Thanks

Thanks for fixing my mistake on the 2018 European Tour page. Actually, I didn't mean to put "TBA" in the location slot. I had copy and pasted from another page, and I simply forgot to take the "TBA" out. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 13:34, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Johnsmith2116: Seems like the Fiji International is on too: http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2017/tournamentid=2017068/news/newsid=339421.html Nigej (talk) 13:36, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I added it. Funny though, when I saw the link you posted above, I initially thought it was a mistake, because it has "2017" in it. Strange that it would have that when it's a new article. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 13:53, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New page reviewer granted

Hello Nigej. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. Biblio (talk) 18:15, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

I was seconds away from adding the talk page to the World Cup of Golf, when I found you had beaten me to it. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 20:48, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

EurAsia Cup TV times

What does your TV schedule show for the EurAsia Cup? Here, the times are peculiar in the sense that it seems to finish a little early each day. My schedule shows 11:00 PM to 2:00 AM (4:00 to 7:00 AM your time). Do you get any more coverage than that, later into the day? For me, it seems a little early to finish. I would have thought that it would go another couple of hours into the day. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:04, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

http://www.skysports.com/watch/golf-on-sky seems to show 03:30 to 10:00 http://www.eurasiacup.com/web/EventInfo/ has start at 08:35 (00:35 GMT) on days 1 and 3, 09:35 (01:35 GMT) day 2 so coverage is clearly not live. Nigej (talk) 18:23, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Joburg Open

With the event now being tri sanctioned with the Asian Tour, and with 30 more players, did you see the breakdown of the nationalities? Here is the difference with the continents involved with last month's tournament compared to the tournament in early 2017:

+7 North America
+1 South America
−4 Europe
+5 Oceania
+8 Asia
+13 Africa

As you can see, Europe is the only continent to lose numbers. Strange. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 13:46, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for fixing my mistake on the Singapore Open page, it was simply an oversight on my part. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 09:52, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for disambiguating that name, an oversight on my part (again). Johnsmith2116 (talk) 10:41, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tylenol par 3 shootout. Should these wins really count as professional wins ?.

Hi i am just wondering if par 3 shootouts really are professional wins that need to be added to players pages ?. Ie we do not count the Masters par 3 contest and that is much the same thing would you agree. These are mickey mouse events i do not think they should be included, what do you think ?. Regards 31.200.174.254 (talk) 05:56, 12 February 2018 (UTC).[reply]

Tylenol Par-3 Shootout. I suspect it was a serious event, although a made-for-TV skins game. The Masters par 3 is just a bit of fun. I'm thinking of the Tylenol Par-3 Shootout more like the Hero World Challenge and as such puting in Other Wins. Nigej (talk) 09:31, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nigej the Hero World Challenge carries world ranking points. It is a par 3 contest this is not tournament golf !. Wikipedia all of a sudden has to add everything as professional wins when some events are not !. Would you agree ?. 178.167.170.11 (talk) 14:41, 12 February 2018 (UTC) regards[reply]

I wouldn't even give the Hero World Challenge ranking points but it's not my decision. Wikipedia tends to follow the official line even when we think it's wrong. The problem with "professional wins", is that there's no accepted list and we have to decide for ourselves. Personally I'm happy with par-3 events. After all it's just golf on a shorter course. Nigej (talk) 19:27, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

My point is you think its ok but does that make it a professional event. My point is the Masters par 3 contest does not count because it is a mickey mouse event like this gimmicky tylenol event and really come on they are never pro events ?. Regards 92.251.239.177 (talk) 04:45, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can you create a page for Harvey Chandler for me please ?.

Hi this is a new Snooker player that won the European Championship Mens amateur event. He has received a two year tour card and will be a professional next season.if you create the page for me I can fill in the details. His DOB is April 19th 1995 , 22 years old. WGC-Mexico Championship

The tournament is down in players this year by 12, from 77 to 65. I don't know why. Five of the six continents had their number of players go down. Europe went down 8, from 25 to 17. Do you know why? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 20:16, 27 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to be just a combination of year-to-year differences and a few of the top-50 not turning up. Nigej (talk) 08:24, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Okay thanks. Although now, I'm having a difficult time getting the leaderboard to load on the European Tour website, on the Mexico event and the Tshwane event. I hope the problem is only the website, and not my computer. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 14:54, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Review Newsletter No.10

Hello Nigej, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • ACTRIAL's six month experiment restricting new page creation to (auto)confirmed users ended on 14 March. As expected, a greatly increased number of unsuitable articles and candidates for deletion are showing up in the feed again, and the backlog has since increased already by ~30%. Please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day.

Paid editing

  • Now that ACTRIAL is inoperative pending discussion, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

Nominate competent users for Autopatrolled

  • While patrolling articles, if you find an editor that is particularly competent at creating quality new articles, and that user has created more than 25 articles (rather than stubs), consider nominating them for the 'Autopatrolled' user right HERE.

News

  • The next issue Wikipedia's newspaper The Signpost has now been published after a long delay. There are some articles in it, including ACTRIAL wrap-up that will be of special interest to New Page Reviewers. Don't hesitate to contribute to the comments sections. The Signpost is one of the best ways to stay up date with news and new developments - please consider subscribing to it. All editors of Wikipedia and associated projects are welcome to submit articles on any topic for consideration by the The Signpost's editorial team for the next issue.

NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018

Hello Nigej, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

  • Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

  • A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

  • There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

  • Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

  • The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

  • Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
  • The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

Shot Clock Masters

Do you know why this event has 36 fewer players this year than it had last year? 156 last year as the Lyoness Open, and 120 this year with the new name. And it has 33 fewer Europeans this year than last year. Any idea why so many fewer players? It seems odd they would do this, there is plenty of daylight at this time of year. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 11:41, 6 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No idea really. Seems a little odd since the whole purpose of the shot clock is to speed things up, which should allow a bigger field. I can only think that they only have a limited number of clocks or referees who can use them. Looks like they will need 20 on the first two days. Nigej (talk) 11:52, 6 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal on the World Seniors Championship is unreal

Hi as you can see what I have been dealing with some guy keeps changing the status of the World Seniors Championship because he thinks it relates to the main tour. The Seniors have their own tour like the golf Seniors. He is editing this from multiple ips. Can you help me stop this ?. Regards 178.167.134.252 (talk) 22:09, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • LOL. Read what is vandal first. Here is the sources:
    • "Open to any player not currently on tour aged over 40" (from pdf-file in 2017 article);
    • "This tournament is only open to Amateur players not currently in the 128" (from pdf-file in 2018 article);
  • So, only amateur (non-tour) players were eligible to play since 2017. "Non-ranking events" is a terminology used for the events with pro players (otherwise, Q-School, IBSF championships are the "non-ranking events" also). All players outside PRO-128 are amateurs; see references. 46.211.110.147 (talk) 22:13, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

But you are not listening World Seniors events are part of a new World Seniors Tour like in golf. Jimmy White, Ken Doherty and Steve Davis have played in the events. It is also opened up by Jason Francis to anybody who gets through qualifying can join the legends in the tournament proper. It is a Seniors Tour like in golf and all the editors agree here they are non-ranking wins on the Seniors Tour OK! 178.167.134.252 (talk) 22:24, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • They were "non-ranking" until 2016 only when they were organized by World Snooker and eligible for the main tour pro-players. Since 2017, seniors events were organized by Snooker Legends, not World Snooker even, and open for the amateur players only, per cited references. 46.211.110.147 (talk) 22:28, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It does not matter Snooker Legends actually started all the Seniors World Tour events so you are wrong. They were only introduced in the last season 4 of them as non-ranking ranking events OK? . It's a Seniors Tour event non ranking. And by the way the WPBSA/SNOOKER Legends are jointly running them next year 178.167.134.252 (talk) 22:35, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You are not listening to anything I am saying Jason Francis wants qualifiers to get through sectional qualifying to play the legends on the World Seniors Tour. On the Snooker talk pages if you go back and read the Status of these events Betty Logan. Andy Gray and Nigej all agreed the status of the Seniors Tour events should be non-ranking go back and check if you like ? 178.167.134.252 (talk) 22:53, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • It's a pity for you, but Mark Davis, Jimmy White and Ken Doherty didn't play in 2017 and 2018 because they were not eligible for that year's editions, as it was exclusively for non-tour players, per sources. "Ranking" events are played with Top-128 pro-players (and included into the world ranking), and all "non-ranking" events (Masters, Champions League, Champions of Champions, Hong Kong, Haining) are played for same Top-128 pro-players (with the addition of the some wild cards). 46.211.121.242 (talk) 22:56, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Comment

I take a simple view. We can't call the 2017 World Seniors Championship an amateur event when the winner wins £10,000. That would be just plain confusing - Wikipedia is meant to be readable by ordinary folk. See Amateur sports: "Amateur sports are sports in which participants engage largely or entirely without remuneration." Maybe the organisers have some strange idea what "amateur" means or maybe the participants are "amateurs" in some strange sense I don't understand, but the event can't be called "amateur" surely. Whether we call it "non-ranking" (as a catch-all for anything that isn't a ranking event) or something else I don't really care. Nigej (talk) 06:03, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Kolon Korea Open

I was looking through my TV cable box schedule, and it is showing that Golf Channel is planning to show us live coverage of the Korea Open, which is unusual. It might be a mistake, and it might not be, time will tell in the next few days. I was wondering, does your TV schedule indicate that you will be receiving coverage of the Korea Open in the UK? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 10:21, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No, nothing in the UK, certainly not live. Nigej (talk) 10:26, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks. I've found the cable box schedule with mistakes before. Late last year, it was showing that Golf Channel was going to show the Australian Masters. Clearly that was going to be a mistake, as the Australian Masters hasn't been played in a couple years now. .. Usually, the only time that Golf Channel would make it a point to show us an Asian Tour event was when it was late in the year, and they would show us the Thailand Golf Championship (which was not played last year anyway). But other than that, Golf Channel doesn't typically show us any Asian based golf tournaments that aren't sanctioned with the PGA Tour. Hopefully this year will be different, because I'm hoping they show the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament and the Japan Open, both of which are on the Japan Tour, as you know. They especially should show the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament, since Brooks Koepka will be trying to win his 3rd in a row. Our Golf Channel has been known to make exceptions; in February 2014, they decided to show the Ladies Australian Masters because Cheyenne Woods was in it. And two years ago, they decided to show the Singapore Open because Jordan Spieth was in it. So, with Brooks Koepka being the hot thing of the moment, Golf Channel really should make another exception and finally show us the Dunlop Phoenix tournament. We'll find out later this year. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 10:41, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well it turns out that the TV box schedule was correct, Golf Channel is showing the Korea Open. I'm thinking they are showing it because it's in the Open qualifying. Some recognizable players in it are Kevin Na, KT Kim, Keith Horn, YE Yang, Richard T. Lee, Gaganjeet Bhullar, Sang Moon Bae, Miguel Tabuena, Terry Pilkadaris, Jeev Milkha Singh, and Jbe' Kruger. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 08:34, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That must be right I think - that they are showing it because it's in the Open qualifying. Probably being an Open qualifying event has improved the field too, although perhaps its just that its an Asian tour event this year (some 50 non-Korean). Seems to be an event on the way up. Nigej (talk) 08:46, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

British Amateur coverage

Do you know if there is any TV coverage of the Amateur Championship there in the UK? I don't think we have ever had it on TV here, not on Golf Channel nor any other network. I keep hoping to find it on TV here some day. .. Do you get at least a little TV coverage of it there? And if so, do you know how much? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 13:15, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There's a daily highlight program I believe. 30 minutes or a hour. I see we're at the last-16 stage this afternoon. Nigej (talk) 13:42, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

3M Open conflict

I want to ask your opinion, how to go about changing over a tournament from one tour to another.

Last year, when the tournament in the Dominican was changed from the Web.com Tour to the PGA Tour, we kept the page as it is, and simply added a new frame on the page to show that it is now a PGA Tour event.

Well now, the 3M Championship on the Champions Tour will be called the 3M Open and changed over to the PGA Tour. The problem is that I found that an editor (one I have never noticed as a golf editor) has made a seperate page for the 3M Open.

So, here is the question; do you think the new page should be kept? Or do you think we should ask for it to be deleted, and then simply use the existing 3M page next year for the 3M Open, the same as we continued to use the page for Dominican event once it was changed over to a PGA Tour event? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 16:50, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's true that we usually keep the same page when tour affiliations change. It's very common outside US/Europe - especially with the Asian Tour/OneAsia rivalry that existed for a few years. I think in this case (the 3M Open) that it's more than that. Seniors event to main tour and with a different name. Probably the PGA Tour are thinking of it as a new event too. So I'm inclined to say leave it as it is - new page for the 3M Open. Nigej (talk) 17:01, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:51, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Open telecast question

Hi Nigej, I was wondering how extensive the coverage of the Open is in the UK? I read something in social media the other day in which many British viewers were upset about the way the coverage is being handled. Which network(s) is carrying it there, and for how long has that network been having it? Here, the Golf Channel/NBC family has had it since 2016, and they are currently giving nearly 50 hours combined. We actually receive more hours of coverage of the Open Championship than we receive of the US Open. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 06:22, 19 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's similar to last year. The BBC showing 2 hour highlights each evening: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00cq5w0/broadcasts/upcoming Sky has it's own pay channel with complete coverage. 14 hours straight today and tomorrow, 11 hours Sat and Sun. Nigej (talk) 06:47, 19 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I thought that I heard Sky had acquired the coverage not long ago, but I wasn't sure. Here in the States though, we don't receive any of the Sky networks, but we do receive the BBC World News network; it's one of only three non American based networks available here in the States. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 07:04, 19 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

I was putting Tom Lovelady's name in a minute ago, then I got an edit conflict notice. You beat me to it by a second or two. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 15:56, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

LOL. Yes, just beat you! Nigej (talk) 15:57, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

European Open TV coverage

I was wondering, are the 3rd and 4th rounds of the European Open shown live there, or are they shown on a delay? Here, with all that Golf Channel has to show for the week, there's a time conflict, and Golf Channel ends up showing the 3rd and 4th rounds on a 19 hour delay. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:37, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Did you find out if it is on a delay there like it is here? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:07, 28 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes live in the UK. European Open live until 4pm UK time (5pm German time) - last tee time is 11:45 UK time, then over to the Senior Open (where the last tee time is 2:40pm) until 7pm and then the PGA Tour after that's over. Sorry missed the question before. Nigej (talk) 19:16, 28 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I saw the posting a minute ago that McEvoy won. I will see the coverage of it when Golf Channel shows it late tonight at 2:00 AM. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 15:52, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

BMW PGA Championship winners template

I made this template some time ago ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:BMW_PGA_Championship_champions ... , and I was wondering if it should be added to the pages of all the winners, in the same way that the template for the Players Championship is added to the pages of all the winners for that one? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:37, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I guess it ought to be. Of course we don't have great coverage of individual events (only from 2011) but I don't see why that should be a problem. Nigej (talk) 18:45, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.12 30 July 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. (Purge)

Hello Nigej, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules
  • New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
  • Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
  • Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.
Editathons
  • Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
The Signpost
  • The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. If you have special messages to be published, or if you would like to submit an article (one about NPR perhaps?), don't hesitate to contact the editorial team here.

Do you know if the European Golf Team Championships is going to have a knockout portion after the group play is completed, much like the WGC Match Play has? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 16:47, 5 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There are semis and a final on the last day. 18 hole foursomes I think. Nigej (talk) 20:08, 5 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

TV coverage

It appears that we won't have any coverage of it on TV here in the States. Do you know if you will be able to see it on TV over there where you are? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 10:30, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The BBC are covering the European Championships extensively. I believe that includes the golf. How much the coverage will be I've not discovered. Eurosport are also covering the European Championships, but again I'm not sure of the golf. Seems they are covering at least the Sunday on the Eurosport Player. Nigej (talk) 18:11, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your response. We get BBC World News here, but not BBC Sport. This is really frustrating that we can't see the Euro Team Championships here, golf or otherwise. We get extensive coverage of the Premier League here in the States, so, it's not as if the American networks have any problem showing European/British sporting events. One network here even gives us the entire Tour de France. ... I guess all we can do here is hope to see some highlights of it. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 21:28, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
We also never get the The Amateur Championship nor the British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship. Can you imagine not being able to see the U.S. Amateur or U.S. Women's Amateur there in the UK? (Those are in the next couple of weeks.) Johnsmith2116 (talk) 21:33, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Scoring

What source are you using to record the scores? I see that you entered the score for the first match. I went to the europeanchampionships.com site, but it isn't listing the score, only the winning team. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 11:26, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

https://www.europeanchampionships.com/results/en/golf/daily-schedule.htm Nigej (talk) 12:10, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes thanks. But, that is where I was looking an hour ago, and at that time, they had not yet showed the score of the match. But yet, I noticed you had already loaded the score of that first match into Wikipedia. Were you looking at something else, something that told you the score before that site was showing it? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 12:54, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't have any problem but perhaps I was looking at a different time. This page doesn't give in-play scores, you have to click on LIVE to get those. Nigej (talk) 13:38, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Images being taken down

I was wondering if you know a way to be able to post images in the info box of golf tournaments without having them be at risk of being taken down? Fact is, a certain editor has gone around and removed a few of the images that I have uploaded, but usually only of the higher profile tournaments, such as the Players Championship and the Masters. It's frustrating, and I really don't know what the harm is. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:56, 10 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not my area at all really. Seems looking at The Players Championship, for instance, File:Players Championship logo.png has a WP:NFUR only for 2016 Players Championship. However "A separate, specific rationale must be provided each time the media file is used in an article." Since there was one for 2016 Players Championship but not one for Players Championship it was removed from the Players Championship article. Personally I find all this stuff so confusing or frustrating that I gave up adding images a long time ago. Nigej (talk) 20:17, 10 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

BMW PGA Championship

When this tournament moves to September next year, there will obviously be less daylight to work with. Do you happen to know if they will be lowering the players from 150 to a lower number? (Personally I don't know why they didn't put it in August instead, as it would be warmer outside and have more daylight to work with.) Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:09, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly I've no idea but I am reminded of the old Piccadilly World Match Play from Wentworth, which I used to watch as a lad. That was early October I think but there were problems with morning fog sometimes. Maybe early September will be ok. Nigej (talk) 19:17, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Speaking of that, I miss that Match Play tournament, it was fun. It's a shame how many tournaments have been canceled. The Volvo Golf Champions, too. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:24, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Off topic ... Approximately 90 minutes from the time I am typing this, TV coverage of the U.S. Amateur Championship gets underway from Pebble Beach, in the Fox family here in the States. Hopefully there is a decent amount of TV coverage of it over there in the UK. I remember when Matthew Fitzpatrick won it five years ago, becoming the first Englishman in over a century to win it. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:31, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ryder Cup TV coverage

Do you know how much coverage of the Cup is on TV there, and what network it is on? Hopefully it is generous coverage. .. Here, in the most recent Cup, Golf Channel gave us 10 and a half hours on Friday, and NBC gave us 16 hours on the weekend. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 04:55, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes 100% coverage on Sky Golf (pay) with highlights on the BBC in the evening (I believe). The Ryder Cup has a similar status to the Open, meaning that highlights must be made available. Nigej (talk) 05:04, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Mickelson/Woods

I learned that the exhibition match scheduled for late November is actually going to be on pay per view here in the USA. This came as a surprise, and a bit disappointing. I have no problem with pay per view, but golf on pay per view? ... Do you happen to know how it is going to be televised there in the UK? Will a regular network be showing it? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 02:02, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Gets mentioned on skysports: http://www.skysports.com/golf/news/12176/11479646/tiger-woods-and-phil-mickelson-set-for-7m-las-vegas-showdown but doesn't say whether they are covering it or not. Never heard of golf on pay-per-view here, usually boxing/wrestling. Nigej (talk) 05:08, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Boxing, wrestling, and UFC gets on pay per view here, along with a few other things, but I think this is the fist time golf will be on pay per view here. They could end up regretting it. People want to see golf, but that doesn't mean they will pay special to see it on TV. Some of the 1992 Summer Olympic games were put on pay per view TV here, and they lost million$, because people simply weren't going to pay to watch the Olympics; in the present day, the networks of NBC (Golf Channel's parent network) furnish extensive coverage of the Olympics, no pay per view at all, which is nice. Even last summer, NBC launched the Olympic Channel. I'm hoping that they will have coverage of the Youth Summer Olympics in October. ... Well anyway, time will tell if this golf match on pay per view was a good idea, or a flop. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 13:45, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
See Olympics Triplecast for details. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:05, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

U.S. Open tennis

I'm wondering about the coverage you have there, is it plentiful? Here for example, we have at least 11 hours of it today; ESPN has it from 12:00 to 6:00 PM, and then ESPN 2 has it from 6:00 to 11:00. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 20:31, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

From this year it's on Amazon Prime Video, which I know nothing about. Personally I'm more likely to watch the cycling (Vuelta a Espana). Nigej (talk) 20:41, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's okay. Watching the US Open tennis in the UK can be like people in the USA watching the Australian Open tennis, or people in Australia watching the Wimbledon tennis. The hours can be inconvenient because you can be up to the wee hours of the morning watching it. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 20:56, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Some of the American events seem to switch around a lot which confuses people I think. The PGA Championship seems a bit like that too. Nigej (talk) 21:00, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Speaking of switching, a few minutes ago I had to switch away from the coverage of the US Open, the evening matches are about to start, and they are having Kelly Clarkson do a 20 minute + performance, and I don't wannna see that, I only want to see the tennis. They are taking way too long to get to the match, in my view. Each year they do something like this, and it seems a bit overkill. I only want to see the tennis. Maybe others are sharing the same frustration at the moment. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 23:57, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Seems to me that many sports events finish too late nowadays. Do people really want to watch tennis at midnight? Nigej (talk) 04:57, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure. But, as I am typing this, I'm about to watch the Maria Sharapova match, and it is 10:00 PM. This likely be over until well past 12:00 AM, maybe 1:00. It's Currently 12:00 PM in Melbourne, Australia, though, so, it's easy for them. But, it may take a hearty bunch there in the UK to watch this match, as it is now 3:00 AM there. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 02:00, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think the main reason it went so late last night is because of the heat. It's so hot, they have to keep taking extended breaks to cool down. And the humidity makes it even worse. I'm currently watching the Stan Wawrinka match. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:25, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to see Murray eliminated. Maybe he will be more in form by the Australian Open. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 23:07, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
A bit like Tiger perhaps, you wonder at his age whether he'll ever come back to his best. Nigej (talk) 09:50, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. Well, if Mickelson can win a WGC at 48 years old, there's hope for many. As far as Murray, there are still two more Masters series events this year, the Shanghai Masters, and the Paris Masters. Maybe he can do well in those, if he plays in them. I don't think he is qualified for the ATP Finals in London. ... Currently watching Angelique Kerber vs the Swedish woman Larsson. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:19, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Also watching McIlroy's interview at TPC Boston. Being that it is Labour Day coming up, this tournament always goes Friday through Monday, so, we have to wait an additional day to watch it. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:31, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm watching the Cilic match on ESPN 2. It is going so late, it will be after 2:00 AM here soon, and 7:00 AM in the UK. It is in the fifth set. His opponent is an Australian; the time is almost 4:00 PM in Melbourne, Australia now. I bet the people down there can't believe this match is still going on. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 05:39, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Amazon coverage over here not going down too well so far https://www.bbc.com/news/business-45355186 Nigej (talk) 12:03, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yikes. I can imagine the difficulty in getting coverage in the UK for our Superbowl, or the AFL Grand Final. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 17:41, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
An amazing Nadal match finished a minute ago. It is after 2:00 AM here, and 7:00 AM there. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 06:05, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The women's semi finals are tonight. Depending on whom wins, we could end up with an all American women's championship match like we did last year. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 20:25, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This is off topic, but I am watching Fox Sports 2, the AFL playoffs. It's Geelong vs Melbourne. I am rooting for Melbourne because this is their first playoffs in twelve years, and they haven't won the championship in 54 years, exactly like my Cleveland Browns. I can't help but wonder if coverage of the AFL is there in the UK also. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 09:54, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so. I seem to remember odd big events (Grand Final?) but I'm not aware of any regular coverage. Personally I don't find it too interesting. I'd rather watch the cricket from MCG. Mind you the Aussie Rules pays a lot of the bills for the stadium. Big crowds. Nigej (talk) 10:31, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Coincidentally, this game is at the MCG. Currently the home team Melbourne is up 36 to 8 in the second quarter. ... Yes, I have seen the Big Bash League last year, I figure I'll see some more this year when the season starts. We get it on the network called Willow, which has only cricket.
Off Topic again, but, this Sunday, the Brickyard 400 race is taking place at the same time as the BMW Championship is being played. The funny thing is that both events are in the same family of networks here. The golf is on regular NBC, and the race is on NBC Sports Network. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 10:41, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Challenge Tour television question

Is there any TV coverage of the Challenge Tour there? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 01:33, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You have DOB = DOD? IP had DOD 1998.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 19:29, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm confused. Current version has him alive, which he is. Nigej (talk) 19:35, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm confused too. BUt the DOD is hidden, so. so. . . .19:36, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

Request reason:

I've been blocked from editing (or at least 31.46.229.204 has been blocked) by ProcseeBot. I'm not doing anything different to yesterday. According to whatismyip.com my Public IPv4 is: 31.46.229.204, my Local IP is: 192.168.88.243. No idea what this means. Am I using an Open Proxy?

Decline reason:

Yes, confirmed open proxy. You'll need to disable that if you wish to edit here. Yamla (talk) 14:12, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. @Yamla: I've tried various browsers on 2 lap tops and 2 mobile phone and all use 13.46.229.204, so it seems the Open Proxy is something to do with the ISP I'm using, not the settings in the browser. Does this mean I'm banned while I continue to use this ISP, or is there a way round it? Nigej (talk) 05:49, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That IP address belongs to Amazon, and is a different IP address than you earlier gave us. That, too, is a proxy. You are not using the IP address provided by your Internet Service Provider, you are using a proxy. I'm afraid there's no more information I have for you. --Yamla (talk) 11:33, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Yamla: Sorry should have said 31.46.229.204. Is there nowhere to go for advise? Nigej (talk) 11:58, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia volunteers can't provide technical support for your Internet access, I'm afraid. You could try contacting your ISP or technical support companies in your area. --Yamla (talk) 13:02, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018

Hello Nigej, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.

Project news
As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.
Other
Moving to Draft and Page Mover
  • Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
  • If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
  • Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
  • The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
  • The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.
List of other useful scripts for New Page Reviewing

  • Twinkle provides a lot of the same functionality as the page curation tools, and some reviewers prefer to use the Twinkle tools for some/all tasks. It can be activated simply in the gadgets section of 'preferences'. There are also a lot of options available at the Twinkle preferences panel after you install the gadget.
  • In terms of other gadgets for NPR, HotCat is worth turning on. It allows you to easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions.
  • MoreMenu also adds a bunch of very useful links for diagnosing and fixing page issues.
  • User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js(info): Installing scripts doesn't have to be complicated. Go to your common.js and copy importScript( 'User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js' ); into an empty line, now you can install all other scripts with the click of a button from the script page! (Note you need to be at the ".js" page for the script for the install button to appear, not the information page)
  • User:TheJosh/Scripts/NewPagePatrol.js(info): Creates a scrolling new pages list at the left side of the page. You can change the number of pages shown by adding the following to the next line on your common.js page (immediately after the line importing this script): npp_num_pages=20; (Recommended 20, but you can use any number from 1 to 50).
  • User:Primefac/revdel.js(info): Is requesting revdel complicated and time consuming? This script helps simplify the process. Just have the Copyvio source URL and go to the history page and collect your diff IDs and you can drop them into the script Popups and it will create a revdel request for you.
  • User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js(info): Creates a "Page Curation" link to Special:NewPagesFeed up near your sandbox link.
  • User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js: Creates links next to the title of each page which show up if it has been previously deleted or nominated for deletion.
  • User:Evad37/rater.js(info): A fantastic tool for adding WikiProject templates to article talk pages. If you add: rater_autostartNamespaces = 0; to the next line on your common.js, the prompt will pop up automatically if a page has no Wikiproject templates on the talk page (note: this can be a bit annoying if you review redirects or dab pages commonly).

Celia Barquín Arozamena

Leaving aside the matter of his tragic death, as a golfer, is she a notable enough? This is a serious question. Other wikis such as de.wiki are considering that winning one amateur championship is not relevant enough. She could've had a promising career, but we will never know. What is the criteria here on en.wiki. Thanks for your reply! From es.wiki Triplecaña (talk) 09:13, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As per WP:NGOLF part 4: "They have won at least one recognized amateur golf tournament at the national or international level". Now this is very loose in my view. I did try to change this, see: Wikipedia talk:Notability (sports)/Archive 30#Proposed change to WP:NGOLF (2) to restrict this criteria (for modern golfers) to "elite" WAGR events but got very little interest. Concerning Celia Barquín Arozamena; she won the European Ladies Amateur Championship in late July. This is an elite WAGR event, so that she would satisfy WP:NGOLF under either the current or my proposed change. WP:NSPORTS says "The article must provide reliable sources showing that the subject meets the general notability guideline or the sport specific criteria set forth below." I can see that she's at the bottom end of notability as a golfer, but using WP:NGOLF she is notable enough. I can assure you that if she hadn't won the European Ladies Amateur Championship, I wouldn't have created the article. Nigej (talk) 09:28, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oliver Fisher

Hi there, I don't know if you are on here (depending on what is going on with the block), but I am watching Oliver Fisher on a 59 watch, and he is currently co leading the Portugal Masters. Wherever you are, hopefully you are able to see it. He is currently 10 strokes under par through 12 holes today alone. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 10:47, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Back to my palatial country retreat (actually it's a semi-ruin) so I have wi-fi but can only edit my talk page. No golf coverage here. Nigej (talk) 10:56, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, well hopefully you can be able to see the European Tour website to keep track of the scores that way. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 11:34, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
He's 11 under through sixteen holes. So, he needs to play 1 under par over the last two holes, to get the 59. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 11:39, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Some little clips on twitter. Birdied 17. Nigej (talk) 12:11, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes! I was nervous about that birdie try, but he got it. And at the last, he nipped the edge of the hole for a 58 but it didn't go. But, he did make the next putt for par, and got the 59. Well done! Johnsmith2116 (talk) 12:23, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ryder Cup

Best of luck to Europe. The USA team hasn't won on European soil in twenty five years. Personally I'm hoping they will do it this time, as you might imagine. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 06:09, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Could go either way, it seems to me. Americans generally better but Europe has the home advantage. Back to my country retreat, so can't edit for a while. New roof being put on as I write this. Nigej (talk) 06:50, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Hopefully you like the roof. See you here soon. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 06:51, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Europe is leading 8 to 3. Maybe the USA can salvage this one last morning match. Currently, Spieth and Thomas are 1 up in their match, through 14 holes. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 11:11, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
8-4 is a good lead. Bookmakers have Europe as about 80% chance of winning now. USA+Tie at 20%. Plenty to play for. No sign of Mickelson today. Nigej (talk) 12:04, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, here we go, time for the singles matches. Down four, the odds are against the USA. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 10:02, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Also, in the FIBA women's tournament, the USA plays Australia for the gold medal in basketball. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 10:04, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good win for Europe. Too much for the US to come back from. 10-6 is a good lead. Continues a long list of European successes in Europe. The wildcards turned out to be the difference between the teams. or maybe it was that the older Europeans performed well. Nigej (talk) 18:53, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. What can I say, it was a thrashing. After the USA lead 3 to 0 after the first three matches on Friday, Europe then went on win 17.5 of the remaining 25 points. Well, the USA will next year play the Presidents Cup, and they always do well in that. .... Currently, I'm watching the gold medal game of the FIBA (basketball) Women's World Cup. Team USA is playing Australia, and the USA is trying to successfully defend their championship. It's looking good so far. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:27, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, in golf, the PGA Tour will now be starting a new season, and it's always fun to look forward to that. And the European Tour is on to Scotland for the Dunhill, which will have some big names. ... Personally, I was hoping that professional golf (PGA or European) would use the Olympic course in Rio de Janeiro for an official tournament. Who knows, maybe one day they will. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:33, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

2018 Summer Youth Olympics

Do you happen to know if you will have any TV coverage of these Games over there? Golf is included in the games, in case you didn't already know. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 00:16, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can't find anything. Very low profile. May be something online. Nigej (talk) 05:43, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Hopefully things are okay there. How's the situation with the editing? Also, have you been able to see the International Crown and the Dunhill event? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 11:03, 5 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

And the Safeway event. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 11:04, 5 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can't edit here, only with a mobile using the phone signal. None of the above events, only the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship which is at the half-way stage. Creating some Eisenhower Trophy pages, ready to add at some future date. Nigej (talk) 12:53, 5 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Looking forward to seeing that page of yours. I myself have been working on something for the female golfers, but it's taking quite some time. So, I've been working on it little bits here and there. It takes a long time because of having to go back and forth between a website and a Wikipedia page. I'm hoping to have it ready before November. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 14:15, 5 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Update, I have finished that thing I mentioned above. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 07:54, 20 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.14 21 October 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Nigej, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

Backlog

As of 21 October 2018, there are 3650 unreviewed articles and the backlog now stretches back 51 days.

Community Wishlist Proposal
Project updates
  • ORES predictions are now built-in to the feed. These automatically predict the class of an article as well as whether it may be spam, vandalism, or an attack page, and can be filtered by these criteria now allowing reviewers to better target articles that they prefer to review.
  • There are now tools being tested to automatically detect copyright violations in the feed. This detector may not be accurate all the time, though, so it shouldn't be relied on 100% and will only start working on new revisions to pages, not older pages in the backlog.

How are you?

How's it going these days? I had not seen an edit from you in three weeks. I went to the HSBC page to edit it, and I found you had already done it. Did you get the issue fixed, or do you still have it? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 12:33, 27 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Back in civilisation so able to edit again. Other problem unresolved but with winter coming, only a wood burner and no hot water, we won't be spending much time in our country retreat/ruin for the next few months. Nigej (talk) 12:39, 27 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for fixing my mistake on the WGC HSBC Champions page, I simply wasn't thinking straight, it's very early in the morning here. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 08:13, 28 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open field this year has been reduced from 144 to 132. I assume it is because it is too difficult to get 144 players all the way through each day with enough daylight to work with. It's early November. They tried it last year, and they likely realized that it was a bad idea. Early November, in the USA, simply doesn't allow for enough daylight for a field any larger than 132. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 12:53, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

At least not on one course. The RSM Classic uses two courses. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 12:57, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Probably true. Always was a problem for these end of year events, especially with the modern slow play. Anyway 132 seems like a large number. Personally I'd be happy to see smaller fields generally (except for the majors).Nigej (talk) 13:01, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well also, it seems they made up the difference with Americans. There are twelve fewer Americans this year, which is the exact difference in the field overall. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 14:30, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
They ran out of daylight on the first day, even with the reduced field. There were still four groups on the course when play was called for the day. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 17:28, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Rolex Paris Masters

I meant to ask, are you watching this tennis tournament? And is it on TV there? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:22, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No, not on my TV here. Used to be on the BBC but now Sky Sports (like nearly everything). Plenty of snooker on eurosport for me. Nigej (talk) 20:18, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.15 16 November 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Nigej,

Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
  • Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Nigej. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

16 reds

I was stalking the page history for Mark Selby and thought you might like this --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 16:24, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I wasn't aware of it. Anyway the addition was confusing at best since it said that Steve James had done the previous one, in some sense. And the header called "16-red clearance maker" linked to "Breaks exceeding 147". The available data is just too vague I think. Nigej (talk) 16:32, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It certainly wasn't included in a good manner, no source, inaccurate etc. Might make for a good article: 16 red break? --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 17:06, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, a much better way to go. Nigej (talk) 17:28, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

European Tour website

I can't get the European Tour leaderboard to load, at the website. Maybe you can have better luck? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 05:09, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Seems ok for me. Nothing on the two events this week but they haven't started yet I think. Nigej (talk) 06:48, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The only part of the site that isn't working for me is the leaderboard. I can't tell if it is the site, or my computer. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 07:01, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Is it this weeks events or older ones too? Nigej (talk) 07:02, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It is doing it only for the two events this week, not the older ones. But this has never happened before. On the Tuesday before a tournament, the leaderboard usually loads okay. So, I don't know why this is happening. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 07:08, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2019/tournamentid=2019002/leaderboard/index.html#/leaderboard is blank for me, but that's what I'm expecting. Nigej (talk) 07:12, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well fortunately, it is back to normal now, the leaderboard is loaded fine. Funny though, the clock they are showing for Gold Coast time is only five hours ahead of my time, which of course is off by a mile. It is currently showing 17:47, but it should be showing 03:47. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 17:48, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Kurt Kitayama

It's nice to see our American win on the European Tour, isn't it? Now he should get some name recognition in the golf media. Ironically, we had another Asian American, David Lipsky, get his first win on the European Tour also, in 2014. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 17:57, 2 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Comes from nowhere. Outside the world top 1,000 at the start of the year. Needs an article, of course. Nigej (talk) 18:04, 2 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Someones added him to Wikipedia:Requested articles/Sports#Golf. Nigej (talk) 18:07, 2 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for repairing that technical problem on the Hero World Challenge page. How that ever happened and why it was never fixed, who knows. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 21:13, 2 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018

Hello Nigej,

Reviewer of the Year

This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.

Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.

See also the list of top 100 reviewers.

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Training video

Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

Coordinates

Do you know if there would be some sort of error if we try to put a second set of coordinates at the top of a page (meaning, putting something like this >"coord|-20.167|57.766|type:event|display=title" at the bottom of the editing window, below the first one, but of course it would be a 2nd set of coordinates)?
The reason I ask is because that MCB event now has two locations. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 11:27, 16 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly, I don't know the answer. When I was doing the Eisenhower Trophy pages recently, I left it out if there were 2 venues used. I'll look into it. Nigej (talk)
Seems that it's only intended for a single location when using the display=title form. You can use it twice but it puts the second on top of the first, which is no good. An alternative is to use display=inline and put them somewhere else, like the infobox, eg:

| location = [[Mauritius]] <small>{{coord|-20.167|57.766|type:event|display=inline}}</small><br>[[Seychelles]] <small>{{coord|-12.345|67.890|type:event|display=inline}}</small>

which looks ok to me, but whether it's approved of I don't know. Nigej (talk) 12:18, 16 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tournament of Champions

It's nearly time for this tournament. Will you be able to see a lot of coverage of it there? Coverage in central Europe will go until 4:00 AM, if you have a network that will show it that far into the night. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 14:38, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No. Nothing at all here. However, I'm heading back to Blighty very soon from my extended holiday. Nigej (talk) 14:51, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, well, hopefully there will be plenty of coverage on a network at that other location. The T.O.C. is always fun to watch. And after waiting 18 days for some golf, not a minute too soon! Johnsmith2116 (talk) 14:54, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have a feeling it'll be an interesting year, probably Tiger will dominate the news. Nigej (talk) 15:01, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know which network will be showing it? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 16:21, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jamaica Open New York Golf Tournament

While it certainly maybe true that there are "many pro-ams held each week", however, those events could not say that they were attended by both current Jamaican Prime Minister (Andrew Holness) and by current United States Congressman Yvette Clarke. I will add media today showing this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cmodeste (talkcontribs) 13:48, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Australian Amateur

Hi this is pipamidalton. Thank you for reverting my edits. I thought they were not allowed because they contained dead links. I feel awful thinking I improved the article. I apologize for them. Still a newbie but appreciate your correction and clarification.Pipamidalton (talk) 08:33, 21 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Pipamidalton: "dead links" are different really. I know its tempting to remove red links to make the article look nicer but the general principle is to leave them in, unless you think there will never be or shouldn't be such an article. If there's a red link to something really odd or obscure, you should remove it. Anyway, keep up the good work. Wikipedia needs more editors. Nigej (talk) 08:56, 21 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reassurances but I know how tedious it is to clean up after. I complain a lot about nuisance and unconstructive edits made on other articles, especially after all the hard work one puts in to polish and clean up to keep it good and pretty, I hate to think I made your life harder a bit when reverting my errors.thanks for something inieagned today on Wikipedia style.Pipamidalton (talk) 09:05, 21 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Pipamidalton: Actually reverting a string of edits by one editor is quite easy so no harm done there. Nigej (talk) 09:07, 21 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks just the same. I learned something important today.Pipamidalton (talk) 09:16, 21 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Open sources

Hi Nigej. Think I have made what I would describe as a noob mistake with one of my Open citation links. I thought it was from a book and that was the source originally used in the wiki article, but realised now that it was copying what was in wikipedia. So basically used a source which is itself sourced by wikipedia. I don't think any content I put together was wrong though. I looked back and you put together the history of the qualifying process and format that was listed in the main article (and I moved to its own separate article). Did you use a single source to do that or did you build up the information from the individual years articles (i.e. the newspaper sources from each year)? Thanks --Jopal22 (talk) 21:14, 23 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I built it up from individual years, mainly cos I couldn't find anything satisfactory. Not the best approach maybe but sometimes its the only way. I seem to remember finding some wrong information in one of the Open articles from the 1920s and then setting out to find the truth. Had some good fun with the Opens. eg 1911 was "The 1911 Open Championship was a golf competition held at the Royal St George's Golf Club. Harry Vardon won the competition." before me and others got started. Hopefully a little better now. Nigej (talk) 21:29, 23 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I thought you must have. It's a good list, hope you didn't mind me moving it to an article of its own. Bit of a learning experience for me, found quite often when I searched for something that I was second guessing whether it was all from wikipedia originally or a genuinely independent source.--Jopal22 (talk) 21:59, 23 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it is an interesting aspect of Wikipedia. Someone writes something unreferenced in Wikipedia, some lazy journalist copies it, someone else then references this in Wikipedia. Part of the reason I like to confirm details by checking with contemporary sources, where possible. Also, the organisers of events have an interest in demonstrating a continuity over the years to make the event look as important as possible sometimes at the expense of accuracy. Nigej (talk) 09:15, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Defamatory content

Please point it out to me 'cause I'm missing it. And jumping right to a final warning otherwise is overkill. What I see is an edit war over unsourced neutral content warranting a level one at best.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 12:44, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

One user has been pursuing a campaign against Lisa Thiel on Eggheads (TV series) for years, it seems. Often it takes the form of pretending that she is leaving imminently, hence the 2019 being added. Sometimes more abusive, see last edit to Make Me an Egghead. Mindless really. Nigej (talk) 13:05, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
A couple of early examples from 2015/2016: [1] [2]. For a while he gave up the abuse, simply adding an end year to Lisa Thiel's dates, eg [3] from 2016 (an example which his other distinguishing feature of changing "me an" to "mean"). [4] is an example from 2017. [5] shows a more recent example of the abuse. Nigej (talk) 17:20, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Welsh Alliance League seasons

I have been working on Welsh Alliance League and its seasons, having recently created the 2017–18 and 2018–19 seasons (while keeping 2018–19 up to date). I then wanted to go back to all the way to when the league started in the 1984–85 season. So I created league table templates from 1984–85 season to date. I was next going to work my way back through the seasons and create and update all seasons (using these league table templates in the articles). So to see 'Nomination for Deletion' come about feels unfair considering that I am currently working my way through. I'm sorry @Zackmann08: if I caused offence when I replied to you first about the nomination for deletion but it did throw me back. I understand that you don't want unused templates to exist but these templates will be used. I am just getting round to implementing them into the articles. If you look at my contributions you will see that I have made many contributions to the Welsh Alliance League, which is a mammoth task. I have enjoyed contributing to Wikipedia and would like to continue in doing so. Onshore (talk) 21:06, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Onshore: no one ever said you couldn't keep contributing... If you have an objection to the deletion, then discuss it at the TFD. That is what it is for... --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:17, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

FIBA Intercontinental Cup Finals Top Scorer

I saw your comment at Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2019_February_21#Template:FIBA_Intercontinental_Cup_Finals_Top_Scorer. I had tried to delete the content from FIBA Intercontinental Cup since there was no consensus to merge at the AfD, but then the editor restored it while tweaking the WP:OR that it was an award. At that point, I did not further pursue it as an WP:UNDUE content issue. I left open the possibility that this was somehow talked about in non-English sources, though I pretty much doubt it. The same editor has also created pages like EuroLeague Finals Top Scorer, ABA League Top Scorer, and Basketball Bundesliga Top Scorer. I think they believe that since a leading/top scorer is notable in some leagues, that a similiar stat list should be created for all leagues. At any rate, I would support removing it from FIBA Intercontinental Cup, barring any further evidence that it is notable.—Bagumba (talk) 10:08, 22 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Nigej,

News
Discussions of interest
  • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
  • {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
  • A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
  • There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
Reminders
  • NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
NPP Tools Report
  • Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.
  • copyvio-check – automatically checks the copyvio percentage of new pages in the background and displays this info with a link to the report in the 'info' panel of the Page curation toolbar.
  • The NPP flowchart now has clickable hyperlinks.

Ronnie O'Sullivan back to world number one as of tonight.

Hi after Ronnie won tonight's Tour Championship he has returned to World number one. How do you change it on Ronnie's Wikipedia page ?. Can you do it for me I don't know how to do it. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.167.160.56 (talk) 22:10, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The official list is not updated for a day or two, but I have updated our list anyway, hoping it's ok. Will confirm later. Nigej (talk) 08:30, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jamie Clarke Snooker player

HI can you remove RHYS from this players wiki homepage. He does not use the name Rhys. it was removed and someone changed it back again. what was the point. Do you know how to remove it please ?. DooksFoley147 (talk) 00:32, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not really sure what you mean. Do you want the article name Jamie Rhys Clarke changed? See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Snooker/Archive_8#Can_someone_remove_the_Rhys_from_Jamie_Clarke's_name_please. for a previous discussion. Nigej (talk) 07:14, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi yes I want the homepage renamed to just "Jamie Clarke" at the moment the page created is under "Jamie Rhys Clarke". He clearly does not go by this name. Can you remove the Rhys name from it please ?. Jamie Clarke (snooker player) is ok if required. Regards DooksFoley147 (talk) 11:32, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This would a WP:RM. The proposer would need to come up with a good reason for the change - there is "reason=..." parameter for this explanation. Just saying "reason=He does not use the name Rhys" might not be too convincing. He did use the name in the past. Nigej (talk) 11:50, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

He never used it and confirmed this in an interview actually ok DooksFoley147 (talk) 17:09, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If he never used I can't understand articles like this https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/wales/31512686 (from 2015) which says "and Jamie Rhys Clarke among the Welshmen who have also been knocked out.". Are you saying the BBC made up his middle name? Nigej (talk) 17:50, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe the BBC made a mistake including his middle name Nigej ?. 178.167.230.220 (talk) 20:43, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

it makes no sense what you are saying. Why do we call him Jamie Clarke in tournament articles but refer to him as Jamie Rhys Clarke on his homepage. it is just plain stupid. DooksFoley147 (talk) 17:12, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Plenty of situations where people have changed names during their careers, especially women. The name in event articles should be that used at the time of the event, but both names link to the same article. It is very common. Nigej (talk) 17:50, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Clarke never changed his name. he has clearly stated rhys was used incorrectly, people on here don't seem to get it DooksFoley147 (talk) 19:06, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It just doesn't make any sense. He was clearly known as Jamie Rhys Clarke early in his career, whatever he now says. http://www.rkgsnooker.com/player/player-profile/jamie-rhys-clarke/token-291 Nigej (talk) 19:26, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That is a mistake I am sure the player knows his own name in fairness. How do we change it ?. 178.167.230.220 (talk) 20:40, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Follow the process at Wikipedia:Requested_moves#Requesting_a_single_page_move; simply add the stuff to the bottom of his talk page. Nigej (talk) 20:51, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Paswordlol

Have you seen that user's Userpage? There is a negative comment about Matt Kuchar on there. I suppose that falls under freedom of speech, but it's not right. Plus, he even had a vadalistic edit turned back by one of the Wikipedia bots. Some people have too much time on their hands. I wish I had that much time. If I did, I wouldn't be so backed up this year on Wikipedia editing. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 13:23, 3 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Two man team Golf events

Hi I do editing for golf and I think that two man team event wins should be added to the team wins section and removed as individual wins on players wiki pages. A team win is a team win not an individual win. The same rule should apply to golf as it does in all other sports when this occurs. Your thoughts please ?. Regards 92.251.160.97 (talk) 13:28, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There's been many discussions about this in the past. My own view is that foursomes, fourballs and similar are not team events, they are just a different form of golf (like doubles in tennis) - covered by the rules of golf. Nigej (talk) 13:47, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Doubles in Tennis is regarded as Doubles titles and not Singles or individual wins. I am sorry but I do not agree four man or foursomes are team events as they are so called "Team Events". what is the process needed for adding these as team wins ?. 92.251.160.97 (talk) 23:42, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The first section is generally called "Professional wins" and includes wins in singles, foursomes and fourballs. The other section is "Team appearances" and lists events where a player has represented a team. Within this style, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans is regarded as a Professional win. The players do not represent anything in this event, it is simply a pairs event. I know is it referred to as a Team Event but it would clearly not be suitable for the Team Appearances section. You can start a discussion at WT:GOLF. Nigej (talk) 06:13, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

TV ratings for golf

Hi there, do you know a website that shows the TV viewership numbers for the programs aired in the UK? The Zurich Classic had bad numbers in the USA this past weekend, and I was wondering how it did over there. Are there any websites that show the TV ratings for the programs on British TV? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:54, 30 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There is an organisation called BARB but I don't think detailed information like golf viewing figures is available without paying. Nigej (talk) 19:06, 30 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay thanks Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:47, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

LET coverage

Do you guys have adequate coverage of the Ladies European Tour there? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 22:46, 3 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's covered (like almost all golf) on Sky: https://www.skysports.com/watch/golf-on-sky Live coverage but often not on main golf channel where it clashes with a mens event. Nigej (talk) 05:49, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay thanks, I could not help but wonder. Golf Channel is going to show same day coverage of the La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational here in the States, and it is rare that Golf Channel shows us same day coverage of the LET events. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 17:07, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Far from insulting...

... it is useful to our readers. Or perhaps I know nothing, after all 21 featured articles including half a dozen in sporting events (all of which include a brief background section, all of which have received strong community consensus as being beyond acceptable) is probably meaningless to the snooker project who, in totality, have precisely zero featured articles. I wonder why that is. The Rambling Man (talk) 12:22, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"not something I approve of"! The Rambling Man (talk) 20:45, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Watford vs. West Ham

Does your TV schedule show that this Watford vs West Ham game is scheduled for 3:00 PM British time on Sunday? Oddly enough, our Golf Channel is actually scheduled to show this game on Sunday, to the point that the times for the final round of the British Masters have apparently been moved up. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 08:32, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The match is definitely on Sunday at 3 pm local time. Last day of the premier league, all 10 matches being played at the same time. Not sure why they'd be showing a mid-table match when the interest is between Man City and Liverpool. No idea when the tee times are for the golf but would't clash on TV here since golf and soccer have different Sky channels. Nigej (talk) 08:44, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Well, like I was telling someone earlier, Sky used to be in the Fox family, but Sky is now in the NBC family, and the NBC family shows quite a bit of the Premier League here in the States. And NBC now owns Golf Channel, so, I suppose Golf Channel is under some strange obligation to show this Watford/West Ham match. Although there is a possibility that the TV schedule is wrong. I won't know until the time comes on Sunday morning. ...
I can say though that the coverage I watched this morning of the British Masters on Golf Channel was in fact a feed from Sky. It was not a production of Golf Channel itself. It definitely was the Sky feed, with Sky announcers and graphics. This is the first time that Golf Channel has done this. ...
And finally, I saw a big crowd at that tournament. It seems like it is getting the same amount of attention that the BMW PGA Championship has gotten. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:04, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Usually good crowds for British events. Of course this one's in Lancashire, where they're very keen on their golf, rather than the London area. Nigej (talk) 19:13, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I checked the tee times for the final round, and the last tee time is 9:50 (4:50 for me). So, I think this means they want to be finished early so they don't have to compete with all the footy. I'm going to try to be up early to see the finish. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:43, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's a very early time for the last group. Nigej (talk) 19:50, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. Well that won't be the only early tee time. The final round of the Regions Tradition will be seen here on a delay on Golf Channel, as the tee times have been moved up to avoid bad weather. The last tee time will go out at 9:00 AM Central time, 10:00 AM my time. Golf Channel's coverage of it begins at 12:00 PM, making the delay approximately 3 hours. ... And as I am typing this, the Byron Nelson on CBS got going only a few minutes ago due to weather, and they are 6 hours behind schedule today. Clearly they will not be able to finish the third round today. They are talking about making two cuts, with only 60 players finishing the 4th round so they can actually have four rounds while at the same time being able to get finished on Sunday, to avoid having a Monday finish right before the PGA Championship. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 20:12, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(Sunday) It looks like we might be in for a playoff. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 13:34, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No need for a playoff, the young Swede won. ... On the topic of football though, I now know why our Golf Channel is showing the West Ham/Watford game. It is because ten NBC related outlets are showing all the games today. This included the NBC broadcast network itself, eight of NBC's cable partners (including Golf Channel), and one website. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 14:14, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The Regions Tradition is stalled for the moment due to weather. So, if/when they get started later, maybe we will be able to see it live afterall, instead of on a tape delay. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 17:09, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ronnie O'Sullivan's Current Ranking is missing from his infobox !

Hello how are ?. Ronnie's current ranking is missing from his infobox page. I tried to edit it but I can only find "High Rank" in the infobox. there is no sign of current rankings in there. How do I edit the page to include this info please ?. Regards 178.167.211.161 (talk) 16:58, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's a separate file. It had a typo in it which I have corrected. Thanks for letting me know. Nigej (talk) 17:06, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Where is the file please so I know for future reference please ?. Regards 178.167.230.220 (talk) 18:07, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's in Template:Infobox snooker player/rankings Looks like it's semi-protected. Nigej (talk) 18:15, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How would I even go about finding that ?. 178.167.230.220 (talk) 18:24, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It has Jimmy at 79 but Jimmy has dropped off the tour, he has received a two year Invitational tour card starting with no money. So he really should be 128 in the world right ?. 178.167.230.220 (talk) 18:28, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The file is simply a copy of http://www.worldsnooker.com/rankings/ That says Jimmy is 79, so this file says he's 79. When http://www.worldsnooker.com/rankings/ gets changed we change this file. Nigej (talk) 18:34, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

you know my point world snooker are never up to speed. 178.167.230.220 (talk) 18:49, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

At some point before the first ranking event they change from the end-of-season rankings to the new pre-season rankings, but we don't know when that will be. You are right though that they often do this a rather disorganised way. We'll simply have to wait and see. Nigej (talk) 18:56, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Philip Scrutton Jug - Past Winners

Do you have a list of the previous winners of the Scrutton Jug? Thanks Allrightnow1970 (talk) 18:46, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry no. I've looked in the past but not found one. It would be nice to have a list. Nigej (talk) 18:57, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for disambiguating those names. Actually I had copy & pasted them from someone else who originally typed them, and it didn't occur to me to see if they needed disambiguated. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 14:50, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That's ok. No playoff in the golf, so that probably suited the TV companies. Nigej (talk) 14:53, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and also it meant that the British Masters playoff did not have to compete for an audience with the EPL. ... Speaking of that, since Golf Channel was under obligation to NBC to show that West Ham game, I don't know what would have happened to Golf Channel's coverage of the West Ham game if the British Masters had gone into a playoff. It's a good thing it didn't happen. Thanks to Marcus Kinhult's birdie putt for the win. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 17:14, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Good win for him. Thought he'd thrown it away with those two bogeys. Nigej (talk) 17:51, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sky Sports on the scene at the PGA Championship

I'm watching "Live From The PGA Championship" on Golf Channel, and this segment is soley with the personalities from Sky Sports, along with their Sky Sports microphones, doing "On The Range". As I mentioned previously, Sky is now in the NBC/Golf Channel family. And, because we get the Open Championship tournament coverage on Golf Channel and NBC, I don't doubt that we will see plenty of Sky when that time comes this summer. ... TNT and CBS give us approximately 28 hours of PGA Championship tournament coverage. And Golf Channel and NBC give us nearly 50 hours of Open Championship tournament coverage. Hopefully the fans in the UK can get as much tournament coverage on the networks in the UK. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:26, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello Nigej,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.

Curious

Hi there, I was wondering about the "−12" next to Koepka's name. I didn't notice any difference. Can you tell me how it was changed, because I can't see it? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 13:42, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Strictly speaking there's a difference between the minus sign (−) and the en dash (–). So −12 but May 16–19, 2019. Of course they look very similar. On my screen the en dash is lower down and slightly longer. Nigej (talk) 13:49, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay thanks for clarifying this. Well, all I did was copy & paste it from the second round grid. So, that means the second round one is incorrect also. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 13:52, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Seems ok now. Perhaps it was wrong when you copied it. Nigej (talk) 13:59, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, odd. No one else came in and edited anything in between myself last night and you today. So, either it magically fixed itself, or else it was correct from the beginning and the act of copying it makes it come out incorrectly. Sometimes these things are mysterious. European circuit in Golf

I noticed you have included this in Peter Thomson's page. There was no such thing as a European circuit. Is just a term you have created ? Regards 92.251.190.21 (talk) 13:15, 1 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

See: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=TfFRAwAAQBAJ&pg=PA72&lpg=PA72&dq=%22european+circuit%22+golf+1971&source=bl&ots=7YgS-0yGrQ&sig=ACfU3U2M7n01cQTZKj-w6YZdzmvHQbqcXw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwic96rLtMjiAhUP0uAKHeQ6Bo4Q6AEwCnoECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=%22european%20circuit%22%20golf%201971&f=false "Second, there was the formation of a European Circuit." This source seems to distinguish it from the British Circuit, so "British/European Circuit wins" would be better. Or just "European wins" might be simpler. Amanda Anisimova

Has American Amanda Anisimova gotten much conversation going over there? I am watching coverage on Tennis Channel (and later NBC) of the women's semifinal match, and she is leading 1 set to 0. The last American woman to win the French Open not named Williams was Capriati in 2001, and coincidentally Amanda was born in 2001. And her Wikipedia page got over 140,000 views yesterday. .. Also, looking forward to the big Federer/Nadal match.

Little coverage I think. Mostly focused on Konta. Not many people know anything about the other semi-finalists. Anyway I see that Konta and Anisimova have both lost. Nigej (talk) 11:23, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I was rooting for Konta. A British woman hasn't made it to the final of a major since the 1970's. Also of course I was rooting for Amanda, but she simply was overpowered by the Aussie Barty toward the end of the match. But Amanda is young and she will be back. It will be interesting to see what she does in a few weeks at Wimbledon, Konta too. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 08:40, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Who said the lead was meant to be brief ?

Have you seen the pages on Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods their leads are nearly a full page. Also it is not up to your discretion to decide if the youngest this or that is included. you do not own the rights to Wikipedia content. DooksFoley147 (talk) 17:35, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Compare Stephen Hendry: " His first world title in 1990, at the age of 21, made him the youngest-ever world champion, a record that he still holds." nice and clear. Ronnie O'Sullivan: " He won the 1993 UK Championship aged 17 years and 358 days, thus becoming the youngest ever winner of a ranking title. He is also the youngest winner of The Masters, winning the 1995 tournament at the age of 19 years and 69 days." excessive detail. Nigej (talk) 17:54, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

England/Norway

Best of luck to England against Norway in the Women's World Cup quarterfinals. If England wins, in the semifinals they would play the winner of the USA and the home team France. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 04:59, 26 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

And it will be the USA against England in the semifinals, on Tuesday. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 02:33, 29 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

But first, today Wimbledon begins. It is always one of my favorite tournaments to watch. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 09:59, 1 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. They run it very well. Difficult to see England beating the US tomorrow but you never know in sport. Nigej (talk) 10:04, 1 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, you never know. As far as Wimbledon though, the coverage here started less than 10 minutes ago. ESPN is giving us eleven hours of coverage today, 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM my time (11:00 AM to 10:00 PM in the UK.)
But I like the women's USA soccer team's chances better than I like the USA rugby men's team's chances. In late September, it will be time for the next rugby World Cup, and our USA team usually gets beaten soundly. I'm hoping for a single win by them. There isn't really much rugby talent developed here, and so our national rugby team is usually inferior to the other national teams.

New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019

Hello Nigej,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.

QUALITY of REVIEWING

Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.

Backlog

The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.

Move to draft

NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.

Notifying users

Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.

PERM

Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.

Other news

School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at New Page Review Coordinators - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

Some mixed questions

If you'll indulge me, I have three unrelated questions. First, do you know why the Irish Open would have one wave of tee times this year, when they had two waves last year? Second, do you know if our Independence Day parade that our president is putting on will be on television over there later today? And third, as far as the Gold Cup and the Copa America events, do you know if either one of those are being televised over there and whether anyone there has any interest in watching them? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 07:10, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No idea about the Irish Open. Perhaps because the 10th tee is nowhere near the clubhouse. Re: Independence Day, I suspect that it'll be a big story for the 24 hour news channels but probably not sufficient interest for separate programmes. Gold Cup and the Copa America are niche events over here. Perhaps more interest in the Africa Cup of Nations. Nigej (talk) 12:10, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 15:39, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I happened to find coverage of the Africa Cup on TV here. It's on Bein Sports, which has very low viewership, averaging only 4,000 viewers per day nationwide across the USA. Here is a chart of mine that I made to show the viewership of several networks: Cable television viewership Johnsmith2116 (talk) 06:52, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Konta

Konta has put Stephens out. Konta has to be considered one of the favorites to win Wimbledon. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 15:41, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Seems a streaky player so me. Top-10 at one time, then dropped down the rankings. Now on an up, so anything could happen. Nigej (talk) 16:28, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well also, Alison Riske has put of the number 1 player, Barty. It's getting interesting.

Golf and tennis majors

Have you ever noticed the lack of unique criteria used in the selection of the players in the tennis majors? I like tennis, but I noticed that the nationalities in the tennis majors is basically the same across the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open. But the golf majors obviously have unique criteria for each of them; there is a huge difference between the nationality distribution of the US Open golf and the Open Championship golf, easily proving that there is unique criteria used for each. So, if tennis uses the same criteria for all four majors, the only difference they have is the geographic location. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 12:10, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps golf is a little unusual in that the four majors each decide their own qualifying rules. I don't think they are quite as distinctive as they used to be though. The top x in the world rankings get in automatically and since one of them near always wins (31 in a row have been in the world top-50), they aren't quite so different as you might think. Of course, the tennis grand slams are distinctive in other ways (eg the surface) like the golf majors. Nigej (talk) 14:16, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
True, the surfaces are different. Somehow that slipped my mind even though it's something I've always known. And of course our US Open tennis tournament is coming up in a few weeks, it starts a week before Lobo(u)r Day, and finishes a week after. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 14:43, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Spam

Those links to outside websites (which may or may not be harmful to our computers) tend to get onto the pages of major golf tournaments. You might have noticed in each case, the username who is posting those links is never a regular user of Wikipedia. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 10:27, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That's right. Hopefully a warning message is enough to put this one off. Nigej (talk) 10:33, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I hope so, too. But then again, if more than one person is going to do that type of spam, there could be more spam on the way. I guess all we can do is remove it when we see it, and hopefully no one clicks on those links. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 11:27, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Caught another one. And this one had been blocked less than a month ago. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 10:56, 19 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A busy time

Wow, this week in golf we have a WGC (and an alternate event), a senior major, and a women's major. This means extra work filling in scores in Wikipedia. Then next week, we have another women's major to fill in. ... But I'm not complaining, better to have too much golf than not enough. Also I'm looking forward to seeing the Solheim Cup at GlenEagles in Scotland. What I can't understand is why the PGA Tour schedule is going to have the QBE Shootout and the Presidents Cup in the same week. Maybe they simply ran out of calendar. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 11:36, 22 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to be a busy time for me too. Weekend away and missed all the golf. Got home about 5 minutes are it was all over. Nigej (talk) 07:27, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to hear you missed it, but hopefully you liked whatever you were doing on the weekend. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 15:09, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also, in the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, Europe has increased its number of players in this event this year. All the other continents though have had decreased their numbers. 19 of the 63 players are European. 10 of them are English. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 22:02, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Well done, filling out the FedEx Cup page. That saves me the time today. Also, impressive that you did it all in one edit. I don't know if you had it prepared in advance and simply copied and pasted from a scrip you worked on, but still, well done. Each year, that page is one that requires quite a bit of work. ... Next summer, we will have the Olympic Golf pages to work on, and that is a ton of work. On the one Olympic golf page I worked on in 2016, I think I had over 100 edits there. It's nice when it can be worked on by several editors. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 13:59, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I used an external editor (Vim) for the basic work, cutting and pasting from the official site. Nigej (talk) 16:08, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay thanks. ... Also, I found the page I was talking about. Here are the statistics on it: https://xtools.wmflabs.org/articleinfo/en.wikipedia.org/Golf_at_the_2016_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men%27s_individual Johnsmith2116 (talk) 12:36, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

On an off topic, I am watching the Canadian Open tennis tournament, on Tennis Channel. This is one of the nine Masters events in tennis. Currently it is the Konta match I am watching, against Yastremska. And next week it is another Masters event in Cincinnati, Ohio (Ohio is my home state). If Konta were to win this tournament, it would give her good momentum going into the US Open in a few weeks. And by the way, this tournament is the only Masters series event in which the men and women play at two separate locations. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 15:37, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

On The Range

Here in the States, Golf Channel is showing the Sky feed of "On The Range". It's a 90 minute live special that they are showing each Wednesday before the playoffs. Hopefully they will continue to have this every week throughout the season, not only during these playoffs. We'll see. And later this afternoon, immediately after the finish of this show, Fox Sports 1 will have coverage of the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:54, 7 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

2019 FedEx Cup Playoffs

Hi, the reason I changed it back to "0" is because I didn't know if "E" might affect the sort when someone clicks on that as an option. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 06:45, 19 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You are right. I have changed the column to use nts/ntsh so it sorts ok now, I think. Nigej (talk) 06:56, 19 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

MLS

The English Premier League has a fan base here in the USA, as I have seen the TV ratings for it. It actually does a little better here than MLS does. But anyway, I was wondering, is MLS ever on TV in the UK? I can't see that it would be, but I could be wrong. Well, if it is, and if they show it live, this Sunday night at 3:30 AM UK time, the two Los Angeles teams play each other, maybe you can find it. ... I notice the AFL games on TV here in the middle of the night, every week. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 05:15, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there's much TV coverage, although it does get plenty of newspaper coverage when big name British players are involved (eg David Beckham, Wayne Rooney). Nigej (talk) 05:40, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) There is select coverage, but it's poor, and you have to seek it out. Shame really, there's a few good games a season worth watching live. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 07:52, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your input, Lee. And thank you, Nigej. Well, I'm looking forward to the US Open tennis tournament this coming Monday. And I'm certain the US Open has plenty of coverage in the UK. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 09:27, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The English Premier League television viewership appears to be thriving here in the USA. This past Saturday, the Liverpool/Tottenham game got 1,189,000 viewers around the USA. Even MLS (our own league) doesn't get that much viewership in the USA. I'd like to think that MLS gets decent viewership over there, but I'm guessing it doesn't, but that's okay. I'm guessing the EPL viewership is thriving all over the world. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 03:38, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help with an FAC?

Hi Nigej,

I hope you are well. I have an open WP:FAC at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/2019 Tour Championship/archive1 that is likely to be closed soon without more input. If you get time, feel free to comment. 07:54, 21 August 2019 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Well done, Lee Vilenski. I hope it works out for you. Cheers. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 09:22, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your comments, Nigej, I'll take a look in a bit! Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 10:56, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Nigej, I think I covered it all, would it be possible to add more comments, or support/oppose for me? Thanks for your help with this! Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 13:08, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Walker Cup

I would have helped on the 2019 Walker Cup page, but for some reason it is not on TV here in the States. All we have is a 1 hour highlight show of it on Golf Channel tonight at 11:00 PM. This is frustrating not being able to see it. I'm not suggesting that 10 million people would watch it on TV here stateside, but I'm sure a few hundred thousand (such as myself) across the USA would like to be able to see it. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 12:15, 8 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

And I see Cole Hammer is in it. I'd like to see his singles match, but can't. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 12:18, 8 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I found the online leaderboard. Very irritating that it is not on TV here. We have wall to wall golf coverage on TV any other time (even the Asia Pacific Amateur), but for some reason we do not get to see the Walker. Hmm, go figure. It's not over yet, but the USA has clinched. I'm geared up to watch that men's US Open tennis final later today, and looking forward later in the week to the new PGA Tour season. And personally, I was glad to see the Canadian girl win the women's US Open yesterday. She was quite impressive. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 16:52, 8 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Update on the tennis. Here in the States, the US Open men's championship match got 2,700,000 viewers, which is 700,000 more than last year. And the women's championship match got 3,200,000 viewers, which is 200,000 more than last year. So, an improvement for each of them. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 17:55, 10 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019

Hello Nigej,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

2019 Solheim Cup

I went to push "publish changes" on that page, to load the afternoon matches in, and it turns out that you beat me by a few seconds. Well done. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 11:35, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Update: Europe current has more match leads than the USA does, as of 2:00 PM UK time. Europe could take the Cup back. Still a long way to go, though.

Seeking FA review comments for 2019 World Snooker Championship

Hello and thank you for reviewing the 2019 Tour Championship article for FA. Would you be interested in doing the same for the 2019 World Snooker Championship? You might not have noticed that Lee put it on the project page last week. As I did a lot of work on the article before it was nominated, I can't take part in the review and I'm therefore a co-nominator for this one. Any comments/criticisms/suggestions/queries would be most welcome, if you have time to take a look. Thank you! Rodney Baggins (talk) 09:51, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Happy to do that. Nigej (talk) 11:15, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

European Tour website

Hi there, I was wondering if you too are having trouble getting the website to work properly? I can't get anything to load on there with their new layout. It's mostly useless to me at the moment. Is it any better for you? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 17:47, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Haven't really used it too much to know but it seems ok for simple things. Just hoping its better than the attempt they made a year or two back. Nigej (talk) 18:12, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well hopefully something changes. I can't get anything on it to work. Maybe it's not compatible with my computer. I was hoping to find a button to change it back to the way it was. I can't find a leaderboard or anything. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:18, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Seems to basically work for me. Not sure what your problem might be. Nigej (talk) 18:20, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
And yes I remember when they had changed it initially. I was relieved when they had changed it back. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:26, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nigej, sorry to bother you once again! I have a new FAC at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/1985 World Snooker Championship/archive1 open, and as always I appreciate your comments.

I'll try my best to make this one my last for a while! Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 18:27, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

European circuit wins for Peter Townsend

Are we sure the Coca-Cola Young Professionals' Championship and Walworth Aloyco Tournament can be categorized as European circuit wins? With the Coca-Cola tournament it was limited to pro golfers under the age of 25 - not a lot. Also - and more importantly - it was not added to the European Tour schedule during its inaugural 1972 season (or any subsequent year). Lastly, Peter Oosterhuis' win is not placed under his "European circuit" label.

Secondly, I know nothing of the importance of the Walworth Aloyco Tournament. There is no Wikipedia page for it and there are no citations for Townsend's win or previous tournaments. From what I can tell it was only held from 1969-71.

Oogglywoogly (talk) 00:29, 10 October 2019 (UTC)Oogglywoogly[reply]

I think this sort of thing is something of a black art. Probably the two could be hived off into the other wins section. There were a few of these age restricted events at the time and they got a fair amount of coverage. Some of the continental tournaments were not well covered by the British press but I did create an article on the Italian BP Open at one time. Will have a look at the Walworth Aloyco. Nigej (talk) 05:23, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Have added a ref for Townsend. Seems it was only held 1969 to 1971. Can't find a suitable reference for 1969 and 1970 but see 1969: https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results/1969-04-01/1969-04-30?basicsearch=walworth%20golf&somesearch=walworth%20golf&retrievecountrycounts=false 1970: see https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results/1970-04-01/1970-04-30?basicsearch=walworth%20golf&somesearch=walworth%20golf&retrievecountrycounts=false which confirms it was held each of these years in early April, the week after the Italian BP Open. Nigej (talk) 05:50, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Found the following: https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=wuxAAAAAIBAJ&sjid=VKcMAAAAIBAJ&pg=3861%2C898970 https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=IOJAAAAAIBAJ&sjid=FKcMAAAAIBAJ&pg=2657%2C852836 Almost enough for an article, although 1969 has only the barest details. Nigej (talk) 18:32, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Have now found that Alberto Croce won something with a very similar name in 1972. Nigej (talk) 19:09, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Oogglywoogly: I have found the following in a Dutch publication http://www.nga-earlygolf.nl/golfarchief/files/original/58e6005f9dcb96896c4327cffd031823.pdf (page 138) which talks about the fact that winners of continental opens were given an entry to the 1970 British PGA Matchplay Championship. Translating it says "will now also be invited twelve continental professionals from the first in the Open championships that will be played in the twelve months prior to July 30, namely: Portugal, Spain, France, the Netherlands, West Germany, Switzerland, Italy (the Walworth-Aloyco tournament) and Scandinavia ..." Seems the Walworth-Aloyco was regarded as the equivalent of the Italian Open that year (the Italian Open was not played from 1961 to 1970) which would make it a fairly important event that year. New Page Review newsletter November 2019

Hello Nigej,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 807 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:08, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Snooker Shoot Out 2011-2019

Hi Nigej how are you ?. i see you have removed the hyphen from the Shoot Out homepage which i agree with. can you remove the hyphen from the tournament pages that took place between 2011 to 2019 please ?.This would make it the same as the hompage. regards 31.200.168.241 (talk) 15:43, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That would probably be incorrect. If the event had a hyphen in it when it took place it should retain the hyphen, otherwise we'd be rewriting history. I'm not yet clear to me which events had a hyphen in them. Nigej (talk) 16:31, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
See WT:SNOOKER#"Shoot Out" or "Shoot-Out". Nigej (talk) 09:11, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

6 red world seniors

nigej can you explain to me why this event which is a variant event is colour coded like a normal 15 red seniors event ?. variant events like this and the main tour 6 reds event are always colour coded like all previous variants. this is nonsense. regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.251.199.24 (talk) 22:48, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Snooker Shoot Out is treated as any other ranking event. 6-red events can be treated similarly. Treating a 6 red seniors event as both variant and senior is just making the thing overly complex. Anyway its a very minor event anyway. As to the fact that variant events "are always colour coded" ..., we can simply change the previous seasons too. Nigej (talk) 22:57, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Shootout is a 15 red ranking event where century breaks and 147s count towards career totals. the 6 reds events cannot be treated similarly as they go to the variant events finals section. if you don't want two colours why can't you make it blue like the other 6 red variant played on the main tour ?.you say it is a minor event so why not use the variant colour being used for 10 years ? regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.251.199.24 (talk) 23:19, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Variant relates to "vary", ie they vary the rules: eg the shot clock, ball in hand for fouls, etc. So the Shoot Out is clearly a variant event. We should get rid of the VE in the table in my view. The fact that we've done something for the last 10 years is no good reason to keep going with that style, otherwise nothing could ever change. Nigej (talk) 08:32, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Okey, I can see that. Still I find it more logical to show prize money för each player. EEJB (talk) 21:36, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

1991 World Cup

Thanks for helping start the page up. But in my opinion, place is tied, but each player has his own score and his own prize money. This is in accordance with wiki way för golf results. I will soon try to get the page complete. EEJB (talk) 19:33, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at other articles you can see that we generally include separate scores for each player but have common fields for prize money: see eg 1966 Canada Cup or 1991 Masters Tournament#Final round. Nigej (talk) 21:19, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

ICL International

Hi. Are you sure about this addition [6], as lots of tournaments were called "international" at this time and the source doesn't mention ICL, plus other sources don't support the tournament ever being held at Houghton? 51.6.161.113 (talk) 14:51, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Not at all confident I would say. I did find this http://www.sunshinetour.info/profiles/profile.php?player=BAI001 (click on career highlights) This lists "ICL Transvaal International" in December 1976 (presumably the same event) which we are missing both in ICL International and in the Hugh Baiocchi article. Townsend's 1976 win was in January (https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=c5JAAAAAIBAJ&sjid=BaUMAAAAIBAJ&pg=1638%2C3110227) so this could plausibly be the ICL International. http://www.thegolfclub.co.za/hughbaiocchi.htm calls this event "Transvaal Open" which confuses the issue even more. The same article has him winning the 1974 ICL Transvaal Open which seems to be what we have as a Transvaal Open win at the end of 1973. Overall it seems to me possible that ICL sponsored the Transvaal Open in 1973/74 and at some point this turned into the ICL International. Combining the two events, we have Baiocchi (73/74), Baker (74/75), Townsend (75/76), Baiocchi (76/77), Player (77/78 see http://www.sunshinetour.info/profiles/profile.php?player=PLA004), Hayes (78/79) ... so exactly 1 event per season. Generally just more questions than answers I'm afraid. Nigej (talk) 16:38, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You could be right, in which case the two articles (Transvaal Open & ICL International) may need to be merged if some solid references can be found. I'd ignore thegolfclub.co.za though, as it's a verbatim copy of a previous version of the article here. 51.6.161.113 (talk) 17:34, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like the Transvaal Open was held at Houghton in Dec 73 [7], which fits with Baker winning the "International" there in Dec 74. And this [8] confirms Baiocchi as the defending champion in 74. 51.6.161.113 (talk) 18:17, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm struggling to get my brain around all this. Seems to be some loose terminology as to the precise tournament names. Nigej (talk) 18:50, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, same goes for tour/circuit names. Unfortunately most newspaper articles come from agency wire reports, which weren't overly concerned with such details! 51.6.161.113 (talk) 19:45, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The only thing I'm confident about is that Baiocchi should have another win in November 1986. More refs: https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/Digitised/Article/newnation19731224-1.2.47.3 http://www.nga-earlygolf.nl/golfarchief/files/original/3835dee9a2e5f426dab61750abdb139e.pdf (search ICL) "Three times Baiocchi. The 29-year-old South African Hugh Baiocchi has Dutch soil quite done. He triumphed in three consecutive tournaments. He won the ICL International Transvaal Open in Johannesburg with one stroke from Gary Player and Tienie Britz. To be score: 68-66-69-65 = 268, 12 below par. Fourth was 22-year-old amateur Gavin Levenson, who is on his way homecourse Kensington 10 below par was playing. In the following 72-hole strokeplay competition, the Holiday Inns International, Baiocchi went round in 15 under par: 69-65-70-69 = 273. Here he won in an extension on the fourth extra hole from Dale Hayes. Your international Open champion of the Netherlands 1975, Hugh Baiocchi, has spent the winter in South Africa in a fruitful way. In he even played three tournaments for Gary Player and Dale Hayes elusive. Finally our international won Open champion of 1975 on the Royal Salisbury Golf Club the Rhodesian Masters with a score of 67-72-66-69 = 274. Baiocchi, that last won the Scandinavian Open and ended up as 1 le on the Order of Merit in Europe, won in three weeks 9600 Rand, around 28,000 guilders," (google translate) Nigej (talk) 20:03, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Found this [9] which confirms Vin Baker's win as being the ICL Transvaal Open, so have made the corresponding changes to all articles concerned. Still no clearer as to whether the ICL International was a continuation of the Transvaal Open or a different tournament. 51.6.161.113 (talk) 11:41, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Have we resolved which article Baiocchi's win in December 1976 should go in? http://www.sunshinetour.info/profiles/profile.php?player=BAI001 says "ICL Transvaal International" and https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results/1976-12-01/1976-12-31?basicsearch=baiocchi%20kensington&exactsearch=false&retrievecountrycounts=false says "after yesterday's second round of the International golf tournament in Kensington, Johannesburg." so perhaps ICL International makes most sense. Nigej (talk) 12:08, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, certainly seems that way – the ICL International for the 1976 win [10], and Transvaal Open for the 1973 win [11]. 51.6.161.113 (talk) 13:39, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Matt Kuchar

I am watching Golf Channel's coverage of the final round of the Singapore Open, and Kuchar is on the 16th hole. Apparently, Golf Channel's coverage is on a 1 hour delay. I am guessing that the tee times were moved up to avoid bad weather. But, whenever that happens, Golf channel is not nice enough to move up the time they show the action, they simply shho the coverage on a delay. I see that Kuchar won, which spoils the ending. I hope at least you guys in Europe got to see the coverage live. Here, Golf Channel had no excuse not to show it live, because in the middle of the night, all they were doing was showing a repeat of something from earlier anyway. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 08:11, 19 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Must be quite a bit delayed. Got the scores from https://www.flashscore.com/golf/ some time ago. Nigej (talk) 08:18, 19 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, okay. What about TV coverage? Was it on TV there? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 08:30, 19 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No coverage on Skysports Golf https://www.skysports.com/watch/tv-guide

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello Nigej,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Louis Oosthuizen

He is shown as withdrawn from the Players, but I am not sure if he teed off or not. Do you think we should leave the count at 144 players on the 2020 Players page? Or do you think we should take one of the South African numbers out and lower the tally to 143? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 16:57, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It seems from https://www.pgatour.com/competition/2020/the-players-championship/leaderboard.html that he played 7 holes, so he would count as a WD and the total should be left as 144. Nigej (talk) 17:04, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. But, dummy me, I hadn't thought to click on his name when I was at the site earlier. If I had, I would have already known what happened. It's easy forget that we can click on their name and check their scorecard. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 17:09, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I had or have a PGA Tour Media Guide (I have twice moved since this edit[12] that lists the Caracas Open as a win for Besselink. (We know the PGA Tour records are full of mistakes. George Archer's record for putts in a 1980 tournament has changed over the years. Media reports at the time say 94[13], in 1989 it was reported as 94 too[14] but the last time I looked the PGA Tour has it as 95. Then there is the missing Billy Casper wins and playoff loss[15]. I think my point is made about the Tour and their crappy recordkeeping) It is actually a IC in the article till you and one other editor changed the totals and one of my pet peeves[16] around here is the changing of something[17] that has a reference on it. I'd add the win into Besselink's box but I don't have the scores. Would you please do it? Thanks....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 20:07, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've changed it. I'm not 100% convinced really, https://www.pgatour.com/players/player.01084.al-besselink.html has just 1 win in 1957 not 2 and a total of 4. Official prize money is given there as $13,041 which is confirmed by newspaper reports at the end of 1957. Unclear whether this includes the $4,000 he got for winning in Caracas. He won $2,800 for winning the Kansas City Open, so perhaps would struggle to have got $13,041 without the $4,000. Nigej (talk) 21:16, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A kitten for you!

I apologize if I sounded harsh in my talk page post yesterday. You do good work on golf related articles.

Pavit Tangkamolprasert

Hi there, I have seen that you have created a lot of pages for golfers etc. Would you be interested (if you wanted to and had the time), in making a page for the young Thai golfer Pavit Tangkamolprasert. I believe he has already won twice on the Asian Tour. Many thanks. Jimmymci234 (talk) 12:41, 28 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can do, but may be a few days. Special:WhatLinksHere/Pavit Tangkamolprasert seems to have plenty of links. Nigej (talk) 13:34, 28 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. Jimmymci234 (talk) 14:28, 28 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jimmymci234: Changed my mind. Created something. Very stubby but added some references which should stop in being deleted. Nigej (talk) 18:02, 28 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Good stuff, thanks for that, appreciate it. Jimmymci234 (talk) 20:41, 28 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Amateur British tournaments

Has there been any word on the status of events such as the Amateur Championship? With the Open Championship being cancelled, I imagine the amateur events would be also cancelled, or at least postponed. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 21:31, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Congress of Oppressed Nations

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Treaty_of_Trianon#Congress_of_Oppressed_Nations

Who were the real Opressed nations or people? Those who lived in such countries whose legal system did not even recognize minority rights. Just some example: Welsh, Irish, Scottish in Britain, the Occitan, Catalan, Corsican, Alsatian, West Flemish, Lorraine Franconian, Gallo, Picard or Ch’timi and Arpitan, who were in super majority before the mid 19th century in France. (forced francisation of Paris) OR we can countinue the list of non-white Biritsh and French colonies, where the people lived without any civil rights.--Liltender (talk) 19:29, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
