Amarillo, Texas

No, it is my fault for using the word "Dude." I never thought it would consider an insult when I typed it. Thanks for the compliment for the Amarillo, Texas article. :-) The Amarillo article copied a lot of ideas from featured city articles such as Boston, Massachusetts and especially Ann Arbor, Michigan consider the population of that city is about the same as Amarillo's.

Oprah was mentioned in the Amarillo article until I spinned it off into a different article but now it seems some people wanted it merge it back. Oprah will be back in the main article but without the bullets/list sometime this week. --J. Nguyen 01:25, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]


Charles Whitman

I'm glad you like the changes, I'm going to add a Weapons List similar to the gear one I just put in as well. (I found the template for the sexy sidebar list on the Bath School disaster article, v. good article I read today because it's the featured one). There's a troll or two that pop up and complain about any changes to the Whitman article, but hopefully we've seen the last of them. As per your part, I know there exist quite a few "Before" photographs of Whitman as a normal man, honeymooning with his wife, etcetera. I'd love to see those incorporated into the article. Invitation to help me improve Tiger shark and Bull shark

I've noticed your outstanding work on some species of sharks. I don't know whether you have noticed the tremendous disparity in quality in respect to articles on individual shark species. Some articles like Oceanic Whitetip Shark (which both of us have worked on) and Great White Shark are top-drawer - examples of first-class effort by the Wikicommunity.

The two above-referenced articles are in great need of improvement. Bull shark, in particular, is pathetic. --Hokeman 18:12, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Yes I know, I have seen your 'cry' for help, I agree and will try to help. But I'm a slow worker :-)~, I actually do not like the Great White Shark article either, I do not like its organization, and I am planning to do something about it at some time. I tried to enhance a few of the shark articles a while a go and did a first cut of User:Stefan/Project_sharks, the start was mostly to get the basics in the most 'importaint' articles. But I got distracted with a boot and have spent my time doing other things, if you would like to update my project sharks be my guest. Vilma Ebsen

Apropos of my having added the categories to the article so quickly, I often monitor new page creations, mainly in order to nominate for speedy deletion such articles as are wholly unencyclopedic but also in order to try to save pages that might otherwise be considered for deletion (e.g., because they provide insufficient context or insufficient evidence of notability). In the case of the Ebsen article, you created a fine article (one is always so happy to find editors who compose articles prior to their creating them) and I thought I'd add the categories while I had the chance. Confederation Bridge

I can't take credit for that shot -- I found it at Wikimedia Commons when I was cleaning up the Prince Edward Island category there. You should consider uploading your photography to Commons (the PEI coverage is pretty sparse) if you don't mind licensing it under a free license. Request for help showing me how to do something

I was trying to figure out how to correctly alphabetize some of the names on the Category: Accidents and incidents in general aviation page. By way of illustration Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, J.P. Richardson and Richie Valens are showing up under "C", "J" and "R" respectively rather than the first letter of their last names. Hi, Hokeman. The way you do that is to put the name in the order you want it alphabetized after a pipe symbol (|) in the category. For example, in John Kerry's article, this appears: [[Category:1943 births|Kerry, John]]. That way, it is properly alphabetized under "K". Golf articles

I checked out your Jeff Sluman article like you suggested. I just tweaked the referencing a little. It is the convention in Wikipedia to call the notes section "References", and if there is a references section, it is best to show more information about each reference in that section than just its number. Incidentally, I added most of the tables of results in major championships that you will see in golfers' articles. If you are interested in doing any there is a blank proforma on my user page that you can copy and the easiest place to get the data is golfonline.com (see "golfstats", which is item 6 on the menu on the left of the site.) As it only has full PGA Championship results from 1958, I only do players who were born after about 1935, though I made an exception for Arnold Palmer. Hawkestone 16:22, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop changing the birthplace on the Burt Reynolds page. He was born in Waycross, Georgia not in Michigan. The first time you did it, I didn't say anything because years ago some tabloid – like the Weekly World News – did print a story years ago that he was born to alien parents in Lansing, Michigan or some idiotic thing like that.   • I don't like vandalism eiter, but please read my comments and web page links in the discussion page of the Burt Reynolds article. Have you read his 1994 autobiography??? In which he says he was born in Lansing, Michigan. There is also as many sites that say Lansing, like imdb.com movie website and others. There is genealogical evidence as well that his family is from Michigan. And I have not found any evidence at all, that he even lived in the state of Georgia at any time in his life. I don't understand why you still continue to change his birthplace from Lansing, Michigan to Waycross, Georgia. Are you from Georgia? I've sited my sources thoroughly. What are your sources? Other than websites, that have no sources themselves. I can find just as many that say Lansing too. I guess if people tell lies often enough, you hope others will believe them as truth.   • I wish you luck with getting a response to your e-mail to the burtreynolds.com web site. I tried the same, a little over two months ago, and never got a response. May I suggest that you go to your local library and see if they have a copy of his autobiography "My Life". If they don't have one, request one through an inter-library loan. This is what I did. It has a list of winners for each tournament, but is kind of low in the stats department. I've been searching for sites like this myself, so I'll let you know if I find any of interest. That's actually an excellent idea. One thing though, you can wikify the old tournaments, as I did with Dow Finsterwald. The Tucson Open is now the Chrysler Classic of Tucson, the Los Angeles Open is now the Nissan Open, etc. You can search around the articles I did on the PGA tournaments and see if any of them are what you're looking for. "International"

Good to see you are still creating golf articles, but please don't copy the PGA Tour's heading of "International". What is domestic and what is "international" depends on where you are and what nationality you are. The PGA Tour site is U.S. centric, but Wikipedia shouldn't be. Also it should be noted that the pgatour.com is not very reliable in this regard - Dudley Hart's international win took place in Georgia, USA. Osomec 15:48, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

J.C. Snead

If you are curious, what Charles did was to move the article J.C. Snead to J. C. Snead. When you move a page, a redirect is automatically created in place of the old article. Invitation vs. Invitational

I've seen many others on PGATour.com:

  • The idea for the Colonial National Invitation Golf Tournament was conceived in 1941 after the U.S. Open championship was held here. 1
  • The birth of the Colonial event, however, was delayed five years due to World War II. In the meantime, members planned to emulate the very best, the Masters Tournament, which had begun in 1934. Colonial even adopted part of that tournament's original name, the "Invitation Tournament." 2

Oceanic whitetip shark

The reason I removed it from the top list is because I followed what the scientists at the ISAF said. Under normal circumstances the Oceanic whitetip would be a bit less dangerous that the tiger, bull and great white, but you brought up a good point about the WII disasters. I have wanted to start a project with the purpose to improve our shark related articles for a long time, but never though we had enough people, now after all the nice collaboration on the Shark attack page I must take the chance of inviting you to try to start up a project sharks. Thanks for sharing your ideas with me. I wouldn't create a template of famous people from East Texas, as unintigrated text is not viewed favorably by reviewers of good and featured articles. I think adding a paragraph about music in the Culture sectioon which mentions Janis Jopilin would be better. Shark project

Stefan, I have been trying to send you a response for days and days; however, the AOL IP's that I have been on have been steadily blocked. I am ready to jump into the shark project, and have started doing some research for a page on the Galapagos shark. I will also review Oceanic whitetip shark as you asked. When I've been creating golfer stubs I've taken info from either the PGA tour or European PGA tour websites, plus whatever a google search uncovers, but this will be a lot trickier for defunct tournaments. I know the European Tour publishes an annual hard-back review of the year so I guess the PGA Tour does something similar. Good luck for your bookstore search. I think overall you're doing a great job with the articles, I just had a problem with some of the "golfer's best season was" because although you're probably correct in terms of wins and money, but maybe the golfer feels different for some reason. WikiProject Golf

This is a "newsletter" of sorts. It's designed to let you know whats going on with the WikiProject. Contact me, Grovermj, if there is anything i could improve, or if you would like to write the newsletter yourself, because i'm certainly not skilled and experienced at this. Call it a test run.
  • Well, it's been a month since the project has started, and 4 new articles have been made by editors in the project. They can be found here.
  • The template {{Wikiproject Golf}} has been added to a total of 794 articles. We are most probably more than half way there.
  • Badbilltucker has proposed "Wikipedia Week" starting on the 15th of January. Details can be found here.
  • We have 14 participants at present.
  • If you are in need of things to do, the To-Do list could be a good start.
  • At present, there are no featured articles related to golf, and only one Good article. This is Tiger Woods.
  • Discuss golf course notability and a possible featured article collaboration on the talk page.

mcauliffe

I appreciated some of the positive changes; however, i reverted because I felt some edits weren't w/in style manual and consistent. First, as I understand it, Wikipedia generally avoids over-wikilinking, esp. wikilinking every time a year is referenced. See the following:

"Wikipedia has articles on days of the year, years, decades, centuries and millennia. Link to one of these pages only if it is likely to deepen readers' understanding of a topic."

Also, you capitalized presidential, which I am sure should not be capitalized (unless it was the formal name of the committee, which it wasn't). See the following, which is the closest I could come:

Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(capital_letters)#Titles

Presidential would not be capitalized in any style manual that I know, but I would welcome to be proven wrong.

From my knowledge, reelection is the preferred word, without the hyphen. If you know otherwise, pls. let me know. Thanks!

Finally, I felt adding that Carter's presidential campaign was unsuccessful was an unnecessary addition. We all know Carter didn't win reelection. If you're going to add that, then why don't you add the adjective for all the other elections mentioned in the bio, including the successful ones? Carter only had one reelection campaign, so there would be no confusion. This isn't an article about Jimmy Carter; so there is no reason to clarify whether it was successful or not. People who don't know that would not likely be reading McAuliffe bio in the first place, and besides if they want to know they can click the link to Carter. By adding it, it seems as if you're implying McAuliffe was a reason Carter lost, which I am sure you didn't mean to imply (let me know if you did mean to imply that). If you add that, then why not add the election result for that year, and other analysis? Let's leave the adjective out and be consistent, is my suggestion. political realignment

not sure how deep your interest/expertise in politics runs, but there is an article re political realignment i thought was a bit tortuous. if this is up your alley, would welcome your comments sometime -- does the article merit an entry at all? If so, should it just be short and simple, explaining the concept and letting others argue about the specifics and merits? Does it just need some better citations? Robert Frost's home in Florida

When I saw your edit I thought to revert it but after further cogitation I decided to simplify the sentence. I can't find the street address of Pencil Pines but Muir clearly states that it was in Coconut Grove. Actually, at that time it was outside the legal boundary of the Grove, but the residents said they lived in the Grove. I'm guessing this was because they were served by the Coconut Grove post office. Anyway, the homes near Pencil Pines were actually in an unincorpoated part of the county that later was absorbed by the city of South Miami. So for simplicity's sake let's just say he lived in South Miami. A more famous example of this is Fairchild Tropical Garden. Its early publicity material said it too was located in Coconut Grove.   • First of all, you (an IP address) removed perfectly good sourced material on the subjects early years and college career and replaced it with utterly useless non-sense such as Rocky flagged down a truck in Demopolis to carry them to the hospital. I'm not the only long-time Wikipedian who has reverted your edits. What other Wikipedia has reverted my edits? You were the only one. None of the sourced info that was in that article was removed, and none of what was added can be considered vandalism. Rather than getting into an edit war, we should take this to the talk page.
For example, your edits to Adrian Zmed were reverted by another Wikipedian. Upon furthur inspection, I agree it wasn't vandalism. I tagged it as such because your edits to Adrian Zmed and Marty Lyons contained a bot-generated references removed tag which is usually the signature of a vandal.--Hokeman (talk) 00:02, 24 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at the November 7 edit of Adrian Zmed. I removed the statement that he once played for the Chicago Cubs. I did a pretty thorough search on the internet, and found nothing that even hinted that there might be some truth to that statement, so I removed it again. You say you believe that anyone who thinks Wikipedia is an unreliable source should continue their quest to find a better website. I strive to make it more reliable.
Look here, I went back and restored a bunch of stuff that you put in the Marty Lyons article. After I got into it, I realized that a lot of what you did was pretty good work. What pissed me off was when I saw stuff in there like Mrs. Lyons had bones sticking through her armpit, that some of my references had been removed, and that the article that I had worked so hard to reference was completely revamped and a lot of the changes were the opposite of how the Manual of Style says they should be done. I'm not sure, but I think that was a back handed compliment. I'm not gonna bother looking into old versions of the article to see what was originally there, and what I removed. I don't believe that I removed anything that was sourced; I don't believe I removed any sources, and I believe everything I added was relevant. His wife got into a pretty nasty accident during the season, and his small child's actions were worth a paragraph to me. I also happen to think that the birth of his child, his father's death and the death of that other kid all happening within a week, and inspiring him to form the Marty Lyons foundation was worth mentioning. It's in his bio on the Marty Lyons foundation website. BTW, I'm not quite done restoring stuff. I was going to put in the honors and awards; as well as restore the 'inspiration for Marty Lyons foundation' material, but there were a couple more resources to check. Please explain how I misused "See also". The misuse of the "See also" is something that I had pointed out to me a while ago on a similar topic. Personally, I don't use it at all anymore because anything that I would suggest the reader also see is linked within the article. What's the point? Your desire to restore this article yourself and fact check that which I and other editors have already checked also seems to hint of some ownership issues. I don't see why you need to remove what I've added, check it, and readd what you see fit to have in the article. The fact of the matter is that NOTHING relevant was removed, I moved the information about the Marty Lyons foundation to personal information, I removed a couple of facts that were mentioned twice, and removed dead links. You keep moving the place of birth into the intro, but the MOS now says to put it in the main body. (Years ago, that was the way to do it.) Those two references you removed were not dead links. I'm leaving the one from the Jets official page in there because their new player bios are under construction, they just haven't gotten to Marty's yet. Lastly, have you looked at the sock-warnings on Johnny Spasm's talk page?....You are somewhat of an enigma because you seem to have a great deal of talent, but you also are simultaneously doing bad things to the encyclopedia. I appreciate your appreciation of what I've done on Wikipedia. I assure you, I am no enigma; I've never done anything but ADD to an article, and would never even consider vandalizing or hurting a Wikipedia article in any way. I saw that Joe Klecko's article needed some fact verifying, and from there I've moved onto other members of the sack exchange. Gastineau's is terrible, which is why I've been saving it for last. Are you sure the dead link will be readded and readded at the same address? Because, if that is the case, then it should be readded. I'm not so sure, which is why I believe it is in everyone's best interest to add it when it is an up and running link. What's the point of having a dead link in the article? I also know what you were saying about the place of birth being in the main body. However, I thought it flowed better just leaving it with where he grew up in the main body, and sticking with the "old way" of doing things. Disagree? Fine, then CHANGE THAT. Don't just undo the entire article. Notice you are very active - Would you mind reviewing Rabbi Pinto page ? A major feature story ran on Rabbi Pinto, the largest story ever written about him and the few editors who control the board didnt allow neutral entrees to be placed. Need assistance from curious non interested parties.

The article was syndicated and picked up by Globes a major Israeli paper, The Real Deal a major NYC real estate publication and Vos Iz Neas Religious news service but entire chunks of article werent included. Can we have new eyes please ?
