Thanks for your response. I was thinking along the lines of 80-20%. I edited the entire article, making 14 edits over three days. That doesn't include a 15th edit implementing the suggestion you made on the article Talk page, nor the two technical edits of placing and removing the GOCEinuse template, etc. I also suggested sharing the credit because I thought you had been pushed out by an overly eager Bot, but I see that the 24-hour limit is stated in the GOCEinuse template documentation. I didn't know about it at the time, though. There is also the matter of whose word count do we use, since the one you started with was probably about 1,000 words greater than mine. Naked eye observations of Mercury and OR

A year or two ago it was mentioned on the TV news from Chicago that Mercury would be visible at dusk. I wasn't watching, but my brother told me. I saw it easily. I'm sure other stations across this country and others mentioned it, and millions knew. It wasn't the first apparition for me, either...and it's not difficult to see. Drawing on such common knowledge and experience is not OR, or research at all.

But I know people have been led to believe the opposite through books, so I have included a reference to an excellent viewing opportunity this year. Saros136 (talk) 07:44, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Saros136: That still doesn't address whether, or why, being at a higher latitude obscures viewing, since Chicago is south of Ontario. I haven't seen the effect of latitude explained by any books I've consulted. I can only guess that at higher latitudes there is greater atmospheric interference. Etymology of the word "Urdu"

Hi. In literature "Urdu" means "Camp" and it's an Old Persian word. Urdu=اردو( Persian) as a verb, it is Urdu zadan=اردو زدن(Persian), as a place, it is Urdu guah= اردو گاه (Persian). This language has been formed during King Nader Afshar the conquer who, accupied India. I'm not expert enough to know whether your edit was superior to what was already at the article, so I left your edit unreverted when I reverted most of what the IP editor had written, partly because you had not given an explanation in an edit summary, if I recall correctly I see that you did give an edit summary. Given the contentious nature of editing that article at the moment, I suggest you start a discussion on the article Talk page, if you want to push for the change. I can transclude this discussion onto the Talk page, unless you want to reformulate your arguments. I note that you have not given any reference for your etymology of "Urdu". My Encyclopedia Britannica, under Hindustani Languages, says that Urdu was first used by Indian recruits in the army of the Mughal emperor; so, "camp" certainly sounds plausible. List of destroyer escorts of the United States Navy

The reasoning for my edit on List of destroyer escorts of the United States Navy was that the corrected name appeared earlier in the list and therefore would be duplicated unless it was removed. I may be wrong, but that's why I did it. welsh (talk) 22:27, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Welsh: The DE lists were kept separately as very basic lists; and your removing the misspelled name from the latter, sorted-by-name list meant that it was gone from that list and wouldn't be replaced by, say, automatic duplication from the first, sorted-by-hull-number list, unless there is a mechanism that I'm not aware of. The two lists probably should be merged into one table sortable by either field, and someone started such a table for the latter list. Completion of that job would take some work. @Harisingh123: OK. From your cites, it seems Baraut tehsil is equivalent to Baraut sub-district. At 700,000 plus people though, it shouldn't be regarded as small. I was using the urban figures only for Baraut from the 2011 census. I'm happy to use your figures, if you are sure that the article is referring to what is now regarded as a sub-district. @Dustin V. S.:Thank you for the heads up. I have just corrected the "Civil rights" section back to what it was. However, it did take some doing. I did not replace the three "&nbsp;" 's that you had placed in that section. I think that work would be of low priority, and if you're having to do it in such a painstaking manner that you can't take time to work around other edits in conflict (i.e. I don't think you're using a script), then I think you should reconsider it. The "&nbsp;" is there on the off-chance a day date might become separated from its month during formatting, which would not be a major nuisance and can be corrected ad hoc. you reverted a correct edit!

dear Dhtwiki,

you asked me to provide sources for my edit on the page "Paris commune". my only source is solid logic! I corrected the date in this sentence:

"The Committee on Public Safety of Raoul Rigault began to make more arrests, usually for treason, intelligence with the enemy, or insults to the Commune. Those arrested included General de Martimprey—almost 80 years old, the governor of the Invalides, alleged to having caused the assassination of revolutionaries in December 1751"

the man is 80 years old and accused of causing the assassination of people 121 years ago!! clearly the century of that dat is wrong: it should be 1851 (just after the suppression of the 1844 revolution). also there was no revolution on Paris in 1751! that's it!

Your recent deletions

I have reverted part of your deletions. They were referenced and relevant and had I had demonstrated the burden of evidence by supplying reliable sources. I have edited the content more to address your concerns as much as possible and have not returned the same sex marriage stuff as I didn't have time to add the proper references from the original article properly formatted (you beat me to it and deleted before I could correct that) but it actually did have a proper "copied" note for the copy paste, in the edit summary with links. If you still feel the content should not be there or needs more work, please disuss this on the talk page so we may form a consensus or address further concerns. I intend to add additional content in the cultural section on the American Indian and Native Hawaiian cultures as they are both very much part of the American culture.--Mark Miller (talk) 08:25, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Mark Miller: Once reverted it is as much, if not more, your job to start a Talk discussion, to see if you can gain consensus to add the material (See WP:BRD). Having sourced information is not all. You have been quickly adding a lot of material to an article that is already considered too long, and I think you should step back for a bit, to let others take it all in. Please understand that is your opinion but you cannot control editors or content over such. It is up to you to have a reason within policy and guidelines when removing content. Size of an article, supposed speed or the amount of content is not a matter for deleting just because you feel it wwas too much to quickly and others should see it. I have been contributing to the article for a while and if consensus is to delete it, I would accept the consensus, but it was actually you that made a unilateral move by deleting sourced content for reasons that are only point of view without any discussion. "The article doesn't exist for you to add whatever you want, leaving it to others to justify taking it down." Yeah actually...it kinda does. This is an encyclopedia anyone can edit and add anything they want that isn't blatant vandalism, false or inaccurate information. Also, as a major contributor to BRD, I feel it important to mention in this case that, per BRD: "Revert an edit if it is not an improvement, and it cannot be immediately fixed by refinement. Consider reverting only when necessary. BRD does not encourage reverting, but recognizes that reverts will happen." Karl

Forget the Twitter account and its 62k followers - sources indicate "Karl the Fog" has entered local lexicon as an anthropomorphic nickname. From that SF Weekly article: "A ruined summer picnic is blamed simply on Karl, the name the account holder gave to the fog and the one that has stuck, creeping into the everyday language of San Franciscans". Here are a few more examples: SF Weekly [2], 7x7 [3], The San Francisco Chronicle [4], TripAdvisor [5]. Not going to edit war over this, but the soupy sobriquet is real. @Blackguard SF:"Karl" is not yet a well-known meteorological term, though, and it's use confused me in that context, especially when the wording implied that local residents knew the fog as such, without qualification. The articles you cite don't give credence to popularity beyond online Twitter fans; I don't think it's been shown to be a well-known term. When that sense of the word makes it into the dictionary, or when the TV weatherman says, "It's going to be Karl near the coast.", then you might have some reason to use the term as it was used. My added wording in the article just makes the Twitter origin clear. I really don't think it now belongs at all in that section; maybe in Culture, or maybe someday. Use of country flag icons in infoboxes is discouraged (MOS:INFOBOXFLAG) unless necessary. It's not necessary to illustrate the bank's Indian affiliation, since that is made clear throughout. Often flag icons are used to show country affiliations of people or entities, where there are many different affiliations to be shown in the same article; or where flags indicate political development, again, when more than one flag is needed. @Lotje:I don't know if there are too many, but that wasn't the reason for my edit (if that was what you thought). I see that you just added a series of 4 pictures at the bottom (which would look better left-justified, BTW). Are they particularly illustrative of his work? @Dhtwiki:, regarding the 4 pictures I added at the bottom: French art critic fr [Louis Viardot] states these are of the same series of 5 paintings of fools (les momomanes) created between 1819-18211. (Insane Woman). Étienne-Jean Georget commissioned Théodore Géricault to paint a series of portraits so that his students could study the facial traits of "monomaniacs" (les momomanes), as he preferred using such images to having patients in the classroom. Between 1821 and 1824, Géricault created ten paintings of which 5 would have survived. They include those of a kidnapper (le Vol d’enfants) in the (Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, Massachusetts of which I do not find an image on commons right now. @Lotje:I think you have the entire series now. I've just left-aligned the lower gallery, as I think it looks better aligned with the gallery above. Your gallery title ("Les Monomanes") doesn't exactly relate to "portraits of the insane" in the article text; and your left hand picture caption, "Woman Suffering from Obsessive Envy", doesn't relate exactly to "Insane Woman" in the text, although the caption does link to that picture's Wikipedia article. You could keep the title you have but add something like "(Insane Woman)", or, better, put the English title first, with the French in parenthesis, as this is English Wikipedia. I'd also add "Portraits of the Insane" to your gallery title similarly, especially as that is how the Metropolitan Museum of Art also knows them (from their monograph Gericault's Heroic Landscapes: The Times of Day). I should have looked at the revision history page. You seem to have written the article yourself. For one thing, you didn't leave any explanation of what you were doing in the edit summaries. However, what you added isn't verifiable (see WP:BLP), and counts as original research (see WP:OR) (and you removed some of the "Citation needed" templates that others must have put up to point out the lack of verifiability). NaMo18

You noted and gave a warning on NaMo18's talk page about prior inappropriate posts. Did you note this one as well? There's an indifference to warnings and blocks because there are so many sockpuppets available for use. I think the first one I noticed was Arrigo back in '05, one of whose socks posted thus about an English queen's alleged Negro ahnentafel. Another was ObRoy as here and Shilkanni. Worth watching but I don't know what can be done to prevent abuse that stretches back 10 years -- so far?. FactStraight (talk) 14:18, 5 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If people don't put the warning templates on talk pages the administrators won't do anything, which is why I do it. However a mechanically scolding chore it is, you've got to do it or give up the right to complain. I didn't place a template when I first reverted NaMo18, because the picture of a unicorn hart on his talk page for some reason made me think he was in earnest. As far as sockpuppets, I can't speak to that. Wikipedia takes that seriously (as I believe you know). If you have real grounds for such an accusation, they would likely investigate. Oh, isn't it once again the guy with Wikipedia's most ironic nickname. Without any deeper investigation and without any attempts to test the pro et contra of your conclusions, you automatically assume that every single user who, over a span of ten years, happens to appear in an article related to royalty or nobility and who, there, adds something that, with an obsessive preconception, might be interpreted as racism, e.g. 'Another story (myth or like) of a black child born to European royals is that of a black daughter of Louis XIV and Maria Theresa of Spain' (as you are referring to above), is the same person. You must have a weak grip on reality if you see the same person everywhere you walk and stand during a decade. If this so-called 'amateur genealogist/historian' actually exists (contrary to being a fantasy foetus of yours), you have found your monomaniac twin brother.
Why on Earth would I spend ten years on Wikipedia, and under several nicknames, adding this type of anecdotes to royal biographies? And why would I travel to Finland to edit Wikipedia via a Finnish IP address? I've had (and still have) only one account: this one, whose name I've changed three times, I think. And soon four. Hello Dhtwiki, My apology to you if I have reversed any of your valid edits. The vandalism on the Bierce page was so extensive and spread over so many entries that some good changes may have been swept out inadvertently during the cleanup. I know you are not the culprit. I will be going over the edits again today, and I will try to make sure any good info is kept in. Perhaps you could assist if you are able. My problem was in the removal of the "bathwater" and "cest" and the other crap that this dirty tweaker had put into the article. @SamJohn2013: I've looked through your edits at Ambrose Bierce. I was able to re-revert the July 2014 edit of mine. My other, November 2014, edit you reverted was undoing an edit you yourself then reverted two edits later. The rest of your edits look very much on-target for getting rid of some of the hilarity that has ensued, but not yet been caught. Again, a mea culpa. I was so horrified and upset at what I saw there that I moved angrily and with a heavy hand. Pic

Well, You know I understand your reasoning of course, about well known pictures. But I also think that sometimes Wikipedia should be a bit challenging too. It should be like 80 % of the wel known but still 20% that is fairly unknown.. So it could leave a bit to discover to people, so they can say after they looked, oh, wow, that one, I never knew it existed, how interesting. Also it is the Royal Family's collection, so I thought it would be nice to have someting depicting them as well, not only Pythagoras urging people to eat veggies, (but not beans, of course, wonder why...) Anyway, if Her Majesty thought it was a good enough picture of Her to be placed in this prestigious gallery ... so why not go with it - She thought after all it was fine. What do you think? @Hafspajen:I questioned the prominence of the picture, for one thing. You made it the second image on the page, I think. If you had wanted to introduce it farther down, I would have objected less. If you had created a separate section for royal portraits and placed it there, even less. As I said in the edit summary, you placed it next to text that told of the wide-ranging nature of the collection, displacing images I though more suitable. Royal portraits are to be expected in such a collecton, old masters and da Vinci drawings maybe less so. I think there's a place for that portrait, but not where you decided to put it. Hi there, with regard to this edit summary, "reality TV series (not film) just reverted seems to be legit (Indraneil's name on roster at linked article)" it sounds as if you are considering Wikipedia it's own source. As you know, Wikipedia is user-contributed and prone to errors. The fact that the guy's name appears in another article doesn't mean at all that the content is legit. That said, I've done a little research and I think there's sufficient information out there to suggest the guy is in that reality show, so I won't be making any reversions. @Jfayel: "Software" is a collective noun, adapted from "hardware". As a native speaker of English, "...is a software" grates very badly on my ear. "...is a piece of software" seems to be similar usage, but here the "a piece" makes it concrete. Check online, an English dictionary with quotations, or a book in English, to confirm what I've said. @Suman420:First, you don't want use the particular template you used ({{User:Dhtwiki|Dhtwiki}}, and which I've removed), in the salutation, as that transcludes my user page into this discussion. Use the template such as I've used for notification (there are others that will work similarly), although you shouldn't need to notify me when you use my User Talk page. Now, about my reversion. I gave you a pointer to the policy I was obeying, WP:INDICSCRIPT, in my edit summary. The inclusion of Indic scripts in the lead paragraph is highly discouraged, if not forbidden, as it doesn't add much to an English encyclopedia, as well as being prone to edit warring or vandalism that can't be easily detected by those not well-versed in such scripts. You will see that the discussion goes back and forth between two entirely different issues, so you can ignore the other topic. Rothorpe and I agreed that with the blockquote template, the space between the two paragraphs was too great and that it looks better if the two paragraphs are fairly close together. Rwood128 came up with the simple solution. I just now compared the appearance of the right-hand margin with and without the blockquote template and did not see much difference. Bihar Article (Languages)

1) In Bihar many languages are spoken, of which Bhojpuri is the most common. - > This is a original research and not supported by reference.

2) Hindi—the co-official national language, with English—and Urdu are constitutionally recognized languages of the state. - > Your reference http://www.diehardindian.com/demogrph/moredemo/histlang.htm doesn't exists.
