Remark

Hi Btyner. I have one remark. I think it is good if you put edit summaries more often when you contribute. They are often helpful for people who happen to see your edits on their watchlist. I know one can look at the diff, but a simple explanation in the edit summary helps too. Thanks. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 03:51, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image Tagging Image:Nox.png

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Nox.png. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hello. I just came across this article. It was not in the list of statistical topics, so I added it. If you have created other articles that belong on that list and are not there, could you add them?

There was just one other, Control variate which I have added. Btyner 21:54, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The term quadratic form doesn't actually mean anything different from what it means in other areas of mathematics; it's just that one is using quadratic forms in a particular way. The article should probably reflect that. Michael Hardy 19:58, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I debated for a long time how to incorporate this into the main article, but eventually gave up and put it in its own. I was hoping one of the authors of Quadratic form would know the best way to do this. Btyner 21:54, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling

"Fulfil" is the British spelling, and "fulfill" is the American spelling. Planet had already established itself as using the British spelling ("barycentre" etc.), and so should use "fulfil". — Wereon 00:02, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noticed that you placed the uncategorized tag on to Michael District. How did you miss the fact that the opening line contained 'poop'? Anyway, it did have categories, it had just been vandalised... Might be worth checking in future. Cheers-Localzuk(talk) 23:45, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I changed the data fusion page into a disambiguation page. I could't find any use of the term data fusion on the page for meta-analysis, so I think some explanation should be added for why that is a relevant link. Xpontus 14:57, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Statistician help needed

The WikiProject Vandalism Studies (Wikipedia:WikiProject Vandalism studies) just finished its first study and I was hoping that you being a statistician could help us formalize our findings. You can find our draft conclusions here [1]. Here's an excerpt of what we found so far:

The current study analyzed a sample pool of 100 random articles. Within these 100 articles there were a total of 668 edits during the months of November 2004, 2005, and 2006. Of those 668 edits, 31 (or 4.64%) were a vandalism of some type. The study's salient findings suggest that in a given month approximately 5% of edits are vandalism and 97% of that vandalism is done by anonymous editors. Obvious vandalism is the vast majority of vandalism used. From the data gathered within this study it is also found that roughly 25% of vandalism reverting is done by anonymous editors and roughly 75% is done by wikipedians with user accounts. The mean average time vandalism reverting is 758.35 minutes (12.63 hours), a figure that may be skewed by outliers. The median time vandalism reverting is 14 minutes.

Thanks. Remember 02:26, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FYI - Vandalism project

Thanks a lot for your idea about random edits. We are now proposing to implement your plan for our second study (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Vandalism studies/Study2#Formal proposal for study). We would greatly appreciate any further input you might have on how to structure such a study to make sure that all of our results are statistically significant. Thanks Remember 23:47, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bias

Hi! In your recent edit to bias (statistics), you said an unbiased test is one for which the power of the test exceeds the significance level. Do you have a reference for this? I am not familiar with this terminology.

BTW, disambiguation pages are supposed to only contain only one link per entry (see MOS:DAB). --Zvika (talk) 18:30, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Yates Analysis, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.sbtionline.com/nist/eda/section3/eda35i.htm. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 17:19, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article Randomized block design, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. BJBot (talk) 18:00, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whenever you have a major change to Wikipedia

...like, for example, if you notice that numerous, numerous articles have something "wrong" with them, it's usually a good idea to take it to talk first. If your suggestion is a good one, it will reach consensus quickly, and chances are you won't even need to do most of the work to implement the change. If your suggestion is a mistaken one, as it was with {{lowercase}}-ing a bunch of articles, then you'll have saved yourself a lot of work that is going to be reverted anyway. Either way, it's always less work to ask questions first and shoot later. Happy editing! Robert K S (talk) 05:56, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Box-Cox distribution

I've just added this to the list of statistical topics. Again, if you know of other articles suitable for inclusion that aren't there, could you add them?

That list has long been essentially a bare list with no organization. I think it would be possible to bifurcate it into two lists, one like the list of mathematics articles and one and organized list like the list of geometry topics.

I've thought, although not systematically, of organizing a statistics WikiProject, just as there is a mathematics WikiProject (at Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics) whose talk page (at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics) functions as a forum for general discussion of articles in the field. Probability and statistics sub-project?

Dear Btyner,

I recently proposed starting a "probability and statistics" sub-project (aka task force or work group) of WikiProject Maths and was wondering if you'd be interested in participating. If so, please add your name and any comments at WP:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Probability and statistics. There's also a little discussion at WT:WPM#Probability and Statistics sub-project? of some relevance to your ↑previous exchange (apologies for eavesdropping). Mallow's Cp

Hi Btyner, I noted that your statement that a Cp between 1 and 2 often works best has been deleted from the wiki article. Could you tell me on what your statement was based? Mallows Cp

Hi Btyner I never intended to accuse you of anything, I just asked for information or help. I'm sorry I mis-interpreted who made a recent change to the article; I just found it helpful and was confused by the change. could you please do me a favor?

Hello,

I am a master student at the Institute of Technology Management, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan. Currently I am wrapping up my master thesis titled “Can Wikipedia be used for knowledge service?” In order to validate the knowledge evolution maps of identified users in Wikipedia, I need your help. I have generated a knowledge evolution map to denote your knowledge activities in Wikipedia according to your inputs including the creation and modification of contents in Wikipedia, and I need you to validate whether the generated knowledge evolution map matches the knowledge that you perceive you own it. Could you please do me a favor?

  1. I will send you a URL link to a webpage on which your knowledge evolution map displays. Please assign the topic (concept) in the map to a certain cluster on the map according to the relationship between the topic and clusters in your cognition, or you can assign it to ‘none of above’ if there is no suitable cluster.
  2. I will also send a questionnaire to you. The questions are related to my research topic, and I need your viewpoints about these questions.

The deadline of my thesis defense is set by the end of June, 2008. There is no much time left for me to wrap up the thesis. If you can help me, please reply this message. I will send you the URL link of the first part once I receive your response. The completion of my thesis heavily relies much on your generous help.

Sincerely

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Licensed Clinical Social Worker, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Licensed Clinical Social Worker is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Licensed Clinical Social Worker, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Partial residual plot

I just added Partial residual plot to the list of statistical topics. If you know of others that should be there but are not, could you add those too? Thanks. Michael Hardy (talk) 05:40, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Partial leverage

I really don't think the phrase "In multi-linear regression..." can serve the purpose of initial context setting. The whole point of that sort of thing is that a lay reader who is ignorant of statistics should find out from those initial words that statistics is what the article is about. The phrase "muli-linear regression" leaves the reasonable reader uncertain whether the article is about psychiatry, theology, biology, geology, fiction writing, politics, economics, etc. Michael Hardy (talk) 05:46, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think you miss the point. You can't write "In multi-linear regression,..." as the first words of an article and expect the lay reader unfamiliar with statistics to understand that statistics is what the article is about. But if you write "In statistics,...", then that is clear. Michael Hardy (talk) 19:22, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help with Proebsting's Paradox

I'm new to Wikipedia editing. I tried to read all the material (okay, I skimmed some) but still made a lot of mistakes. I appreciate you reminding me about categories, then fixing the capitalization and eliminating "Mathematical Paradoxes," which I agree has too much overlap with "Statistical Paradoxes." I am planning to fill the new categories when a get a few minutes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by AaCBrown (talkcontribs) 14:49, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bernstein's ineq

Hi,

I am sorry, I disagree with your categorisation. I think B.i. is a probabilistic inequality (or maybe even an analytical inequality), as opposed to statistical ineq-s such as Cramer - Rao. Of course, the same objection is valid for 1/2 the inequalities in this category (so maybe the cat. should be split or renamed). What do you think?

Sasha

Explain this

Could you address this question? Michael Hardy (talk) 11:09, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article LegalZoom has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Doesn't meet notability requirements.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Btyner! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 389 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

lowess vs loess

LOWESS is Cleveland's original acronym for "locally weighted regression scatter plot smoothing". When lowess is submitted to spellcheck it is corrected to loess. This is a Swiss German word for loose and is applied to a type of soil. I believe this is how loess became a widely used corruption of lowess. 75.36.249.128 (talk) 18:46, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is no need for you to engage in speculation; please see Cleveland's page. Btyner (talk) 01:38, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated Gallery of curves, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gallery of curves. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. fetch·comms 01:32, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

McNemar's test & Cochran test

Hi Btyner, Are you sure about this? Do you have a source? The source i have to hand (Stata manuals) appears to be saying that the generalizations of McNemar's test to larger tables are Bowker's test of symmetry and various tests of marginal homogeneity (e.g. Stuart-Maxwell). I've a hunch this may relate to the recent question at Talk:Cochran test. Regards, Qwfp (talk) 21:38, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I think there are several different ways of generalizing McNemar's test. That SAS documentation seems to be saying Cochran's test generalizes it to 2×2×…×2 tables, rather than k×k tables. It's not clear enough to me at present to edit the articles though. May have another look when i have more time. Regards, Qwfp (talk) 08:09, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Added template for SuggestBot

Hi,

Thanks for being one of SuggestBot's users! I hope you have found the bot's suggestions useful.

We are in the process of switching from our previous list-based signup process to using templates and userboxes, and I have therefore added the appropriate template to your user talk page. You should receive the first set of suggestions within a day, and since we'll be automating SuggestBot you will from then on continue to receive them regularly at the desired frequency.

We now also have a userbox that you can use to let others know you're using SuggestBot, and if you don't want to clutter your user talk page the bot can post to a sub-page in your userspace. More information about the userbox and usage of the template is available on User:SuggestBot/Getting Recommendations Regularly.

If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on my user talk page. Thanks again, Nettrom (talk) 17:29, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

sinusoidal model article : what about finding a different name ?

Hi,

you first started this page :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinusoidal_model

the problem is that in audio signal processing, sinusoidal modeling refers to modeling an audio signal as :

where is the number of time varying sinusoidals (the amplitude and the frequency are time varying), and is everything but the time-varying sinusoidals

sinusoidal modeling has been first introduced in the context of speech signal processing, for time scale and pitch modification

most of papers on audio signal processing today refer to the (time-varying) sinusoidal + transient + noise model

what do you think about changing the name of "your" page ?

could you open a discussion about that with the other authors of the page ?

Renaud (php student at Ircam, Paris, France) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Acx01b (talkcontribs) 02:08, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

sinusoidal model : new title ?

Hello, maybe you should just add "nonlinear regression" in the title  :

sinusoidal model (nonlinear regression)

and the audio signal processing page could maybe be named :

sinusoidal model (audio signal processing)

it's just a proposition,

best regards
