lol

no I wasn't notified of nothing ans what's ironic enough is that I was about to edit the page to say that it now gas a active community about it (it reached not ability) I think that's fair enough to keep the page can I have it undeleted sjo I can prove that it has been noticed ... on the page itself :D (talk) 08:54, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You had several notifications. At the top of your screen, click on "My talk". That shows you your talk page, where you can read them all. When you see a yellow bar across the top of your screen saying "You have new messages", you should click "My talk" to see what the new messages are.
Read WP:42 to see what we mean by notability. If you believe you can really show notability to that standard, reply below here and I will move the page into your user space where you can work on it; but don't ask for that unless it's really notable, because otherwise you will be wasting your time. Edited My Blank Out error and that's also for my apology to you John Cd - of the use of my language on your talk page. I should have played the game smarter - like I already new. Sorry CommunityFlaawless (talk) 22:22, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, don't worry about it. Cheers, JohnCD (talk) 16:38, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Too fast!

I went to find the real article that Daniel Simmister was ripping off, and by the time I got back, you'd beaten me to the deletion. :p LadyofShalott 16:32, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It was blatant enough that I decided to shoot first and ask questions afterwards - no doubt you found that the answer was Efraín Ríos Montt. JohnCD (talk) 16:36, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. I can't blame you for your chosen route either. It was pretty dang obvious. LadyofShalott 16:38, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jeremiah McHoes

I do not understand why you deleted my page. No one knows more about Jeremiah McHoes than I do, because I am Jeremiah McHoes... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jsmchoes (talkcontribs) 19:49, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is explained on your talk page: Wikipedia is not a site like Myspace for people to write about themselves. It's an encyclopedia, so article subjects have to be notable, and writing about oneself is strongly discouraged, for reasons explained at Wikipedia is not about YOU and Wikipedia:Autobiography. JohnCD (talk) 20:09, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

So the only way I will be able to have a page about me is if I became famous? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jsmchoes (talkcontribs) 21:09, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's right; and even then you should not write it yourself. JohnCD (talk) 21:12, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User:Rlg000raz wishes to start this article again with the content from his sandbox. Apparently the song has charted 61 for US iTunes. You were one of the contributors moving the page to Ariana Grande. I would like to know if you think the content is enough. I believe a large amount of the content is the same and would perhaps need additional third-party sources. SwisterTwister talk 03:25, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That was redirected after Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Put Your Hearts Up - all I did was restore the redirect after an IP reverted it. I have told Rlg000raz that he needs to convince Armbrust (talk) who closed the AfD, or failing that go to WP:DRV. JohnCD (talk) 09:09, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

deborah hertz

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Deborah_Hertz&action=history - you said that it passes the low bar of a7 (for keep, not to delete). i am skeptical. so...can i bring it to the afd section for discussion? my main issue is that there are zero RS for anything she has done, and two references added a few days ago are very weak. the jewish women's archive lists any jewish woman - notable or not by any standards (see: http://jwa.org/encyclopedia/about ). and the other reference is simply a review of a book she wrote. 99% of all academic publications get reviewed by their peers. having a book reviewed certainly doesn't make someone notable, right? (wrong?) i am sure that prof hertz is a very nice person, etc. but i am having trouble seeing her article (or any search for her in googleland) meet even the lowest bar of anything notable. help... Soosim (talk) 10:06, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, certainly you can take it to AfD - there are many articles that pass the low bar of A7 but not the higher one of notability. A7 is there to weed out the ones where there is no need for discussion. Read WP:DEL and WP:AFD, unless you are familiar with them, and WP:PROF, the notability standard for academics. Hi JohnCD. I tagged the article User/Gunkarta/Userboxes/Pluralism as a test page as it is in article space, rather than at User:Gunkarta/Userboxes/Pluralism. The latter page already exists, so I could not move and then tag the redirect page under G2. Regards GILO   A&E 17:07, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the picture is representing the French Marie Sklodowska Curie (she is from Poland!!), who lives in France. Is not this a bug? What do you think? Top811 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 17:58, 13 May 2012 (UTC).[reply]

Well, she was born in Poland, but she moved to France aged 24, married a Frenchman, studied and worked and won two Nobel prizes there, lived there for the rest of her life, and is buried in the Panthéon which is "a secular mausoleum containing the remains of distinguished French citizens." I think it's reasonable to show her as representing France. If you disagree, the article talk page is the place to take it up. JohnCD (talk) 20:17, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WHY!

Why would you delete my page?! It was completely real about my friend. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MilkMunched (talkcontribs) 18:08, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We do not allow attack pages, and anyway Wikipedia is not a place to write about your friends. JohnCD (talk) 20:25, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: attack pages

Heh, I certainly wasn't going to bother with any "welcome to editing" messages. Quite the opposite; I already tagged the account as a vandalism only account on the notice board. Human.v2.0 (talk) 09:56, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A new user won't normally be blocked for a first offence, only if he persists after warning; that's why a warning is necessary. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 10:08, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You might like this one - I've just looked at your userpage. I've deleted the article version A7, but that doesn't work in userspace, does it? The article was 'authored' by a different name. This user is blocked at pt-wiki for userpage abuse, and at es-wiki the userpage has been deleted. The 'films' link to Film, and I can find nothing outside blogspot for the first of them. Would this go as a hoax, perhaps? BTW the AfD on the (so far...) longest running hoax on WP is near its end - Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tillery (about six and a half years in existence, but doubts were cast on its second day). The long running hoaxes page will need changing - TPH (or an otter) has added this already, but got the maths wrong. Peridon (talk) 17:41, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the complete absence of any confirmation in places like IMDb makes this a G3 hoax. I would normally like two pairs of eyes, but I'll count you as the first. It's also personal details of a minor. If this goes on we may need an SPI on these accounts, but let's hope they give up. JohnCD (talk) 18:19, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User Ashashyou

I noticed that you replaced the speedy delete notice at Flint stone bracelets and armlets of Egypt with a copyvio investigation notice. Looking at Ashashyou (talk · contribs)'s recent edits, I notice some massive copyvio at Nawamis and more copyvio in other articles recently, mainly reverted. I've warned the editor. Dougweller (talk) 18:37, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your warning. Maybe, added to my explanation, he will get the idea. I thought there was the possibility of an article there, if he can rewrite the text; if not, having been listed at Copyright problems, it'll be zapped or stubbed in a week. JohnCD (talk) 20:36, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Advice please!

Hey John!

I need your advice on this please. This editor turned off ClueBot, I know that CBNG is only meant to be turned off by admins so when I saw a non-admin do it I assumed CBNG had done something wrong and I asked the question because I was going to report any issues to User:Cobi. However, the user has actually admitted to intentionally vandalising CBNG's run page and admitted to vandalising CBNG's talk page albeit over a year ago. I'm inclined to let it go however because turning off the anti-vandal bot is quite serious, that's why I'm asking for a second opinion from you. What do you reckon?--5 albert square (talk) 20:35, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think it was silly rather than malevolent, so I agree a block is not necessary. In order to bring another voice in, I have given him a final warning of a long block if he does anything like that again. I wonder, should Cluebot be full-protected again? I see it was before, and I don't know what were the reasons for downgrading the protection to semi. JohnCD (talk) 21:00, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
From what I remember it was downgraded before because not all ClueBot's admins are Wikipedia sysops, only Cobi from what I know. So it would have meant that if changes needed to be made to that page from ClueBot's admins unless Cobi was active, they wouldn't be able to do anything without asking for the page to be unlocked first. I have actually just posted though on User talk:DamianZaremba as he seems to be the only one of ClueBot's admins that's active at the moment (Cobi's not made any edits since 4 May) and asked if they would like it fully protected even just for a short while, I've pointed out that doing that might be better than the bot being turned off. I'm reluctant to do it without at least getting his opinion because, like I say, it would then mean that he can't edit the page. I'm thinking it's strange though that the majority of this is redlinked users and it's only started to really happen over the last few days. I did wonder if sockpuppetry was involved.--5 albert square (talk) 21:08, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm surprised there isn't more trouble there - it's an obvious target for vandals, either in revenge for being reverted, or to help sneak in their next vandalism. I guess it helps that the user page says "administrators may turn off this bot". JohnCD (talk) 21:17, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose, but even if you put "administrators may turn off this bot" if a vandal is really determined, that will not deter them. With it being set indefinitely to autoconfirmed users I think there's the assumption that they will not vandalise. Sadly, that's not always the case. I'm inclined to leave ClueBot's run page just now, it's on my watchlist anyway, if the vandalism should get really bad whilst I'm online tonight then I'll just upgrade it's protection for a few days and if ClueBot's admins object they can always message me. When I come on tomorrow, if I've no response from Damien and the vandalism has continued I'll lock it then too. I'd just rather give Damien the chance to respond first :)--5 albert square (talk) 21:38, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. They have generally been reverted quickly - a good many people must have it on their watchlists. I'll add it to mine. Cheers, JohnCD (talk) 21:41, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Scouty2 Edits for Smith County, Texas

ScountY2 (talk) 20:56, 15 May 2012 (UTC)Sir:[reply]

I was attempting to add to the Smith County article under "See Also" the names of several local attractions and link to their websites, several of which have different named links within Wikipedia or are only external links. I ought I was doing it correctly but obviously I have not. I think I understand now that I can add the names of the attractions but need to add the character that indicates an external link or website. Is that correct?

Thank you!

What you were doing was creating "articles" consisting only of an external link. You can see at the existing Smith County article how to do it: if there is already an article for the subject you want to link to, put the name of the article as an entry under "See also" as a wikilink between double square brackets. "See also" is only for references within Wikipedia: if there is no article, put the entry under "External links" in the same format as existing ones - within single square brackets, first the full URL starting with "http", then a space, then the text that you want to appear. Don't overdo it, though - read WP:NOTGUIDE #2 "Travel guides" and the guideline WP:External links. JohnCD (talk) 21:53, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Deletion of Bradford Catholics page

I believe my page to have been unfairly deleted and i believe it should be un-blocked this religion was not just made up one day with my mates this religion was created because we strongly believe this is how life should be lived and think that many others may feel the same way we already have 30 followers and as it was only properly formed 6 days ago that obviously proves we are serious about this and we are just trying to spread are views on religion or at least make people aware of are religion. We hope you will take this message seriously and will grant us are request.

Sorry, there are sites like Myspace where you can write about it, but Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and an encyclopedia is not a place for announcing new things - it only reports on things that are already well established, so that other people have commented on them independently.
The guideline Wikipedia is not for things made up one day was written mainly for people who have made up a new word or a joke "philosophy", but you should read it all because it explains the issues quite well, and they apply even when the subject is serious. Racism

Is it wrong to talk about racism in wikipedia? - Aviyal:My Talk Page:My Contributions 19:28, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you mean.
  • As a subject in articles: yes, it can be talked about, there is a long article Racism and many more detailed ones listed in Index of racism-related articles
  • In discussions on talk pages and noticeboards: it is very unlikely to be helpful to accuse another editor of racism - see WP:No personal attacks
If you want more than this general answer, you will have to make your question more specific. JohnCD (talk) 20:03, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jessie Jack Hooper page

Hi, JohnCD-

Thanks for your kind and helpful notes re the page I started. I'd been dubbing around with the idea for a page on that topic for a bit, and I guess I just got impatient to have something show up there. Jessie Jack Hooper is a truly nationally-significant person from my community, and it has really bothered me that she hasn't been on the list of local notables. I've had a request out, for ages, to a local professor who has developed a huge amount of scholarly information about her, but as yet haven't gotten her to commit to letting me turn something she has already written into a wikipedia page (crediting her and her sources properly, of course.)

As I'm living abroad at the moment, for now, just listing Jessie Jack Hooper on the "notables" list will have to do, but I'll turn up the heat on that prof when I get back home this summer, and make this page really a good one. Thanks again for your help! MAOffer (talk) 19:53, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good, I'm glad you were not scared off. She may not survive on the notables list - those lists are really for people with articles - but she can be put back when you write one. JohnCD (talk) 21:33, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

why did you delete my created Ezzil 02 (talk) 16:26, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker here) I did too. Wikipedia isn't somewhere for you to post your history. Apart from which, if your friends don't know who you are, why are they friends? Seriously, that's what Facebook and MySpace are for. Telling your friends about the things they don't know about you. This is an encyclopaedia - we list people that are of note way outside a few friends. They have articles about them in national papers and magazines, or jobs like Member of Parliament or Senator. Sorry, but if it appears again, it'll go again. and if you carry on, you might get blocked from editing altogether. Wikipedia is free to edit, but you still have to follow the rules. A barnstar for you!

The Citation Barnstar
Last year, I realized that the ARC Weekly Top 40 was no longer on WikiPedia. Although it was accurate, a lot of people were unknown of this chart and the MBG Top 40 chart. At first I was a little upset it was not on the website. However, me being subscribed to Billboard, I realized that the information on ARC Weekly was "a little bit off". It says it's supposed to be Airplay and Sales. Unfortunately, the chart has undergone changes that no one else had known.

Yes, when I do not want to log into my Billboard.Biz subscription, I do visit ARC rockonthenet. But what I've noticed is that it was pretty much like Top40-charts.com. It seemed off from what it was supposed to be. I looked at Hot 100 Airplay, Mainstream Top 40, and even Pop Digital Songs; it seemed inaccurate. Another thing was that there were about 275 songs in its first year (1980), but there were only 156 songs in 2009. Since I knew the history of Contemporary hit radio and the formats it spawned into, I knew that the website did not provide enough information about its chart change. It was as if it focused on The Billboard Hot 100 from 1980 to 1990, Hot 100 Airplay and Sales from 1991-1996, Top 40 Tracks from 1996-2003, and the Mainstream Top 40 and Pop Digital from 2004-present.

Thank you for deleting it on WikiPedia. Someone like me, who was born way after 1980, could have misused an inaccurate chart when trying to re-live Contemporary hit radio in the 1980s. DominiquesMusic (talk) 01:56, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Letting anyone edit brings in more than one new page a minute and, while there is a lot of good stuff, a regrettable proportion are unsuitable, so administrators have a lot of deleting to do; but there are quite strict rules about what they can delete and why. This one was the result of a deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hakan Serbes, and if you think it was wrongly decided, or you have more information, you can appeal at WP:Deletion review. The more I look at this whole thing, the more I see an extensive and deliberate attempt at subversion spreading across a number of articles. This is clearly not someone here to improve the encyclopedia, but someone here to disrupt it quite seriously by implanting a blatant hoax supported by various falsehoods. My feelings are that the block should be raised to indef - what do you think? -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 11:55, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I don't disagree. I was waiting for checkuser results from the SPI. I didn't indef at once because it looked as though he has done some good work on Afghan articles, for instance this chart, which may even be accurate - it certainly doesn't support his hoax. The way he is denying everything didn't impress me, though. JohnCD (talk) 12:48, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks. This is some silly idiot on Twitter. Blocked the accounts, not worth blocking most of the IPs. If he keeps it up, we can get an edit filter, but I expect he'll soon get bored even with this and go back to throwing stones at cats or writing his name on lavatory walls. New Page Triage/New Pages Feed

Hey all :). A notification that the prototype for the New Pages Feed is now live on enwiki! We had to briefly take it down after an unfortunate bug started showing up, but it's now live and we will continue developing it on-site.

The page can be found at Special:NewPagesFeed. Please, please, please test it and tell us what you think! Note that as a prototype it will inevitably have bugs - if you find one not already mentioned at the talkpage, bring it up and I'm happy to carry it through to the devs. The same is true of any additions you can think of to the software, or any questions you might have - let me know and I'll respond.

Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 13:31, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for your help! After I saw that my first page had been deleted before I had even realized it was marked for speedy deletion, I was concerned that Wikipedia might not be the place for me. But your help has put me on the right path and I once again have faith that Wikipedia editors are here to help. Your comments were very helpful, thank you very much!

I have updated (and I think drastically improved) the article that you helped me with earlier. Take a look if you like: User:Greyb1/CenterEdge Software. There is still more work to do, but you were a big help. Thanks, again. Greyb1 (talk) 03:13, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ITOL

Yes I wasn't happy with it and tried to do it in a rush before I went out which is never a wise move for your 1st new Wiki page. I'll do some more digging on content. I created it because I had trouble finding a definition elsewhere !! There is a further complication that Itol is already there as a redirection to Polyol. I'll have a rethink. thanks Andrew Andrewdeacon51 (talk) 07:27, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Heidi Bedell Wikipedia page

Hi JohnCD, I note that you have deleted my page due to me being unimportant. You might be right but I am vain and I liked having it. In my defense, I'd like to point out a few things which may be noteworthy. I am the only Green politician to have stood in two different districts and won both times. I've never lost an election I stood for (that's only two, but still). With regard to my time as Chair of the National Council and National Co-ordinator: The Party suffered great losses in the 1999 election, the feeling in the party was very low. Because I had the time, I became the first full-time national co-ordinator in 1999. I poured my heart into the party and began to lift it up out of the doldrums. I was the co-ordinator when the party decided to elect a leader and when they decided to elect Trevor. In 1996 when Trevor and I first met, I acted as his image consultant, a role I continued to play to the party in general. When Trevor and I got engaged 2 weeks after we'd met, a number of comments were made that this had helped to secure his Malahide vote in the 1997 general election. I was the leader of the party up to 2001 and I was co-leader with Trevor up to 2003. I stepped down just before Stiofan Nutty was appointed General Secretary - a new role, now possible with the extra money that the 2003 election success had provided. I know the Green Party has had many 'ups and downs' through the years and there are many more to come, but that 'up' was my 'up' and it is currently invisible. I've never heard anyone ask - how did the green party go from 1 TD in 1996 to 6 TDs in 2003? Who was running the party before they had a leader?

I had never thought about this untill I completed a masters this year which included an interesting module on feminisim. It was during these lectures that I fully digested the claim that women tend to be written out of history. I can't help wondering if I was male would I have taken up more space in people's consciousness? Maybe not. Who really cares? I'd like my page back. Thanks.

Your wish is my command: I have restored your article. However, there is a catch, and to explain it I need to explain some Wikipedia bureaucracy. I deleted it (two years ago) by a process called WP:Proposed deletion or PROD: any user who thinks an article should go can place a notice (PROD template) on it giving reasons. For seven days, any user who objects can simply remove the template. If, after seven days, no-one has done that, the article is deleted. As PROD is meant for uncontroversial deletions, a PRODded article is automatically restored on request, as I have now done.
Once restored, it may not be PRODded again, but there is a more deliberate process, WP:Articles for deletion which involves a debate, again lasting seven days. I will notify user Snappy (talk), who PRODded your article, that it has been restored (with a link to this discussion) and he (or any user) may choose to nominate it at AfD.
The issue is not importance, but Wikipedia:Notability, a term used in a particular sense in Wikipedia: it is required for any article subject, and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." We try to avoid making subjective judgements about things like importance by asking a more objective question: is there evidence that people independent of the subject have thought her/him/it important enough to write substantial comment about? There is more detail at WP:Notability (people), particularly the section WP:POLITICIAN.
There is nothing in the restored article which shows notability in that sense. I can understand why you feel that your behind-the-scenes role was important, but can you give references to independent sources (press, published memoirs... ) which confirm that?
In regard to your own article you have, from our point of view, a WP:Conflict of interest, see also WP:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest and WP:Autobiography, and we would prefer that you did not yourself edit it directly. You are welcome to make suggestions, particularly to provide references, on the article talk page.
Two more links - I am sorry to give so many: there is advice for people who are the subjects of Wikipedia articles at WP:Biographies of living persons/Help, and a "noticeboard" at WP:BLP/N where you can ask for assistance.
