The 2014–15 season is Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 111th season in existence and the club's 81st consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. Benfica will compete in the Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal, Taça da Liga and group stage of the UEFA Champions League (qualified by winning the Primeira Liga). Benfica will also compete in Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.

Season overview

In the 111th season, Jorge Jesus will start his six consecutive season, for the first time in 60 years, when János Biri started and won the 1944-45 season. He currently ties in number of matches managed with Janos Biri, both at 272, although with 4 fewer wins. If he wins the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira he will also tie with Cosme Damião in number of trophies won, with 8, surpassing both Janos Biri and Otto Glória. It will also be the 11th season with Luis Filipe Vieira as President.

For the first time since 2011, Benfica will play the Supercup, attempting to win their fifth trophy. The last Supercup won was in 2005.

After winning a historic treble, Benfica lost five players of the starting eleven. Guilherme Siqueira returned to Granada after Benfica opted to waive the option to purchase them.[1] Ezequiel Garay left to Zenit on 25 June 2014, having played 136 matches and scored 12 goals in his 3 seasons.[2] On 15 July 2014, Lazar Marković, with only a year in Lisbon, left for Liverpool, having played 49 games with 7 goals scored.[3][4] The next day, Jan Oblak was sold to Atlético Madrid, with the Slovenian playing only 26 games with 22 clean sheets, conceding 6 goals.[5][6] Rodrigo and André Gomes were sold back in January to an investment firm.[7] Matić was sold to Chelsea in January.[8]
