Petra Christian University (often abbreviated as UK Petra or UKP ) is a private Christian university in Surabaya, Indonesia, established in 1961 by the initiative of several founders of PPPK Petra , a Christian education foundation in Surabaya that was established in 1951. The name "Petra" comes from the Greek word "Rock".. It has about 9,900 students and 6 faculties.

The establishment of Petra Christian University can not be separated from the role of Petra Christian Education and Teaching Association (PPPK Petra). PPPK Petra is a Christian association founded in 1951 that aims to provide education from the level of kindergarten to secondary education. The desire to provide a wider opportunity for higher education, encouraging the board of the association to establish a college.

The idea has been sparked since 1956, and it was only rediscovered in 1960, after Petra PPPK founder Tan Tjiauw Yong and Tan Gie Djien met with Brig. Dr. Moestopo in the Congress of Dentists Association in Bandung , West Java . Moestopo who has established a private university in Jakarta, namely University Prof. Dr. Moestopo (Religious) , advised and advised to immediately establish a Christian university in Surabaya.

To realize the idea then formed an ad hoc committee is the Preparatory Committee of University Establishment Planning in charge of preparing everything for the establishment of a Christian college. With the members of Tan Tjiauw Yong, Gouw Loe Liong, Tan Gie Djien, Tjoa Siok Tjoen, Lie Ping Lioe, and Kwee Djien Kian, this committee then served to prepare everything for the establishment of Christian College (PTK), both lecturers, Lectures, and so forth. On September 22, 1961 was officially announced the founding of Petra Christian University with the faculty of Literature as the first faculty and one year later in 1962 stood the Faculty of Civil Engineering. On September 28, 1961, the University Affairs Directorium (DUU) was established. It consists of Tan Tjiauw Yong, OF Patty, Mesach Wigjohoesodo, Gouw Loe Liong, and JA Sereh, who are in charge of continuing the growth of the Faculty of Letters of English Department. In addition, DUU also takes care of Petra Christian University finances. De facto , it was this DUU who administered Petra Christian University in the early days of its founding.

Considering that developments that took place in this university increased, the Petra PPPK Management Board established a small committee on July 18, 1964, whose members consist of Jacob Elfinus Sahetapy , Tan Tjiauw Yong, Mesach Wigjohoesodo, Kho Hong Pie, Raden Mas Soekardjo Kertonadi, and Piet Hein Saroinsong. The committee was tasked to prepare university affairs. In the 1964, it was finally agreed that the Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Kristen Petra (YPTK Petra) Foundation was established , composed of PPPK Petra, Christian leaders, and supported by 6 Protestant churches in Surabaya. On January 7, 1965, The six members of the small committee facing Mr. notary . Oe Siang Djie and establishment of YPTK Petra officially diaktenotariskan. The formation of YPTK Petra marked the beginning of the independence of Petra Christian University, which has its own governing body, which is separately juridical from PPPK Petra.

As a newly established campus, UK Petra in its early days moved and occupied several buildings, starting from Jalan Embong Wungu dan Jalan W.R. Supratman pada tahun in 1961, at alan Indrapura, Jalan Embong Kemiri, Jalan Panglima Sudirman 73, And JJalan Kalianyar. In 1973, the university campus finally settled at Jalan Siwalankerto till this day.

Petra Christian University had grown as one of the universities in Indonesia with domestic and international students.

Current Development

Green Building Petra Christian University

Green Building Petra Christian University. Currently, UK Petra has a student about 10,000 people who come from various regions in Indonesia and abroad. Courses includes Postgraduate and Strata 1 (S1) programs consisting of six faculties, namely: Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Civil Engineering & Planning, Industrial Technology Faculty, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Arts & Design, and Faculty of Communication Science. In addition to academic education programs, UK Petra also organizes several professional programs that provide practical knowledge and skills for professionals, high school and vocational students.

The entire teaching and learning process of universities is held in an area of ​​101,782 m², located at alan Siwalankerto 103-105, 121-131, dan 142-144 Surabaya, which is easily accessible by various means of transportation. In 2013, UK Petra began to build a the first environmentally friendly building within its campus in Surabaya.

Service-Learning Asia Network

Petra Christian University is an anchor member of the Service-Learning Asia Network (SLAN) was created by International Christian University (ICU) in 2004 with assistance from the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia as an outgrowth of the first service-learning conference in Asia hosted by ICU in 2002. The objective of this network is to further exchanges, research, curriculum development and evaluation among Asian education institutions in service-learning. The organisation also sought to build a network of service-learning providers and aims to gain recognition in Asia.[1][1][3][4][5][6]

In connection to the Service-Learning Asia Network, Petra Christian University hosted the 6th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning (APRCSL) from 28 May 2017 to 2 June 2017 themed theme of "Educating the Heart: Nurturing a Fruitful Life through Service-Learning." [7]
