Welcome to my talk page I use the name Cullen328 on Wikipedia, but you can call me "Jim" because that's my real first name. If you want to start a new conversation, please click "New section" or "Add topic" at the top of this page. I keep the old comments from July and August of 2009 that follow the "Contents" here, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome when I first started editing Wikipedia.

The importance of a friendly greeting

Hello and welcome to my talk page. If you want to start a new conversation, please click "New section" at the top of this page. I keep the comments that follow from July and August of 2009 readily visible, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome here on Wikipedia when I first started editing. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:38, 6 November 2011 (UTC

Please offer your thoughts

I would appreciate comments and suggestions on any contributions I make. I am learning.Cullen328 (talk) 03:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work on Jules Eichorn. He's been needing an article for a while.   Will Beback  talk  06:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If I may suggest, now that you've posted the Eichorn article the draft below might be deleted. It's your talk page to do with as you like, but it's a bit hard to edit around.
As for formatting and pictures, a good way to learn is to look around at other articles to see what you think looks best. It can be helpful to break up long blocks of text into subsections. Perhaps it'd be possible to split the biography into two or three eras. Other than that, the formatting is usually kept fairly plain. As for photos, it's easy to upload them: the trick is in finding photos with appropriate licensing. If you have any personal photos then those'd be fine. There are might be pictures of the peaks he did first ascents on in the Wikicommons. File:Cathedral Peak.png is a so-so pic of Eichorn Pinnacle.
As before, feel free to ask if you have any questions. There are several editors here who are mountaineers or just admirers of the Sierra, so you're in good company.   Will Beback  talk  21:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Many editors create "sandbox" pages for drafting articles. For example, User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox.   Will Beback  talk  00:17, 1 August 2009

Your climber biographies

Hey Jim, just wanted to say welcome and thanks for your contributions to the Sierra Nevada climbing history articles. You're filling a niche that's been missing here, I look forward to working with you. --Justin (talk) 11:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll second that. Nice work on Allen Steck and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know who you are planning to write up next but if your taking requests I think Peter Croft (climber) could really use a page. If you ever have any questions please ask. Thanks again for your great additions.--OMCV (talk) 02:25, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Justin and OMCV. I am beginning work on Tom Frost and Glen Dawson. Comments on Norman Clyde would be welcomed. I will defintely read up on Peter Croft, OMCV. I am still "learning the ropes" in Wikipedia, to use a climbing analogy, and have all sorts of things in mind. My biggest challenge right now is getting permission to use images. My next biggest challenge is hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney with my wife in ten days - she's never been above 12,000 feet except for the train ride up Pikes Peak. As she's 56 and developing arthritis in her toes, it will be an accomplishment if she (and I) complete the Class 1 feat. Jim Heaphy (talk) 02:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Debra and I made it to the summit of Mt. Whitney at 2:20 PM on Friday, September 11. Jim Heaphy (talk) 00:59, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request of Help on "Just the Facts" Tone

Hi Jim,

I am very new to Wikipedia. I got your feedback on the draft article located under PhoCoHaNoi. Thanks so much for your comments. I would greatly appreciate if you would spare some valuable time to highlight those parts from the draft that I need to pay close attentions to regarding the aspect that you raised. I know it would be a long shot to ask if you would even consider providing specific examples by directly editing them on the draft.

Lastly, I still do not know on how to submit the revision for review. I do not see any obvious buttons or pull-down menus from the Sandbox setting that would be able to allow to submit the article for review.

Thank you so much.

PhoCoHaNoi

Hello, PhoCoHaNoi. I am not going to edit the draft myself, because I want this to be a learning exercise for you. Here are a few examples of unacceptable wording:
  • "celebrating the 73-year history of outstanding men and women"
  • "pioneering contributions"
  • "sustained leadership and strategic vision"
  • "Exceptional services to innovation ecosystem"
  • "stimulating small business innovation, meeting the Air Force and DoD R&D needs, broadening participation in innovation and entrepreneurship, and boosting commercialization"
  • " So, as Dr. Pham looked back now, he brought systems-theoretic science and control engineering principles, together with teamwork and interdisciplinary to bear fruition in solving warfighter engineering problems, various areas of specific focus for increased activities in space control autonomy and space domain awareness."
It is not the job of a Wikipedia editor (you) to praise a person. Every trace of this non-neutral language must be removed. A Wikipedia article should never say "Person A is great!" Instead, it should say "Reliable source C reports that Expert B says that Person A is great", along with a reference to Reliable source C.
As for how to submit your draft, I will explain that when the draft complies with the neutral point of view. Cullen328 Let's discuss it

Sending Messages to Other Editors

Hi Jim. I will deeply appreciate anything that you can do to help. How can I find out about other editors and send them messages? I recently looked for an article about The Italian Coffee Company that I had read years ago. However, I could not find it. I believe that this article should be available. I am a new editor and I have a big learning curve ahead of me. Maybe you can post to my talk page. I am user Mojosa17. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Invitation to Local Wikimania Event in San Francisco this Friday

Hi!

Wikimania is happening and hopefully you're enjoying the sessions. While it's fairly last minute, you're warmly invited to participate in the local Wikimania-themed meetup in the Wikimedia Foundation office this Friday (tomorrow!). You will have to register in advance, but we would love to see more people from the WikiSalon community participate! For more information and registration, please check out meta:Wikimania 2022/San Francisco Meetup.

The event will involve hacking, teaching, learning, and celebrating and we'll have snacks. We will have the opportunity to watch live sessions at Wikimania together in the afternoon. The rest of the day we'll have opportunity to participate in the hackathon, and we may have some on-demand workshops/learning sessions.

In case we run out of space, it's first-come-first-serve so let us know soon! Hope to see you there.

Question from Marthahennessy (01:41, 19 February 2024)

Hello, there is an error on my Wikipedia page regarding my career as an occupational therapist. How do I give input to correct it?

Thank you, Martha Hennessy --Marthahennessy (talk) 01:41, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Marthahennessy. I see that you left a message at Talk:Martha Hennessy last July, but you did not make a formal edit request, which means that probably nobody saw your message. Also, you did not provide a reliable source verifying the information that you want changed. If you give me a reliable source, I will make the correction for you. If you can provide reliable sources about your life and career more broadly, the article can be improved and the maintenance tag can then be removed. Cullen328 (talk) 03:18, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I worked for 25 years as an occupational therapist in the public schools, home health care, subacute rehab, and the VA Medical Center in White river Jct. VT.
My source is myself and my work history. I moved around in my career, I didn't work at the VA for 30 years.
Martha Hennessy Marthahennessy (talk) 12:53, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Marthahennessy, Wikipedia requires references to reliable, independent published sources for these kind of details. Your recollections about your work career are probably accurate but are neither independent nor published. Cullen328 (talk) 17:57, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So what do I need to do?
Thank you,
Martha Marthahennessy (talk) 20:00, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Marthahennessy, I made a minor change in the wording. The alternative is to remove mention of your work as a occupational therapist entirely. Cullen328 (talk) 20:08, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thank you, occupational therapist. Marthahennessy (talk) 20:15, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Manormedia (03:07, 20 February 2024)

hello I'm really struggling to get a proper biography image to use for my article on Angelo Molinari the actor. most of the images ive uploaded to commons violate the copyright rules. I wanted to use his photograph from IMDb. How can I upload an image that has already been poosted withouth violating the wikipedia policies? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. --Manormedia (talk) 03:07, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Manormedia. You cannot use any non-free or copyright protected photo in any article about a living person. The vast majority of contemporary photos that you find online are copyright protected, so it is your obligation to prove that any given photo is not copyright protected. You could take a photo of Molinari himself, and freely license it. You could contact Molinari or his team, and ask them to upload a freely licensed photo. But you cannot use a random photo lacking a free license. Cullen328 (talk) 03:52, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. Thank you very much for this. I was getting very discouraged. If I am able to get him to pose for a photo how would I prove that it is my original work? Manormedia (talk) 03:55, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Manormedia, the Exif data generated by your phone or camera will be sufficient. So, do not publish the photo anywhere else and do not turn off the data logging of your camera or phone. Cullen328 (talk) 04:04, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay great thanks so much! Manormedia (talk) 04:08, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Likely LTA disruption at WP:ANI

There's ongoing disruption on WP:ANI by user that likely gamed their way to autoconfirmed right to get around semi-protection right after recent LTA disruption by non-confirmed user. Likely needs ECP on ANI. Stylez995 (talk) 07:41, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Where to ask about WP:PROTECT?

Hi. As you're a "mentor", I thought I'd ask... :)
Where's the correct place to ask about WP:PROTECT and related Wikipedia concepts?
Thanks. galenIgh 04:11, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, .galenIgh. "Ask about" is a bit vague. Wikipedia talk:Protection policy is the place for formal discussions about the policy. You can ask questions at the Teahouse or at the Help desk. Or, you can ask me a more specific question right here. Cullen328 (talk) 04:24, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the pointers. It has to do with a combination of ECP, ARBECR, and Talk pages. I found some recent discussion. Will do more reading, but I think WT:ARBCOM is the place. galenIgh 15:39, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Personal attacks directed against you on a user talk page

Hi!

Don't ask why I was snooping around the block log, there were no recent updates to the articles I was heavily editing.

Anyway, looks like IAmABigFarter is using strong curse words to 'get their point across', as well as bullying statements on their talk page against you, and presumably every other admin. I almost wonder if that's grounds for a talk page block too?

Nicole. Oh, she's elegantly clandestine... 07:24, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, ElegantlyClandestine. Useful "snooping" is just fine. Productive editors see something a bit odd, look into it, and address any disruption that they discover. I appreciate you letting me know about this. I have revoked the editor's talk page access, because they should be discussing how to get unblocked rather than throwing a temper tantrum. I glanced at your userpage and noticed that you are considerably younger than I am. Did you notice how boring and predictable and lacking in creativity that string of insults is? I can assure you from personal experience that I heard stupid insults just like that 60 years ago, and they had zero impact on me back then and zero impact now. Thank you, and keep up the good work. If you ever have any questions about editing, please feel free to ask. Cullen328 (talk) 07:59, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that - thick skin is absolutely useful in these times. I just don’t understand why some people lack the ability to communicate correctly. And, yeah. It’ll be a while when stuff like that is just going to be nothing for me. So far, *phobic remarks against me do not make me budge. But for other things? I have yet to work on that.
Gosh, now I wish my real grandpa’s still alive… for now, he resonates in you. <3
Nicole. Oh, she's elegantly clandestine... 08:46, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category

Hi Jim, Hope all's well with you.

I originally asked the following of another admin whom I knew worked on cats, but now I see she's blocked so I deleted my request and am turning to you. My issue is that I wanted to make a schoolteacher category for a particular school so I could put George Mallory in it, but I forgot to put the word School at the end of the category Teachers at Charterhouse a minute or so ago when I created it. As an admin, is that something you could do, i.e. change the name of the category to Teachers at Charterhouse School? Or do I need to go through a complex process of nominating it etc? Years ago, I'm sure one used to be able to do this as a humdrum ordinary editor but that facility seems to have disappeared. Thanks! Ericoides (talk) 10:07, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Ericoides. Nice to hear from you. To be frank, I rarely work with categories except to add them to articles. I suggest that you take this matter to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. Cullen328 (talk) 16:48, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, will do. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Regards, Ericoides (talk) 17:20, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Without piling on on his talk page, I don't see why one would ever need such an extension. Even off-Wikipedia. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 18:43, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The more I look at this, the more I am convinced of a few things. First, this person was not ignorant of what they were putting on their computer(s). Secondly, while I am not certain they are a neo-Nazi, I strongly suspect they are some kind of ethno-nationalist. This brief lived addition to their talk page says a lot to me. Third, it is quite obvious that this editor has been around. I have no idea who they were in their previous incarnation(s), but this is not a newbie. And I note they have just vanished. Hmmm...

I have never claimed to be a skilled sockpuppet detective, but I too doubt that this is a newbie. Cullen328 (talk) 04:10, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Newbie commenting on unblock requests

Hi, sorry to bug you but I can't seem to work out the right thing to do here - a new editor is wandering around leaving very negative comments on unblock requests: Special:Contributions/Al Boyer

It doesn't seem like it belongs on any particular board because it's just so....weird? If it needs to be reported somewhere, any guidance would be appreciated. My chronic pain + meds are making me very slow and I don't know what to do, but it seemed like something I should mention. Thanks for your time and I hope you're having a good day. @StartGrammarTime (talk page stalker) Reverted and blocked. It might be interesting to see their unblock request! Doug Weller talk 09:55, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, StartGrammarTime. I was asleep when this happened. Cullen328 (talk) 16:22, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Doug Weller and Cullen! I would ask for advice for if this happens again but it's such a weird thing to do...(and I hadn't even thought of how interesting their unblock request will be!) StartGrammarTime (talk) 01:52, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mcadorette (14:02, 20 March 2024)

Hello: I think I was last active here about 11 years ago when I tried an awful attempt at editing my high school's page. Are you still my assigned mentor? If so, I have some questions for you. If not, please point me in the right direction. Thanks, Mcadorette --Mcadorette (talk) 14:02, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mcadorette. You can ask me whatever you want about editing Wikipedia. Cullen328 (talk) 15:32, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
