Islamic University, Bangladesh (Bengali: ইসলামী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, বাংলাদেশ), commonly known as Islamic University (IU), Kushtia (Bengali: ইবি), is one of the major public research universities in Bangladesh and the largest seat of higher education in the south-west part of the country [1] financially aided by the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and financed by the government of Bangladesh through University Grants Commission, Bangladesh. On 22 November 1979, the foundation of the Islamic University was set up in Kushtia[2] and it is operated under the Islamic University Act of 1980.[3] Islamic University began operations on 28 June 1986. It is 7th university in the country and the first university in the land of independent Bangladesh which was established after acquiring independence from then West Pakistan in 1971. It is a major international center for an excellent integration of Islamic studies with general studies and studies of modern science, engineering and technology. The university provides both local and foreign students with the facilities of undergraduate studies, postgraduate research and teaching.The standard of teaching is high and the facilities both for academic and extracurricular activities are of good quality. It is a campus-oriented university, where the academic and administrative buildings, residential halls and gymnasium, central cafeteria and auditorium are all on one self-contained 175-acre site at Shantidanga-Dulalpur, beside the Kushtia-Khulna highway. It is located about 24 km south and 22 km north of the Kushtia and Jhenidah district-towns, respectively.[4][5]

History

On 1 December 1976 then government announced the establishment of the Islamic University to promote Islamic System of education and to co-ordinate with Islamic Education and other branches of modern education in the country . Islamic University, Kushtia was founded on 22 November 1979 at Shantidanga-Dulalpur (Kushtia-Jhenidah) based on the recommendation of ‘Islamic University Planning Committee’ on 7 January 1977 headed by M. A. Bari including other seven members.Then the Islamic University Act was passed by National Assembly of Bangladesh on 27 December 1980.The main objective for establishing Islamic University is “to provide for instruction in theology and other fields of Islamic Studies and comparative jurisprudence and such other branches of learning at Graduatge and Postgraduate level as the University may think fit and make provision for research including Post-Doctorate research and training for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge”[Clause 5(a), The Islamic University Act 1980(37)]. On 1 January 1981 the government of Bangladesh appointed A. N. M. Mamtajuddin Choudhury as the first vice-chancellor and the university became operational that year.[6]

As construction of several important buildings began, a presidential decree was issued on 15 May 1982 to shift the university from Shantidanga-Dulalpur to Boardbazar, Gazipur on an area of 50 acres. The construction of an academic building, two residential halls and other necessary infrastructures were completed. Initially two faculties (Faculty of Theology and Islamic Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences) with four departments (Al-Quran, Dawah, Accounting, Management) were established and 300 students were enrolled. In 1987, two more departments (Sharia and Economics) were established. On 28 December 1988, while the infrastructure development and academic activities were in full swing, the university was again shifted to Shantidanga-Dulalpur (Kushtia-Jhenidah).

In 1991 five more departments — Bengali, English, Arabic, Islamic History, and Public Administration — were established.

On 23 June 2009, an Act of Parliament assigned the President as chancellor, replacing the Prime Minister.[7]

It is mention-able that the department of Information and Communication Engineering (ICE) of Islamic University in Kushtia was opened in 1998 as the pioneer department in that name in Bangladesh. In addition, "ICE Innovation Lab", the first ever Internet of Things (IoT) lab in Bangladesh, was inaugurated at the department of Information and Communication Engineering (ICE) of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia on 21 September 2016. Three former students of the department contributed to buy all the Internet of Things (IoT) related equipments including with Sensor, Rasperri pi, Arduino, Sheild etc. for the Innovation Lab.[8][9][10]

On 25 September 2017, 8 more departments— Law and Land Management, Development Studies, Social Welfare, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmacy, Environmental Science & Geography, Human Resources Management (HRM),Tourism and Hospitality Management — are established.[11][12]

Now there are 33 departments under five faculties—modern applied sciences, technological, and engineering subjects were included with the ordinary departments.

Administration

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari, who writes under the pen name Rashid Askari, was appointed on 21 August 2016.[13][14]Professor Dr. M. Shahinoor Rahman has been the pro vice-chancellor since 20 February 2013.[15] The treasurer is Professor Dr. Md. Selim Toha.[16]

  • Undergraduate/Bachelor's Degree: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Theology and Islamic Studies (BTIS), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Social Science (BSS), Bachelor of Law (LL.B).
  • Graduate/Master's Degree: Master of Science (M.Sc), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Theology and Islamic Studies (MTIS), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Social Science (MSS), Master of Law (LL.M).
  • Post Graduate Research Degree: M.Phil, Ph.D
  • Evening MBA Program: Evening MBA Program was launched in the Faculty of Business Administration from July 2010. In three Departments i.e., Accounting & Information Systems, Management and Finance and Banking this program is being continued. Total 3 x 40 = 120 students are enrolled in this program in every semester (Jan-June-A and July–December-B). Now 14th batch is running their study in this program. 15th batch will be enrolled in July-Dec 2017 session.
  • In addition, Islamic University offers a Professional master's degree Programme in 'Development Studies'(MDS) under the Department of Politics and Public Administration.[44]

Islamic University regularly organizes national and international conferences and workshops in its campus to enhance the research capabilities of its students and faculties. Among the conferences and workshops organized by different faculties and departments, following are notable:

  • National Workshop on Networking and ISP set up (System Administration) using LINUX' organized by the department of Information and Communication Engineering (ICE) on 27–29 March 2009.
  • International seminar titled ‘Role of Microbial Proteases in their own metabolism and host Infection’ in September 2015, organized by the Applied Nutrition and Food Technology(ANFT) Department of Islamic University in collaboration with Nagasaki University, Japan.[46][47][48]
  • 'MOOC-GERMANPROBASHE SEMINAR' organized by the Department of Information & Communication Engineering (ICE) on 14 January 2016"
  • Seminar on self-assessment on 3 March 2016, arranged by the Law and Muslim Jurisprudence Department of the university with the help of University Grant Commission (UGC).[49][50][51]
  • A workshop on 'Effective Teaching of English: Best Practice' on 30 July 2016, jointly organized by the English Department of the university and Bangladesh English Language Teachers Association(BELTA), sponsored by the American Centre, US Embassy, Dhaka.[52][53]
  • A three-day workshop on 'Pure Pronunciation, News Presentation and Recitation’; ‘Abritti, Abrtti’, a campus-based organisation of recitation, in association with the IU English Department has organised the event with the slogan ‘Asun Suddhotar Chorcha Kori’ (let’s practice purity)on 27–29 August 2016 [54]
  • A career camp on ‘Information and Communication Technology’ was held at Islamic University (IU), Kushtia central auditorium on 5 October 2016.[55]

  • A seminar on ‘comparative study between Tennessee Williams and Nathaniel Hawthorne’ was held at Islamic University (IU), Kushtia on 19 April 2017.[59][60]
  • An international conference on ‘The Role of Nutrition in Health and Development’ was held on 6 May 2017 at Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia .[61][62][63][64][65][66][67]
  • A seminar on ‘the practices of communicative language teaching at private college level in Bangladesh: problem and solutions’ was held at Islamic University (IU), Kushtia on 2 May 2017.[68]
  • A seminar titled "Regression Analysis and Environmental Statistics" held at Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia on 6 June 2017.[69][70]
  • A programme on "Ethics of Teaching: Duties and Responsibilities of a University Teacher" was held at Islamic University on 15 July 2017.[71][72]
  • An international seminar on 'One Step Forward' was held at Islamic University (IU) on 23 July 2017; Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering department of the university organized the seminar [73]
  • An international seminar on ‘Contemporary Trends in Folklore' was held at Islamic University in Kushtia on 30 July 2017.[74]

Convocations

The first convocation of the university was held on 27 April 1993.[75] Since then, a second convocation was held on 5 December 1999 and the third on 28 March 2002.

Student body

The university has about 16,000 regular students.[77] There are seven residential halls for students, including four of 2000 seats for male and three of 1500 seats for female students. This capacity is not enough and students usually live in two adjacent cities, Kushtia and Jheniadah. The university has approximately 70 buses (both owned and hired) to bring those students to the campus.

IU has two large playground, one is for playing cricket and another for playing football. These two are used as venue of annual athletics competition of the university as well as cricket, football, hockey competitions. Moreover, these two venues are very popular for inter-university football and cricket competition. Students can access the facility all year round. IU has tennis court beside the gymnasium building. It also has a gymnasium cum indoor stadium near the halls of residence where students can do gymnastics and play basketball, badminton during leisure, and this gymnasium is used almost every year for inter-university basketball, badminton competition.
