Need help with formatting
Hello, I'm trying to fix a formatting issue at The Homosexual Matrix. In the "online articles" section of the bibliography, two references (Lynch 1976 and Lynch 1977) have a red bot notice next to them starting "Check date values in". This is because the references are to a magazine that had a bimonthly format to describe its date (March/April 1976 in the first case, and July/August 1977 in the second case). I am not sure how to fix this. FreeKnowledgeCreator (talk) 23:22, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Valerie Falls project

You speak of the Valerie falls project being a 10MW HYDROELECTRIC unit. In the next sentence you speak of the station being converted to biomass from coal. These are @ DIFFERENT STATIONS. Valeri falls uses water as a power source. OPG Atikokan Generating Staion is the place that was converted from coal to biomass. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.235.225.105 (talk) 02:08, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pat Metheny

I'm not sure where to go, because it's not a big issue, but an anonymous editor has been doing something weird on the Pat Metheny article, continually removing and replacing the same basic information over the course of several edits a day going back a couple of weeks. The minor annoyance is that I have had to correct a couple of repeated grammar/spelling errors that he/she keeps putting in after I've corrected them, which is tiresome, but the whole editing pattern is weird and totally clogging the article's history/my watchlist. Like i said, not a huge deal, but also odd and annoying. PaulCHebert (talk) 03:30, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Do nothing whatever. Wikipedia:Conflict of interest explains. Quick summary for your client: "Wikipedia's rules prevent this. Wait till you're famous. Then reliable, independent sources will write you up; and then other, independent people can use these to create an article." -- Hoary (talk) 05:03, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Alisa Alyabyeva (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

I am creating a Wikipedia page for a Ballroom dance professional by the name of Alisa Alyabyeva. I have been advised by Fred C, that he has earmarked the page for speedy deletion because there are no references. Alisa has multiple YouTube videos and Google posts on the web to verify her authenticity. Please explain how I should proceed to avoid deletion of her page from Wikipedia.

Thank you . . .

Francios Fleur — Preceding unsigned comment added by Francois Fleuer (talkcontribs) 16:29, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Francois Fleuer, sorry but proof of this dancer's existence is not enough for us to include an article about her: we also need evidence of "notability", established through references to reliable, independent published sources where reporters or critics independent of the person have written about her in some depth. "YouTube videos and Google posts" (and social media pages) will not assist, as they may well have been put up by people associated with the dancer. Please see this advice on how to insert references.
The proposal to delete this article allows 7 days to improve the content. If you are able to find and insert at least one reference of the type I have described, then you are free to remove the tag by editing the page and deleting the top line. However, if independent coverage just does not exist yet, then Wikipedia cannot include an article about Alisa Alyabyeva until her career has attracted wider attention: Noyster (talk), 17:45, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing errors on Brantford

Reference help requested. Do not know how to fix broken reference names. Please help on "Brantford" and "Pangnirtung". Thanks, empirecoins — Preceding unsigned comment added by Empirecoins (talkcontribs) 17:34, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

On Brantford, you have tried to use a reference named "2016cma", but you have not defined such a reference. There is a "2011cma", but not "2016cma". --David Biddulph (talk) 17:43, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And on Pangnirtung you tried to use a name "C2016" without having defined it. The reference defined is "C2011". --David Biddulph (talk) 17:46, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Lancelot Cooper Draft

Hello editor Timothyjosephwood has informed me that my draft article Lancelot Cooper may well be rejected because of notability issues in that all my references are primary and none secondary. I replied to him that Cooper was indeed a notable person ( see his talk page) giving my reasons and it was only because nobody had 'discovered' his historical records previous to me that nothing had been written about him. I would like to know who makes the final decision concerning whether my article will accepted or rejected so that I can plead my case Aln Taylor Alantaylor17 (talk) 20:48, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Just because there exists historical records of Lancelot Cooper that doesn’t make him notable in the encyclopedic sense. He appear to just be one of the many other career criminals of that period which will also have records documenting their activities.--Aspro (talk) 21:25, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again Alan, the difficulty with the Cooper draft is that although he might have had an interesting life, he is not well known and little, if anything, has been written about him in independent reliable third party sources which is what Wiki requires. Consequently he is unlikely to be searched for in a general encyclopedia. Eagleash (talk) 21:39, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
• Pinging Alantaylor17. The fault of your argument on Timothyjosephwood's talk page is in the premise If [notability] refers to 'being worthy of being known' then.... - but notability has a very different meaning on Wikipedia, which is much closer to "is already known" than to "deserves to be known". See the link WP:N for more details.
As for who makes the final decision concerning whether [your] article will accepted or rejected, there is no "editorial board" with someone responsible for that. Some veteran editor will review your submission and either accept or reject it; it might take a while, because there are 654 articles waiting for review right now, and yours is probably not a simple decision either way (I suspect Timothyjosephwood was reviewing submissions and decided not to act on yours).
If the article gets rejected and you have a reason to think the review was incorrect, try to discuss it with the reviewer at first. You can resubmit it to have a second review if you still think they have an incorrect understanding of the guidelines, but AfC reviews rarely get overturned - AfC reviewers are usually better familiar with Wikipedia's guidelines than new authors. Finally, if an editor makes a serious breach of civility - e.g. if the reviewer declines the article with an unconstructive comment such as "that article is crap, and the author is an idiot" - you can report them here, but the odds of that happening is low. application to add an passport to international passport list

it's pleasure for me to contact you about the need of adding saharawi arab democratic republic passport to the list of country's passport. however this state is recognized as member of african union and her citizens access traveling through the world but they face troubles with international airlines companies which allowed the mentioned passport code. for this reason become more than necessary to register this new travel document on your wikidata and give international code to this passport to be valid travel document. once again the problem is found with the aviation companies across the world. then this country( saharawi democratic republc) (SADR) has right to included in the international passport's passport. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 197.251.143.59 (talk) 22:26, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Using efn with nested references

I'm working on a draft revision of a policy page (User:Sangdeboeuf/No original research), to enable full citations for sources mentioned in the explanatory footnotes, and to reduce clutter in the source code. I've created named references as described under WP:REFNEST and H:PREGROUP (see § Notes). My problem is that three of the numbered references are missing, and one footnote (name=BookReviews) appears blank. I assume I've made a mistake in the code somewhere but I can't locate it. Any help would be appreciated. —Sangdeboeuf (talk) 23:39, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have a bit of experience (not much) doing this and I'll look at it if no-one more experienced wants to take it on. I suggest making another test copy of the draft and reducing it to the minimum content that exhibits the problem to make it easier to work with. Meters (talk) 23:55, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Done – see changes here. The problem with one note appearing blank was apparently solved by getting rid of the external links in square brackets, but reference numbers 6–8 are still missing from the reflist. —Sangdeboeuf (talk) 01:39, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, just noticed your reply now. I'll take a look tomorrow. Meters (talk) 08:42, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Sangdeboeuf and Meters: I think you've run into a long-standing bug in the software, phab:T22707. You can use tags inside efn footnotes, but it all falls apart if you try to define the efn footnotes inside the notelist. I've made an edit at User:Sangdeboeuf/No original research 2 - the footnotes are now working, but your tidy coding is lost. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:01, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusionism

Is there a Wikipedia essay about inclusionism?

Easy way to link to current revision of a page?

It happens semi-frequently that I want to use a WP:PERMALINK to a page, usually when it points to a board that gets archived regularly. My usual procedure is to go to the page, click "history", click the first revision, and include the whole URL as an external link.

Is there a better (read: faster) way to do it? My dream would be a substituable template that goes and fetch the current revision of the page and replaces the code with a permalink, but I am not sure it is technically feasible. TigraanClick here to contact me 13:06, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

mw:Help:Magic words#Technical metadata of another page shows . I haven't found a template which uses it for your purpose but it could be made. [ Foo] produces Foo at the time of my edit. And Foo produces Foo. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:38, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Woah. The latter is exactly what I want. I might be going to ask template editors to code this - I mean, I am not the only one wanting this, right? TigraanClick here to contact me 07:45, 14 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Collapsing individual columns in table?

Hello, is it possible to create tables where you can toggle the collapsing of individual columns? E.g.

Show? 1 Show? 2 Show? 3
only on click only on click only on click
always always only on click only on click only on click
always always only on click only on click only on click

So the headers "Show?" 1-3 and "always" should always be visible, the other cells only on demand. I wasn't able to create such a table from Help:Collapsing
TIA! --Wikiinger (talk) 14:06, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No, nor is it likely to ever be possible. All the more because hiding content in general is simply a bad idea. Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Scrolling_lists_and_collapsible_content. If you find yourself in need of something like that, it should make you wonder if you are writing a proper encyclopaedic and readable article or not. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 14:45, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding page, Out & Loud - Pune International Queer Film Festival

Hi,

I have created a page for Out & Loud - Pune International Queer Film Festival and the content in the page is from the website outnloud.lgbtq.co.in. However, i got a notification that I have used the copyright information and the page is set for speedy deletion. But the website belongs me and my partner, and we are the owner of the website. So is it okay to have the same information or should i do anything to remove the speedy deletion tag from the page?

Sriram2792 (talk) 04:46, 14 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You need to take additional steps so that we can confirm that it is you who both own the copyright and wish to release it under a free license (see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials). However, in the vast majority of cases using such material is a terrible idea in the first place: chances are that it is not written from an encyclopedic, neutral angle. Even if it were, it certainly does not seem to be neither a reliable source nor a source that is independent of the article subject. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 05:06, 14 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sriram2792: Please understand that Wikipedia has little interest in anything which a subject (whether a company, a person, a band, a charity, or anything else) says or wants to say about itself. That includes the subject's own publications, and also anything published by an independent source but based on an interview or press release from the subject. An article should be largely based on what people who have no connection with the subject have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable places. In any case, every single fact or claim in an article should be derived from a published reliable source. Please see WP:V for more information. (This does not directly answer your question, which Finnusertop has already done; but is additional information that you need to know). --ColinFine (talk) 13:39, 14 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

PDF reference help

I added a reference to Flashboard, but didn't get it quite right. It's a journal that is published online as a PDF. I have all the bibliographic info correct, but didn't get the url right. I don't have time to experiment with this right now, and there is some urgency since the article is at AFD. Could someone help out. Searching for "Lawrence Bragg's role in the development of sound-ranging in World War I" locates the article at several other websites besides the one I was trying to link. @Leschnei: Thanks, but that is just an abstract of the journal. I had found a PDF of the entire journal over at www.defencesurveyors.org.uk, which was what I was trying to use in the ref. MB 03:32, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This page looks to be largely copied from page with copyright

I was doing a little copyediting on Rolf Gindorf when I realized that large chunks of it are lifted from his c.v. at www.sexologie.org. This was discussed on the talk page in 2006, but there has been no discussion at all since then (except for a note that I added). I don't think that the copied text can be removed without making the article unreadable and the article is largely unreferenced. I'm not interested right now in digging for sources in English to make it notable, but maybe someone else would be. He apparently has over 60 publications, and he and his partner sued for the right to marry in the German Supreme Court. What is the best way to proceed? Sorry, I wasn't clear. I suspect that most of the reliable sources would be in German, which I don't read. I have listed the article at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems. Leschnei (talk) 12:46, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect that this page may be getting edited by someone close to Mr. Blotzer as it keeps getting changed to reflect information that is in Mr. Blotzer's own best interest, but does not represent the facts of his main project, RATT.

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 5.3 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Reference help requested. I am very lost at how to fix this. May I have advice? Thanks, Kelleher82 (talk) 04:20, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There are a number of anomalies showing against various references. If you are referring to the larger red error message relating to ref name "upenn" this is because the ref name has been used (I.e ) without it being tied to an actual reference. (I.e. ). As it seems to be the only use of the ref name it may be redundant in any case. Just cite the ref. in standard fashion. Eagleash (talk) 04:51, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have fixed the other ref errors but do not know what should go in the citation "upenn". Eagleash (talk) 05:10, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Christianity in New Zealand

Christianity in New Zealand was introduced before the missionaries got there. The Bible society translated the Book of Luke into Maori. It was through a young girls death who had a copy it and the slave boy of the chief who killed her and took it. The slave boy could read English and read it to the tribe and from his chief believing and asking forgiveness it spread through the tribes. The missionaries were surprised to find that many of the Maori were Christians when they got there. Look for the story of Tarore. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.145.167.224 (talk) 05:44, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unlike Orangemike, I suspect that you are indeed referring to a problem with a Wikipedia article, Christianity in New Zealand. The place to bring up suggestions for improvement is that article's talk page Talk:Christianity in New Zealand. But please note that Wikipedia requires sources published in reliable places. I see that this supports what you say. I don't know whether or not the Kononia Institute would be regarded a reliable source; but if so then a summary could go into the article. --ColinFine (talk) 15:39, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting a Page - Request from PR Officer

I am the author of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staffordshire_and_West_Midlands_(North_Sector)_Army_Cadet_Force .

I require this page deleting due to serious security breaches to the Army Cadet Force organisation as result of its creation. As the author, I have the right to request deletion. I have made a mistake and I have been told by those in authority over me that I am to get this page removed ASAP as it also breaches Online Safety Policy.

Can I get help with this process? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ah1997 (talkcontribs) 12:47, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have tagged the page as an author request deletion. 331dot (talk) 12:50, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Ah1997: - For the future, you need to be aware that you don't as an author automatically have the right to have your contributions removed. The conditions (just below the edit window) under which you made your contributions say "By saving changes, you agree to the Terms of Use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL.". There is a concession made (WP:G7) if you are the only significant contributor to the page. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:18, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Ah1997: The page has been deleted. It is now accessible only by Wikipedia administrators. (This access is unlikely to get revoked; if your superiors insist, they might want to read Pierre-sur-Haute_military_radio_station#Controversy_over_French-language_version_of_Wikipedia_article before going through the proper channels, which are located at Wikipedia:Contact us). Ah1997, you should also be aware that, assuming you mean you are the PR Office for that Force, you should not have created the page in the first place, because of your conflict of interest. --ColinFine (talk) 19:47, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WWII Philippine Army Divisions

Hello. I am creating new articles on WWII Philippine Army Divisions. I want to use the small box template titled US Regiments (I have left off the template brackets), but would simply like to hide the name "US Regiments" and visually replace it with "1941-42 Philippine Army Divisions"---either by copying and creating a duplicate template that simply has a different name, or by some other means in my code allowing a different title to be displayed. Here is the original template code:

Usage: Template:US Regiments

Example: Template:US Regiments sidebar

I want MY new example to look like this:

Example: Template:1941-42 Philippine Army Divisions

I am new at learning your code, navigating your help pages, and I don't know how to create a new template, or to edit the US Regiments one to make a different title be displayed (i.e. "1941-42 Philippine Army Divisions"). Either solution would work for me. Please help, and thanks! Mluklu7 (talk) 14:20, 15 February 2017 (UTC)Matt Underwood[reply]

(See Article on 11th Division (Philippines) for example of my attempt to use this box template, etc. Notice the template works; I simply need to change the title in my edit code so it will read "1941-42 Philippine Army Divisions", instead of "U.S. Infantry Regiments".) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mluklu7 (talkcontribs) 14:40, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mluklu7. That is a template called US Regiments, which, unsurprisingly, has the title built in. What you would need to do is create a new template called Template:1941-42 Philippine Army Divisions. You can create this - if you pick that red-link, it will let you create it; and then if you go to Template:US Regiments, and pick "edit source", you can copy the whole source of the template to the clipboard, and then paste it into your new one, and change what needs to be changed. Make sure that in your edit summary you say where you copied it from, according to WP:Copying within Wikipedia. --ColinFine (talk) 19:56, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks, ColinFine!!! I will tackle this problem, using your very helpful solution, in a few hours! (Meantime, will be traveling.) Mluklu7 (talk) 20:06, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Alexander Graham Bell

I asked for help at Talk:Alexander Graham Bell to remove some meaningless words, but the responding editor told me I had to obtain consensus for it. Would you please fulfill the request and tell the responding editor to be less bureaucratic? My entire request was "Please remove "Margaret Ottaway" from the top of the "Canada" section, or explain what it's doing there. It looks like an actress' name, like you'd put in The Story of Alexander Graham Bell, such as "Bell meets his sister-in-law Caroline (Margaret Ottaway) in the next scene" to indicate that Ottaway was playing the character of Caroline." 208.95.51.115 (talk) 16:39, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It does look at first sight as though it doesn't belong there, but it may be a pseudonym used by 'Caroline', but this is not clear from the text. Agreement on changes (often quite small ones) is how Wikipedia works generally. Eagleash (talk) 16:48, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed it, doesn't make sense as it is Jimfbleak - talk to me? 16:52, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I see that Becky Sayles has restored it, but without the brackets, so it makes more sense. --ColinFine (talk) 20:01, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Template out of date

Template:Gutenberg author uses an old link format. Can it be fixed? The code in Henry Bibb is , but the link that it produces, https://www.gutenberg.org/author/Bibb,+Henry, no longer works. http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/6033 is now the right link.

FreeKnowledgeCreator (talk) 23:22, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
