistan to improve wikipedias coverage of pakistan.

In all fairness Ottawa, I feel that ZEL's article has more secondary sources and more notability ( even in its un updated website) than NESPAK(that article doesnt even have one) if you need a comparision, one can google both organizations and compare its notability. I dont see how ZEL is not as notable like NESPAK or other articles on pakistani organizations. I would request you to kindly remove the afd from the article please.

btw. by ZEL, I mean the Zishan Engineers article

Wether Nespak or other articles (The Zishan Engineers article) on wiki do or do not meet notability requirements is up for any editor to provide input who reads the article. I have not read nor assessed the NESPAK article yet. But i have read the Zishan Engineers article. The latter I felt needed secondary sourcing, My own search was fruitless, and perhaps their may be something out there. But In the recreation no secondary sourcing was provided still. If you think the article you read (nespak) is not notable you are welcome to begin a deletion discussion about that or other articlesWP:AFD, or best yet try to improve them if possible by finding secondary sourcing. But generally I find this a good read about other articles existing when another was deleted; Wikipedia:Other stuff exists. Its not a policy piece but a good essay reflecting some opinions of other wiki editors in view of deletion discussions. If you feel that you could get Zishan Engineers together though in some time, you could begin the article within your user space here; User:Uzairsyedahmed/Zishan Engineers (click and create at the redlink, that is your userspace). This will give you the time necessary in order to find some reliable secondary sourcing and allow you to launch the article properly when you find secondary sourcing. See Wikipedia:First_article for some useful tidbits. When you create (if you do at your userspace), place this tag at the top; {{Possible article}}. This will inidcate that this is a draft article and it will not show up on any searches on google (any search egine) until it is ready. This cant be indefinete because its would be a fake article (See Wikipedia:FAKEARTICLE ) if it were (usually some say a page can be kept in user space less than a few months). I did discuss the above question with Schuminweb who stated that general thrust of the deletion of the article was that the organization's own site is insufficient either for the A7 "claim" to notability, or the WP:CORP real notability. I am given to understand that an organization's own website can be used to guage the notability? In that case, should I revise my article after the new website is uploaded reflecting the latest developments of the organization? It is hard for me to find secondary sources other than what I had shown in the article, I will still keep looking. I read the other stuff exists page of wikipedia and it mentions an analogy that if x exists which is equally famous so should this. Am i wrong in using analogies of articles on pakistani organizations to compare with mine? Not exactly, im refering mostly to the caption; Plenty of articles exist that probably should not. Equally, because articles must wait for someone who is interested in the subject to notice they are missing before they are created, a lot of articles do not exist that probably should. So just pointing out that an article on a similar subject exists does not prove that the article in question should also exist; it is quite possible that the other article should also be deleted but nobody has noticed it and put it forward for AfD yet for the other stuff exists section. An organization's website can be used to compliment the article but a secondary (apart from the company) reliable source is needed to ascertain the companies notability. In fact The definition of notability isnt that the company is not notable, its just the article has not established the companies notability if it exists in the forms that were deleted, and until that is shown its hard to keep the article. So a bit more specific to your queries, You could find some reliable secondary sourcing (not the company website) and work on the page in your userspace (see above). Theres no time line when you have to start you can tonight if you wnat, so long as you keep working at it and place the {{Possible article}} tag on your develop userspace and not indefinetaly keep it there it should be ok. When the new website launches, then info from that can also be applied at your userspace article, but bottom line secondary sourcing apart from the company website needs to be provided before it can see the mainspace. After thats done it can be launched to the mainspace. Do keep in mind any conflicts of interest if necessary when creating this article See WP:COIN for background. Video game magazines are good ones (nintendo power). If you have access i think you could check NP Sept 1991, or the NP players guide on the game called amrio mania (but those are older and you might just not have access to them. Sadly i dont anymore. An update from adopt a user

Hi there Ottawa4ever! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.

On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.

Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.

I dont know much about history articles otherwise I would contribute a statement on the dispute. However what i do find in content disputes is that consensus needs to be established on an issue. Consensus, loosely defined, means those with an interest in the article in majority agree wether something should be included/excluded, or if both you and the other editor agree to a resolution which isnt disputed by any other third party. You have both stated opinions on the matter, what would be good is if other editors also contributed their opinion as well on the statement (unless both you agree with the current version of the article). In the case where you still disagree theres two things you could do; (1) - you can tag the section by adding in the text at the top {{Disputed-section}} This may encourage participation from other editors, (2) you can go to WP:Third Opinion and seek an unbiased thrid opinion, - I would do this for you guys, but Im not comfortable that I understand the History of the land fully to provide what id say is an educated opinion on the matter. Otherwise we get into canvassing which just doesnt give us the neutral opinions we want in a content dispute. Details are here; Help:Archiving a talk page; but basically all you have to do, is create a new sub page like you normally do for sand box, call it Archive 1 instead of sand box. Then Cut and paste the material you want to archive into the new archive page you made. The edit history will remain on your main talk page with this method. After you've archived the text you can create a link to it on your user page. Im no huge fan of archives myself, but it is easy to see the current discussions. Work Team Together for World Women's championship

I note the reversion of my edits by Ahering@cogeco.ca to have this article conform to WP standards by deleting the "How To" stuff inserted by him, and your comments that the changes I made are proper. Thanks for requesting the third-party opinion, as hopefully will diffuse his confrontational style.

Just to put this in context, I have had numerous contentious conflicts with this editor on style issues. He has a ton of knowledge about the subject of fire stops, and contrary to clear WP policy, believes that gives him the right to insert details into multiple articles with undue weight, original research, and personal experiences, some without proper reference (as you have pointed out with this article) and much in a style similar to this page which includes multiple photographs with very captions with unneeded detail. They are unlike any other WP article I have seen, and results in more of a blog. He seems bent on trying to explain to the world what his personal achievements are, rather than contributing to the project in conformance with established guidelines. (For example, a while back, he tried to insert photographs of himself into various articles under the guise of demonstrating emotions, clearly with the intent of just trying to get his face into WP. Of course, others quickly reverted those edits and explained to him the obvious, which was it was clearly inappropriate.) This is regretful, as again, he really does know a lot about the subjects on which he comments, which is useful to the project overall.

I will wade back in, but in setting expectations, I hope the discussion of this article will not continue down the path as others in which he has been involved, which is more of what you already seen from him - his experience and knowledge and your lack thereof regarding the technical subject, claims that revisions are "unsubstantiated" even though WP policy basis was provided, and off-topic generalizations and opinions. The previous conflicts have eventually ended up with the article in conformance to WP guidelines, but it may take a while, and it may not be pleasant. Cheers. Seems as though a routine hiring policy issue in the news; per WP:CORPDEPTH. Im not convinced., of the article showing notability- that is 'I' some others may show a different opinion and your more than welcome to seek their advice. I would be careful though with a few things; namingly the wiki page appearing self promotion for the company; See [7] where the article is being advertised as finally launced by the company- this kinda gives the impression of WP:COIN which may attract for this article extra scrutinty. Adopt-a-user
