Bangladesh Agricultural University (Bengali: বাংলাদেশ কৃষি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, romanized: Bangladesh Krishi Bishshobiddalôe, abbreviated as BAU), was established in 1961.[1] It is the first agricultural university and the second-largest public university in Bangladesh.[2] The university is located in Mymensingh and comprises 44 departments.[2]

History

The educational program of the university started in 1961[3] with two faculties namely Veterinary and Agricultural Faculty, then it was called East Pakistan Agricultural University.[4] During the war of independence, the name of the university was announced as "Swadhin Bangladesh Agricultural University".[5] Within a few months of its establishment, a third faculty called the Faculty of Animal Husbandry started its journey. The Faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology was added in the academic year 1963–64, the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology in the academic year 1964-65 and the Faculty of Fisheries in the academic year 1967–68.[6]

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 13 February 1973, in a reception organized by the Bangladesh Agricultural University Central Students' Union (BAKSU) at the university convocation stage, announced the first class rank in the field of employment for agriculturists like doctors and engineers.[4]

BAU Agricultural Museum was established in 2007 and it was the country's first agricultural museum.[7]

Campus

Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) is the second largest public university in Bangladesh. Its expansive campus, covering an area of 5.10 square kilometers (1.97 sq mi), is situated in rural-urban mixed surroundings within Mymensingh Sadar Upazila, approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) south of the metropolitan city Mymensingh.[8][9]

The campus comprises academic, administrative, and residential buildings, farms, gardens, and related facilities.

Two national research institutes, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA)[10] and Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI)[11] are housed in this campus.

Administration

The university is governed by the statutes put in place by the East Pakistan Agricultural University Ordinance, 1961, and subsequently amended by the governments of East Pakistan and Bangladesh. The President of Bangladesh or their designate is the chancellor of the university, and appoints the vice chancellor.[3] The vice-chancellor is the chief executive officer of the university.[6] In September 2024, A K Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan became the vice-chancellor.[12]

The University Grants Commission funds more than 90% of the university's recurring budget and all of its capital projects.[13]

The university has 45 departments organized into six faculties: agriculture, agricultural economics and rural sociology, agricultural engineering and technology, animal husbandry, fisheries, and veterinary science.[2]

Faculty of Agriculture

Faculty of Fisheries

The Faculty of Fisheries, started in 1967, is the newest faculty of the university. It consists of five departments:[39]

Faculty of Veterinary Science

The Faculty of Veterinary Science is one of the two original faculties of the university.[6] It consists of eight departments:[40]

Reputation and rankings

The 2024 U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Ranking placed BAU 5th among 5 in Bangladesh and tied for 1775th in the world.[41][42] The July 2024 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities placed BAU 9th out of 170 in Bangladesh and 2323rd in the world.[43] BAU was ranked 1001–1200 globally in the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.[44][45]

Undergraduate programme

Undergraduate admissions in BAU are competitive.[46]

As of 2023–2024 session, the general distribution of seats for admission into Level 1, Semester 1 of the undergraduate courses as offered by seven faculties BAU will be as follows:

  • Faculty of Veterinary Science: 180
  • Faculty of Agriculture (Agriculture- 320 + Food Safety Management- 30): 350
  • Faculty of Animal Husbandry: 180
  • Faculty of Agricultural Economics & Rural Sociology: 106
  • Faculty of Agricultural Engineering & Technology (BSc Agri. Engg. 100 + BSc Food Engg. 50 = BSc. in Bio info. = 30): 180
  • Faculty of Fisheries: 133

This is including all Freedom fighters quota and other quotas.

Total enrollment per year = 1116.

Bangladeshi all Agriculture University association has decided that undergraduate admission test will be combined from academic session 2019–2020. After admission test merit list, students will admit according to the merit score of nine Agriculture University. All seven Agriculture University has available seats 3718 including Bangladesh Agriculture University.[47]

Every students must have minimum HSC and SSC requirements to appeared on the Agricultural Admission Exam.[48]

Publications

The Journal of the Bangladesh Agricultural University is published on behalf of the Bangladesh Agricultural University Research System. It is a peer-reviewed, open access journal, published quarterly. It accepts original research articles and review articles on all fields of agricultural science.[49] The first volume was published in 2003.[50]
