Revision as of 04:29, 28 February 2008

This is a list of the 795[1] Democratic National Committee superdelegates, also known as unpledged delegates, who will vote in the 2008 Democratic National Convention as part of the 2008 Democratic Party presidential primaries.

Composition

The Democratic Party’s official rules do not use the term "superdelegate." The informally called superdelegates are two groups of delegates that are not elected through primaries or caucuses, but represent important personalities of the Democratic party. Following counts do not include delegates from Florida and Michigan which will not be seated to the nomination due to the violating of the party rules.

Unpledged Party Leaders and Elected Officials

The formal description (in Rule 9.A) is "Unpledged Party Leaders and Elected Officials".[2]

At the present time the total is 719 votes. These numbers can slightly change (for instance with new Representatives election).

Unpledged PLEO don't have to be confused with Pledged PLEO, which are regularly part of the elected through primaries and caucuses delegates.

Unpledged Add-ons

76 Add-On Delegates[3]. Many of them have not been nominated yet.

Totals

The following are the totals according to this list. Other organizations[4] have reported higher numbers based on pledged or expected support.

Candidate Total Votes Florida and Michigan (unseated) Including
MI and FL
Hillary Clinton 241 14 255
Barack Obama 186 5 191
Uncommitted 287 28 315
Unassigned 81 6 87
Totals 795 53 848

Notes:

  • Michigan and Florida delegates may not be seated at the convention and their votes may not count towards the nomination.
  • Democrats Abroad superdelegates only count for 1/2 vote.
  • "Unassigned" are add-ons delegate votes not yet assigned and vacant delegates.

Totals by group

Candidate Unpledged PLEO Add-ons³
Distinguished Party Leaders¹² Governors Senators Representatives DNC Members
Hillary Clinton 11 10 12 72 136 0
Barack Obama 4 11 14 68 88 1
Uncommitted 5 10 22 80 169 1
Unassigned 0 0 0 0 7 74
Totals 20 31 48 220 400 76

¹Includes former Presidents, former Vice Presidents, former House and Senate Leaders, and former Party Chairs. The DNC has credentialed 23 DPL's.
²For purposes of this list, Gov. Ed Rendell (PA) is counted among Governors and Sens. Byrd (WV) and Dodd (CT) are counted among Senators.
³DC's Statehood Representative Mike Panetta is an Add-on delegate.

Details

The following tables include every single delegate alphabetically sorted; vacant seats are listed at the end. To re-sort these tables, click on the double-arrow symbol at the top of a column.

Seated superdelegates

January 20th, 2007 is the date Senator Hilary Clinton opened her exploratory committee for the Presidential Democratic nominee and is thus considered the first date that a superdelegate can endorse her.
February 10th, 2007 is the date Senator Barack Obama announced his candidacy for the Presidential Democratic nominee and is thus considered the first date that a superdelegate can endorse him.
