When to remove the Orphan Template

I have expanded an article to un-orphan another article. Does one connection suffice to remove the orphan warning template at the top, or should more be established? The previously orphaned article in question is SAP Anywhere ElizabethIsAlive (talk) 10:47, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can remove it if there is at least one link. By the way, you should probably add a citation to the addition you made to the other page just so the section and link don't get removed. HansVonStuttgart (talk) 11:18, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ElizabethIsAlive - "Once it has an incoming link from at least one article or list, the orphan tag can be removed (disambiguation pages, redirects and draft articles do not count)." Quoted from banner on one the monthly backlog categories. More info at Wikipedia:Orphan. Regards, JoeNMLC (talk) 18:02, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But WP:ORPHAN also states: More colloquially, editors also sometimes use "orphan" to refer to pages that do not have as many incoming links as they ought to, even if they do not meet the technical definition for orphan status. The Banner talk 19:13, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's true, but it basically means one link needed, though Mrfoogles (talk) 20:35, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have a hypothetical questions about Freedom Caucus?

What If Freedom Caucus was a hypothetical European political party? would it belong to Identity and Democracy Party or European Conservatives and Reformists? If so, why do you think it would belong to the party. I am willing to hear your opinion and explanation why. 97.97.98.76 (talk) 06:18, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! That's not really relevant to Wikipedia; we answer questions about Wikipedia here. If you have any questions relating to editing or other aspects of the project, that's the purpose of this page. Happy editing ... sawyer * he/they * talk 06:21, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To be perfectly clear, speculation by editors is not permitted on Wikipedia. The role of Wikipedia editors is to summarize what reliable sources say. Nothing more and nothing less. Cullen328 (talk) 06:26, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

you're editing on an IP, which are reassigned periodically. as for your other question, you're welcome to ask hypothetical questions of that nature elsewhere on the internet, like Reddit, but you should keep things relevant to Wikipedia here. ... sawyer * he/they * talk 03:20, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I understand, but I unfortunately have no reddit account and I want to hear if Freedom Caucus would belong to ID party or ECR party. 174.135.36.220 (talk) 03:29, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
you're not going to get an answer here ... sawyer * he/they * talk 03:31, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You know what? I actually chose CER for Freedom Caucus.
  1. Both support economic freedom and limited government.
  2. Social Conservatism is also common with ECR like Brothers of Italy.
  3. Both support national identity.
  4. ECR and Freedom Caucus have devolution of power.
  5. Freedom Caucus and European Conservatives & Reformists also have right-wing populism like Law & Justice (Poland), JA21 (The Netherlands), Sweden Democrats (Sweden) and Vox (Spain).
So, therefore, it would be more likely to be European Conservatives & Reformist if Freedom Caucus were an European party. 174.135.36.220 (talk) 04:47, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Again, this isn't the place to ask this type of question. '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talk|contribs) 04:49, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Opps, sorry. 174.135.36.220 (talk) 05:06, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What is the difference between liberalism and social liberalism as I noticed that some ideology has the same meaning that I removed them, ex. in Swiss People's Party, swiss nationalism, national conservatism and anti-immigration have the same meaning, so I removed these. I was told that we have to keep Political Parties' articles simple in its template and ideologies. How do I carefully removed something from templates, so it will not get messed up. 174.135.36.220 (talk) 17:32, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you edit too much, can you get blocked for it since I am fixing some political party's article to make it simpler on template as some have same meaning or just too much. When is it too much?

Asking about a draft me and my friend did

Basically we did somewhat of a school project (our teachers will make it known across the school that we made an article and will make students use the page for an assignment soon ) on a mosque near our school. So is there a school project category we could add to the draft so that it can get a speedy review? Here is the link btw: Draft:Sidi Bishr Mosque Moe the Alexandrian (talk) 11:15, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is no quicker way to get a page reviewed I'm afraid, the page reviewers are all volunteers and they get to pages in no particular order. You could be waiting a couple days, or up to 2 months or more. CommissarDoggoTalk? 11:39, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I thought there was. Ok thanks a lot Moe the Alexandrian (talk) 11:49, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see that the draft has now been accepted as an article. I am surprised by the claim that the mosque predates the life of Mohammed. Maproom (talk) 13:27, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Maproom, @Moe the Alexandrian I think that is an "AH" date. MOS:ERA suggests a conversion should be provided. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:54, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, it's an AH date. Sorry for the confusion. Moe the Alexandrian (talk) 17:11, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Moe the Alexandrian I've linked to other languages via the Wikidata item and wikilinked the AH. I note you have now put in CE centuries but can you please check these? If today is 1445 AH, then I don't think that the 17th century CE can be the 5th century AH. Mike Turnbull (talk) 19:41, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thanks a lot for your help sir. Answer your question, I used this page: Timeline of Islamic history to help me identify the centuries in CE. It is stated that the 17th century CE begins at the year 1009 AH, which is the year the 5th century starts in the AH calendar. So I think I'm right, unless I'm very much mistaken, and if I am mistaken indeed please let me know! Moe the Alexandrian (talk) 20:27, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Who knew arithmetic was so complicated! Mike Turnbull (talk) 20:41, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Moe the Alexandrian Looking at Timeline of Islamic history § Islamic centuries to Gregorian I'm not sure you are correct! If you know an event happens in 1705 CE (i.e. the 18th century CE), then that is (by the linked table) in the 12th century AH. I think you made the mistake of looking for the 5th century AH and read across to 1009 - 1106: but these are the equivalent CE dates, not the AH ones. WP:TROUT me if I'm wrong. Of course, since I don't read Arabic, I don't know what date the source you are using actually says. Mike Turnbull (talk) 23:16, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah, you're definitely right. You read my mind, that's exactly what I did, I thought they were AH dates, but I thought wrong. I will change that error as soon I come back from a short trip I'm having. As for the arabic sources, don't really specify dates. Although there's much details about the mosque it seems there isn't much about the person it is named after, as he lived an isolated life and he preferred to live alone to worship and be closer to God. This might be the reason why they don't have exact dates of when he was born. Moe the Alexandrian (talk) 02:56, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cwater1 The second sentence is identical to a fandom post. Plot summaries don't always require citation (see WP:PLOTCITE) but must never be copied verbatim from elsewhere. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:39, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies though. A synopsis would be better instead of simple plot. It would still need to be in own words. I don't think Fandom is considered a reliable source. Cwater1 (talk) 19:31, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Moving my speedy deletion into draft

Hello, My article I had worked hard on Reference and User Services Association NEW was marked for speedy deletion. I understand why. Miss America 2025 (a pending article)

The first contestant of the Miss America 2025 which will come either for late 2024 or very early 2025 will be Miss Vermont 2024. The Miss Vermont contest is expected somewhere between April 11 and April 14. Though I improved the Miss America 2025 article here, she still has a ways to go before completion after next year’s Miss America Pageant. Can everybody please do their parts in improving this Wikipedia article? There are good and multiple sources in Miss America 2025 draft here on the English Wikipedia. This is not the forum to request that others edit a particular article. No one has any specific "part" to play here- people do what they choose to do. 331dot (talk) 19:44, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Angela, and welcome to the Teahouse. A Wikipedia article summarizes what independent reliable sources have published on a subject: that is all.
Since no such source yet exist about Miss America 2025 (at least, your draft does not cite any) there is literally nothing that can go into an article about Miss America 20245 today.
Please wait until the sources exist, and then write your draft from them, rather than WP:BACKWARDS. ColinFine (talk) 21:11, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry that you've been scammed.
Whether an article about you is kept, altered, or deleted, depends on Wikipedia's rules: the people who scammed you have no power over it. Nor, I'm afraid, do you; but you are welcome to request changes to it (which may or may not be met, again, dependent on how far they match Wikipedia's principles).
If you meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability (most of us do not), then the article may well be kept, but if you do not, it will eventually be deleted.
If you wish to request edits to it, please use the edit request wizard to do so. ColinFine (talk) 09:34, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Does the article exist as an article or just a draft? Either way, if you provide a name you will get better advice. David notMD (talk) 09:57, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Gardendcs: Hi there! Although several editors have posted on your talk page, I don't see where you have declared a conflict of interest on your user page or at Draft talk:Gibbs Gardens. The draft has two unreferenced sections. The MSN reference needs to be fixed. I didn't check the references to see whether they are independent sources. GoingBatty (talk) 01:25, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gardendcs Unreferenced content added by an editor with an undeclared conflict of interest is advertising. The tone of the draft is "this is a really great place" rather than neutrally describing what the place is. Properly declare your conflict of interest, add references to reliable sources for all unreferenced content, or

remove the unreferenced content. Cullen328 (talk) 05:36, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For example, the text has "In spring, weeping willows and cobalt-blue variegated water irises are reflected in the ponds. Ferns and the blossoms of Kurume, Satsuki, Indica and native azaleas; dogwoods; mountain laurels; Yoshino and Kwanzan cherry trees; trilliums and wildflowers are in bloom. In fall, the Japanese Gardens feature vivid foliage colors in shades of red, gold and crimson." Is that your personal observation or a source that can be referenced? If the latter, did you copy, which would be a copyright violation. David notMD (talk) 10:04, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A.I. images instead of real photographs

Where do you report A.I. images/artwork being used instead of actual photographs? And does Wikipedia have an A.I. alert in place yet for these kind of things? A.I. images shouldn't be allowed when pretending to be real photographs. Please advise. Thank you! WHIMPEYD (talk) 00:55, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WHIMPEYD, first check to see whether the file is at Commons. (It probably is.) Requesting unprotection for multiple pages

I found some pages that are currently fully protected from more than 10 years ago and have little to no history of vandalism. I would like those pages to be unprotected so non-admins can add rcats. How do I make such a request? TheWikiCyclone (talk) 02:42, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Requests for page protection includes an option for "request page unprotection".
I'd also point out that "fully protected from more than 10 years ago" and "little to no history of vandalism" may be causally linked. DS (talk) 03:05, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DragonflySixtyseven Yes, but however I am trying to list all of the pages that need to be unprotected in a single request. For example, if I the following pages to be unprotected:
TheWikiCyclone (talk) 03:57, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Each of these pages, TheWikiCyclone, is a redirect. Anyone with a good reason to have, say, Mollusk either become an article so titled or redirect somewhere other than Mollusca is free to propose just that. Launching a discussion of whether Mollusk (with the others) should be unprotected on the off-chance that somebody might have a good reason to repurpose it yet be too timid to ask for unprotection in order to allow such repurposing strikes me as a waste of people's time. Still, if you must request it, then DragonflySixtyseven has pointed to the place where you can do so. -- Hoary (talk) 05:40, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Dmytro Kushneruk

There seem to be enough references for WP:GNG in the lede of Dmytro Kushneruk. Could someone check, opine, and maybe remove the warning? Thx Trzb (talk) 04:13, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Trzb Six refs in the Lead to confirm he is a dipiomat is over-referencing. (Perhaps some of those can be moved to the section about the Russian invasion.) In general, government appointments (diplomats, government, military) are less likely to have Wikipedia-notable careers compared to elected. David notMD (talk) 10:14, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@David notMD, thank you for your response. I don't disagree about moving the refs (and can make the changes when the main issue is addressed), but hope this in no way affects sufficient media coverage per WP:GPG. Not sure how Kushneruk's being appointed affects the interpretation of media coverage. Trzb (talk) 08:11, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading screenshots in Wikipedia Commons

I just noticed an editor uploaded a YouTube screenshot in Wikipedia Commons[1]. Is this allowed? Hotwiki (talk) 06:28, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hotwiki, that's a Commons matter, not an en:Wikipedia matter. And it doesn't claim to be from YouTube. However, there's no evidence on commons:File:Kylie Minogue for Life in Looks by Vogue (cropped).png that it's either in the public domain or copyleft, so please go there, click on "Nominate for deletion", and add a comment such as "No evidence that this is not conventionally copyright ('all rights reserved')". -- Hoary (talk) 06:46, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It should be better attributed. These images have their own category: c:Category:Screenshot images from VOGUE Taiwan YouTube account, and you can look up previous deletion discussions for some of them. It appears that Vogue Taiwan released a lot of videos under a CC licence, for example, see the description for this one.[2] You'd need to ask if it's a legit account that holds the copyright, and whether they released it under this licence. It looks to me like the answer is yes. But as Hoary says, it's initially a commons issue. -- zzuuzz (talk) 06:53, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Article Posting

How do I post/create an article on Wikipedia? Elite death (talk) 07:52, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Elite death Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. Your very common question is like asking "how do I build a house?" It is a very complicated process that requires much education and knowledge, one cannot just dive right in to home building. You need an understanding of land acquisition, permitting, construction, plumbing, electrical, landscaping, and so on- you can't just start nailing lumber together if you want to succeed. Writing a new article is similar- it is the most difficult task to perform on Wikipedia. New users who dive right in often end up frustrated and angry as something they spent hours on is mercilessly criticized, edited, and deleted by others. I don't want you to have any bad feelings here. It is highly recommended that you first gain experience and knowledge by spending time editing existing articles in areas that interest you, to get a feel for how Wikipedia operates and what is expected of article content. Using the new user tutorial will help you as well. I'll post some information on your user talk page.
However, if you still want to attempt to create a new article now, please see Your First Article, and then visit the article wizard to create and submit a draft for review(new accounts cannot directly create articles). You will want to first gather at least three independent reliable sources that give the topic you want to write about significant coverage, and show how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of notability. What do you want to write about? 331dot (talk) 08:09, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Help with draft for foreign language

Can someones from China, speak Chinese, or part of Portal:China help find refs in Chinese website (especially about review/reception, development) or article to expand Draft:The Lost Village (video game). I can't speak Chinese and English is my second language, but now I'm interested in expanding currently trending Indie game from Steam and Epic in Wikipedia.

Also, for the next oppurtunity, where should I post request help similar to this other than in here? EdhyRa (talk) 11:23, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

EdhyRa, looking for good source material, reading it, digesting it and summarizing it accounts for much of the work of creating an article. So you're essentially asking "Can someone do most of the work needed to create an article on the video game 'The Lost Village'?" This is highly optimistic. If English is a second language for you, congratulations, you have one or more different first languages. This/these may be most useful. For the next opportunity, perhaps read up on a subject that's plentifully written up in a language in which you're adept. -- Hoary (talk) 12:55, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's the problem, the good source material is only in Chinese. That's why I'm asking for help. If no one helped then it's okay. There are many video games released for English version, but most of the material is in original language of the game studio, including local news about game development, and reception like accolades, etc., in Chinese, Japanese, France, Polish, etc.
I thought Wikipedia community is a 'help each other' community, maybe I'm wrong then :( EdhyRa (talk) 13:12, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If it weren't, then nobody would be answering questions at the Teahouse!
People work on what they choose. If you want people to do the major work on creating an article, that's not impossible - but why should they put in a lot of effort for something that is what you want to do, rather than what they want to do?
You might possibly have more success asking at WikiProject Videogames, or even WikiProject China; but don't hold your breath. ColinFine (talk) 17:59, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Listing format of births in given years

I wonder why some pages for some years no longer show the births of celebrities in sequence? that is, it's no longer possible to look up what individuals were born on certain days or weeks (such as 1983, say). The Four Tides

Hi,

When I give IP users {{subst:uw1}} and etc. warnings and the {{sharedipadvice}} on talk pages, I notice other editors generally add their signature (four tides) after the uw-warning and before the shared ip advice. However, when I do that in the source editor, after adding the four tides after the uw-warning, it still automatically shows another signature at the very bottom of the talk page message (auto-sign). Is there a way to fix this?

Thx,

Myrealnamm (💬talk · ✏️contribs) at 20:08, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Myrealnamm My suggestion is to use Wikipedia:Twinkle. It will automate the process and will automatically add your signature for you. Relativity ⚡️ 20:20, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Myrealnamm: The automatic signing happens when you use the reply tool, called "Enable quick replying" and "Enable quick topic adding" at Special:Preferences § mw-prefsection-editing. Twinkle doesn't use the tool. It doesn't appear you can avoid an automatic signature at the end of the whole post if you use the tool. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:12, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Which message are you referring to? Something on your user talk page? 331dot (talk) 21:53, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was looking at other wikis and found an Italian one, the Google translate thing turned on and it had set to English because I can't understand Italian very well. And I was just browsing and suddenly a message popped up saying "Don't post inappropriate content". On the Italian wiki talk page. Starixxgamerrix (talk) 22:03, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Starixxgamerrix: Welcome to the Teahouse! The people here at the English Wikipedia cannot make any changes on the Italian Wikipedia. The Italian Wikipedia doesn't seem to have their own Teahouse, but they have a Help Desk at it:Aiuto:Sportello informazioni. When I use Google Translate on that page because I don't understand Italian either, I see a message stating "Do not leave your email, telephone numbers, personal and/or sensitive data". It's not an accusation claiming I have done so, but a warning to prevent me from doing so. I hope the "Don't post inappropriate content" is also a warning. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 22:28, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The whole thing looks a lot like an automated welcome message, really. CommissarDoggoTalk? 22:37, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Starixxgamerrix: This Teahouse is for the English Wikipedia. Please always say if a post involves another wiki. it:User talk:Starixxgamerrix has an Italian standard welcome message which includes "Scrivi nuove voci o modifica quelle esistenti, ma non inserire contenuti inadatti." Google Translate says "Write new entries or edit existing ones, but don't post inappropriate content." It's about the future and not a comment on something you did. "inappropriate content" links to an Italian page about what not to put on Wikipedia. The message has been posted to more than 600,000 users at the Italian Wikipedia so I guess the wording is not considered controversial. If you wonder why the message came before you had edited then a local version of your account is automatically created at a wiki if you view any page while logged in, and some wikis send welcome messages to new accounts with no edits. I have been working on the Josiah Bartlett article and all sources that I find - books, vital records, his gravestone - state that he was born on November 21, 1729. Bartlett's article says his date of birth is "December 2, 1729 [ O.S. November 21, 1729]".

Because December 2 isn't in anything I am finding, my gut reaction is to say that his date of birth is November 21, 1729 - and have an {{efn}} note that states that his date of birth is "December 2, 1729 [ O.S. November 21, 1729]". I don't know anything about this, would that be okay? Or, is there a better way to handle it?

Thanks so much. I have had several things that have popped up this past four weeks that I cannot sort out and have brought to the Teahouse and you have been amazing!–CaroleHenson (talk) 23:11, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi CaroleHenson. November 21, 1729 in the Julian calendar is December 2, 1729 in the Gregorian celandarcalendar. Josiah Bartlett was born in a place which switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 1752. Since it happened during his lifetime, I think it's OK to give both dates directly in the lead like now. It would be a little confusing to show his birth in one calendar and his death in another inside the same parentheses. His birth is written with {{OldStyleDateDY|December 2,|1729|November 21, 1729}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:56, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, good. I will leave it as it is and add a note: "November 21, 1729 in the Julian calendar is December 2, 1729 in the Gregorian celandar. Josiah Bartlett was born before the Julian calendar switched to the Gregorian calendar in 1752." I am guessing I am not the only one to be confused about this.
Thanks so much for clearing this up for me.–CaroleHenson (talk) 01:12, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@CaroleHenson: I made a typo in the second "calendar". The Gregorian calendar was originally introduced by the pope in 1582. Different countries switched at different times. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:22, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PrimeHunter, okay great!. If I change the 2nd sentence to "Josiah Bartlett was born before Britain and the British Empire (including colonial America) switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar in 1752." will that work?–CaroleHenson (talk) 01:38, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@CaroleHenson: That works. Maybe a bit long but seems acceptable for a footnote. Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers § Julian and Gregorian calendars only says: "Where it's not obvious that a given date should be given in Julian alone or in Gregorian alone, consider giving both styles, for example by using {{OldStyleDate}}." Conflict of interest question about editing the pages of alumni + previous/current professors at your current college.

I'm an editing newbie and was wondering whether it was a conflict of interest to edit or create new pages for prominent alumni and professors of the college I currently go to. None of the biography pages are for individuals I have met or are directly connected to. However, some of these edits would involve adding my college to their biographical page. Neurobyte (talk) 04:19, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Neurobyte. Thank you for thinking about conflict of interest. In my view, conflict of interest is a continuum rather than a black or white, yes or no situation. Every editor has a very mild or minor conflict of of interest because we all write content about topics that fascinate and engage us. The critical factor is the editor's core motivation. Is the editor here primariliy to improve the encyclopedia, or primarily to promote their personal hobby horse. You are, as you admit, very new. If you comply scrupulously with the Neutral point of view, and defer to experienced, uninvolved editors, you should be fine. The review of content by uninvolved editors is the best way to avoid non-neutral content making its way into the encyclopedia. Cullen328 (talk) 06:50, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Neurobyte (talk) 06:56, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Neurobyte Cullen's advice is good. Mine would be to be quite open, as you have been here. Most experienced editors at Wikipedia are volunteers and hate undisclosed paid editing, which is one extreme form of COI. Other COI, such as citing your own academic publications, is not forbidden (see WP:SELFCITE). I suggest you start by adding to existing biographies, bearing in mind the policy at WP:BLP. Later, once you have built up experience, you could try drafting a new article: there's guidance at this essay. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:52, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User talk page restriction?

New replies are welcome. 14 novembre (talk) 🇮🇹 13:46, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @14 novembre You are accused on Italian Wikipedia of being a WP:SOCKPUPPET of User:Calicanto2023, where both accounts have been blocked by User:Elwood. You certainly talk like someone happy to be a sockpuppet over there again, which is a shame. I am surprised it.wiki doesn't not have a process (as we do here) to request an unblock from your primary account after 6 months or more of no repeat offending has occurred. I'm not going to give you advice on how to get round a block for sockpuppetry, but waiting several months won't make any difference to the technical ability of Checkusers to determine if you have been breaching the respective rules of either Wikipedia. Nick Moyes (talk) 13:47, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see there is an equivalent page to appeal a block (see here), though there appears to be ongoing debate which might affect how it applies to blocks applied before March 2024. So waiting several months for a consensus to form could be a good idea anyway. Nick Moyes (talk) 13:51, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure why you're posting about this here. If you're looking for a Teahouse host to tell you it's OK for you to WP:EVADE your block on Italian Wikipedia, then you're barking up the wrong tree so to speak. What happens on Italian Wikipedia, however, shouldn't affect your status on English Wikipedia as long as you edit according to English Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and don't start otherwise creating problems. If you don't want to contribute to English Wikipedia anymore, then don't. If you want to take a break and then come back later, then that's OK too. Don't try to get others to make your decision for you; you decide what you're going to do. If anyone is going to suggest anything, then it should be to not underestimate the experience of checkusers in detecting block avoiding accounts even after some time has passed; most of them seem to be pretty good at doing so because the blocked user almost always has a tell that eventually shows itself. Perhaps the best thing for you to do is to find out what you need to get your Italian Wikipedia account unblocked and restored back to good standing. On English Wikipedia, there's something called WP:OFFER; perhaps Italian Wikipedia does something similar. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:47, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Marchjuly @Nick Moyes
Thanks for your answers. I have taken the decision to continue editing here (I will probably do a small pause) and hopefully in some time there will be the possibility to appeal the block ok itwiki. So I think the best thing is continuing to respect the block, although believing it wrong, to avoid further consequences. Thanks again, kind regards 14 novembre (talk) 🇮🇹 13:55, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures

Hi! How do you make a picture smaller, I added one to my user page but it's overcrowding my user page and I can't read anything. So I need that picture to be smaller. You can see it at HermoineGranger54. If anyone can help that would be great! Thanks! HermoineGranger54 (talk) 16:21, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming you're on PC and using the visual editor, click on the image, edit it, then go to "Advanced" at the top. You can then set a custom image size. CommissarDoggoTalk? 16:23, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Editing a page that was removed

There was a company page for CitrusAd (a retail media company) but it was removed. I don't know why it was removed, but I would like edit it so it is accessible for others to know the history of the company, but I am not sure how to find it or where to start. TLN27 (talk) 16:29, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The page was moved to a draft on 5 November, 2022 for "Quarantine likely covert advertising" The draft was then deleted under WP:G13 on 3 May, 2023 because it was deemed to be abandoned. You can request that it be refunded to you at WP:REFUND/G13. CommissarDoggoTalk? 16:37, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for informing me. I do not understand "refunding" it to me. I did not pay for anything- I was only going to edit or update it. Does "refund" in this instance mean, I would take "ownership" of it or it would then be put in my hands for editing? Thank you for your guidance. TLN27 (talk) 16:42, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It means you could edit it, not that you own it. What is your connection to the page? Equine-man (talk) 16:47, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have connection to it in that I specialize in retail communications in the space of CPG (consumer packaged goods) and retail media. My connection to the page is I formerly worked on PR projects for that company prior to them being sold. I continue to work in the retail media space, but with other clients and companies. TLN27 (talk) 16:58, 14 April 2024 I would appreciate any help in how to properly restore it and resolve any issues. I am new here-- so I'm sorry if this is like hand holding. TLN27 (talk) 17:02, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Refunding essentially means that it will be returned to its draft state. As Equine above asked, do you have a connection to this page at all? CommissarDoggoTalk? 16:48, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, TLN27. "REFUND" here has nothing to do with the ordinary English word "refund", but is a bit of Wikipedia jargon for "Request For UNDeletion". ColinFine (talk) 18:00, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notability and Neutral Point of View.

Hi Edit support,

I am trying to build a Wikipedia page for Victoria Wyeth, I am receiving no benefit for my actions. I do not know Victoria but I do have her permission to proceed with this endeavor. My first submissions has ben denied approval on the grounds of notability and neutrality. I do believe that Victoria is sufficiently notable because she is an active part of the Wyeth legacy. Victoria is working to improve the public knowledge through her presentations.

But, when I try to develop a better submission to get over the notability question, I fall foul of the neutrality rule.

What can I do to correct or improve my submission?

Paul Paul7384 (talk) 16:35, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The large majority of the page is uncited and does not at all sound like it's presented in WP:WIKIVOICE.
As an example, the first paragraph reads "Victoria Wyeth is an accomplished and passionate lecturer, traveling world wide, her audiences benefit from her unique perspective through her first hand experience combined with her extensive research. As the granddaughter of renowned artist Andrew Wyeth, she carries forward a legacy of creativity and talent. Additionally, being the great-granddaughter of the celebrated illustrator N.C. Wyeth and the niece of contemporary realist Jamie Wyeth, Victoria is an active part of a remarkable artistic dynasty. The daughter of Nicholas and Jane Wyeth. Her father, Nicholas, is a private art dealer, while her mother, Jane, is an art advisor with a background in art history." To put it simply and rather bluntly, it reads like a PR puff piece.
I would personally nuke this and completely rewrite it, focusing on what reliable, secondary sources are saying about this person. If you cannot find reliable, secondary sources, then you do not have a page. See WP:BACKWARDS for more on that. CommissarDoggoTalk? 16:43, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I’d also steer clear from editing the page due to your possible conflict of interest. Equine-man (talk) 16:48, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Equine-man Editors with a conflict of interest are not prohibited from creating articles, provided they use the WP:AfC process, which Paul is doing. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:55, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, but they should also declare such COI beforehand. Equine-man (talk) 16:57, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Paul7384 Apart from the tone of the draft, you are not complying with this policy for biographies of living people, which you need to read carefully. You also need to show that she is wikinotable in the way that's defined here. Interviews are not an acceptable way to do that, since inevitably people talk about themselves in a favourable way. You need sources which meet all of these criteria. As a newcomer to editing, you might be better to build your skills by editing existing articles on topics that interest you. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:53, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I deleted a lot of the laudatory content, but in my opinion she has not accomplished anything that makes Draft:Victoria Wyeth Wikipedia-notable. David notMD (talk) 18:34, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Paul7384 At risk of a "pile-on", I would add that being "an active part of the Wyeth legacy" is really not sufficient to justify an article about a person. All I see is that Victoria is active in giving lectures about her illustrious ancestors and relatives, but that she, herself, has not garnered much attention otherwise. In essence: Notability is not inherited.
A good source that shows her ancestry and her activity (like this one), could possibly be used in a single sentence on the articles about those ancestors to show her family ties and their artistic legacy that she promotes today. But it would need to be short, very carefully worded, and not forced into an article for its own sake.
I was slightly bemused by one other statement you made, namely, "I do not know Victoria but I do have her permission to proceed with this endeavor." Firstly, if you've made some contact with her, it suggests you do in some way know her but, more importantly, we do not ever need the approval of any notable subject to create a Wikipedia article about them. We only use sources that are in the public domain to compile articles, so permission is never needed.
I'm sorry this does not sound too positive. Until she becomes notable in her own right (see WP:NBIO or WP:NARTIST), I fear you might be struggling to make progress. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 19:48, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I didn’t understand the rules sufficiently to make a good submission. I have listened to one zoom presentation by Victoria and I watched a presentation of hers at an organized event. I haven’t spoken with her directly. I sent her some communications about Wikipedia. I was very impressed by her work, that’s it really. I can see that opening the page is going to be difficult. Thank you for considering my submission. Paul7384 (talk) 23:33, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is such a thing as infobox weapon, you can see that on page such as T-14 Armata and SA80. The reason why I use these two random examples is that the page for the T-14 has parameters for being a vehicle and being a weapon, so it includes stuff about its mobility but also about its firepower. The SA80 however focused on its characteristics as a firearm.
The main differences between all the weird and wonderful infobox types is that they all focus on different areas, with some of them looking quite different depending on what they focus on. See Jacksepticeye and Khorgo as, again, two completely different examples.
In basic terms, they have parameters that are the same in some cases, and in others are wildly different. CommissarDoggoTalk? 16:46, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Saving a sandbox environment.

Hi all. I'm working on big changes to a company page. My mentor helped me create a sandbox environment to create a draft for these changes. I have now asked for an independent editor review of the page but am concerned my changes in the sandbox aren't saving. There is no 'save changes' button, only 'review changes' and 'publish changes'. If I hit publish, will the changes only be reflected in the sandbox environment, or will they update the actual company page in Wikipedia? JessZoiti (talk) 05:31, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@JessZoiti: For legal reasons, the "Save" button was renamed to "Publish", so that you are aware anyone can view your changes. It will just be in your sandbox, not the article RudolfRed (talk) 05:42, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@RudolfRed thank you. I've hit publish in my Sandbox environment. Hopefully this means the independent review editor will be able to see the updates and changes – i requested they synch with my sandbox in order to review the changes. JessZoiti (talk) 05:47, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see that you've replaced the description "Singaporean liquefied natural gas exchange", which explains what the business is, by "Provider of enterprise solutions to the global commodities market", which is meaningless promotional guff. In my view that is not an improvement. Maproom (talk) 07:55, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And worse - before your edits, it cited six sources. Now it cites none (though it does list some). Wikipedia articles should be be bases on the sources that they cite - so that's definitely not an improvement. Maproom (talk) 08:02, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JessZoiti, please see Help:Referencing for beginners in order to improve the article. '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talk|contribs) 08:05, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for divulging that you are being paid to edit. Very likely each client hopes that its article will impress readers with its experience, skills, probity, etc. But Wikipedia is only concerned with what reliable, disinterested sources say about a demonstrably notable subject. These "big changes" you're working on -- are they perhaps intended to aggrandize the subject? As it is, your draft reads like corporate PR sludge. As a humdrum example: "GLX Digital pivoted away from The Global LNG Marketplace in July 2021, discontinuing the product", which doesn't obviously mean anything other than "GLX Digital discontinued the Global LNG Marketplace in July 2021". -- Hoary (talk) 08:26, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The existing GLX Digital has properly formated refs embedded in the text. Copy those as needed into your Sandbox. For new refs, use proper ref format and placement. P.S. No hyperlinks in text. David notMD (talk) 12:54, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You face a large problem: As a declared PAID editor, you are not supposed to edit the article directly. Instead, you are supposed to propose changes on the article's Talk page so that a non-involved editor can approve and implement, or deny. David notMD (talk) 12:59, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New topic

I just want to add that that Jonathan Hager "played a crucial role," by emphasizing his significant influence and active involvement in political processes. This, I hope, will underscore his importance in the local history of Maryland and portrays him as a key figure in the region's development. Whytehallda (talk) 06:41, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Whytehallda, thank you for trying, but in the article Jonathan Hager, you've presented as the source for this added tidbit a page that seems to have been "user-generated", and you've put the link to it in the body of the article. Neither is acceptable in a Wikipedia article. Please see Help:Introduction to referencing with Wiki Markup/1, -- Hoary (talk) 08:16, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New article submission, but before I start…

Dear Wiki Help, I’ve tried and failed to enter a new article because of the notability and my tone being too biographical. I didn’t know about these rules when I started. I’d like to try again but with a different subject. My niece is an actress Flora Dawson, she comes up first if you google her. If I write a short submission and cite her achievements do you think she is noteworthy enough to be published as an article on Wikipedia? Paul7384 (talk) 09:52, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Paul7384 Hello and welcome. Please read conflict of interest first. You will want to see the definition of a notable actress to see if she meets it, and gather independent reliable sources that give her significant coverage- those should be summarized in an article, it should not merely document her achievements. 331dot (talk) 09:57, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Paul7384 Most of the content I see on Google is based on her IMDb entry. Wikipedia does not consider that a reliable source (see WP:IMDB). So your approach could be to take the IMDb listings only as a starting point to delve into her career and see whether theatre critics etc. have written specifically about her. Choose only high-quality newspaper journalists and avoid anything substantially based on interviews. You must use the WP:AfC process because of your conflict of interest and should declare that on the Draft's Talk Page. Good luck. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:08, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Mike, very helpful. Paul7384 (talk) 12:11, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Photo of corpses

Hi all. Wondering about the photo of corpses in the Dalton Gang infobox. It's the only image on the topic available on wiki commons, which isn't surprising. My reading of the guidance is that it should probably be removed, but I'm curious about what editors with some experience with WP:OM have to say. Cheers. Robincantin (talk) 10:21, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Robincantin I see that you asked this back in January on the Talk Page of the article and I'm surprised you haven't had any replies there given the page had 77 watchers. My own view is that this image (from 1892) is by no means the most graphic we have on Wikipedia and would not fall into the most egregious categories where specific consensus to use them would be needed. I note that the image is widely used in multiple-language Wikipedias, so I don't think that the English version is an outlier in this case. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:59, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mike Turnbull, Theroadislong Given the topic, I suspect the en.wikipedia was the original, the other languages just followed its example. Hello Wikipedians,

The Wikimedia Foundation has received an e-mail confirming that the copyright holder has approved publication under the terms mentioned on this page. This correspondence has been reviewed by a Volunteer Response Team (VRT) member and stored in our permission archive. The correspondence is available to trusted volunteers as ticket #2015102610015282.

Basically, if I'd like to upload an image in the same way as the example I provided – how do I do that? :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Benevolent Bureocrat (talkcontribs) 10:42, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Benevolent Bureocrat Commons has its own Help Desk where you can ask if you run into problems. The email address to send permission is permissions-commons@wikimedia.org See c:Commons:Email_templates for alternative ways you can get people to use the system. For your own pictures taken on your own camera, the process is much simpler. Just use the Commons:Special:UploadWizard and carefully follow the prompts. Hi Benevolent Bureocrat. Just going to add that if you upload your own photos to Commons, you need to make sure they are not photos of entirely of or that include too much of someone else's creative content because in many cases you will need that person's consent as well. For more on this, see WP:Derivative works, c:Commons:Licensing, c:Commons:Own work, c:Commons:2D copying, c:Commons:Derivative works, c:Commons:Freedom of panorama, c:Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter and c:Commons:De minimis. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:09, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do we qualify a "reasonable" paid source?

There's been a handful of changes recently using The Athletic's paid fantasy football guide (ex. Ricky Pearsall) to cite full names, birth dates, and birth places. Is this allowed? I know we can cite paid publications, but these guides feel kind of commercial and are likely not accessible in the long term (and therefore, unarchivable). Any suggestions on what to do here? --Engineerchange (talk) 12:59, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In line with the current sourcing policies, I don't see why this wouldn't be allowed. Editors can cite rare books that very few editors will ever be able to read in order to verify the claims made, so as long as the author is reliable, The Athletic's guide would be a usable resource. In terms of "unarchivable": is there precedent of previous years' draft guides being deleted? That would be my main concern here. Reconrabbit 14:55, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think the nature of fantasy football journalism (vs. sports journalism) is it is and can be transient and inconsistent, so I would imagine the url of these things can and do change as years go by, but such is the nature of the Internet. Appreciate your input; I think I'll let this go; my concern was if this file is used to cite the birth dates for dozens of articles and is gone in a year, we are stuck back at square one in a couple years time! --Engineerchange (talk) 15:27, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is a concern for sure, but even now there are plenty of printed books that can be bought for the past few decades of NFL drafts still out there, and The Athletic still hosts news articles regarding fantasy football from 2018 that pop up on Google. Reconrabbit 15:39, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

MOS:ELLIPSES and MOS:LQ seem contradictory.

The following guidance seems contradictory.

MOS:ELLIPSES:

But where an ellipsis is immediately followed by any of . ? ! : ; , ) ] } or by a closing quotation mark (single or double), use a non-breaking space before the ellipsis, and no space after it: Jones wrote: "These stories amaze me. The facts suffer so frightfully ..."

MOS:LQ:

If the quotation is a single word or a sentence fragment, place the terminal punctuation outside the closing quotation mark. When quoting a full sentence, the end of which coincides with the end of the sentence containing it, place terminal punctuation inside the closing quotation mark.

  • Miller wanted, he said, "to create something timeless".
  • Miller said: "I wanted to create something timeless."

My guess is that MOS:ELLIPSES is not as clear as it could be. For example, perhaps it should be edited like this (or similar):

But where an ellipsis is immediately followed by any of . ? ! : ; , ) ] } or by a closing quotation mark (single or double), use a non-breaking space before the ellipsis, and no space after it: Jones wrote: "These stories amaze me. The facts suffer so frightfully ...".(Note that the period ending the sentence should be placed outside the quotation mark; see MOS:LQ.)

Or am I totally misunderstanding?

Thanks! – Mark D Worthen PsyD (talk) [he/him] 14:06, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Markworthen My interpretation is that an ellipsis is the set of (usually) three dots that indicates something is missing: in this case from a quote. That being so, it would be confusing to place another punctuation dot immediately after the ellipsis but it does need a non-breaking space before it. Another way to think of this is that any quotation ending in an ellipsis must indeed be a fragment, so the advice at MOS:LQ is good: put the quotation mark before the final punctuation. Your suggestion to alter the guidance could lead to extra clarity, so if no-one else here at the Teahouse has a different idea, you could be bold and add that.
