:::@[[User:Ann14850|Ann14850]], the requirements seem to be creator name + link to file page, license name + link to license, and a statement along the lines of "No changes were made" (assuming you make no changes). So if you just include all the information in your post above, adding "No changes were made", you're good to go. My Wikipedia page disappeared

I had a Wikipedia page for a long time when suddenly my page was taken by a drag queen using my name. Since changed the spelling to a different version but if I search Venus De Light it still takes me to the drag queens page. I've been Venus De Light since 1979 and it is Federally Trademarked. I have starred in Shows around the world including the Las Vegas strip. HBOS's Real Sex 5, Playboys Girls of Rock Rock, former publisher of Cheri magazine and I don't want to put my entire CV here but you get the point. What happened to my page? 71.38.119.28 (talk) 07:14, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

are you sure this is wikipedia? there are no logs of any page named venus de light. ltbdl (talk) 07:21, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
When I search for that page I don't get redirected anywhere. That being said, looking at the deletion log, I don't see any entries for an article with that name. Broadening the search to all public logs, there are still no results so I don't see any evidence that an article with that name ever existed. See Venus D-Lite. An IP editor, presumably the same person who started this topic, tried to change it to be about Venus De Light back in 2019. Squeakachu (talk) 07:59, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The versions mentioning Venus De Light instead of Venus D-Lite were all by 71.38.79.228 and lasted for a total of 42 minutes before the page was protected due to persistent disruptive editing by the IP on 12 June 2019.[1] An article called Venus D-Lite should be about Venus D-Lite and not somebody called Venus De Light. New suggested articles can be submitted at Wikipedia:Articles for creation but it's hard to satisfy our criteria and it's strongly discouraged to write a Wikipedia:Autobiography. If an article about Venus De Light was accepted then the top of Venus D-Lite could add a link called a hatnote for readers who were looking for Venus De Light. Adding Robert Eckels to South Texas College of Law Houston

How do I add Robert Eckels as a Notable Alumni of South Texas College of Law Houston? He does not have a Wikipedia page, but he has a page on conservapedia, plus his career is noted in several mainstream publications. He is a former State Representative of the Texas House of Representatives, and is a former County Judge of Harris County, Texas. Lowerportcaddo2023 (talk) 19:42, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There first needs to be a Wikipedia article(the preferred term, not the broader "page") about him before he can be added to any lists. If he was a state representative he would meet WP:NPOLITICIAN so as long as you have sources to summarize it shouldn't be too hard to create an article. 331dot (talk) 19:48, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you. Very helpful. Lowerportcaddo2023 (talk) 02:52, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Lowerportcaddo2023: While Wikipedia does have criteria for inclusion called "notability", having an article on Conservapedia (or any other wiki) does not matter here. For more information about creating an article here, see Help:Your first article. GoingBatty (talk) 02:14, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Very helpful. I’ll check out GoingBatty. Lowerportcaddo2023 (talk) 02:53, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've started the barest of stubs on Eckels. Apparently Conservapedia doesn't allow access to the source code for their articles, so I wasn't able to mine the sources. That's okay, since a lot of those sources are not of a quality useful for a Wikipedia article. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:42, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Ltbdl then how about respond whether to support or to oppose or be nuetral or etc. in the discussion? ♒️ 98TIGERIUS 🐯 03:27, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @98tigerius: huh? ltbdl (talk) 04:13, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is assumed that the initiator of any request supports the request: if they change their mind, they will usually withdraw the request.
Since most things on Wikipedia are not votes, it makes no difference whether the requester explicitly registers a "support" or not. What matters is the arguments from Wikipedia policy, and the requester is free to expound these just as much as anybody else. ColinFine (talk) 10:18, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Film still from 1914

Hello. Is it possible to include a screenshot from a 1914 film in the body of an article? Thank you BJCHK (talk) 02:18, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@BJCHK: Generally yes. If the film was shown in the US prior to 1927, its copyright has expired and it is in the public domain. Caveats: if the still includes elements taht were added later such as frames, etc. then it is theoretically possible that those elements are still protected by copyright, so you would need to crop them. I know of no actual example of this. -Arch dude (talk) 02:27, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! The issue is that |website= is not a valid parameter for {{cite book}}. If you want to reference the printed version of the Australian Dictionary of Biography, then use {{cite book}} without the |website=. If you want to reference the web site, then use {{cite web}} with |website=. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 02:39, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again! An informative and helpful result is I think even simpler to obtain than what GoingBatty suggests. Simply change website= to via= (and preferably name the website that immediately follows this "="; don't just supply its domain name). -- Hoary (talk) 02:44, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That is not a good solution. |via= has a specific meaning (see the template documentation). Do not abuse cs1|2 parameters to merely make error messages go away. A better fix in this case is:
    {{Cite Australian Dictionary of Biography |author=Brian Buckley |title=Lynch, Sir Phillip Reginald (1933–1984) |url=https://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/lynch-sir-phillip-reginald-14391}}
Brian Buckley. "Lynch, Sir Phillip Reginald (1933–1984)". Australian Dictionary of Biography. National Centre of Biography, Australian National University. ISSN 1833-7538.
    Trappist the monk (talk) 03:01, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ouch! I plead guilty to insufficient study of Template:Cite book. And insufficient sleep. After markup-stripping: Name of the content deliverer (if different from publisher). "Content deliverer" is a new term to me. (I was about to dismiss it as an obscure synonym for "website", but I suppose that material can still be available via ftp, DVD, etc.) But defined in any way that I can think of, here it's not different from the publisher. I did already know that it had to be different, but sleepily/hurriedly managed not to notice that here they're the same. Template:Cite Australian Dictionary of Biography is new to me. It got me looking for more. And more there is. -- Hoary (talk) 03:48, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Citing chapters

I'm citing a rather large tome split between four volumes and was wondering if there were any good ways to cite individual chapters. I've tried Template:Harvc, which unfortunately requires each chapter to have its own author. Krisgabwoosh (talk) 07:02, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You might do better to cite the book once, and then use short form referencing in the text. Use {{sfn|Krisgabwoosh|2023|loc=chapter 1}} as the format. For example, this sentence occurs in chapter 2.[1] Another thought taken from chapter 4.[2] But finishing with chapter 2 again.[1] If you want to see a fully worked example of SFN, see Frindsbury as an example.

    Citations

@Krisgabwoosh: If you are adding these citations to an article that is not already using {{sfn}}, it might be better to use {{rp}}. Others may differ, but I feel that {{rp}} is more consistent with the simple referencing style used in most articles, and we are not in general supposed to do a mass change of the existing referencing style in an article. -Arch dude (talk) 18:17, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see any Help Desk archives for September 2023 where they're supposed to be. I wanted to remind myself of an old thread but now am having problems finding it. Is scsbot broken? Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:54, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Very strange - they exist (for instance Help desk/Archives/2023 September 6), but Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives doesn't show them all, and shows some as red links (but clicking the link still takes me to the archive). 199.208.172.35 (talk) 14:00, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Einstein and Eddington

Some years ago I edited the entry for the film "Einstein and Eddington" as I was concerned that the film contained some serious scientific and historical errors. I inserted a section pointing out these errors and referenced each of my points. Recently I've discovered that this whole section has been deleted. Given the importance of the scientific discovery dramatised in this film I think readers should be aware of the egregious errors that are made. How do I reinstate the section I wrote and how can I be informed if such a thing happens again Reginaldgeorge (talk) 16:03, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reginaldgeorge It looks like it was removed in 2020 with this edit. No reason was provided. I would suggest discussing this on Talk:Einstein and Eddington. As for notification, it is up to you to monitor any articles you are interested in. You can add it to your watchlist(click on the star tab at the top and when it turns dark, you succeeded). 331dot (talk) 16:13, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Bear in mind that Einstein and Eddington is a dramatization rather than a documentary. In any dramatization historical "errors" are perfectly normal and to be expected. The references you provided were very vague, which may be why your contribution was removed. Be sure to cite everything and include relevant page numbers so that your points can be verified. Shantavira|feed me 16:38, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Reginaldgeorge: Unless your references specifically mentioned the movie, your contribution was original research (WP:OR), and OR is not permitted in Wikipedia. -Arch dude (talk) 17:32, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Having looked at the diff that 331dot linked to, it seems to me that your edit was original research. You weren't summarizing what reliable sources had said about the film, but synthesizing from the various sources you mentioned and what was in the film. That is not how Wikipedia works. WP:NAUTHOR Criterion #1

Yesterday I came across the article Herb Sutter through a redirect that's nowhere mentioned in the article and honestly should be deleted. But the longer I look at that page, the more I'm starting to think the entire page should be deleted; currently all of its references are either by Sutter himself or are directly from the organization he works for, and aren't even directly about him (e.g. meeting minutes). Looking up news articles mostly reveals the same thing: numerous ones that mention him or his role, but which are distinctly about the standard his organization's working on instead of him. Okay, wonderful.

The only thing stopping me from pursuing an AFD for this (besides the fact that I can't create pages) is the fact that he's written books and papers, meaning he's an author, and WP:NAUTHOR's first criterion for "creative professional" notability is

    1. The person is regarded as an important figure or is widely cited by peers or successors.

Which if that isn't vague, I don't know what is. How is one supposed to objectively tell if a person counts as an "important figure"? He has a single paper with 1714 citations; does that qualify as "widely cited"? (And given none of his other papers have even half that number of citations, is it really fitting to grant somebody a Wikipedia article for a single paper they wrote 18 years ago when they don't even pass GNG?) All in all, how should I objectively apply that criteria to an article when both requirements seem rather subjective to me?

(And if it turns out this person doesn't meet the criteria and no one else can find coverage actually about him, could someone please create an AFD for it?) 2603:8001:4542:28FB:E56D:1D24:B019:A2E (talk) 14:21, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't look good, and while I'm not hugely familiar with WP:NAUTHOR, it sounds like he doesn't qualify entirely. I would recommend opening a deletion request. Industrial Insect (talk) 18:13, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To answer a few of your points:
    1. The subject of the redirect was mentioned in the article between May of 2018 and October of 2022. The section was removed in this edit with an edit summary of "no indication this notable".
    2. Regarding your question of "How is one supposed to objectively tell if a person counts as an "important figure"?" - this is one of the issues with subject specific notability guidelines. You know if a person is an important figure if reliable sources say they are an important figure. If reliable sources talk about the person and say they are an important figure, the person meets GNG and we don't need that criterion in NAUTHOR.
    3. Regarding not being able to create the AFD subpage, I can help you with that if you want to write your nomination rationale on the talk page and ping me in the comment.

@331dot Sorry for the late reply, but I'm just curious as why. I don't feel like posting on WP:AN because I think it does not belong there "it'll probably be deleted". foobarbaz 22:51, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I just didn't know if something in particular prompted your question. AN is the place to ask admins in general questions, such as why a particular action is not being done. Legitimate questions are not just deleted, but it of course it's up to you how much you want to pursue something. 331dot (talk) 23:10, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. My father is on Wiki but it's just a small obit. I have a lot of info I would like to add. He was a PhD and photographer for National Geographic. I would like to add all of his credentials. Can you help me please?? Smitchjack (talk) 17:03, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

     Courtesy link: Robert W. Mitchell - 199.208.172.35 (talk) 17:06, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Smitchjack One of the things that Wikipedia is not is a memorial site. So I hope your father's article is based on reliable sources showing how he is notable as defined here. You can certainly make suggestions to improve the article but in view of your conflict of interest you should not edit directly but make {{edit COI}} requests. You must cite reliable, published sources for anything you want to add. Your own knowledge is not sufficient. The use of that template will alert other editors to your suggestions. Ask again at the Helpdesk or Teahouse if you run into problems. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:11, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Mike. I'm going to have to figure out how to pull his "photo credits" from every book in which he's been published. There are hundreds. 2601:CD:C500:24C0:3577:EE4F:37E7:674B (talk) 21:14, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
IP editor/@Smitchjack, I'm not sure that will be useful information as far as an encyclopedia article goes. Take a look at Ansel Adams, especially the Photographs section, to get an idea of the type and amount of information which should be included. @Smitchjack: Hi there! You could also use the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard to request updates to the article. Be sure to provide all the details about the published reliable sources where anyone can verify the information. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 20:45, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Smitchjack Assuming that you are now the legal copyright holder of some of you father's photographs, by inheritance, you would probably be helping Wikipedia more by uploading a selection of them to Wikimedia Commons under its standard license, so that they could be used in articles and elsewhere by those who wished to do so. Contact me via my Talk Page if you need assistance to do that: I have in the past helped a professional photographer to upload some photos of his, now at Commons:Category:Photographs by Ed Gold. Bibliography of Olver Tambo

    bibliography 41.116.178.4 (talk) 19:36, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The article on Oliver Tambo has no bibliography. What help do you want? 119.245.86.251 (talk) 19:58, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Most articles about authors, like Oliver Tambo, have a box at the bottom labelled "authority control databases". You can open this box (hit the "show" button on the right) to get links to these databases, which provide bibliographies. -Arch dude (talk) 20:18, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Or simply search for Oliver Tambo in Amazon. Shantavira|feed me 08:41, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Moving page from Wikiquote to Wikipedia page

I created a Wikiquote page with my biography and thought I was creating a Wikipedia page. How can I (or you) move the material from the Wiliquote page to a main Wikipedia page, so that it shows up on a google search? AACSBProfessor (talk) 20:55, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, AACSBProfessor. The article you wrote on Wikiquote is unreferenced and unsuitable for Wikipedia in its current form. Please read Your first article and the Notability guideline for academics. Reading a few biographies of educators at Wikipedia:Good articles/Social sciences and society should give you a sense of what is required. Cullen328 (talk) 21:07, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    There is also good advice at WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY. Cullen328 (talk) 21:08, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also be aware that an article about yourself is not necessarily a good thing. 331dot (talk) 21:11, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If we haven't managed to dissuade you yet, the way you'd go about it is to edit Draft:Norean R. Sharpe, paste the page you created at Wikiquote into it, put {{subst:submit}} at the top, then wait for it to be rejected (as it inevitably will be). —Cryptic 21:20, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to check wikitext of an edit summary?

Hello. I was wondering how to check the wikitext of an edit summary to see what's the intended wikilink (if it points just to the page or to a subsection), in this case regarding Adflatuss' edit. Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 22:39, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The easiest way is to hover over the link and see what your browser says, assuming your browser does that. If you need the exact wikitext, it's available from the API - like this. The "1174764677" in that is the proper revision id (the number in a diff link that says diff=prev, not diff=next as in yours; or the oldid from clicking on a permalink). —Cryptic 23:12, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If your browser or device cannot show the url on hover then you can click the link and view the address bar in the browser. It goes to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:CRIT so it's not a section link. Help:Edit summary#Places where the edit summary appears gives a way [6] to see the wikitext: Partial revert to more inclusive version of template. [[WP:CRIT|Controversial]] is not a welcoming introduction to new editors. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:22, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Removing my DOB from my Wikipedia Page

    Hi,

reaching out to try and get my DOB removed from my wikipedia page. Sarah Jones (stage actress)

    please advise Sarahjones73 (talk) 23:17, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sarahjones73 It looks like you attempted to do so but broke the formatting of the article (not a "page"). Removing it depends on how public your DOB is; it was cited, but I don't know how widely available that source is. We can comply with such a request, but we can't necessarily guarantee it will be kept out if that information is very public. 331dot (talk) 23:27, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@331dot and @Sarahjones73, the source seems ok-ish, but atm I'm taking Sarahjones73's word at face value and removed the date (leaving year) [7] as recommended by WP:DOB. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:42, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    saving pages

    Hi.

I love Wikipedia; I make a small monthly donation, despite being broke, because I believe in the principles of Wikipedia & because I use it on a regular basis, often several times a day. It’s my ‘go to’ resource for info on the various topics I’m interested in.

But there is one aspect I find extremely frustrating: saving articles & then accessing them later.

I mostly use the Wikipedia app on my phone (Android…relevant?) & can save articles but only seem to be able to access them again if I’m at the “Featured article” page where there’s a ‘Saved’ button at the bottom left. If I’m anywhere but there, either a saved page or at a new article, the ‘Saved’ button says ‘Save’ instead (either dark grey if the page is already saved or white if not) & there doesn’t seem to be any way to access my saved articles. I can’t see any way to have my ‘Saved’ list open at the same time as other tabs (which would be really handy!!) or even to go to my list without closing all open tabs AND closing & reopening the whole app, which then reopens at the “Featured article” page. There are many times when I want to be able to easily switch between tabs e.g. a new, unsaved, & a saved article, so the way it seems to be at the moment almost (but not quite) makes the ‘Save’ function useless.

Also, there doesn’t seem to be any way at all to save pages if using a browser apart from bookmarking as with any other page.

    So, my questions are:

Is there a way to easily switch between saved/unsaved (or saved/another saved) articles? Maybe a guide somewhere to using the Save/Saved functions in the app? (Is anyone working on development of this function?...I’d happily do it if I had the skills…actually, what skills would I need?).

    • Is there a save function when accessing Wikipedia in a browser & if so, where is it?

    Thanks Jeffkes Jeffkes (talk) 10:28, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jeffkes You would probably find it helpful to read User:Cullen328/Smartphone editing. I expect Cullen328 himself will be able to answer the specifics. Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:54, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't share that expectation. Cullen has previously stated that he edits from a mobile device in desktop view. I'm not aware of any highly active editors who use the dedicated app. User:Jeffkes, the best place to find an answer to your questions might be mw:Talk:Wikimedia Apps, or one of the other contact methods listed at mw:Wikimedia Apps/Team/Android#Contact us. Folly Mox (talk) 13:25, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To answer your last question: no, there is no "saved article" function in the browser version. There is a watchlist, and you are welcome to curate your own list of wikilinks on your user page (or a subpage); but there is no automatic function, and the list in the app is not accessible from the browser version. This appears to be about your edit to Ederson (footballer, born 1993), which has been reverted. I find it difficult to believe that a living person could have been born in 1853. There are lots of Edersons, so you are probably confused, or your friend is: one of your edit summaries was "this is what my friend told me" and that's the sort of comment that will inevitably lead to a block. may i use an image of the city of cortland on my facebook group header? Ann14850 (talk) 13:51, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Ann14850, many images used on Wikipedia can be reused with proper attribution, though not all. Is there a specific image you want to use? Can you link to it or otherwise point us to it? Its file description page should have its licensing status. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 14:03, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Ann14850, the requirements seem to be creator name + link to file page, license name + link to license, and a statement along the lines of "No changes were made" (assuming you make no changes). So if you just include all the information in your post above, adding "No changes were made", you're good to go. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 17:50, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Are you referring to Cortland, New York or Cortland, Ohio or some other Cortland? The images in the articles I've linked are reusable as long as you properly attribute the source. For the details of the CC-by-SA licence, see the file pages (accessible by clicking on the images). Deor (talk) 14:13, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Giving Correction to a protected page

I just wanted to point out to the admins of Michael Jackson’s page, his age at time of death is incorrect. 2009-1958= 55 not 50 Trivia Font (talk) 15:27, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Trivia Font, 2009-1958 = 51 (leaving aside exact months for now). You can make an edit request at Talk:Michael Jackson if you would like to see something changed in the article (be sure to provide a source). 199.208.172.35 (talk) 15:32, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Trivia Font I assume you are referring to Michael Jackson the singer(there are many other Michael Jacksons with articles). Articles do not have assigned monitors; volunteers choose what to look at. Your math is in error; 1958 to 2009 is indeed 50 years of age as stated in the article. 331dot (talk) 15:34, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Two different dates on the same source?

Howdy! I'm tryin' to fix up the sourcing on Newspaper endorsements in the 2008 United States presidential primaries, but when I pulled up the Waltham Daily News Tribune to fix the dead link that's in the article, I found that the current location of the news editorial in question and the archived version of the original page have two different dates on the byline (first link January 25, second link January 27). I dunno if this is within scope here at the Help Desk or if I should take it to a noticeboard of some kind, but I'd appreciate any input on what date would be the most accurate for citin' the article.

    Thanks in advance! ~Judy (job requests) 17:40, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
