The Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union (informally "Brexit Secretary" or "Brexit Minister"),[1] is the secretary of state responsible for the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union ("Brexit"), who will oversee negotiations following a nationwide referendum on 23 June 2016, in which the majority of British voters voted to leave the EU.[2] The office-holder will be a member of the Cabinet.

The position was created at the outset of the premiership of Theresa May, who became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 13 July 2016.[3] May reportedly ordered civil servants to find a building to house a new Department for Exiting the European Union, to be headed by the Secretary of State.

The inaugural holder is David Davis MP,[3] a longtime Eurosceptic who campaigned for the UK to leave the EU[4] and a former chairman of the Conservative Party who served in the Shadow Cabinet of David Cameron as Shadow Home Secretary.[5] Davis had previously served in the government of John Major as Minister of State for Europe.
