Duncan Hunter presidential campaign, 2008

Please read this article instead of just mindlessly writing, "What is so unusual about that?" Anybody in politics would see Duncan Hunter running fifth in the Republican race below only the four first tier candidates is unusual. Most thought his campaign was a joke but now he is getting endorsements from Chuck Yeager and Ann Coulter it is very unusual and very interesting. DYK comments

No offense, but is a rebuttal to my argument to your "quip" to my DYK nod too much to ask? I do have a right to at least get that much from my fellow peers. As is, your silence only shows that you don't really care about DYK at best, and this is my latest venture into DYK since June 5th. Imagine if I was a newbie contributor to DYK. I'm sorry for taking so long to respond. I'm on vacation in Portugal only have access to the internet ocasionally. I'm assuming you're referring to the Mathman nomination. The reason I did not respond to your rebuttal is that I thought the decision whether or not this entry should be used was borderline. On the one hand, you're right, "making it five-fold does not equate to adding more words alone". On the other hand, DYK has to draw the line somewhere. The people involved in DYK decided to make it a rule that expansions have to be at least fivefold (in words). If we don't enforce this rule, it's meaningless and anyone can claim that their expansion can't be counted in words alone. I could not decide which way to go, therefore I decided not to respond and let the admin updating DYK decide whether your nomination should qualify.--Carabinieri 21:07, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

Re: Grassy balds (now Appalachian balds)

I removed the image from this DYK which you added to the update template; the image is no longer in the article, and was removed with the edit summary "new images showing actual balds" suggesting that the original image was in error. I note you added an image to the hook I'd previously added to DYK. The reason I didn't add the image was that I was unsure of its precise copyright status. In particular, the rationale for use of the photograph states that the image was taken in the US, yet it is sourced from a French website, which seems to give no source information. Victoria Cross for New Zealand

Just to let you know that i have responded to your comment on the Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Victoria Cross for New Zealand. The article goes into detail on the metal used in the original VC because the same metal is used for the VC for NZ. I therefore think that it is perfectly reasonable for this article to talk about it. (The only separate award that is not made out of the original metal is the Victoria Cross (Canada) and this info is not included on that page.) Wow, you've done a ton of work on this article. It looks great. I noticed that you took the {{organized labour portal}} tag off the article for WP:ASR. I guess it's pretty easy to see that I don't agree (as I'm the one who added most of the tags to labour articles!) But I don't want to fight about it... I'm all for figuring out what the right thing to do is - so I asked the question at Wikipedia talk:Avoid self-references#Portals to get the ball rolling. I wanted to let you know, because, as I said, I'm not really trying to push my point here, I just want to know how we should resolve this. FA review for Alan Kippax

Thanks for your review. You seem to misunderstand a convention used in commonwealth English; when writing about a cricket season that occurs in the southern hemisphere, it is common usage to say "in 1925-26...". Refer to WP:Cricket and you will see what I mean. As for the issue of POV, these are all quotes from people who saw the man play and are fully referenced. If you follow your reasoning to its logical conclusion, then any description of any person using adjectives becomes POV. Therefore, how are we to write biography? DYK generally only uses facts from articles that are not stubs, i.e. have at least 1,500 characters of prose (not lists, references, templates, infoboxes, etc.), so I'm afraid that article is currently not eligible. I was going by Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Public domain, which says:

• {{PD-art-US}} — for images of 2-D (flat) works of art published in the United States prior to 1923.

I don't know if this was actually published before 1923 in the US, as it was published in Germany originally. However, prompted by your post, I have now discovered for the first time {{PD-US-1923-abroad}}, which says:

This image is in the public domain in the United States because it was first published outside the United States prior to January 1, 1923. Other jurisdictions have other rules, and this image might not be in the public domain outside the United States and should not be transferred to Wikimedia Commons unless it can be verified to be in the public domain in its country of first publication. Also note that this image may not be in the public domain in the 9th Federal Court District if it was published after July 1, 1909.

Even so, I understand images shouldn't be uploaded under such a permit, unless the image is also out of copyright in the country where the uploader resides — and it would seem possibly in the 9th Federal Court District also. Is that California? If so, it's OK for wiki servers in Florida then.

Since I wrote the above, some further investigation has revealed the text on {{PD-art-US}} just says published before 1923, not published in US before 1923. I have amended the description on Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Public domain to reflect this and left a note on the talk page there, so it looks as though it can be used after all, at least by those uploading from the US (apart from 9th Fed maybe) and other countries where the same time period applies. It seems to make {{PD-US-1923-abroad}} redundant.

I have changed the template on Image:Bleyl-Poster.jpg, as you suggested.

When entries are five days old, they are always moved to the "expired noms". Once there, they may still be used, but they aren't always. I am afraid you misunderstood the situation (based on your comment here). Tymek explained the references on the talk page; that Irpen chose to get offended by perhaps ill-chosen adjective and turn the discussion into a civility one doesn't change the fact that the sources seem not to contradict WP:RS. You'll note that the article is stable (no content issues were raised but one which I hope I have addressed with my recent edit there). You are right that Tymek could (and should) have behaved better in answering Irpen's query. But it's not the first DYK's of Tymek's that Irpen took a disliking too (due to each side POV in EE affairs, as you noted), and a good way to derail DYK is to create a discussion on DYK page to discourage DYK admins from selecting that article. As you have noted, the questions have been answered; the sources are generally reliable, there are no questions of neutrality or notability or such - yet the chance of the article being DYKed has been lowered. I think such behavior is unfair, particularly when experienced users use their knowledge of wikirules and places like DYK to target work of new users, and thus Tymek's irritation with having his articles targeted this way is understandable - but yes, it does not make his attitude excusable. In the future, I'd recommend that you should not hesitate to warn Tymek that he should be more civil and answer questions directly and in detail - but also warn other users that IDONTLIKEIT attitude should not be displayed on DYKs. That's, of course, is my take on it - but as a contributor of 140+ DYKs I have gained some insight into how the system works, and what I see here is unfortunately not 'good intentions all around'.-- _{Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk}  22:33, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

There are so many pages were Piotrus chooses to continue his smearing of myself, that I am merely lucky to notice this as Carabiniery and myself interacted in the past and his page is on my watchlist. So, now I am accused in an attempt to deliberately derail a DYK through wikilawyering becaise IDONTLIKE something. That's just a bunch of nonsense while not the first bunch I am getting from Piotrus. I repeatedly said that I liked the article. All I wanted is some confirmation on the source's credentials because when the article was announced at DYK suggestion page, the "sources" section was merely a list of urls.[3] I made some noncontroversial edits while waiting for this and all was well except Tymek's offensive tone, something I am used to receiving from Piotrus' friends who gives Barnstars[4] and unblocks[5] editors who offend his opponents.

The sources' issue was finally settled but as if this was not enough, Piotrus' protege Molobo popped up with this edit strangely summed up as "minor issues". Piotrus revert wars[6] to keep it. Tymek picks up the revert warring torch from Piotrus[7] and soon after Digwuren, who faithfully follows me everywhere shows up.[8] And with this Piotrus calls the article "stable", slams some weird accusations, and compares me with his "friends". DYK Adam Lazarowicz

Just a few words about the unfortunate Adam Lazarowicz article. I was not going to nominate it to DYK, my intention was to create a little article about an unknown hero from my hometown of Debica. Irpen asked me to "to determine the credentials of the web pages". I did it, I called him a Soviet, he disliked it, so I apologized. He clearly was not satisfied with one source, stating in an ironic tone "I thought the last W.[arsaw] U.[prising] took place a while ago and there was no internet back then". This was a very stupid comment (yes, I mean it, Napoleon lived years ago, and yet you can find web pages about him and this is obvious), and unfortunately you failed to notice it. I really had (and still do not have) any idea what he really wanted. Based on what I see from my previous encounters with him, the tactics used by him is simple - to come up with some fabricated charges, and as a result - to discourage some editors from adding articles to Wikipedia. If my tone was offensive - I apologize, but instead of discouraging, Irpen should come up with help, since he was so interested in a person he had never heard of before. It is interesting that descriptions of battles with Nazi Germany are never regarded as disputed, but battles of anti-Communist resistance with Soviets are quite often marked as POV by some users (in this case - an anonymous one, with only two contributions, both about this battle). Check for Soviet/Russian sources etc., this battle really happened and I would really like to see NKVD sources about it. I am not saying the event did not take place. It is probably as real as Adam Lazarowicz whose existence and valor I never doubted. I helped with editing the latter but missed this one.

All I am saying that the article in its current form and shape is unencylopedic, that's all. No one talks falsifying. I am talking about presenting events in a proper and encyclopedic language, with facts clearly separated from judgments, latter being restricted and attributed, peacock terms avoided, etc. I would be also interested to know what KGB archives say about that. You and I are in the same position to find this out. It requires traveling to Moscow and applying for a one day (or longer) pass to conduct research. Many researchers, including the foreign ones, used that valuable source for their books. I don't know how much and what is classified or restricted but I saw quite thorough research on Stalinist crimes published by the scholars who conducted the research in the said archive. I hope that Polish scholars whose work you read tried to get this info. Are you sure they were rebuffed? I just want to make sure that editors who select DYK mainpage entries skim through the articles they insert, at least briefly. If this is what Carabinieri did and he merely disagrees with my judgment on the article as of the time it got featured I would accept that despite being surprised.

The article said (and still does now):

However, their joy was not shared by many people in the East. The Red Army defeated the Third Reich, but it did not bring freedom and independence. I have to admit I did not read the article. I only checked it for length, referencing, etc. I assumed the article would be ok because it was added to "next update" by another user and because in my experience Eastern Europe-related articles are among the most scrutinized, especially by you, so I was actually pretty surprised with this nomination not being challenged. I would not have added the article to DYK, had I read it. The language was - and actually still is - not neutral. There aren't any particular reasons for me to oppose this FAC, but I don't usually support FAC's unless I'm pretty sure there aren't any problems with it. Hi Carabinieri. I noticed Billy's question here and I took the liberty of fixing it myself by copying the contents of the page to a redirect page which had the correct name and listing the page with the wrong name for speedy deletion with the reason given. DYK

Looking through the history, that was a batch of credits left over from a previous template that hadn't been addressed all day. I just gave them out and went on making the next template. The job was set up in a rather bizarre set of updates to T:DYK/N by User:Archtransit. It appears that he/she set up the credits before working on the template, then realised that not all were going to fit, and neglected to return the removed articles to T:TDYK. The "update" begins here, credit for the article is added here, and the final template here. I'm afraid that the article never actually made it onto the front page. Isn't it a POV problem when the Salahuddin article is mostly cited to a newspaper column by the subject himself. The self-bio is used as a cite to say that Salahuddin was the best young sportsperson in Bangladesh, eg the 2nd para. Thanks, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 00:55, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

I wouldn't say that articles based on autobiographies are inherently POV, although the reliability of these sources and the extent to which they establish notability could be challenged. I think in this case there are some POV problems. I have removed the sentence you referred to and another phrase that didn't seem neutral to me. The article also desperately needs some copyediting. If you think the article is still not neutral enough, feel free to remove the entry from the main page. I've noticed you temporarily uploaded Image:Hans Holbein d. J. 031.jpg from the Wikimedia Commons because it will be on the tomorrow Main Page. The {{Painting}} that redirects to Template:Infobox Painting is different from commons:Template:Painting, and the {{Creator:Hans Holbein d. J.}} which doesn't exist here is supposed to be copied from commons:Creator:Hans Holbein d. J. (maybe the prefix Creator: only applies to namespace in the Wikimedia Commons). Template:Did you know/Next update

Looking at your proposed next update, I'm a little uneasy about so political a hook being included during an election campaign. Wikipedia is bound to be attacked for favouring the campaigns of people it chooses to included on the mainpage and we aren't going to be able to afford everyone equal time. I know its a little unfair to the editor who has worked hard on the Tom Tancredo presidential campaign, 2008 article, but I don't its an appropriate hook. WjBscribe 13:23, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
