    Writing an article

    I am trying to write an article, it keeps getting declined due to lack of sources. The World Bushido Federation has its website and Facebook page at the moment.I either need someone to write it or to understand right now there's only 2 sources and approve it.     @Stingray3000: a subject must be notable by our definition before it can have an article. see WP:NCORP.     Or to put it another way: Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources.     Protected template problem

    Hi I am a director of the Mornington Peninsula and Western Port Biosphere Foundation. I visited our page and realised it was hopelessly out of date. Many government departments, organisations and external links and other things had disappeared. Images were incorrect. I have no idea who set the page up about a decade ago. However, they set up a citation template that is protected and I cannot fix citations etc.

    Is there any way I can become editor of this page so that we can correct all the issues that occur within templates?

    Citing clippings of a multi-page article at Newspapers.com

    Hello, Oona Wikiwalker. Your question lacks sufficient context for me to be highly confident in my answer, but here goes: If a newspaper published an article about a topic, and the article was published on pages 17 to 19, then include 17-19 in the page number field. It makes no difference whatsoever whether you found the the article at Newspapers.com or in a stack of old newspapers that your grandmother saved. It is all the same.     The bit that Cullen328 has not spelt out to you, Oona, is that for most citations, a link is not an essential part of the citation, but a convenience added for a reader. The important bit is the bibliographic information (author, title, date, publication, page etc) that will allow a reader to a) estimate the likely value of consulting the source, and b) obtain the source, whether by picking a link, by ordering a copy from a major library, or anything in between, ColinFine (talk) 12:23, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Odd capitalisation in infobox

    In Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, infectious diseases is capitalised in the infobox, but not in the source text. Anybody know how to ensure it's written normally? —Femke 🐦 (talk) 16:49, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    This appears to be a bug in Module:String2 ucfirst() particularly at line 25 (permalink) where the mw.ustring.find() finds the piped link [[infectious disease (medical specialty)|infectious disease]] the label of which it then capitalizes. I guess I would have expected that function to capitalize the 'r' in Rheumatology (had it not already been capitalized). If I down-case the 'R' in Rheumatology the bug skips over that and still capitalizes the 'infectious disease' link label:

    infobox categories

    i'm working on a draft for a multimedia project and i'm trying to find an infobox for it. however i have 0 idea which one to use. the project itself is only music videos, audio drama, and occasional supplementary comics or questions, but i cant use the anime, manga, or musician boxes with it. are there any suggestions for boxes that would have potential for more detail but wouldnt be specific, or would i just have to code my own? -Astral~(he/him/his) 18:01, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Lead sentence of biography

    Hi! I'm currently editing the biography of a living person who's best known by a pseudonym. I've come to the conclusion that I can't include their last name under WP:BLPPRIVACY (as I'm doubtful that it's been widely published); however, as they have stated what their first name is in an interview, I believe that this is alright to include.

    I was wondering what the best way to word the opening sentence would be in this situation. I've checked MOS:BIO, and from what I can see, it would normally take the form of something like [firstname] [lastname], better known as [pseudonym]...; however, I can't see any guidance on what to do if only the first name is known/can be included - and [firstname], better known as [pseudonym] seems...weird, as (for one reason) it almost implies that the person doesn't have a last name. Is it better to just simply remove the legal name entirely from the lead sentence in this scenario? (Is there a part of the MOS that addresses this situation that I've missed?)

    Yep, but I don't believe it's been widely published enough to meet the WP:BLPPRIVACY threshold (and the only cited source that includes the surname is dubious as an RS), so I'm planning to remove it - but I don't know how best to reword that part of the lead sentence.     Page issue

    Review of blocked sockpuppet articles

    Recently 13Joker13 and လူကောင်း were blocked for being sockpuppet accounts. The full case can be found here but basically there are some real WP:CIR issues with this user. The following articles have been created.

    Given the CIR issues, I wonder do we need to do a review of articles to see if they can be kept or at least draftified first. For example Ulf Löfgren is almost a direct copy paste of google translate from the Swedish wikipedia page.

    How to display talk pages as web pages in mobile view?

    In mobile view, is there any way to display talk pages as web pages the way the "view as web page" button used to do?

    (Explanation, FWIW: Currently, talk pages by default appear in mobile browsers in a simplified form that shows only discussion threads and omits userboxes, templates, archive links et cetera. Although there is now a clickable "Learn more about this page" button that displays the omitted material, it shows only that material, without the discussion threads. I want to see the full page in mobile view without having to switch to desktop view.)

    @Middle 8 Sorry, there isn't really a convenient workaround. I hope this isn't too much of an inconvenience for you. The feature was almost entirely unused and required us to maintain two separate sets of styles.
    There is an inconvenient workaround though – if you add ?dtenable=0 to a page URL, you can view it with all discussion features disabled, for example https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Doctor_Who?dtenable=0. Note that this is only a debugging tool intended for developers, and so we can't promise that it will display things correctly (we no longer test this), or continue working at all.     Edit notice when editing article Star Control

    When editing the article Star Control, I see a note saying:

    There are suggestions on this article's talk page for references that may be useful when improving this article in the future. (See the talk page section that begins "The following ...".)

    There is no such section. Talk:Star Control is empty of discussion and its only archive Talk:Star Control/Archives/2023/December only has sections that begin with "The following" in the RFC and DYK sections.

    The note is referring to the banner on the talk page right below the WikiProjects. There are two links, one to an interview on Youtube and another to an Ars Technica article. It doesn't refer to any particular topic of discussion. That template could probably be improved by stating that it's pointing to a banner - stating "talk page section" is misleading Reconrabbit 16:59, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    The text is from {{Refideas editnotice}} where Jonesey95 wrote: '(See the talk page section that begins "The following ...".)'.[2] {{Refideas}} makes a box and is used at top of the page, not in a section. I suggest 'See the box that begins ...'. The previous sentence says "Talk page" and links the talk page so I don't think "talk page" has to be repeated. The link goes to Talk:Star Control#refideas-anchor which would normally place the box at top when you click it but the page is so short that most users will be placed higher up because the browser doesn't have room to scroll down.     Can’t access a Teahouse reply I was writing

    I was writing a reply to someone who in turn had replied to a question I’d raised there, when suddenly I ended up outside the Teahouse. I don’t know what happened. When I came back to the Teahouse, a system message told me my changes (which were original words I’d been typing, not changes as such) had been saved.

    The source in references 3 & 4, a newspaper report of the race, makes the point that it was very cold, so that alone is probably worth mentioning.     changing user name and creating a page

    Hi, I hope you can help me. I spent months last year trying to set up a page for a new vaccine technology but for some reason it was blocked. I then changed my username, as it was recommended and I got a message just now, that because my username was associated with the company, it was blocked. It was odd as the username I chose today and confirmed was not the one that opened up on the page - I put Lauramurf1 and Lauramurfe arrived and was subsequently blocked. I am not sure what to do.

    When I was going through the process last year, I also edited 11 articles as part of the process (in the original account/username) before attempting to set up a page. I feel totally stuck and do not understand what I need to do to progress with sharing the technology and clinical trial progress of this innovation for all to read on Wikipedia.

    Any help, support (not in technical language!) would be hugely appreciated.

Can you guide me as to the best way of setting up a page - I have read everything, altered the text, kept it to two sentances, only used content created by external references, not our created material. Some of the guidelines are difficult to clearly understand - is there a way to get instruction online?

    Two sentences are extremely unlikely to be sufficient to demonstrate notability. Instead of thinking of this as "setting up a page" for your company's work, think of it as writing an article about it. If you have independent reliable sources that discuss this process, that's what we are looking for, not what they company says about it.     In the process of being closed

    The National Institute Against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism (INADI in Spanish) has been closed some days ago. But the process is not automatic, and it will take some time to complete it.     Hello! There’s an article that has been marked with the ARBPIA template. I disagree that the article falls within the scope of the Arab-Israeli conflict. How can I contest or ask questions about this? Is there a record of the article’s designation as falling under ARBPIA, besides the edit diff where the template was put on the talk page? Thanks!     Marcelosca there is a blue button at the top of the draft marked submit for review. However, many of your supposed refs are his own papers, which are not independent verifiable sources. You must replace those with independent third party sources.     I am wondering

    I am wondering how do i go ahead and make edits. I know my account has to be atleast a month old with over 500 edits but i am wondering where i can start to gain trust in the wikipedia site. I think my knowledge could help topics that aret mainly talked about or maybe summaries of tv shows or movies. And i think because that would include spoilers i say that is someone is trying to research about a movie/show we could add text saying spoilers ahead incase thay havent seen the show/movie.     Regarding writing about TV shows etc, see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Writing about fiction, and the MOS:PLOT section in particular. Writing a concise plot summary is quite an art, and probably not something I'd recommend for a beginner - its too easy to end up with something far too long, and filled with trivia, if you aren't very disciplined.     Hello, Kobe5232. As others have said, the restrictions are only in certain places - editing in contentious areas, or creating new articles. Elseswhere, anybody can edit, even peope who haven't created an account.
    It is likely that some of your early edits will get reverted, because you won't yet have learnt about some relevant policies. Please don't get disheartened by this: we all needed to learn how things work. Please have a look at WP:BRD for how this dynamic is built into Wikipedia.
    A general guideline which will help is that Wikipedia isn't interested in what you know (or what I know, or what any random person on the internet knows): it's only interested in information that is documented in a reliable published source. If you want to add some infoermation, then find a source (and cite it) or don't add it. (Plot summaries are a partial exception to this, as the work itself is regarded as the source; but as Andy says, this is not always as easy as it looks, and you need to be very careful to add only a factual description of the plot, not anything that is your own opinion or interpretation of something in the plot).

    Please carefully read WP:BOSS, and perhaps show it to your boss too.
    As it stands I have requested your user page be speedily deleted as it is an inappropriate use of your user page. A user page is not an article page. However if you were to try and submit that text of your boss as an article it would be speedily deleted as being blatant promotion and you will likely find your account being blocked.
    Please understand any kind of promotion is prohibited on Wikipedia. We only have articles of people who meet our special category of notability. There is zero indication that your boss Shane Quick meets this criteria - he therefore does not merit a Wikipedia article at this time.

    Hi, as others have said please read WP:BOSS (and ideally your boss too) and WP:PAID and WP:COI.
    If you still want to publish the article in your sandbox, there's a button marked "Submit your draft for review!" at the bottom of your sandbox. However, in it's current state it would be rejected. All articles need to be written in an neutral encyclopedic tone and external links should not usually be in the main body of the text. But even if those were remedied, articles need to be able to show notability, especially the notability guide for people which can be shown with multiple in-depth reliable secondary sources. Those are sources which have no connection to the article's subject and cover the subject in-detail, not just a passing mention, and not interviews or social media.     When an article has been accepted into the encyclopaedia, then you can create redirects to it from other plausible names. But get the article written and reviewed first.
    Since you have little experience of creating new articles, I advise you to go slow, and make sure you understand notability, reliable sources, and neutral point of view. Please study your first article, and have a look at BACKWARDS.

    Mis-inclusions in AfD listings

    Category:AfD_debates_(Society_topics) and Category:AfD debates (Science and technology) currently contain a number of entries that link to individual deletion sorting pages (e.g., to Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Cricket) rather than nominated articles.     @Elmidae: The categories are supposed to be added by parameters to {{REMOVE THIS TEMPLATE WHEN CLOSING THIS AfD}}. This prevents the categories from being added to other pages. You can use a search like [3] to find pages which add the categories directly. It currently finds Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cricket player auction.     User inserting clearly wrong information

    I have recently noticed that User:Nwaiotbaw has inserted a lot of unusable content into articles about railways in Hong Kong and mainland China, including obvious factual errors such as the reversal of a railway service's driving direction even though it is obvious and indicated by the cited source that it runs on the left, changes to cardinal directions that are clearly wrong just from looking at a map or comparing the coordinates shown on the respective pages, and unsourced and overly detailed prose. Others have previously warned this user for inserting speculative information from their imagination and never writing edit summaries.

    I am at a loss for what to do in this situation, as the user has apparently never communicated with other editors in any way in talk pages or other forums, and has never responded on their talk page. Nowadays there don't seem to be many active editors in this space to keep track of dubious edits.
