Purpose of editing
Hello: What is the point in editing Wikipedia? What do we get out of making appropriate corrections and adding content? Stapmoshun (talk) 01:24, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- ☞ Question duplicated at Wikipedia:Teahouse#Purpose of editing – Thjarkur (talk) 02:10, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is a place where people should be able to learn various things (since it is an encyclopedia), and we need to use good grammar because otherwise professional people using this Wiki will get confused. The more we edit this place, the more info and the more knowledge for the world. Good grammar is just something that's necessary in any writing to make it less confusing. Need some quick help, please!
I've just taken ages to compile a whole lot of evidence to start an SPI, typed into the box provided by Twinkle, but just got the message "Retrieving discussion page: Failed to save edit: ⧼titleblacklist-custom-SPI⧽". I've tried to get onto the online IRC help, but its just whirring away and not loading. Can anyone advise if there's a way to save that data I submitted? Laterthanyouthink (talk) 05:52, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Actually, ignore that - I've just discovered the other Twinkle option, using Sockpuppeteer, which seems to have a better interface, and I'm just painstakingly copying and pasting from my very useful Clipdiary app... Laterthanyouthink (talk) 06:00, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
How to create/register a new WIKIPEDIA page
Hi,
I want to create a new WIKIPWDIA page for my great grandfather Seth Mai Dayal on WIKIPEDIA. He has reference of his name in below Wikipedia page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maham
Can you please let me know how can i create the same? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.220.230.151 (talk) 08:37, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- You'll find advice at WP:Your first article. As you are related (though rather distantly) to the subject you also ought to read about conflict of interest. --David Biddulph (talk) 09:08, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- If your subject Seth Mai Dayal is notable by our specific definition (see:WP:N) then we want a Wikipedia article, and we will help you make it better. If he is not notable, we will delete any such article, no matter how good it is otherwise, so please start by finding reliable sources (WP:RS) that establish his notability before you waste your time and ours on a futile effort. Good luck! I hope you succeed. -Arch dude (talk) 14:08, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
Referencing
Dear Everybody
I submitted an article by means of "paste and copy". The article was extensively referenced (74 endnotes. To my dismay I discovered that all references (numbers in text at the appropriate places) disappeared from the text on the Wiki page. I then "pasted and copied" all my references in the section "References", but there was (of course) no connection to the main text. I then got a message from one of your editors to the effect that my text was not acceptable because it lacked references. Is there a way to insert the text with references into the Wiki, or do I really need to go through the (complex) process of referencing you outline on your "help pages" all over again? I should like to add that I hold a PhD in Philosophy and have published some books, so am very familiar with the process of and need for referencing.

- Fixed – Automatically converting Endnote citations to Wikipedia citations isn't supported yet, but it can be done with some scripting. You may find it easier to use the VisualEditor directly next time, but it is up to you. – Thjarkur (talk) 16:47, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
Donations
I am more than willing to help Wikipedia.org remain completely free of external influences, but I would like to know that this organization will remain 100% unbiased concerning any and all information it posts. I also understand that all people are biased to some extent, but I believe that having to oppositely biased people proofread an article is another way to remain unbiased. Free information is the greatest gift we can give our children, and that information’s accuracy is my greatest concern.

- Article editors are all volunteers, the Wikimedia Organization mainly covers legal and hosting and does not intervene in content matters. The foundation has enough money as it is and does not need more donations, the best way you can help would be to become an editor yourself :) – Thjarkur (talk) 15:19, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hello, Taft. I'm not quite clear what response you are looking for, but if you are wanting to make a suggestion for improving how Wikipedia operates, the best place to do that is the Village Pump - probably the "Proposals" section. --ColinFine (talk) 16:00, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- 100% unbiased is an impossible standard for pretty much everything. Clarityfiend (talk) 21:01, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- All Wikipedia editors (about 100,000 of us in the last 30 days) are unpaid volunteers, each of whom does whatever they wish to do, subject only to review by other editors who try to correct any breach of our policies and guidelines by reverting edits and discussing them to reach consensus (WP:BOD). This chaotic process is surprisingly effective. You are an editor, and you wish to counter bias in articles. You will be most effective by actually editing biased articles to add reliably sourced (WP:RS) opposing views and by removing unsourced biased statements. You can also add {{npov}} tags, but that is the lazy approach: you are merely asking other editors to do the work. You can also join the WP:Countering systematic bias project if you feel it addresses the sort of bias that concerns you. -Arch dude (talk) 16:01, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
Sectarian content that attempts to depict Dr Waiton as anti-Semitic or transphobic has been removed.
Someone has created a page about me - Stuart Waiton. It has been created with the sole purpose of depicting me as anti-Semitic and transphobic. I am neither of these things. I have tried to edit it but the original returns. Is there anything I can do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stopsectarians (talk • contribs) 15:29, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hello Stopsectarians. I am one of the editors who undid your edit. First, the resason why I undid your edit was because you removed sourced content. Since it is sourced, it can stay, the artical appeaers to be netural to me. Second, you have what is called a Conflict of Intrest. You need to decalre this on your userpage and follow the guidelines outlined on WP:COI. I hope I was able to answer your question to your satisfaction. LakesideMinersCome Talk To Me! 15:39, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Link: Stuart Waiton. You can for example start a discussion at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard and request input on whether this is valid for inclusion, but since Wikipedia summarizes what reliable sources have said and reliable sources give disproportionate attention to "controversies", our articles do sadly often end up just summarizing whatever controversies people may have been involved in (Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing). – Thjarkur (talk) 15:42, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- All right, the first insinuation was a WP:BLP violation since it did not involve you directly. The second insinuation is reliably sourced, but I've reworded it in sentence form rather than as a collection of quotes. I don't believe collections of quotes belong in any BLP, collections of quotes always sound like attacks or ridicule even when they include the same information as the prose form. – Thjarkur (talk) 16:08, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
Polls on Scottish Independence
The Herald poll released in late October 2019 showing support for Independence at close to 60% and showing high support for the SNP is not listed. It should. Why isn't it??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.151.158.201 (talk • contribs) 2019-11-20T17:29:36 (UTC)
- I presume this is about the article Proposed second Scottish independence referendum#Opinion polling? (It would be very helpful if people asking about details in a particular article told us which of our six million articles they were referring to, instead of leaving us to guess). The usual answer to "Why isn't X in Wikipedia" is "Because nobody has put it in". If you have a reliable source for the Herald Poll, you are welcome to add it to the article; or if you are not sure how, suggest it (preferably with a citation to the source) at Talk:Proposed second Scottish independence referendum. --ColinFine (talk) 17:45, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

Quick question about pings
If I wanted to ping CASSIOPEIA, would {{ping|Cassiopeia}} work? In other words, I'm asking if pings are case sensitive. I read WP:PING, but it doesn't say much about this. Interstellarity (talk) 21:50, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

- Valereee, It seems like you're telling me that pings are case sensitive. Is that correct? Interstellarity (talk) 21:58, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

- Yes, Wikipedia auto-capitalizes the first letter of all pages. User:martin of sheffield isn't a link to your userpage while User:martin of Sheffield is. The ping system looks for new links to userpages. – Thjarkur (talk) 23:09, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- In passing, I have a small CSS setting that highlights my name on pages. Your example of "martin of Sheffield" highlights, just as "Martin of Sheffield" does. "martin of sheffield" remains a redlink with no highlighting. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 23:26, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

Block my Talk page
Since, as you told me, I can't delete my wikipedia account as I requested, and I am not planning to do the contributions anymore, would you "ban" the editor Theroadislong from my account and specifically from my Talk page. I don't want he followed me after deleting my article, and attacking me. It was not my expectation when I wanted to do my contributions to wikipedia. What is disappointment. And I don't want to have any discussion with this editor, or read his input about me, I am done. Please help me with it. Thank you, Toreeva (talk) 19:46, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- You are free to respond with "User X, please don't write to me again here" on your talk page, users usually respect that request. But it's probably not necessary since there is little reason to contact users on their talk page if they are no longer active editors. – Thjarkur (talk) 20:03, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- No it does not work, bec. I wrote that I don't want any discussion anymore, or Stop talking.. Does not work. Please do "ban" of that editor, not only from Talk page but also from my name, so I will not get any response in the future. Hope you understand my request. Regards,Toreeva (talk) 22:02, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- Toreeva, Theroadislong has not edited your talk page since the 16th November. --ColinFine (talk) 22:50, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- I have not once attacked Toreeva or deleted her article? The article Natalia Toreeva has been deleted nine times, twice at WP:AFD none of the nominations were mine. The user does appear to have a fundamental miss-understanding of how Wikipedia works especially with regard to reliable sources. Theroadislong (talk) 23:05, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- This might be better off at the administrators' noticeboard if I'm not misunderstanding the request, if the user hasn't been previously respecting your requests. – John M Wolfson (talk • contribs) 23:21, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
This is indeed the wrong venue for this complaint, ANI is where you would need to go to seek a remedy like the one you are asking for. However, I looked at the messages Theroadislong left on your talkpage, and I see nothing that would be likely to be criticised, let alone sanctioned. Their notes to you about reliable sources were civil and accurate - neither IMDB, nor any language version of Wikipedia, is considered RS - as is made explicitly clear in our guidelines, which they gave you links to. All Theroadislong has done is give you pointers on how to improve your editing - this complaint seems to be without merit, and taking it to ANI would likely be futile. GirthSummit (blether) 23:32, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- Since their request sounded more like "I'm not really interested in talking more about this" rather than "do not write to me again" I would probably not have picked upon it myself. But Toreeva, I think your request has been made clear now. Getting criticism on Wikipedia can sometimes feel way harsher than the sender ever intended, but we do often need to be receptive to constructive criticism. – Thjarkur (talk) 23:46, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
Than you are NOT Help desk. You have to learn how to "hear" another person. I wrote the article and asked Help desk to help with editing, because English is my second lang. Instead Theroadislong and 2 other editors started cut the article from 7 p to 1 p, and than submitted for "deletion". How come not qualified editor who does not know Russian lang, Russian art of that time I described (1970-80th), so any citation was named as not reliable sources, can recommend for deletion? It is easier to delete than to show that the editor is not qualified for the editing of this article. Official docs and webs in Russian database - not reliable? Something wrong is behind of this rejection and without good faith. I submitted complain to DRN and the same editor Theroadislong deleted this input, and Talk page where you can see our dispute. Stop tell lies at least to yourself. I don't see the answer for my question, that's why I don't want to continue the discussion. I don't see the respect and see only waste of time. I am out of it. Thank you for your time.Toreeva (talk) 03:27, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
- Please stop. You are being disrespectful to volunteers who are trying to help you. The DRN case is at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/Archive 182#Natalia Toreeva, where you attacked the DRN volunteer ("How "low" you can go? Not me. Where is the purpose in your life, God has given you? Where is your integrity? You reached your destination. Have a peace in your decision") Stop attacking other editors. Stop now. If you don't stop it is very likely that you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. --Guy Macon (talk) 04:13, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
- If it helps I am perfectly happy to stop editing Toreeva's talk page, but I suspect that what she actually wants is for me to stop editing any article that involves her too, such as her unsourced self promotion at Soviet Nonconformist Art. Theroadislong (talk) 11:16, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

If your research found facts that have already been published in such sources, then please provide those sources so we can incorporate those facts. You are in an unusual situation, because your local newspaper may be interested enough in your research to publish it, and that may suffice. I am trying to change the name of a company in a wikipedia page, however, the program doesn't offer a section to edit this portion (header of the page) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:1170:9FA0:75C0:68C5:9BB8:9F56 (talk) 19:01, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
- This is done by moving the page to a new name. You can request the move at WP:RM RudolfRed (talk) 19:19, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
Searching
So, like many others I tend to go for Wikipedia when I want to know more about a subject. Recently I have been having a hard time finding articles that I would expect to exist. For example, there does not seem to be a designated page for the sleep cycle of Wolves, and in-fact when I search the Wolf Wikipedia page, aside from mentioning that they are nocturnal once, it doesn’t mention sleep at all. I recall reading(on Wikipedia) that wolves often sleep with one eye open, so I am fairly sure that there is a page or at least a subsection somewhere that talks about them and yet I am just unable to find it using the normal search bar. Is there someplace else I should be looking?

- @SW15B: you can do "advanced searches". Do an ordinary search (like "wolf") but then click on the last suggestion, which will be "containing wolf". Then at the top fo the search results page, ther is an "advanced search" box that you can fill in. -Arch dude (talk) 00:18, 23 November 2019 (UTC)

Re:publish article about our hospital
Hi,
we need some advise to publish article about our Hospital. Tell me how to create and publish
Thank you
- Hi V2Groups and welcome to the Teahouse. Your user name and use of "we" suggest that you might be an organisation. Wikipedia does not allow organisations to have an account, so you might like to create an individual account to be used by one person. It also appears that you might have a WP:Conflict of interest or even WP:Paid status in trying to write the article. You need to comply with those policies (click the links for details). Having said all that, I'm not trying to discourage you. You might like to read WP:Your first article, and remember that any draft article should be based on what WP:Reliable sources say about your hospital, not on what you know or on what the hospital want to say about itself. If you tell us the name of the hospital, we might be able to give more specific help. Dbfirs 07:21, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
adding to existing page
May I ask how can I add the name of my film to the Documentaries on architecture existing page? how can I start a new page after having an account? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Niliport (talk • contribs) 23 November 2019 10:56 (UTC)
- @Niliport: It seems from your contributions that you have been trying to add a film to the category pages and that your edits have been undone (reverted). To be added to the category, the film first has to have a Wikipedia article about it, which means that it has to pass the general notability guidelines or the more specific film guidelines. Any article would need to be created by editors without a connection to the subject and would report on what has been written about the topic in independent reliable sources. Wikipedia has little, if any, interest in what a subject, or any person connected with it, has to say about itself. This is known as a conflict of interest and is one of the ways in which Wikipedia tries to ensure neutrality. See also WP:PAID and make any necessary disclosures. If and when an article does exist, the category would be added to it not the other way around. If you look at any Wikipedia article, you will see categories listed right at the bottom of the page. How to create Wikipedia Page
Hi sir/madam,
Please need your suggestions, please help me how to create Wikipedia account......
Thank you Rakesh — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rktofs (talk • contribs)
- Hey, Rakesh! It's really simple, just search up the title you want and see if it's not chosen yet, and if it isn't, Wikipedia will automatically ask you if you want to start making the article. Hopefully this helped!Nambaseking01 (talk) 13:24, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
