Untitled

The page was protected to prevent vandal from adding the image hello.jpg to the article. Hello.jpg was used on the website Goat.cx, showing a man doing something very nasty and un-natural. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 00:36, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

Of course it's an ad for the college. The administration of the college is a bunch of money hungry #*$#'s who even when given one of the largest donations of any engineering school in the country, manage to go into debt. Where did the money go people? It clearly didn't go into fixing the building. 80 degree rooms with non-working thermostat....real energy efficient.

The listing of Gertrude Elion as an alumna mentions only her honorary degree - which is really not enough to make someone an alum - and overlooks the fact that she spent a few years as a part-time Ph.D. candidate. (Her bachelor's and master's degrees came from Hunter College and NYU, respectively.) She never completed her doctorate because the Polytechnic insisted she become a full-timer, which she could not afford to do. I have no ties to Poly, but I think it can reasonably claim her as an alum. The article should say she was a Poly student instead of just listing the honorary degree.

The info box says Poly has 470 faculty, but the article explains that this figure includes both full-timers and adjuncts. The info boxes for other colleges and universities generally quote a figure for full-timers only. Counting both creates the illusion that Poly has an exceptionally low student:faculty ratio. I suggest listing the numbers of full-tmers and of adjuncts separately. I would do this myself but I don't know what the numbers are.

Merger with NYU

It appears likely that Polytechnic University is merging with New York University, according to a recent e-mail from NYU President John Sexton.

Move?

The current title, "Polytechnic University of New York" might lead one to believe that "of New York" is part of the university's name. Should we move to Polytechnic University (New York)? --Nricardo 02:52, 8 August 2007 (UTC) New York is not part of the name. Merge?? Move?? Etc??

At this time (Fall 2009), Polytechnic is officially ONLY AN AFFILIATE of New York University, and uses that official designation on it's webpages. It is an interim entity, and is in a process of trying to align itself to become a school of NYU, although all the public relations and branding effort is directed toward creating the impression that is fait accompli. PolyOldGuard, you've attempted several times to edit the article with your, it's ONLY AN AFFILIATE edit, only to have it later undone by other editors. I don't think these other editors (at least I don't) disagree with you that NYU-Poly is, at this 'stage', only an affiliate. For example, while everyone has undone your "AFFILIATE" edit from the MAIN PARAGRAPH, the HISTORY and NYU AFFILIATION sections (which address the affiliation) has not been undone (indeed, they have even been expanded). I think it's because the affiliation has already been well covered throughout the article and no one has made attempts to hide this fact (at least in the current article). Since Polytechnic is know officially part of New York University, i think the article should be edited and rendered and somehow linked etc with New York University pages on wiki.

Nricardo, I think there is a misunderstanding, we are not talking about merging the articles (at least I don't think we are). The NYU:Poly wiki page has since been linked with the NYU pages on wiki. ACS certified chemistry program

I am a current chemistry student, and the line about the undergraduate chemistry program being certified by the ACS is dubious. Students have the option to pursue an ACS certified degree (many institutions have this option), but not all chemistry degrees are ACS certified. Extra, upper-level undergraduate chemistry classes are necessary for this designation. I am the only member of the senior class eligible for this degree, and 1 of 2 in the last 6(ish) years. The PR department needs to do a little research before they gloat their fallacies. It would be best if you could add some sort of reference to support these claims, but just try to add the information in a clear and NPOV-consistent sort of way and see what happens. Consistent with some of the comments above, I have marked this article as sounding like an advertisement. Examples abound in almost every section - beginning in the first paragraph with the somewhat un-supportable claim that NYU-Poly "is the New York metropolitan area’s preeminent resource in science, engineering and technology education and research." This is clearly marketing jargon and the article should be edited to remove as much of it as possible. I hope this will inspire people to pitch in and start making changes wherever they see fit! Based on the traffic observed in the article's history and the rate at which useless, advertisement sounding information has compounded since I first saw this article in 2005, it is clear that it is now somebody's job to develop an internet presence for this university. Obviously, Wikipedia is not the appropriate forum for such a thing, and as my alma mater, I am sickened to see that such a high-quality school has to resort to the skill set of a used car salesman. Could someone lock this article, thereby preventing this PR person from making this any worse? Other reputable institutions do not have articles that read in such a way, and the notion of using Wikipedia to advertise is fundamentally offensive. The images that have nothing to do with the university (the stealth bomber, etc.) should also be taken down.

Hello,
I agree that the article was disgustingly promotional but I completely disagree with other reputable institutions do not have articles that read in such a way. Check the Wiki pages of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Harvey Mudd College(check it's Relations with Caltech section). I am an engineering graduate of NYU-Poly and I know that there have been vandalism in NYU-POly page before. Someone tried to promote Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and demote NYU-POly in NYU-Poly' Wiki page. This may 've prompted Poly people( or people from rival colleges) to mess up NYU-Poly Wiki page.

A lot of the puff is back, for example, words like "distinguished", etc. This is a battle that won't be won unless the article is locked from changes completely - mangoeater has posted small, ad-like changes in the past on this page.

To suggest that I am not a real alumnus and that I'm part of some inter-college conspiracy theory to badmouth Poly is both unfounded and inflammatory. I attended Poly just as the NYU acquisition was occurring, and I now live out-of-state. For employers that haven't heard of Poly, they may refer to the Wikipedia page for basic information. I think the "fruiteater" accounts should be totally banned from Wiki.... If I were considering a Poly graduate for a position, I wouldn't throw his resume in the garbage after reading Poly's Wiki page, a page that is open to the public for editing. I would go to the school's official website to learn about it..... This is called POLYTHINKING!

Promotion of MIT and CalTech should not also be allowed in Poly's talk page.... Poly is definitely of the caliber of MIT and CalTech. The deputy chair of engineering at CalTech is a Poly alumnus! I don't know anyting about the inter-college conspiracy, but I do know that NYU-Poly has more than double(1807) the number of engineering graduate students of RPI, which has 818 engineering graduate students and both schools have exactly the same average GRE score... This is a fact that can be seen on the USNEWS ranking website.

Rattling off harrowingly specific statistics about Poly vs. competitor further proves how endemic this "use Wikipedia to advertise" mindset is in the culture of the Poly PR department. Wikipedia is supposed to be written in a neutral way, unlike a website that a school maintains themselves. Hi, I edited the NYU-Poly page yesterday and I see that you reverted it back. I read the talk page and I see people complaining about advertisement like language. I put the word "distinguished" because it existed in the page for many years before someone messed up the page. Besides Poly does have distinguished history in polymer chemistry(In 1946, Herman Mark established the Polymer Research Institute at Brooklyn Polytechnic, the first research facility in the United States dedicated to polymer research. Mark is also recognized as a pioneer in establishing curriculum and pedagogy for the field of polymer science.[6] In 1950, the POLY division of the American Chemical Society was formed, and has since grown to the second-largest division in this association with nearly 8,000 members. The American Chemical Society designated the Polymer Research Institute as a National Historic Chemical Landmark on September 3, 2003). In electrical engineering, Rober G. Brown (class of 1868) designed and developed the first telephone system in Paris, France. Among his other innovations were the "French Telephone," with its separate hand piece (carrying the speaker and microphone) which rested in a cradle, and the hiring of women to work as telephone operators. I don't understand. What does any of this have to do with being impartial on Wikipedia? You rattle off facts from three different accounts/IP addresses, yet you fail to address why you think this is the appropriate forum for this. Don't all universities have self-hosted websites? Are they not self-aggrandizing enough? Isn't any graduate of any university deemed notable in his field "distinguished"?

You wouldn't understand so instead of wasting time in Wiki, do something constructive. Of Poly's 44000 alumni, you are the only one posting on Wiki day and night. Unless you are getting paid by a rival university, you have nothing to gain from it. I know for sure that you are not getting paid by Poly. Everyone can look up Poly's professors and the classes they teach. Wiki has administrators and they will decide what to do. This began as a request for a NPOV article, and now you're resorting to ad hominem attacks about my work ethic. This started because I AGREE THAT POLY IS OF THE CALIBER OF MIT AND CALTECH, AND THEREFORE SHOULD NOT BE HARD-SOLD. You don't know where the marketing ends and the truthfulness begins. In terms of my "day and night Wiki use", I am currently a graduate student in Connecticut, and I'm incredibly thankful that my stipend has not been enough to donate money to Poly. I had a Dean's scholarship from 2006-2010 (that's $72,000, in case it's changed), and felt a strong need to give back, once I finished my Ph.D. Now that I see how Poly spends it's money and conducts itself, I will not be giving back a red cent. When I'm done with graduate school, it is very likely that employers outside of the Tri-State haven't heard of Poly, and so I, LIKE ALL POLY ALUMNS, HAVE A VESTED INTEREST IN THIS PAGE. polydoes have distinguished history in polymerscience(polymerscience in the USA started at NYU-Poly!)...Wiki and self-hosted websites are not reliable, only Wiki's reliable references matter......make some noise, read some pages(such as rpi and stevens), do some editing and after the page is exactly the way you want, give back money money money!

New article name doesn't make sense

The name "New York University Polytechnic Institute" is not a good one. What was wrong with "Polytechnic Institute of New York University"? That's still what the school is called in the first sentence. I just don't understand the move. --Mblumber (talk) 01:30, 29 August 2012 (UTC) .

The name was recently changed following further progress in the integration of Poly and NYU. This is from the text of an email sent out recently by NYU Board of Trustees Chairman Martin Lipton.
"Given this progress and interaction, the time has come to set into motion the final steps of the transformation of NYU-Poly into NYU’s Polytechnic School of Engineering. We intend to move forward promptly to seek the approvals and endorsements that are required to achieve this transition, including consulting with the Faculty Senators Council and the Senate Academic Affairs Committee at NYU, the Faculty Executive Committee at Poly, and other members of the universities’ communities; conducting due diligence; and seeking applicable regulatory approvals. This process is expected to be completed sometime before the start of the 2014-15 academic year."

Just so I do not have problems with edit warring, I am coming to the talk page. A sockpuppet of Mangoeater1000 has been adding unsourced alumni content and a large WP:COPYVIO from here. He is also removing weasel word and peacock tags, even thought those issues still are there. It would be helpful for other editors to watch this page. Full protection of the article would be unfortunate because it needs so much clean up, and that is not easily done via edit requests on the talk page. And yes, full-protection seems like a good idea because then people will be able to edit after edit request granted and this will end vandalism. They are making similar nonconstructive edits to Polytechnic Institute of New York University and other technical colleges-related articles. They all seem to be affiliated with California Polytechnic State University. Most probably all these three accounts belong to one person.

Yes, it is a shame that we are forced to remove all of the information you have added even though some of it may be true and useful. But we know that we can't trust you and your edits so we'll have to check everything ourselves. I know for a fact that there is a problem with some of your edits because you've tried to add things to the infobox that simply don't exist in the template.
You're going to be blocked in a bit once a checkuser looks into things and we'll then revert all of your edits. It would be swell if you could just save us all some time and stop editing the article. Thanks! ElKevbo (talk) 22:50, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

It's not a question of right or wrong. The law school article uses a different infobox for which that is a valid parameter; for the infobox in this article, it is not a valid parameter. If you'd like to lobby that the university infobox be changed to include the parameter then please be my guest but until it's changed the parameter doesn't exist. Either this should be split from the main university page, or the small number of additional people merged into the relevant sections. In either case, it needs editing. The table format is inappropriate as excessive mechanics, and so is the paragraph format--which is unreadable for this sort of content) ; we do this sort of material as lists. . I think there are enough for a separate article, and unless there are objections, I'm going to go that way. What is needed also is removal of a few who are not obviously notable, and shortening any description of more than a few words, and providing one or two word descriptions for the ones without it. I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Polytechnic Institute of New York University's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Minor fix requested

The "New York University affiliation" section makes no sense as it is presently written. They re-merged in 1973, and then merged in 2008 after 35 years of separation?! It makes it sound like they merged for ten minutes in 1973 and then immediately separated. Now that NYU Poly is a school of NYU, editors have been removing info about athletics. However, the NYU Poly athletics web site is still active and has games scheduled after the 1/1/2014 change. Sort of, yes. Almost all the signs still say NYU Poly SoE though (there's a couple, like the plaque about the Polymer Research Institute in the Jacobs Academics Building that still say Polytechnic University, and a few minor signs that still say Polytechnic Institute of NYU) but no sign on campus says Tandon yet. In addition there's been more talk about it, because there's been a huge uproar over the complete removal of the name Poly. I'm pretty sure, changing your name on your website doesn't legally constitute a name change. I'm not clear on the details after the 2014 merger, but I was of the understanding the school of engineering was some sort of legal entity (like a subsidiary of NYU kind of thing). The press release says the school is *going* to be renamed, and the name change will occur on Monday according to WSJ.UniversityofPi (talk) 23:09, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

Polytechnic

It appears to me that the name of the school is indeed "NYU Tandon School of Engineering" (see http://engineering.nyu.edu/about). The quick facts sheet also refers to it as this (http://engineering.nyu.edu/files/Quick_Facts_December%202015.pdf). Since the name change on October 5, 2015, ([http://engineering.nyu.edu/press-release/2015/10/05/100-million-gift-nyu-school-engineering-chandrika-ranjan-tandon press release here) all press releases refer to it without "poly".

It is unclear to me why the logo has the phrase "polytechnic institute" below it, but that could be a motto or slogan (compare to uakron.edu's logo). The mission statements are a bit out of date and do not reflect the name change from what I can tell. However, I think given the about page and the quick facts, it's a good bet that they do not refer to themselves as "polytechnic institute" anymore (per WP:SPS and WP:ABOUTSELF). Kathleen Hamilton[1], a Director of PR at the school confirmed the official name as NYU Tandon School of Engineering. The Polytechnic Institute Alumni Association has been vocal about not liking the name change, but the Wikipedia page should reflect the school's official name rather than what people may want it to be. Department of Mathematics

The Tandon Department of Mathematics no longer exists. All administrative and academic activities have been taken over by the Department of Mathematics in the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences[1], which is also the Department of Mathematics for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. It now oversees all activities in mathematics at Tandon, including the BS and MS degree programs and all math courses. All courses are now taught by Courant faculty.

As of September 1, 2017, the Tandon Department of Mathematics no longer exists, and the Courant Department of Mathematics has taken over all teaching of Tandon math courses[1].

 Already done Hans Reissner, designed the first successful all-metal aircraft, the Reissner Canard (or Ente) with both skin and structure made of metal. Also, first solved Einstein's equation for the metric of a charged point mass. His closed-form solution, rediscovered by several other physicists within the next few years, is now called the Reissner–Nordström metric.
