Position

Durant isn't just a forward he is listed as a guard/forward on almost every site. You have to be kidding me Durant plays more guard than power forward.

GA comments

I know that Durant is a young guy, but for a person who was the #2 pick, there surely must be a lot more info out there on the guy. In Australia, Andrew Bogut was the #1 pick and it was on the news all the time even though nobody in Australia cares much about basketball.

  • #2 draft. I guess it must have been the subject of a lot of talk. What did his team say? Why did they pick him, what skills does he bring to the teams which make him so higly rated?
  • We have no information on his style of play, except for his playing position. Needs major revamp to discuss and analyse expert opiinions of him. What about his temperament and so forth?
  • How did he transfer from high school to uni? Did he get a scholarship at UoT. What were their motives in selecting him? What did they say about him. What course did he enrol in at university?
  • How did his team go? Match-winning performances?
  • Style and so forth is ok. Since it was relatively short, I did copyediting and so forth.
  • SOme of the refs are not fully filled in. some only have a url. Also with YouTube, it is not considered to be a RS but I cannot open the video to see what is in it. What does it tell us?
  • Video game pic should be removed. We know that his face was used for a videogame cover. The image does not tell us much more than that and it if unnecessary FU.

Someone work on this please I have a decent summary of his international career to this point, but I don't really know how to work on all the editing stuff in wiki, so I'm just going to post it here with some sources poorly cited and hope someone edits it to be up to standards. I'm paraphrasing two parts of the actual article, so the number I list in () is the source number listed at the bottom. I feel like I might be a little too detailed for this since I'm going to discuss each individual game, but if anyone feels it's not necessary to briefly discuss each game, just go ahead and change it.

Although Kevin Durant was invited to try out for Team USA in 2008, he was cut from the team due to the incredible talent available and his lack of experience (29). Thus, Kevin Durant's international career first began with the 2010 FIBA world championship, where Durant won tournament MVP and lead Team USA to the gold (http://turkey2010.fiba.com/pages/eng/fe/10/fwcm/news/p/eid/4728/nid/44609/sid/4728/article.html). Even though Team USA won the Olympic Gold in 2008 with the "Redeem Team" (the team Durant didn't make), none of the players returned to the squad for the FIBA World Championship, and a new Team USA was formed to compete in the 2010 FIBA World Championship (http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/olybb/news/story?id=5372600). This new team, dubbed the "B-Team", composed mostly of inexperienced and undersized players (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=sheridan_chris&page=TeamUSA-WCPreview), was led by Kevin Durant, who Team USA head coach, Mike Krzyzewski, labeled as the best player on the team (http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/olybb/news/story?id=5461937). During exhibition play, Team USA defeated France, Spain, and then Greece with Durant earning 14 points and 8 rebounds against France, 25 points against Spain in a narrow 1-point win, and 15 points and 7 boards in a 28 point victory against Greece (http://espn.go.com/extra/fiba/recap/_/id/300827930/united-states-vs-greece, I'm having trouble finding the box scores to the other games). This undefeated streak for the exhibition games would continue throughout the rest the entire FIBA World Championship. During the preliminary rounds, USA was placed in group B with Slovenia, Brazil, Crotia, Iran and Tunisia. Kevin Durant played sparingly in 4 of these 5 games averaging only about 20 minutes per game. The exception was USA vs Brazil where USA edged out a win by 2 points, and Durant played for 39 minutes (out of 40 minutes for FIBA basketball) while racking up 27 points and 10 rebounds. No, I'm going to list his height as it's measured at the NBA's official pre-draft camp: 6'10 in shoes

Not all NBA players are listed at their height in shoes for example Vince Carter measured 6'5 1/2 barefoot and that was rounded up to his NBA listing, Shaq is 7'1 barefoot aswell, Richard Jefferson measured 6'7 1/4 barefoot and is listed at 6'7 and Shane Battier was measured at 6'8 1/4 barefoot and is listed at 6'8 RandyRhoadsRonnieDio

  • I would ask the following question; As an encyclopedic source, should wikipedia report a listed height without qualifying whether it is in shoes?

As an example;the WWE regularly lists heights which are often inflated, should an encyclopedia report the listed height or an actual height. I made a change to 6'9" with the addendum that KD is typically listed at 6'10." This apparently was not good enough. I noted when I made the change that the NBA asks the players what height to list, it is not automatically the shoes height. There are a few very notable inflations (let alone shoes vs. barefoot) heights in the NBA. Charles Barkley was routinely listed at 6'6" though he was 6'4." Allen Iverson gets 6' even though most players who have commented think he's more like 5'10." I just think it is silly to list someone's height in shoes in an encylopedia. The NBA is a product, a business, and can do what it likes as far as reporting heights. When it comes down to it, Kevin Durant is 6'9," if he wants to play in platform shoes he can be 7'0," so do we then change his height to 7'? No. Or if he decides to go old school and wear some converse all stars, is he then 6'9.5" instead. Why bother with all these variables?

  • You're not going to get height measurements without shoes post the draft-camps, so after that it is the listed height. The draft-camp measured height is accurate, but what's to prove that Durant hasnt grown and inch or two past the date of the measurement? In regards to this, I think we should go with the height listed on an athlete's official profile page @ NBA.com (Durant's not yet up, as he's not drafted) Corpx 07:05, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Monica Wright of the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx is engaged to Kevin, or so I read today in Bing's Sports news app. That is a surprise, and made me look up the Wikipedia page on Kevin Durant. On the Google search result side bar, the movie he is credited with being in is a Nike commercial. What is with that?

OK, I have had a first look and I have some very major concerns (I am using another WikiProject NBA GA LeBron James as a role model for what the article should look like). First thing is the headings for the sections in his career do not comply with WP:WTW nor are professional. Break it up into Level 3 headings by team (since OKC were the Supersonics when Durant was drafted) and use Level 4 headers for the seasons. For the first sentence of the third paragraph in Life outside basketball is better suited in the Public image or the Player Profile section. Also, cite his awards and statistics with his profile from Basketball-Reference. Fix those issues and then some expansion in the seasons section can have us heading in the right direction. The first sentence in LOB is about his agent, which is paired with information about his endorsements - the same way it is in the LeBron article. Both the awards and statistics section have citations to Basketball Reference already. Well, the 2008-09 season only has one section talking about him. There are some season statistics, but not much more. Perhaps add some notable moments. Also, I was talking about the first sentence of the third paragraph in the LOB section, not the first. The agents bit belongs where it is. And then we also need more about his current residence and family in the LOB section. Then we'll expand the lead accordingly, and then we're looking at a GA. The infobox has listed height and weight for a reason – there are many varying sources with different interpretations, not everything can be accurate as heights/weights change often. With listed height/weight, there can be defining figures. Wikipedia uses NBA.com as they are the "official" source – it's been that way for a while now and it be wise to stick with that. Listed height is up to the teams, who might vary on whether they use height with or without shoes. Per ESPN.com: "After the draft, teams got to (and get to) determine the height of their employees. This is what you see on the player card, and this is what largely informs the public idea of how tall a player is ... Despite all the hard work Jonathan Givony of Draft Express does in compiling draft height data, the almighty player card is the loudest guy at the bar." Birthdate/Birthplace

Someone changed the birthdate/birthplace to Sept. 29 1988, Washington DC (rather than Sept. 30 1988, Suitland MD). Majority of references I found seem to state the latter so I changed it back and added two references that looked most likely to be authentic (although TexasSports.Com has the former dates just to confuse things) - tried searching for official birth records but couldn't find anything. Kevin Durant was really born on September 29, 1988 in Washington, D.C. and not on September 30, 1988 in Suitland, Maryland. My information is according to TexasSports.com, the official athletic website of the Texas Longhorns. Zarius, who is a Wikipedia editor insists that Durant was born on September 30, 1988 in Suitland Maryland. Zarius is a pathetic dumbass that dosent know what he is talking about so don't believe anything that he writes. Please note that I have only changed the birthdate once - I reverted an unsourced change by 72.95.244.138 (06:19, 4 March 2007 - note the previous 5 edits on the same day). If you look at the infobox, it says "listed height" and "listed weight". It does not say "true height" or "true weight". NBA.com list Durant as 6'9" and 240 lb [3] so that's what we go with, simple as that. DaHuzyBru (talk) 05:12, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi DaHuzyBru. I agree that the intention to sign sentence is clunky in the second sentence, but I don't think you and other editors are really being reasonable here. We could easily include the information that Durant intends to sign in the lead section and not necessarily in the lead paragraph. Instead, we're currently blaring this notice in the lead section, which includes bold font, a blue bar, and a graphical icon:

In this context, I think it's pretty bizarre that the lead does not mention the intention to sign. Instead, we force readers to click "Golden State Warriors (2016–present)" under "Professional career" in the table of contents box. At this point, I think many readers are asking themselves why there's a "Golden State Warriors" heading under "Professional career", but the lead section makes no mention of this directly, instead using the space to loudly insinuate that something has happened using {{current sports transaction}}. I think we can and should better serve our readers here.

I agree completely, MZMcBride. It is indeed bizarre. Durant saying he's going to sign with the Warriors is huge news in the sports world, and it's odd to not reflect it in the lead. And that tag at the top is very misleading, as the"reported signing" is not at all based on anonymous sources - it's been reported in pretty much every top US news source, from ESPN to NY Times, as well as by Durant himself in The Players' Tribune. My opinion is that in the future this sort of news should be incorporated into the lead, phrased that the player announced his intention to sign with whatever team, and if by some crazy turn of events like with DeAndre Jordan last year, where he said he was going to the Mavs and then wound up re-signing with the Clips, so then we just change it back.--Bernie44 (talk) 15:09, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

OK. So the usual cycle is that when the article is unprotected, most non-autoconformed editors—unaware of any established editing conventions— edit the article as if the deal is official. The article may eventually be semi-protected, but a few registered users, again unaware of conventions and perhaps in spite of hidden text, may continue to edit the article as if it was a done deal. In rare cases like Durant, the article gets fully protected, and consensus needs to be established before an edit can be made. Given that Wikipedia is crowdsourced, I'm not sure how to effectively have an article reflect a player's intention to sign without requiring the overhead of discussions on a per-article basis. But if we did have solid guidelines in place, then while there would still be some edit warring, at least admins could enforce the guidelines knowing they are acting with the consensus. The first step would be to establish a project consensus. 2015-16

Hello,

The 2015-16 section of the article has some great information, but it is not concise, and I think it could use some trimming. There are two things I'd like to do:

1) Trim the section into a single paragraph that is more in line with the other sections of the article, and 2) Merge it with the 2014-15 section and call it something like "Final years in Oklahoma City"

The former section should also mention regarding these stats that they represent career highs for Durant in field goal percentage, rebounds per game and blocks per game, and a career low in turnovers per game. Changes to article

Hello,

There are a few changes that I think could benefit the article, but some might be considered a little controversial, so I wanted to propose them here and get some feedback before doing anything.

  • Change "Early life and education" to "Early life". I couldn't find any other Good/Featured Articles that used the former.
  • Remove the big info box with his high school recruiting information. I think it's big and chunky, and feels more relevant for players currently in high school versus those who have moved on to a professional career.
  • Add back a third paragraph to the introduction that gives a brief summary of Durant's off-the-court activity.
  • Remove two of the three images in the "Awards and honors" section.

I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts on those potential changes. I think that the article is getting a little busy, but I certainly don't want to change anything if people think I'm full of crap. Thanks all!--Ktmartell (talk) 00:11, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

This is wrong as they've accomplished this feat before on two occasions, both in the 2011-2012 NBA season. This same error is found in Russell Westbrook's page. As you can see, they both scored 40 or more points on both occasions. Granted, both games did go to overtime so I do think their October 30, 2015 game still deserves mention as they were the first pair of teammates to score 40 or more each during regulation but in it's current form, it's simply wrong.

The images are of different time frames and located in different subsections, but there's no reason why they can't be tweaked either. Alright, here is the damage:
  • I removed an image of him dribbling in 2014. As Bagumba mentioned, it looked crowded on a high-res screen.
  • I removed a lot of game summaries that I personally felt were not significant enough for inclusion. For example, "He registered his second triple-double as a Warrior" or "He scored 38 points in a loss". It can be tough with players like KD because every third game is notable for one reason or another.
  • I tried to add a little more context to the newer sections. For example, I added some notes such as "He was criticized for playing too much iso as the Warriors fell behind in the series." Just trying to avoid too many instances of "He did this... He did that."
  • I removed exact game scores. I noticed that they don't show up anywhere in the article, and then suddenly in 2017 they are prevalent, so I tried to make everything consistent.

Neutrality, re: 2016 free agency

Bagumba, regarding this, we should note why he was criticized. Per the sources in the article, and various sources easily found by Googling, the criticism centered on Durant going to an already established, championship team. We shouldn't be vague about why he was criticized. Readers who are not familiar with the matter will wonder why it was so controversial. As you know, we write Wikipedia articles for the general audience, not just for those familiar with the topics. It's also easy enough to locate sources comparing the decision to James's decision, but I'm not focused on that.

As seen, after this removal by a different editor, I made this edit. That the "criticism centered on Durant going to an already established, championship team" is accurate. Like Durant makes clear, including in a video, people felt he took the easy way out. But, yes, the summary I added could be improved, and also note that fans felt he betrayed them. And there are better sources that could be used to support the content. My summary was a quick fix meant to center on what the main focus of the criticism was/still is. Could be exaggerated but surely proves the growth spurt in the article false. I imagine there's lots more evidence from his time at Oak Hill (highlight videos etc) that he was clearly taller than the current version of this page suggests he was.

It’s official

It literally is being reported everywhere my credible sources. So there’s absolutely no way KD will not end up on the Suns after this trade is finalized. This Wikipedia page needs to be updated to KD playing for the suns because it is not accurate that he plays for the Brooklyn nets anymore he is a phoenix sun now.
